BACKGROUND: Good stewardship of antibiotics can reduce the development and impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR); therefore, understanding farmers' antibiotic use is of interest to stakeholders. To date, few qualitative studies have looked at farmers' antibiotic use on dairy farms in the UK. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were used to explore 15 Scottish dairy farmers' antibiotic use behaviours and the factors influencing their antibiotic use on farms. RESULTS: Using an inductive process, the results from the interviews were analysed, and four key themes were extracted: use of antibiotics, awareness of AMR, determinants of antibiotic use and future aspirations. LIMITATIONS: Some of the farmers interviewed were wary about discussing their antibiotic use, which could mean that some contentious issues were not discussed. The farmers also all belonged to a single milk-buying group, which may limit the generalisability of the findings. CONCLUSIONS: The quantities of antibiotics used were felt to be driven by the disease prevalence on farms, cows being indoors more, increasing herd sizes resulting in increased stocking densities, retention of poorer cows and substandard housing. Farmer knowledge of antibiotics varied, and not all farmers interviewed were aware of AMR. The farm veterinarian, the press and peers were found to be the main sources of antibiotic information.

Anthelmintic resistance is a threat to global food security. In order to alleviate the selection pressure for resistance and maintain drug efficacy, management strategies increasingly aim to preserve a proportion of the parasite population in 'refugia', unexposed to treatment. While persuasive in its logic, and widely advocated as best practice, evidence for the ability of refugia-based approaches to slow the development of drug resistance in parasitic helminths is currently limited. Moreover, the conditions needed for refugia to work, or how transferable those are between parasite-host systems, are not known. This review, born of an international workshop, seeks to deconstruct the concept of refugia and examine its assumptions and applicability in different situations. We conclude that factors potentially important to refugia, such as the fitness cost of drug resistance, the degree of mixing between parasite sub-populations selected through treatment or not, and the impact of parasite life-history, genetics and environment on the population dynamics of resistance, vary widely between systems. The success of attempts to generate refugia to limit anthelmintic drug resistance are therefore likely to be highly dependent on the system in hand. Additional research is needed on the concept of refugia and the underlying principles for its application across systems, as well as empirical studies within systems that prove and optimise its usefulness.

Chlamydophila (C.) abortus, responsible for chlamydial abortion (commonly known as Enzootic Abortion of Ewes [EAE]), causes major financial losses to the sheep industry worldwide. There remain many uncertainties surrounding the epidemiology of EAE. The aim of this study was to construct an epidemiological model to simulate EAE based on current knowledge of the disease, and in doing so, identify knowledge gaps that need to be addressed through further research. Key parameters that impact upon the development of the disease, such as the rate of contact between naïve ewes and infected material, are defined. Sensitivity analysis was undertaken for parameter values that are unknown to explore their impact upon the pattern of disease. The simulated results show the importance of the transmission rate (i.e. contact) and the number of infected replacements introduced at the start of an outbreak. Depending upon the rate of transmission, the year in which the peak number of affected ewes occurs and the number of years over which a high number of animals are affected varies. This suggests that a better understanding of the underlying processes that drive transmission of C. abortus is needed. Furthermore, if infected ewes could be identified prior to parturition, when they shed the organism in large numbers, the impact of EAE on sheep flocks could be greatly reduced.
