RESUMO

The d and f electrons in correlated metals are often neither fully localized around their host nuclei nor fully itinerant. This localized/itinerant duality underlies the correlated electronic states of the high-Tc cuprate superconductors and the heavy-fermion intermetallics and is nowhere more apparent than in the 5f valence electrons of plutonium. Here, we report the full set of symmetry-resolved elastic moduli of PuCoGa5--the highest Tc superconductor of the heavy fermions (Tc = 18.5 K)--and find that the bulk modulus softens anomalously over a wide range in temperature above Tc. The elastic symmetry channel in which this softening occurs is characteristic of a valence instability--therefore, we identify the elastic softening with fluctuations of the plutonium 5f mixed-valence state. These valence fluctuations disappear when the superconducting gap opens at Tc, suggesting that electrons near the Fermi surface play an essential role in the mixed-valence physics of this system and that PuCoGa5 avoids a valence transition by entering the superconducting state. The lack of magnetism in PuCoGa5 has made it difficult to reconcile with most other heavy-fermion superconductors, where superconductivity is generally believed to be mediated by magnetic fluctuations. Our observations suggest that valence fluctuations play a critical role in the unusually high Tc of PuCoGa5.

The results of (115)In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on PuIn3 are reported. Three of the four NQR lines of (115)In expected for nuclear spin I = 9/2 are observed. The equal spacing of these lines at 20 K yields the NQR frequency of νQ = 10.45 MHz, and the asymmetry parameter of the electric field gradient η = 0. The NQR line profile and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 display an abrupt change at 14 K, which is associated with the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order. The temperature dependences of the staggered magnetization MQ(T), extracted from the NQR spectra, and 1/T1 below TN = 14 K are well explained by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory for spin fluctuations. In addition, the scaling between T1T and MQ(T)/MQ(0) is also consistent with the predictions of SCR theory, providing further evidence that PuIn3 is a weak itinerant antiferromagnet in which spin fluctuations around the antiferromagnetic wavevector play a major role in the system's behavior at finite temperatures.

RESUMO

Uranium and plutonium's 5f electrons are tenuously poised between strongly bonding with ligand spd-states and residing close to the nucleus. The unusual properties of these elements and their compounds (e.g., the six different allotropes of elemental plutonium) are widely believed to depend on the related attributes of f-orbital occupancy and delocalization for which a quantitative measure is lacking. By employing resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and making comparisons to specific heat measurements, we demonstrate the presence of multiconfigurational f-orbital states in the actinide elements U and Pu and in a wide range of uranium and plutonium intermetallic compounds. These results provide a robust experimental basis for a new framework toward understanding the strongly-correlated behavior of actinide materials.

The physical properties of the first In analog of the PuMGa(5) (M = Co, Rh) family of superconductors, PuCoIn(5), are reported. With its unit cell volume being 28% larger than that of PuCoGa(5), the characteristic spin-fluctuation energy scale of PuCoIn(5) is three to four times smaller than that of PuCoGa(5), which suggests that the Pu 5f electrons are in a more localized state relative to PuCoGa(5). This raises the possibility that the high superconducting transition temperature T(c) = 18.5 K of PuCoGa(5) stems from the proximity to a valence instability, while the superconductivity at T(c) = 2.5 K of PuCoIn(5) is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point.

RESUMO

The physical properties including magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity of two new plutonium compounds Pu2M3Si5 (M = Co, Ni) are reported. Pu2Ni3Si5 crystallizes in the orthorhombic U2Co3Si5 structure type, which can be considered a variant of the BaAl4 tetragonal structure, while Pu2Co3Si5 adopts the closely related monoclinic Lu2Co3Si5 type. Magnetic order is observed in both compounds, with Pu2Ni3Si5 ordering ferromagnetically at T(C) = 65 K then undergoing a transition into an antiferromagnetic state below T(N) = 35 K. Two successive magnetic transitions are also observed at T(mag1) = 38 K and T(mag2) = 5 K in Pu2Co3Si5. Specific heat measurements reveal that these two materials have a moderately enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient γ ∼ 100 mJ/mol Pu K(2) in the magnetic state with comparable RKKY and Kondo energy scales.

We have examined the relaxation of photoinduced quasiparticles in the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5. The deduced electron-phonon coupling constant is incompatible with the measured superconducting transition temperature Tc=18.5 K, which speaks against phonon-mediated superconductivity. Upon lowering the temperature, we observe an order-of-magnitude increase of the quasiparticle relaxation time in agreement with the phonon bottleneck scenario--evidence for a hybridization gap in the electronic density of states. The modification of photoinduced reflectance in the superconducting state is consistent with the heavy character of the quasiparticles that participate in Cooper pairing.

RESUMO

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy was used to measure the elastic properties of pure polycrystalline (239)Pu in the gamma-phase. Shear and longitudinal elastic moduli were measured simultaneously and the bulk modulus was computed from them. A smooth, linear, and large decrease in all elastic moduli with increasing temperature was observed. The Poisson ratio was calculated and an increase from 0.242 at 519 K to 0.252 at 571 K was found. These measurements on extremely well-characterized pure Pu are in agreement with other reported results where overlap occurs. We calculated an approximate Debye temperature Theta(D)=144 K. Determined from the temperature variation in the bulk modulus, gamma-Pu shows the same Gruneisen parameter as copper.

We report results of 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a single crystal of superconducting PuCoGa5 in its normal state. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates and the Knight shifts as a function of temperature reveal an anisotropy of spin fluctuations with finite wave vector q. By comparison with the isostructural members, we conclude that antiferromagnetic XY-type anisotropy of spin fluctuations plays an important role in mediating superconductivity in these heavy fermion materials.

RESUMO

alpha-plutonium's volume-corrected polycrystal elastic moduli were measured between 18 K and the upper limit of its occurrence, near 400 K. The two independent moduli for a polycrystal-bulk and shear-behave smoothly, indicating no phase transition. Both moduli show the same 50% increase on cooling, an order of magnitude larger than in other metals. The Debye temperature obtained from low-temperature elastic moduli, 207 K, significantly exceeds most previous estimates. The Gruneisen parameter gamma=5.3, obtained from the temperature dependence of the bulk modulus, is intermediate among previous estimates using other approaches, alpha-plutonium's Poisson ratio nu is low: 0.18, nearly temperature independent, and its small decrease on warming opposes usual behavior. The high gamma, large but equal bulk modulus and shear modulus fractional stiffening on cooling, and near-temperature-invariant nu are attributed to a single mechanism: 5-f electron localization-delocalization.

Gender constancy judgments in children referred for problems in their gender identity development (N = 206) and controls (N = 95) were compared. On Slaby and Frey's (1975) gender constancy interview, the gender-referred children performed more poorly than the controls at three stage levels: gender identity, gender stability, and gender consistency. On the Boy-Girl Identity Task, a second measure of gender constancy (Emmerich et al., 1977), the gender-referred children also performed more poorly. Gender-referred children who had not attained gender consistency engaged in significantly less same-sex-typed play on a free-play task than the gender-referred children who had, but there were no gender consistency effects for the controls. Two other measures of sex-typed behavior were unrelated to gender consistency. In the gender-referred group alone, children who "failed" the gender identity or gender stability stages were more likely to draw an opposite-sex person first on the Draw-a-Person test and to evince more affective gender confusion on the Gender Identity Interview (Zucker et al., 1993) than children who had "passed." It is concluded that children referred for problems in their gender identity development have a developmental lag in gender constancy acquisition. Possible reasons for the lag are discussed.

RESUMO

A 12-item gender identity interview schedule was administered to 85 children referred for concerns regarding their gender identity development and 98 clinical and normal control children. Factor analysis identified two factors, which were labeled Affective Gender Confusion and Cognitive Gender Confusion. The gender-referred group gave significantly more deviant responses than did the controls on both factors. Results were discussed with regard to several diagnostic and assessment issues pertaining to children with gender identity disorder.

Increasing our awareness of patients' lifestyle preferences, as well as developing more productive ways to interact with them, can promote growth along with recovery. The very least it can do is to facilitate working with patients and reduce the negative impact of stress of conflict in a very demanding profession.

Fifty-one volunteer patients participated in a study to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture as an analgesic for operative dentistry. For the twenty-six patients randomly assigned to an acupuncture group, needles were inserted through specially designed holders into the Ho-Ku points, located between the first and second metacarpals. An acupuncture pulse generator provided electrical current. For the twenty-five patients in a placebo group, the identical needle and holder arrangement was used. When inserted, however, the needles became embedded in plastic on the undersurface of the holders and did not touch the skin of the patient or receive any electrical stimulation. The patients and dentists were blind to this procedural variation. Analysis of ratings and responses indicated no differences in findings for the acupuncture and placebo procedures, with both having 100% success and high levels of patient acceptance. Since there was no electric current or penetration of the skin in the placebo group, the findings suggest that the successful use of acupuncture for restorative dentistry may be due to psychological and/or placebo effects in combination with a possible diminished need for analgesia because of the modern use of the high-speed drill.
