The growth of Haematococcus pluvialis in two alternative culture media NPK (10:10:10) and ME (macrophyte extract), under mixotrophic conditions using sugarcane molasses as a carbon source were evaluated for 28 days. The molasses was used in two different ways, in a native form (untreated) and a hydrolyzed (pretreated). Cell density of Haematococcus pluvialis in mixotrophic cultivation was higher in pretreated molasses. Growth rate was higher when pretreated molasses were employed in mixotrophic cultivation with NPK culture medium (k=0.5 7th growth day). Biomass, chlorophyll-a, conductivity and total inorganic nitrogen were not significantly different (p>0.05) during the experimental period for two mixotrophic cultivation and culture media. Protein contents of H. pluvialis biomass were higher in NPK culture medium with pretreated molasses (50% dry biomass). Annual biomass production was 520 kg-1 dry biomass with untreated molasses for two culture media, and 650 and 520 kg-1 dry biomass with pretreated molasses for NPK and ME culture media, respectively. The use of NPK and ME culture media in mixotrophic cultivation may be a new protocol for H. pluvialis cultivation due to the low cost and similar annual production.

O crescimento de Haematococcus pluvialis foi avaliado em dois meios de cultura alternativos NPK (10:10:10) e ME (extrato de macrófita), em condições mixotróficas utilizando melaço de cana-de-açúcar como fonte de carbono durante 28 dias. O melaço foi utilizado de duas maneiras diferentes, bruto (não tratado) e hidrolisado (pré-tratado). A densidade celular de Haematococcus pluvialis em cultivo mixotrófico foi maior em melaço pré-tratado. A taxa de crescimento foi maior no cultivo mixotrófico pré-tratado em meio de cultura NPK com k=0,5 (7º dia). Biomassa, clorofila-a, condutividade e nitrogênio inorgânico total não foram significativamente diferentes (p>0,05) durante o período experimental para as duas condições mixotróficas e meios de cultura. Os teores de proteína de H. pluvialis foram maiores no meio de cultura NPK em melaço pré-tratado, acima de 50% da biomassa seca. A produção anual de biomassa foi de 520 kg-1 de biomassa seca em melaço não tratado para os dois meios de cultura e de 650 e 520 kg-1 de biomassa seca em melaço pré-tratado para meios de cultura NPK e ME, respectivamente. O uso de meios de cultura NPK e ME em cultivo mixotrófico pode se tornar um novo protocolo adotado para o cultivo de H. pluvialis devido ao baixo custo e similar produção anual de biomassa.

Os efeitos do abastecimento tratado e não tratado com macrófitas sobre a qualidade da água e comunidade zooplanctônica foram avaliados em um viveiro de piscicultura com fluxo contínuo de água. Houve maior concentração de fósforo total e nitrogênio amoniacal na água não tratada (p<0,01). Na água de entrada sem tratamento de macrófitas foi observado maior número de espécies abundantes (9 espécies), contudo, a entrada de água tratada com macrófitas apresentou maior riqueza de espécies (31 espécies) zooplanctônicas. The three different diets were used and designated as: formulated diet (basal diet); live food diet (plankton) and mixed diet (formulated diet with plankton). The live food diet contained plankton belonging to an open pond. High mortality was reported with live food (plankton) treatment whereas higher percent survival occurred with formulated diet. Highest specific growth rate, weight gain and final weight were reported in the mixed diet treatment and were significantly different (p 0.01) from those in formulated diet and live food treatments. The gut contents of B. splendens in mixed diet and live food treatments comprised, Rotifera and Bacillariophyceae species in high percentages or rather, over 78% of total organisms. Lecane sp. was the most ingested zooplankton species by B. splendens in both treatments (mixed diet and live food), with the phytoplankton species Asterionella sp. and Melosira sp. respectively in mixed diet and in live food, respectively. Results indicated that the formulated diet influenced the water parameters dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids and pH. The live food in the open pond was not enough to improve the growth rate and percent survival of B. splendens. The growth performance of B. splendens; had the best results with mixed diet which was capable of maintaining speciess survival (82%) and development in artificial conditions, benefiting the culture management of ornamental fish.(AU)

Foram utilizadas três dietas experimentais e designadas como: dieta formulada (ração); alimento vivo (plâncton) e dieta mista (ração com plâncton). O plâncton pertence ao tanque externo de cultivo. RESUMO
The present study was carried out to evaluate the phytoplankton community and water quality in four parallel fishponds (FP1 to FP4) during one year. Some abiotic parameters of water column and phytoplankton was sampled in four sites, one in each fishpond. Similarity analysis showed that FP2 fishpond was markedly different for the others ponds with regard to phytoplankton community. Conductivity, orthophosphate, temperature, TSS and hardness parameters were significantly different (p<0.05) between fishponds and all limnological parameters were significantly different (p<0.01) among period (months). Organic matter and phosphorus of the sediment were significantly different (p<0.01) only among fishponds. In current study Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae occurred in most months. Cyanobacteria density in April and May was higher in all fishponds, at FP3 represented 71.4% in April and FP1 represented 78.7% in May of total reported, with chlorophyll-a content lower than 41 mg.L-1. The physical and chemical parameters of fishponds water constituted relations between the parameters and algae occurrence. The present study however, indicated that Cyanobacteria was more frequent in the fishponds after the fish grow-out period (April), and the water quality should be monitored more frequently in this period, due to the high total phosphorus, orthophosphate and chlorophyll-a contents.

Experiments were maintained batch mode and culture parameters were periodically measured during a 13-day period. Culture growth during the cultivation of algae Haematococcus pluvialis was determined qualitatively by cell counting, optical density, dry weight, ash content, amount of chlorophyll-a, total organic carbon content and by direct measuring of medium nutrients and some abiotic aspects. Vegetative cell growth was higher when cultured in 13-L with 1.33 x 10(5) cells.mL(-1) on the 12th day than when cultured in 250-L. Significant difference (p < 0.05) in the biology and water culture of H. pluvialis, with the exception of dry weight, ash, nitrite and ammonia, was reported between the volumes. Data obtained in current study for the upscale culture maintenance of H. pluvialis in laboratory conditions shows that it should be undertaken in a 13-L volume due to a greater time span of cells in a vegetative state, greater cell density, lipids and chlorophyll-a contents. Light was of paramount importance on the direct performance of H. pluvialis on the algal biological conditions.

Foram avaliadas a taxa de crescimento e condições do meio de cultura em volumes de 13-L e 250-L em sistema estático, durante o período de 13 dias para a microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. Foi determinada qualitativamente a contagem de células, densidade, peso seco, teor de cinzas, clorofila-a, teor de carbono orgânico total e avaliação de nutrientes e fatores abióticos do meio de cultura. O crescimento foi mais elevado em volume de 13-L com 1,33 x 105 células.mL1 no décimo segundo dia, do que em volume de 250-L. Em relação ao meio de cultivo e aspectos biológicos de H. pluvialis, foram observadas diferenças significativas (p 0,05) entre os dois volumes com exceção do peso seco, cinzas, nitrito e amônia. Para cultivo em larga escale de H. pluvialis é recomendado nestas condições laboratoriais, o volume de 13-L devido ao maior tempo das células em estado vegetativo, maior densidade celular e elevados teores de lipídios e clorofila-a. A luz interferiu diretamente nas condições biológicas de H. pluvialis.(AU)

Behavioral effects of a hydroalcoholic (60% ethanol) extract from the leaves of Salvia elegans Vahl (Lamiaceae) were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The extract was administered intraperitoneally and its effects on spontaneous motor activity (total motility, locomotion, rearing and grooming behavior) were monitored. Putative anxiolytic and antidepressant properties of Salvia elegans were studied in the elevated plus-maze test (EPM) and in the forced swimming test (FST), respectively. Deleterious effects of Salvia elegans on learning and memory were also studied by using active and passive avoidance paradigms. The results revealed that all doses (3.12, 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg) of the extract caused a significant decrease in total motility, locomotion, rearing and grooming behavior. Only the dose of 12.5 mg/kg increased the exploration of the EPM open arms in a similar way to that of diazepam (1 mg/kg). In the FST, all doses of the extract induced a reduction of immobility, in a similar way to that of fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) and imipramine (12.5 mg/kg), along with a significant increase in the time spent in swimming behavior. Acquisition of active avoidance responses was disrupted by pre-treatment with the extract, but retention of a passive avoidance response was not significantly modified. These results suggest that some of the components of the hydroalcoholic extract of Salvia elegans have psychotropic properties, which deserve further investigation.

Behavioral effects of a hydroalcoholic extract from leaves of Aloysia polystachya (Griseb.) Moldenke (Verbenaceae) were studied in female Sprague-Dawley rats. The extract was administered intraperitoneally and its effects on spontaneous motor activity (total motility, locomotion, rearing and grooming behavior) were monitored. Anxiolytic-like properties were studied in the elevated plus-maze (EPM) test and the possible antidepressant-like actions were evaluated in the forced swimming test (FST). The results revealed that high doses of the extract (25 and 50 mg/kg, i.p.) caused a significant decrease in total motility, locomotion, rearing and grooming behavior. All doses injected (from 1.56 to 50 mg/kg) increased the exploration of the EPM open arms in a similar way to that of diazepam (1 mg/kg, i.p.). In the FST, the extract (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg) was as effective as fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) and imipramine (12.5 mg/kg, i.p.) in reducing immobility, along with a significant increase in swimming and climbing, respectively. These results suggest that some of the components of the hydroalcoholic extract of A. polystachya, such as thujone and carvone among others, may have sedative, anxiolytic and antidepressant-like properties which deserve further investigation.
