RESUMO

A von Hámos spectrometer has been implemented in the vacuum interaction chamber 1 of the High Energy Density instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility. This setup is dedicated, but not necessarily limited, to X-ray spectroscopy measurements of samples exposed to static compression using a diamond anvil cell. Si and Ge analyser crystals with different orientations are available for this setup, covering the hard X-ray energy regime with a sub-eV energy resolution. The setup was commissioned by measuring various emission spectra of free-standing metal foils and oxide samples in the energy range between 6 and 11 keV as well as low momentum-transfer inelastic X-ray scattering from a diamond sample. Its capabilities to study samples at extreme pressures and temperatures have been demonstrated by measuring the electronic spin-state changes of (Fe0.5Mg0.5)O, contained in a diamond anvil cell and pressurized to 100 GPa, via monitoring the Fe Kß fluorescence with a set of four Si(531) analyser crystals at close to melting temperatures. The efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrometer enables valence-to-core emission signals to be studied and single pulse X-ray emission from samples in a diamond anvil cell to be measured, opening new perspectives for spectroscopy in extreme conditions research.

RESUMO

Application of acoustic emission of the sound frequency range is under consideration. This range is of current interest for the diagnostics of the stability of mountain slopes, glaciers, ice covers, large technical constructions (bridges, dams, etc.) as well as for the detection of rock deformation anomalies preceding earthquakes. Acoustic sensors, which can be used to record and to determine the directivity of acoustic emission of the sound frequency range, are under consideration. The structure of the system for acoustic emission recording, processing and analysis is described. This system makes it possible to determine the direction to the acoustic emission source using one multi-component sensor. We also consider the algorithms for detection of acoustic emission pulses in a noisy background, and for the analysis of their structure using the Adaptive Matching Pursuit algorithm. A method for the detection of the direction to an acoustic emission signal source based on multi-component sensors is described. The results of application of sound range acoustic emission for the detection of the intensification of rock deformations, associated with earthquake preparation and development in the seismically active region of Kamchatka peninsula, are presented.

RESUMO

We propose an optoelectronic system for stimulation of living neurons. The system consists of an electronic circuit based on the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, an optical fiber, and a photoelectrical converter. We used this system for electrical stimulation of hippocampal living neurons in acute hippocampal brain slices (350-µm thick) obtained from a 20-28 days old C57BL/6 mouse or a Wistar rat. The main advantage of our system over other similar stimulators is that it contains an optical fiber for signal transmission instead of metallic wires. The fiber is placed between the electronic circuit and stimulated neurons and provides galvanic isolation from external electrical and magnetic fields. The use of the optical fiber allows avoiding electromagnetic noise and current flows which could affect metallic wires. Furthermore, it gives us the possibility to simulate "synaptic plasticity" by adaptive signal transfer through optical fiber. The proposed optoelectronic system (hybrid neural circuit) provides a very high efficiency in stimulating hippocampus neurons and can be used for restoring brain activity in particular regions or replacing brain parts (neuroprosthetics) damaged due to a trauma or neurodegenerative diseases.
