RESUMO

New inorganic nanostructured matrices for fiber-reinforced composites with enhanced high-temperature stability were developed from alkali aluminosilicate polymers doped with different ultra-high-temperature ceramic (UHTC) particles. The alkali aluminosilicate matrices were synthesized at room temperature with a high SiO2:Al2O3 ratio and then further functionalized by doping with 4-5 wt % of micrometric SiC, ZrB2, ZrC, and HfC powders and finally thermally stabilized as glass-ceramics at 750 °C. The different UHTC-doped matrices were characterized according to their dimensional and microstructural changes after thermal cycling in air flux at 1000 °C. The first results showed that carbide-based UHTC powders improved the thermal stability of the matrices, preventing the excessive swelling of the material and the formation of detrimental voids that might result in the lack of adhesion with reinforcing fibers. Contrarily, the addition of ZrB2 resulted in an excessive matrix swelling at high temperature, thus proving no efficacy compared to the undoped matrix. Impregnation tests carried out on C-fiber fabrics showed good processability, adhesion to the fibers, and fracture pull-out, especially for carbide-based matrices.

RESUMO

The stability of nanostructured metal alloys is currently being extensively investigated, and several mathematical models have been developed to describe the thermodynamics of these systems. However, model capability in terms of thermal stability predictions strongly relies on grain boundary-related parameters that are difficult to measure or estimate accurately. To overcome this limitation, a novel theoretical approach is proposed and adopted in this work to identify W-based nanocrystalline alloys which are potentially able to show thermodynamic stability. A comparison between model outcomes and experimental findings is reported for two selected alloys, namely W-Ag and W-Al. Experimental results clearly highlight that W-Ag mixtures retain a segregated structure on relatively coarse length scales even after prolonged mechanical treatments. Moreover, annealing at moderate temperatures readily induces demixing of the constituent elements. In contrast, homogeneous nanostructured W-Al solid solutions are obtained by ball milling of elemental powders. These alloys show enhanced thermal stability with respect to pure W even at high homologous temperatures. Experimental evidences agree with model predictions for both the investigated systems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: In this work long term stability of a zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composite was investigated. METHODS: Accelerated aging tests under hydrothermal environment, in autoclave and hot water, at different temperature, was conducted on material sample. Tetragonal to monoclinic transformation was evaluated by XRD analysis and the monoclinic content was plot as a function of the exposure time. The kinetic of transformation was studied by means Mehl-Avrami-Johnson (MAJ) nucleation and growth model. RESULTS: An activation energy for tetragonal to monoclinic transformation of 99 kJ/mol was found by the Arrhenius plot of reaction rate, value in agreement with other bibliography works regarding Y-TZP and alumina-zirconia composites. The in vivo hydrothermal stability simulation, estimated by the obtained activation energy, predicts in 65 years the time necessary to reach 25 vol% of monoclinic phase. SIGNIFICANCE: These results support the material suitability in biomedical field, especially in dentistry applications as implantology.
