RESUMO

There is a growing need for sensing materials that can provide multiple sensing capabilities for wearable devices, implantable sensors, and diagnostics tools. As complex human physiology requires materials that can simultaneously detect and respond to slow and fast pressure fluctuations. Mimicking the slow adaptive (SA) and fast adaptive (FA) mechanoreceptors in skin can lead to the development of dual sensing electrospun polymer nanocomposites for biomedical applications. These dual sensing nanocomposites can provide simultaneous sensing of both slow and fast pressure fluctuations, making them ideal for applications such as monitoring vital signs, detecting a wider range of movements and pressures. Here we develop a novel dual sensing PVDF-HFP-based nanocomposite that combines the advantages of capacitive and piezoelectric properties through controling electrospinning environment and processing parameters, polymer solution composition, and addition of nucleating agents such as Carbon Black (CB) to enhance the crystalline development of ß-phase, fibre thickness, and morphology. The developed PVDF-HFP/CB nanocomposite presents and response to both slow and fast pressure fluctuations with high capacitance (5.37 nF) and output voltage (1.51 V) allowing for accurate and reliable measurements.

RESUMO

Smart textiles are transforming the future of wearable technology, and due to that, there has been a great deal of new research looking for alternative energy storage. Supercapacitors offer high discharge rates, flexibility, and long life cycles and can be integrated fully into a textile. Optimization of these new systems includes utilizing electrically conductive materials, employing successful electrostatic charge and/or faradaic responses, and fabricating a textile-based energy storage system without disrupting comfort, washability, and life cycle. This paper examines recent developments in fabrication methods and materials used to create textile supercapacitors and what challenges still remain.

This study investigated the print homogeneity of Ti-6Al-4 V alloy parts, when printed over a large build area of 250 × 250 × 170 mm3, using a production scale laser powder bed additive manufacturing system. The effect of part location across this large build area was investigated based on printed part porosity, microstructure, hardness, and tensile properties. In addition, a Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) treatment was carried out on the as-built parts, to evaluate its impact on the material properties. A small increase in part porosity from 0.01 to 0.09%, was observed with increasing distance from the argon gas flow inlet, which was located on one side of the build plate, during printing. This effect, which was found to be independent of height from the build plate, is likely to be associated with enhanced levels of condensate or spatter residue, being deposited at distances, further from the gas flow. Despite small differences in porosity, no significant differences were obtained for microstructural features such as prior ß grain, α lath thickness, and phase fraction, over the entire build area. Due to this, mechanical performances such as hardness and tensile strengths were also found to be homogenous across the build area. Additionally, it was also observed based on the lattice constants that partial in-situ decomposition of α ' → α + ß phases occurred during printing. Post HIP treatment result showed a decrease of 7 and 6%, in the yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS), respectively, which was associated with a coarsening of α lath widths. The potential of the laser powder bed system for large area printing was successfully demonstrated based on the homogenous microstructure and mechanical properties of the Ti-6Al-4 V alloy parts.

Additive manufacturing is one the most promising fabrication strategies for the fabrication of bone tissue scaffolds using biodegradable semi-crystalline polymers. During the fabrication process, polymeric material in a molten state is deposited in a platform and starts to solidify while cooling down. The build-up of consecutive layers reheats the previously deposited material, introducing a complex thermal cycle with impacts on the overall properties of printed scaffolds. Therefore, the accurate prediction of these thermal cycles is significantly important to properly design the additively manufactured polymer scaffolds and the bonding between the layers. This paper presents a novel multi-stage numerical model, integrating a 2D representation of the dynamic deposition process and a 3D thermal evolution model to simulate the fabrication process. Numerical simulations show how the deposition velocity controls the spatial dimensions of the individual deposition layers and the cooling process when consecutive layers are deposited during polymer printing. Moreover, numerical results show a good agreement with experimental results.

The use of biocompatible and biodegradable porous scaffolds produced via additive manufacturing is one of the most common approaches in tissue engineering. The geometric design of tissue engineering scaffolds (e.g., pore size, pore shape, and pore distribution) has a significant impact on their biological behavior. Fluid flow dynamics are important for understanding blood flow through a porous structure, as they determine the transport of nutrients and oxygen to cells and the flushing of toxic waste. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of the scaffold architecture, pore size and distribution on its biological performance using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Different blood flow velocities (BFV) induce wall shear stresses (WSS) on cells. WSS values above 30 mPa are detrimental to their growth. In this study, two scaffold designs were considered: rectangular scaffolds with uniform square pores (300, 350, and 450 µm), and anatomically designed circular scaffolds with a bone-like structure and pore size gradient (476-979 µm). The anatomically designed scaffolds provided the best fluid flow conditions, suggesting a 24.21% improvement in the biological performance compared to the rectangular scaffolds. The numerical observations are aligned with those of previously reported biological studies.

Two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is becoming increasingly interesting for wider engineering applications. Thermal exfoliation is being suggested as a facile technology to produce large quantities of 2D h-BN. Further optimization of the process requires fundamental understanding of the exfoliation mechanism, which is hardly realized by ex situ techniques. In this study, in situ synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction experiments are conducted while heat treating bulk h-BN up to 1273 K. During the heating process, linear expansion of c-axis is observed and the contraction of a-axis up to around 750 K is consistent with previous research. However, a changing behavior from contraction to expansion in a-axis direction is newly observed when heating over 750 K. With the consideration of previous thermally oxidation studies, a hypothesis of thermal assisted exfoliation with oxygen interstitial and substitution of nitrogen at high temperature is proposed.

Capillary-driven ink infiltration through a porous powder bed in three-dimensional (3D) binder jet printing (inkjet printing onto a powder bed) controls the printing resolution and as-printed "green" strength of the resulting object. However, a full understanding of the factors controlling the kinetics of the infiltration remains incomplete. Here, high-resolution in situ synchrotron radiography provides time-resolved imaging of the penetration of an aqueous solution of eythylene glycol through a porous alumina powder bed, used as a model system. A static drop-on-demand inkjet printer was used to dispense liquid droplets onto a powder surface. The subsequent migration of the liquid front and its interactions with powder particles were tracked using fast synchrotron X-radiography in the Diamond Synchrotron, with phase-contrast imaging at a frame rate of 500 Hz. Image processing and analysis reveal that both the time-dependent increment in the wetting area and the propagation of the "interface leading edge" exhibit heterogeneous behavior in both temporal and spatial domains. However, mean infiltration kinetics are shown to be consistent with existing infiltration models based on the Washburn equation modified to account for the spreading of the liquid drop on the powder surface and using a modified term for the bed porosity.

Internal flow behaviour during melt-pool-based metal manufacturing remains unclear and hinders progression to process optimisation. In this contribution, we present direct time-resolved imaging of melt pool flow dynamics from a high-energy synchrotron radiation experiment. We track internal flow streams during arc welding of steel and measure instantaneous flow velocities ranging from 0.1 m s-1 to 0.5 m s-1. When the temperature-dependent surface tension coefficient is negative, bulk turbulence is the main flow mechanism and the critical velocity for surface turbulence is below the limits identified in previous theoretical studies. When the alloy exhibits a positive temperature-dependent surface tension coefficient, surface turbulence occurs and derisory oxides can be entrapped within the subsequent solid as result of higher flow velocities. The widely used arc welding and the emerging arc additive manufacturing routes can be optimised by controlling internal melt flow through adjusting surface active elements.
