RESUMO

When pet dogs demonstrate certain serious problem behaviors, this may lead owners to choose behavioral euthanasia. However, research on behavioral euthanasia of pet dogs is sparse and previously published papers have not specifically sampled owners who made the decision to euthanize for behavior. The Behavioral Euthanasia in Pet Dogs Questionnaire was created to collect a wide range of information from dog owners who made behavioral euthanasia decisions. Using this survey, we explored the types of behaviors associated with behavioral euthanasia. Human-directed aggression, especially toward adults living in the household, was the most frequently reported reason for choosing behavioral euthanasia; followed by aggression toward other animals, especially other dogs living in the same household. The majority of dogs displaying human-directed or other animal-directed aggression were reported to have bitten and broken skin, and many of these had bitten in multiple or severe incidents. Most dogs had lived in their homes and displayed problem behaviors for over a year prior to behavioral euthanasia, and the euthanasia occurred at a variety of ages, from less than 1 year old to 18 years old. Additional research is required to understand environmental or nonbehavioral factors contributing to the behavioral euthanasia of companion animals, as well as the psychosocial and emotional impact of behavioral euthanasia on the human experience. Understanding the behavioral factors associated with behavioral euthanasia can direct resources toward problem behavior interventions, improve public education about animal behavior, and strengthen the human-animal bond.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare physiological responses to myofascial release (MFR) and passive limb movement (PLM). DESIGN: Nineteen (23 ± 2.6yrs) adults (10 men and 9 women) completed two experiments on separate days: MFR and PLM. Participation included collecting ultrasound images, blood pressure, and heart rate (HR) as well as performing a vascular occlusion test (VOT). The VOT assessed muscle tissue oxygenation (StO2) with near-infrared spectroscopy. Experiments consisted of moving the upper limb to release subtle barriers of resistance in the muscle/fascia (MFR) and passive, assisted range of motion (PLM). RESULTS: There was a significantly (p = 0.012) greater decrease in HR following MFR (-7.3 ± 5.2 BPM) than PLM (-1.3 ± 0.9 BPM). There was an equivalent change in brachial blood flow (-17.3 ± 23.0 vs. -11.9 ± 14.9 mL min-1; p = 0.37) and vascular conductance (-19.3 ± 31.1 vs. -12.4 ± 15.3 mL min-1 mmHg-1; p = 0.38). Microvascular responses differed between the experiments such that MFR exhibited greater area under the curve (AUC, 1503 ± 499.1%∙s-1 vs. 1203 ± 411.1%∙s-1; p = 0.021) and time to maximum StO2 (40.0 ± 8.4s vs. 35.8 ± 7.3s; p = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS: As evidenced by HR, MFR induced greater parasympathetic activity than PLM. The greater AUC and time to StO2max following MFR suggested a spillover effect to induce prolonged hyper-saturation. These results may be of interest to those investigating possible MFR-related rehabilitative benefits.

Buprenorphine is commonly used as a treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Transition to buprenorphine traditionally has been done using a low-dose initiation regimen due to concerns surrounding precipitated withdrawal. There are increasing data supporting use of a high-dose initiation regimen in the nonpregnant population. This retrospective case series describes six individuals with OUD who underwent high-dose buprenorphine initiation in pregnancy. There were no instances of sedation, respiratory depression, supplemental oxygen use, or death. All individuals were successfully transitioned to buprenorphine. These findings provide support for high-dose buprenorphine initiation in pregnancy, but future large studies are needed.

Antifouling coatings containing biocidal agents can be used to prevent the accumulation of biotic deposits on submerged surfaces; however, several commercial biocides can negatively affect the ecosystem. In this study, various formulations of a potential biocide product comprising copper nanoparticles and capsaicin supported on zeolite ZSM-5 were analyzed to determine the influence of the concentration of each component. The incorporation of copper was evidenced by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Similarly, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that capsaicin was supported on the zeolite surface. The presence of capsaicin on the external zeolite surface significantly reduced the surface area of the zeolite. Finally, bacterial growth inhibition analysis showed that copper nanoparticles inhibited the growth of strains Idiomarina loihiensis UCO25, Pseudoalteromonas sp. UCO92, and Halomonas boliviensis UCO24 while the organic component acted as a reinforcing biocide.

Range expansions, whether they are biological invasions or climate change-mediated range shifts, may have profound ecological and evolutionary consequences for plant-soil interactions. Range-expanding plants encounter soil biota with which they have a limited coevolutionary history, especially when introduced to a new continent. Past studies have found mixed results on whether plants experience positive or negative soil feedback interactions in their novel range, and these effects often change over time. One important theoretical explanation is that plants locally adapt to the soil pathogens and mutualists in their novel range. We tested this hypothesis in Dittrichia graveolens, an annual plant that is both expanding its European native range, initially coinciding with climate warming, and rapidly invading in California after human introduction. In parallel greenhouse experiments on both continents, we used plant genotypes and soils from five locations at the core and edge of each range to compare plant growth in soil inhabited by D. graveolens and nearby control microsites as a measure of plant-soil feedback. Plant-soil interactions were highly idiosyncratic across each range. On average, plant-soil feedbacks were more positive in the native range than in the exotic range. In line with the strongly heterogeneous pattern of soil responses along our biogeographic gradients, we found no evidence for evolutionary differentiation between plant genotypes from the core to edge of either range. Our results suggest that the evolution of plant-soil interactions during range expansion may be more strongly driven by local evolutionary dynamics varying across the range than by large-scale biogeographic shifts.

BACKGROUND: Although urine drug testing can have vast legal and social ramifications, its interpretation during pregnancy and after birth remains not well understood. Fentanyl metabolism is altered by an individual's genetics, history of opioid use, and liver function. However, little is known about the clearance of fentanyl or its primary metabolite, norfentanyl, in the peripartum period. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify and describe cases of delayed urine norfentanyl clearance in the pregnancy and postpartum period within our institution. STUDY DESIGN: This study described 3 cases of delayed urine norfentanyl clearance in pregnant and postpartum individuals in a colocated obstetrics, postpartum, and addiction medicine program. This program included prescriptions for medication for opioid use disorder and weekly urine drug testing with fentanyl immunoassay with reflex confirmation testing with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for positive results with a limit of detection of 2.5 ng/mL. RESULTS: Low levels of norfentanyl (<16.3 ng/mL) were detected in urine 294 days, 126 days, and 231 days after the last fentanyl use. Patient self-reported abstinence was supported by consistently negative urine fentanyl levels throughout the collection period, compliant weekly urine drug tests that were otherwise only positive for buprenorphine, and negative fentanyl and norfentanyl in umbilical cord toxicology. CONCLUSION: Despite compliance in a medication for opioid use disorder program, the presence of norfentanyl in urine has significant consequences on the maternal-child dyad in the postpartum period. Caution should be used when using low levels of norfentanyl to determine an individual's abstinence, as it can lead to further discrimination against women in medication for opioid use disorder programs.

OBJECTIVE: We examined sex-specific microvascular reactivity and hemodynamic responses under conditions of augmented resting blood flow induced by passive heating compared to normal blood flow. METHODS: Thirty-eight adults (19 females) completed a vascular occlusion test (VOT) on two occasions preceded by rest with or without passive heating in a randomized, counterbalanced order. Skeletal muscle tissue oxygenation (StO2, %) was assessed with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and the rate of desaturation and resaturation as well as maximal StO2 (StO2max) and prolonged hypersaturation (area under the curve, StO2AUC) were quantified. Before the VOT, brachial artery blood flow (BABF), vascular conductance, and relative BABF (BABF normalized to forearm lean mass) were determined. Sex × condition ANOVAs were used. A p-value ≤.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Twenty minutes of heating increased BABF compared to the control (102.9 ± 28.3 vs. 36.0 ± 20.9 mL min-1; p < .01). Males demonstrated greater BABF than females (91.9 ± 34.0 vs. 47.0 ± 19.1 mL min-1; p < .01). There was no sex difference in normalized BABF. There were no significant interactions for NIRS-VOT outcomes, but heat did increase the rate of desaturation (-0.140 ± 0.02 vs. -0.119 ± 0.03% s-1; p < .01), whereas regardless of condition, males exhibited greater rates of resaturation and StO2max than females. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that blood flow is not the primary factor causing sex differences in NIRS-VOT outcomes.

The function of micro- and macrovessels within the peripheral vasculature has been identified as a target for the investigation of potential cardiovascular-based promoters of cognitive decline. However, little remains known regarding the interaction of the micro- and macrovasculature as it relates to cognitive function, especially in cognitively healthy individuals. Therefore, our purpose was to unravel peripheral factors that contribute to the association between age and processing speed. Ninety-nine individuals (51 men, 48 women) across the adult life span (19-81 yr) were used for analysis. Arterial stiffness was quantified as carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV) and near-infrared spectroscopy assessed maximal tissue oxygenation (Sto2max) following a period of ischemia. Processing speed was evaluated with Trail Making Test (TMT) Parts A and B. Measures of central (cPP) and peripheral pulse pressure (pPP) were also collected. Moderated mediation analyses were conducted to determine contributions to the age and processing speed relation, and first-order partial correlations were used to assess associations while controlling for the linear effects of age. A P ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. At low levels of Sto2max, there was a significant positive (b = 1.92; P = 0.005) effect of cfPWV on time to completion on TMT part A. In addition, cPP (P = 0.028) and pPP (P = 0.027) remained significantly related to part A when controlling for age. These results suggested that the peripheral microvasculature may be a valuable target for delaying cognitive decline, especially in currently cognitively healthy individuals. Furthermore, we reinforced current evidence that pulse pressure is a key endpoint for trials aimed at preventing or delaying the onset of cognitive decline.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Arterial stiffness partially mediates the association between age and processing speed in the presence of low microvascular function, as demarcated by maximum tissue oxygenation following ischemia. Central and peripheral pulse pressure remained associated with processing speed even after controlling for age. Our findings were derived from a sample that was determined to be cognitively healthy, which highlights the potential for these outcomes to be considered during trials aimed at the prevention of cognitive decline.

Data on the liver transplant (LT) outcomes of women with acute liver failure (ALF) due to liver diseases unique to pregnancy (P-ALF) are limited. Using United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) data (1987-2021), we analyzed waitlist and post-LT outcomes of ALF in women of childbearing age comparing P-ALF versus ALF due to liver diseases not unique to pregnancy. Baseline characteristics were compared between groups at the time of listing for LT. Of 3542 females aged 16-43 years and listed for LT for ALF, 84 (2%) listed for P-ALF were less likely to be Black (11 vs. 21%, p =0.033), have lower international normalized ratio (2.74 vs. 4.53 p <0.002), but more likely to have respiratory failure (56% vs. 41%, p <0.005), be on pressors (58% vs. 43%, p <0.005), and require dialysis (23% vs. 10%, p <0.001). The cumulative 90-day waitlist mortality (WLM) was lower in P-ALF vs. ALF due to liver diseases not unique to pregnancy (7.4 vs. 16.6%, p <0.001). Posttransplant survival rates at 5 years were similar (82% vs. 79%, p =0.89). In a Fine and Gray regression model controlled for listing year and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, 90-day WLM was lower in P-ALF with a sub-HR of 0.42 (95% CI: 0.19-0.94, p =0.035). Of 84 women with P-ALF and listed for LT, 45 listed for hemolysis-elevated liver enzymes-low platelets (HELLP) versus 39 for acute fatty liver of pregnancy had higher 90-day WLM (19.3% vs. 5.7% p <0.005). The 90-day WLM was about 10-fold higher in HELLP versus acute fatty liver of pregnancy with a sub-HR of 9.97 (95% CI: 1.64-60.55, p =0.013). In this UNOS database analysis of ALF among women of childbearing age, the waitlist outcome is better in women with P-ALF compared to women with ALF due to liver diseases not unique to pregnancy. Among women with P-ALF, the 90-day WLM is worse for HELLP versus acute fatty liver of pregnancy. Further studies are needed to improve the management of HELLP and prevent the development of ALF in this subgroup population.

Tau PET has enabled the visualization of paired helical filaments of 3 or 4 C-terminal repeat tau in Alzheimer disease (AD), but its ability to detect aggregated tau in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) spectrum disorders is uncertain. We investigated 2-(2-([18F]fluoro)pyridin-4-yl)-9H-pyrrolo[2,3-b:4,5c']dipyridine ([18F]PI-2620), a newer tracer with ex vivo evidence for binding to FTLD tau, in a convenience sample of patients with suspected FTLD and AD using a static acquisition protocol and parametric SUV ratio (SUVr) images. Methods: We analyzed [18F]PI-2620 PET data from 65 patients with clinical diagnoses associated with AD or FTLD neuropathology; most (60/65) also had amyloid-ß (Aß) PET. Scans were acquired 30-60 min after injection; SUVr maps (reference, inferior cerebellar cortex) were created for the full acquisition and for 10-min truncated sliding windows (30-40, 35-45,…50-60 min). Age- and sex-adjusted z score maps were computed for each patient, relative to 23 Aß-negative cognitively healthy controls (HC). Mean SUVr in the globus pallidus, substantia nigra, subthalamic nuclei, dentate nuclei, white matter, and temporal gray matter was extracted for the full and truncated windows. Results: Patients with suspected AD neuropathology (Aß-positive patients with mild cognitive impairment or AD dementia) showed high-intensity temporoparietal cortex-predominant [18F]PI-2620 binding. At the group level, patients with clinical diagnoses associated with FTLD (progressive supranuclear palsy with Richardson syndrome [PSP Richardson syndrome], corticobasal syndrome, and nonfluent-variant primary progressive aphasia) exhibited higher globus pallidus SUVr than did HCs; pallidal retention was highest in the PSP Richardson syndrome group, in whom SUVr was correlated with symptom severity (ρ = 0.53, P = 0.05). At the individual level, only half of PSP Richardson syndrome, corticobasal syndrome, and nonfluent-variant primary progressive aphasia patients had a pallidal SUVr above that of HCs. Temporal SUVr discriminated AD patients from HCs with high accuracy (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.83-1.00]) for all time windows, whereas discrimination between patients with PSP Richardson syndrome and HCs using pallidal SUVr was fair regardless of time window (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.77 [95% CI, 0.61-0.92] at 30-40 min vs. 0.81 [95% CI, 0.66-0.96] at 50-60 min; P = 0.67). Conclusion: [18F]PI-2620 SUVr shows an intense and consistent signal in AD but lower-intensity, heterogeneous, and rapidly decreasing binding in patients with suspected FTLD. Further work is needed to delineate the substrate of [18F]PI-2620 binding and the usefulness of [18F]PI2620 SUVr quantification outside the AD continuum.

Adults do not engage in enough physical activity. Investigating cognitive and physiological factors related to improving this behavior-and reducing health risks-remains a public health priority. Our objective was to assess whether cognitive flexibility influenced perceptions and choice of exercise programs and whether flexibility was associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Independent sample groups of college-aged adults (18-24 yrs) participated in two studies. Data were collected on individuals' degree of cognitive flexibility (both self-reported and objectively measured), perceptions and choice of exercise programs, and health status markers known to be associated with CVD (vascular function, muscular strength, and body composition). Vascular function was assessed with a near-infrared spectroscopy device, strength was defined as handgrip, and body composition was estimated via digital circumferences. Self-reported flexibility reliably predicted individuals' choice of exercise program and perceptions of effort required for success on an exercise program. The relationships among CVD risk factors and objectively measured cognitive flexibility were not significant, demonstrating that identifying a healthy individual's degree of performance-based cognitive flexibility does not predict health status. Furthermore, although greater self-reported trait flexibility (rigidity) is known to predict higher (lower) likelihood of physical activity, this finding should not be extrapolated to also assume that flexibility (rigidity), as measured by objective cognitive tests, is associated with reduced CVD risk in healthy adults. We posit a rationale for how understanding cognitive flexibility and rigidity can play an impactful role in improving adherence to exercise prescriptions targeted to reducing risks.

During an escape from predators, many animals need to evaluate and choose a refuge within seconds. We investigated refuge choice in the amphibious blackspotted rockskipper, Entomacrodus striatus, in Moorea, French Polynesia. Rockskippers are small combtooth blennies that inhabit rocky beaches and jetties at the aquatic/terrestrial interface. They are conspicuous for their eponymous jumping to/from refugia among rocks when threatened. We have observed refugia with both multiple conspecifics and solitary fish in the field, and here tested whether fish choose refugia that are occupied by conspecifics in the laboratory. E. striatus chose unoccupied refugia on the opposite side of the experimental tank in 11/14 trials, a significantly greater number of times than they chose occupied refugia. In 3/14 trials, fish chose occupied refugia, indicating that refuge occupation does not prohibit their use by conspecifics. We hypothesize that chemical stress signals from the occupying fish deter most fish from choosing the same refuge.

Dittrichia graveolens (L.) Greuter, or stinkwort, is a weedy annual plant within the family Asteraceae. The species is recognized for the rapid expansion of both its native and introduced ranges: in Europe, it has expanded its native distribution northward from the Mediterranean basin by nearly 7 °C latitude since the mid-20th century, while in California and Australia the plant is an invasive weed of concern. Here, we present the first de novo D. graveolens genome assembly (1N = 9 chromosomes), including complete chloroplast (151,013 bp) and partial mitochondrial genomes (22,084 bp), created using Pacific Biosciences HiFi reads and Dovetail Omni-C data. The final primary assembly is 835 Mbp in length, of which 98.1% are represented by 9 scaffolds ranging from 66 to 119 Mbp. The contig N50 is 74.9 Mbp and the scaffold N50 is 96.9 Mbp, which, together with a 98.8% completeness based on the BUSCO embryophyta10 database containing 1,614 orthologs, underscores the high quality of this assembly. This pseudo-molecule-scale genome assembly is a valuable resource for our fundamental understanding of the genomic consequences of range expansion under global change, as well as comparative genomic studies in the Asteraceae.

BACKGROUND: Political affiliation has been associated with vaccine uptake, but whether this association holds in pregnancy, when individuals are recommended to receive multiple vaccinations, remains to be studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between community-level political affiliation and vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis; influenza; and COVID-19 in pregnant and postpartum individuals. STUDY DESIGN: A survey was conducted about tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis and influenza vaccinations in early 2021, with a follow-up survey of COVID-19 vaccination among the same individuals at a tertiary care academic medical center in the Midwest. Geocoded residential addresses were linked at the census tract to the Environmental Systems Research Institute 2021 Market Potential Index, which ranks a community in comparison to the US national average. The exposure for this analysis was community-level political affiliation, defined by the Market Potential Index as very conservative, somewhat conservative, centrist, somewhat liberal, and very liberal (reference). The outcomes were self-reported vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis; influenza; and COVID-19 in the peripartum period. Modified Poisson regression was used and adjusted for age, employment, trimester at assessment, and medical comorbidities. RESULTS: Of 438 assessed individuals, 37% lived in a community characterized by very liberal political affiliation, 11% as somewhat liberal, 18% as centrist, 12% as somewhat conservative, and 21% as very conservative. Overall, 72% and 58% of individuals reported receiving tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis and influenza vaccinations, respectively. Of the 279 individuals who responded to the follow-up survey, 53% reported receiving COVID-19 vaccination. Individuals living in a community characterized by very conservative political affiliation were less likely to report vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (64% vs 72%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.83; 95% confidence interval, 0.69-0.99); influenza (49% vs 58%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.79; 95% confidence interval, 0.62-1.00); and COVID-19 (35% vs 53%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.65; 95% confidence interval, 0.44-0.96) than those in a community characterized by very liberal political affiliation. Individuals living in a community characterized by centrist political affiliation were less likely to report vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (63% vs 72%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.82; 95% confidence interval, 0.68-0.99) and influenza (44% vs 58%; adjusted risk ratio, 0.70; 95% confidence interval, 0.54-0.92) than those in a community characterized by very liberal political affiliation. CONCLUSION: Compared with pregnant and postpartum individuals living in communities characterized by very liberal political beliefs, those living in communities characterized by very conservative political beliefs were less likely to report vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis; influenza; and COVID-19, and those in communities characterized by centrist political beliefs were less likely to report vaccinations for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis and influenza. Increasing vaccine uptake in the peripartum period may need to consider engaging an individual's broader sociopolitical milieu.

Deficiency of iron­sulfur (FeS) clusters promotes metabolic rewiring of the endothelium and the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in vivo. Joining a growing number of FeS biogenesis proteins critical to pulmonary endothelial function, recent data highlighted that frataxin (FXN) reduction drives Fe-S-dependent genotoxic stress and senescence across multiple types of pulmonary vascular disease. Trinucleotide repeat mutations in the FXN gene cause Friedreich's ataxia, a disease characterized by cardiomyopathy and neurodegeneration. These tissue-specific phenotypes have historically been attributed to mitochondrial reprogramming and oxidative stress. Whether FXN coordinates both nuclear and mitochondrial processes in the endothelium is unknown. Here, we aim to identify the mitochondria-specific effects of FXN deficiency in the endothelium that predispose to pulmonary hypertension. Our data highlight an Fe-S-driven metabolic shift separate from previously described replication stress whereby FXN knockdown diminished mitochondrial respiration and increased glycolysis and oxidative species production. In turn, FXN-deficient endothelial cells had increased vasoconstrictor production (EDN1) and decreased nitric oxide synthase expression (NOS3). These data were observed in primary pulmonary endothelial cells after pharmacologic inhibition of FXN, mice carrying a genetic endothelial deletion of FXN, and inducible pluripotent stem cell-derived endothelial cells from patients with FXN mutations. Altogether, this study indicates FXN is an upstream driver of pathologic aberrations in metabolism and genomic stability. Moreover, our study highlights FXN-specific vasoconstriction in vivo, prompting future studies to investigate available and novel PH therapies in contexts of FXN deficiency.

Men and women exhibit different near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) outcomes in response to vascular occlusion tests (VOT), which may be due to phenotypic characteristics or different degrees of desaturation during ischemia. The minimum skeletal muscle tissue oxygenation (StO2min) observed during a VOT may be the primary determinant of reactive hyperemic (RH) responses. Our purpose was to determine the contribution StO2min and participant characteristics including adipose tissue thickness (ATT), lean body mass (LBM), muscular strength, and limb circumference to NIRS-derived indexes of RH. Also, we aimed to determine if matching StO2min would eliminate NIRS-VOT sex differences. Thirty-one young adults completed one or two VOTs during which the vastus lateralis was continuously assessed for StO2. The men and women each completed a standard VOT with a 5-min ischemic phase. The men completed a second VOT with a shortened ischemic phase to produce a matching StO2min to the minimum of the women observed during the standard VOT. Mean sex differences were determined with t tests, and relative contributions were assessed with multiple regression and model comparison approaches. During the 5-min ischemic phase, the men exhibited greater upslopes (1.97 ± 0.66 vs. 1.23 ± 0.59%·s-1) and greater StO2max than the women (80.3 ± 4.17 vs. 76.2 ± 2.86%). Analysis revealed StO2min was a greater contributor to upslope than sex and/or ATT. For StO2max, sex was the only significant predictor (r2 = 0.26, men ∼4.09% > women). Experimentally matching StO2min did not eliminate the sex differences in upslope or StO2max, suggesting that characteristics other than the degree of desaturation primarily provoke sex differences in RH.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Men exhibit greater values of reactive hyperemia than women even when controlling for the magnitude of desaturation during transient ischemia. Factors other than the ischemic vasodilatory stimulus, such as skeletal muscle mass and quality, likely provoke the commonly reported sex differences in reactive hyperemia measured by near-infrared spectroscopy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the physiological responses resulting from an acute blood flow restriction resistance exercise bout with two different cuff pressures in young, healthy men and women. METHODS: Thirty adults (18-30 yr) completed a bilateral leg extension blood flow restriction bout consisting of four sets (30-15-15-15 repetitions), with cuffs applied at pressures corresponding to 40% and 60% of the minimum arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) needed to completely collapse the femoral arteries. During each of these conditions (40% and 60% AOP), physiological measures of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and EMG amplitude (EMG AMP) were collected from the dominant or nondominant vastus lateralis. After each set, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were collected, whereas only at baseline and at the end of the bout, mean arterial pressure (MAP) was assessed. Separate mixed-factorial ANOVA models were used to examine mean differences in the change in EMG AMP and NIRS parameters during each set. The absolute RPE and MAP values were also examined with separate ANOVAs. A P value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Regardless of sex or cuff pressure, the change in EMG AMP was lower in set 1 (14.8%) compared with the remaining sets (22.6%-27.0%). The 40% AOP condition elicited the greatest changes in oxy[heme] and deoxy[heme], while also providing lower RPEs. For MAP, there was an effect for time such that MAP increased from preexercise (87.5 ± 4.3 mm Hg) to postexercise (104.5 ± 4.1 mm Hg). CONCLUSIONS: The major findings suggested that the 40% AOP condition permitted the greatest amount of recovery during the interset rest. In addition, there did not seem to be any meaningful sex-related difference in this sample of young healthy adults.

Four recent cases utilizing transabdominal motor-evoked potentials (TaMEPs) are presented as illustrative of the monitoring technique during lumbosacral fusion, sciatic nerve tumor resection, cauda equina tumor resection, and lumbar decompression. Case 1: In a high-grade lumbosacral spondylolisthesis revision fusion, both transcranial motor-evoked potentials (TcMEPs) and TaMEPs detected a transient focal loss of left tibialis anterior response in conjunction with L5 nerve root decompression. Case 2: In a sciatic nerve tumor resection, TcMEPs responses were lost but TaMEPs remained unchanged, the patient was neurologically intact postoperatively. Case 3: TaMEPs were acquired during an L1-L3 intradural extramedullary cauda equina tumor resection utilizing a unique TaMEP stimulation electrode. Case 4: TaMEPs were successfully acquired with little anesthetic fade utilizing an anesthetic regimen of 1.1 MAC Sevoflurane during a lumbar decompression. While the first two cases present TaMEPs and TcMEPs side-by-side, demonstrating TaMEPs correlating to TcMEPs (Case 1) or a more accurate reflection of patient outcome (Case 2), no inference regarding the accuracy of TaMEPs to monitor nerve elements during cauda equina surgery (Cases 3) or the lumbar decompression presented in Case 4 should be made as these are demonstrations of technique, not utility.
