RESUMO

An extraoral approach to the treatment of dislocations and subluxations of the lower jaw by means of a special outfit holds promise since it has no contraindications, does not cause any complications, fully preserves lower jaw function, shortens the treatment period, and enables surgical interventions to be avoided. The outfit is attached to the patient's head and is only removed overnight. The treatment may last 1.5 to 3 months.

RESUMO

The technique is designed to assess the height of occlusion using a new device which includes sensors to measure the strength of jaw occlusion as related to the interalveolar distance. The interalveolar distance corresponding to the first maximal load recorded in forced occlusion is assumed to represent the height of occlusion of central relationship of jaws. This technique is useful to avoid errors inherent to the anatomicophysiological technique and provides the optimal conditions for the activity of maxillofacial muscles. This increases the functional validity of dentures fabricated with the new device.

RESUMO

On the basis of their own clinical material the authors distinguish five kinds of defects and deformations of the orbit and give well-grounded recommendations for choosing the methods of prosthetics and plastic operations for each of them. The authors emphasize that the necessary condition of successful elimination of defects of the orbit is the joint work of a maxillofacial surgeon and an orthopedist. Good cosmetic results were obtained when using complex surgical and orthopedic treatment of 12 patients.

RESUMO

An attempt is made to explain certain variability for display of Costen's syndrome. For this purpose, in 20 macerated skulls of mature persons certain structural peculiarities of separate elements of the temporomandibular joint (distance from the center of recess of the articular fossa up to the anterior area of the petrotympanic fissure, thickness of the tympanic part at the beginning of the fissure, its length and width at either side) have been studied. An essential individual variability of diameters is noted. In the group of persons where the measurements are taken from the right side, a greater right-sided variability for the length of the fissure is noted, and for the distance from the center of the recess of the articular fossa up to the petrotympanic fissure-the least absolute size is noted.
