RESUMO

Islam gives legal precedence to purity of lineage and known parenthood of all children. In Islam treatment to infertility using IVF is permitted within validity of marriage contract with no genes mixing. The paper shows that the Qur'an, the word of Allah, and science, the deeds of Allah are not in major conflicts in defining the start of human life. The Holy Qur'an provides an elegant description of origin, developmental stages of intra-uterine life. The Hadith explains two positions one that believes human embryo get ensouled at conception and the other after 40 days of conception. The paper aims to find that Islam confers moral respect to human embryo, but it also clarifies the absence of full human rights to a developing foetus. In Islam, human embryonic use is probably permissible for therapeutic and reproductive purpose keeping intact the principles of Shari'ah.

RESUMO

The development of nanomaterial-based hybrid systems for healthcare and energy-related materials has attracted significant attention nowadays. Here, we have designed a nanocomposite of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with anticancer therapeutic drug 9-aminoacridine hydrochloride hydrate (9AA-HCl) for antibacterial and photocatalytic activities. Spectroscopic studies reveal that the photoinduced electron transfer from photoexcited 9AA-HCl to the conduction band of ZnO NP causes the generation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is responsible for antibacterial activity and photocatalytic properties. It is seen that the efficiency of photodegradation of dye molecules increases in ZnO-9AA-HCl nanoconjugated systems than pure ZnO nanoparticles because of efficient charge separation. In addition, the antibacterial efficacy of the nanoconjugate is investigated using a strain of Gram-negative bacteria where the cell-killing activities are observed 99.99 and 100% for 20 and 21 µL/mL nanoconjugate, respectively, and very little cell-killing activity is observed for free ZnO NPs and free drug. Moreover, it is also observed that the nanoconjugate generates sufficient intracellular ROS that can hydrolyze 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluoresceindiacetate (DCFH-DA) to highly fluorescent 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein (DCF). The outcome of the study will provide valuable information for designing new-edge nanoconjugate materials for potential applications in photocatalytic and antibacterial activities.

RESUMO

The recent spectacular progress in assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) has resulted in new ethical dilemmas. Though women occupy a central role in the reproductive process, within the ART paradigm, the importance accorded to the embryo commonly surpasses that given to the mother. This commentary questions the increasing tendency to position the embryonic subject in an antagonistic relation with the mother. I examine how the mother's reproductive autonomy is compromised in relation to that of her embryo and argue in favour of doing away with the subject-object dyad between them, particularly in the contexts of surrogacy and abortion. I also engage with the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016. A critical discussion of the privacy judgment passed by the Supreme Court of India helps examine how personal autonomy of the body and mind extends to include the reproductive autonomy of women as well.

RESUMO

The study was carried out to determine the role of plasma fibrinogen in diagnosis of neonatal sepsis and to evaluate its role in predicting short term outcome. Sixty five neonates with clinical features suggestive of neonatal sepsis were included in this study. Seventy five neonates served as the control group. Plasma fibrinogen, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and platelet counts were performed in all the neonates. Cut-off value of plasma fibrinogen for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis was determined with the help of receiver operating characteristic curve. Plasma fibrinogen level was found to be significantly higher among neonates with sepsis when compared to neonates in control group (p < 0.0001). It had sensitivity of 70.8 %, specificity of 82.7 %, positive predictive value (PPV) of 72.3 % and negative predictive value (NPV) of 81.6 % for diagnosis of neonatal sepsis at cut-off value of 301.90 mg/dL. When neonates with septic shock and/or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) were excluded from study population, sensitivity and NPV rose to 91.9 % and 95.4 % at the same cut-off value while specificity and PPV remained the same. Lower level of plasma fibrinogen was detected in neonates with septic shock and/or DIC (p < 0.0001) and in neonates who died (p < 0.0001). Hence plasma fibrinogen can serve as an effective tool in diagnostic work up of neonatal sepsis as well as in assessing development of complications and outcome.

RESUMO

The development of light harvesting systems based on heterostructures for efficient conversion of solar energy to renewable energy is an emerging area of research. Here, we have designed heterostructures by using carbon dots (C-dots) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) to develop an efficient light harvesting system. Interestingly, the conduction band and the valence band positions of ZnO NP are lower than the LUMO and HOMO positions of C-dots in this type II heterostructure of C dot-ZnO NP, which causes efficient charge separation and photocurrent generation. Steady state and time resolved spectroscopic studies reveal that an efficient photoinduced electron transfer occurs from C dots to ZnO NP and a simultaneous hole transfer occurs from the valence band of ZnO NP to the HOMO of C dots. The calculated rate of electron transfer is found to be 3.7 × 109 s-1 and the rate of hole transfer is found to be 3.6 × 107 s-1. The enhancement of photocurrent (11 fold) under solar light irradiation of the C dot-ZnO NP heterostructure opens up new possibilities to design efficient light harvesting systems.

RESUMO

Hamartomas are disorganized but benign masses composed of cells indigenous to the involved site. They have been reported in almost all organs but are rare in the head and neck region, especially the pharynx. We describe the case of a six-month-old male infant who presented with acute respiratory symptoms due to a pedunculated polypoid mass arising from his left palatine tonsil. He underwent a tonsillectomy and removal of the polyp after initial stabilization. Histopathological examination showed features consistent with hamartoma. The child had an uneventful recovery and follow-up after one year showed no evidence of recurrence. Our case highlights that rare benign lesions like hamartoma originating in the oral cavity, even in infants, can have such an acute presentation and should be considered in differential diagnosis.

RESUMO

Most hypersensitivity reactions to insect stings are immediate, ranging from transient local reactions of little medical consequence to fatal anaphylaxis. Rarely, some patients have delayed reactions after a period of apparent normality which manifest as systemic features which can be life-threatening. A 3-year-old boy was attacked by a swarm of bees, estimated to be about 200 in number. There was an immediate cutaneous reaction which was treated at a local hospital. After 9 days, he presented with oliguria, dark-coloured urine, pedal oedema, hypertension and acute kidney injury (AKI). He was managed conservatively with fluid restriction, control of blood pressure and peritoneal dialysis, and renal function returned to normal gradually over the following 9 days. The delayed-onset AKI and other laboratory abnormalities suggested a immune-mediated type III hypersensitivity reaction leading to renal insufficiency. After improvement of initial hypersensitivity reactions, patients with bee stings should be followed up in order to detect any late-onset complications which might be life-threatening.

RESUMO

Adsorption of acridine derivatives viz. 9-aminoacridine hydrochloride hydrate (9AA-HCl), acridine yellow (AY), acridine orange (AO), and proflavine (Pro) on citrate stabilized gold nanoparticle surface were studied using different analytical techniques like UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The amine moiety of acridine derivative binds strongly to the gold nanoparticles as confirmed by spectroscopic studies. The plasmon band observed for the wine red colloidal gold at 525 nm in the UV-vis spectrum is characteristic of gold nanoparticles. However, with the addition of acridine derivatives the intensity of the absorption band at 525 nm decreases and a new peak emerges at red-end region - a signature of formation of gold-drug complex. The TEM images show the average size of citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles as 15-20 nm, which becomes larger in the presence of various drugs due to aggregation. From the thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) we have measured the number of drug molecules attached per gold nanoparticle (AuNP). These gold nanoparticles are very important as drug delivery vehicles and for clinical applications it is necessary to understand their activity in vivo. The antibacterial efficacy of drugs coated gold nanoparticles were studied against various strains of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Among the four drugs, 9AA-HCl and AO showed antibacterial activity and for both of them the AuNP conjugated drug showed better antibacterial efficacy than the bare drug. Because of the high penetrating power and large surface area of Au(0), a single gold nanoparticle can adsorb multiple drug molecules, hence this total entity acts as a single group against the bacteria.

RESUMO

Spectroscopic and crystallographic studies reveal that Merocyanine 540 (MC 540), a well-known therapeutically important anionic cyanine dye, interacts with hen egg white lysozyme in ground state. The formation of the complex is validated by two isosbestic points in absorption spectra of lysozyme with varied concentration of MC 540 and appearance of an isodichroic point in induced CD spectra of MC 540 with lysozyme. The blue shift of fluorescence maximum of lysozyme in presence of MC 540 shows hydrophobic effect on Trp due to complex formation probably through cooperative binding. Above 1:3M stoichiometric ratio (lysozyme:MC 540) an additional fluorescence hump arises because of structural changes in protein, where MC 540 acts as self-denaturant, inducing non-linearity in Stern-Volmer plot. The van't Hoff isotherms with negative changes in enthalpy at lower concentration and positive changes in entropy for entire concentration range of MC 540 depict the binding forces as hydrogen bonding/van der Waal's and ionic/hydrophobic respectively. Finally X-ray crystallographic structure of the complex shows that MC 540 adopts two conformations, cis and trans, while it binds to lysozyme. Benzoxole moiety of MC 540 interacts with Trp123 through π-stacking and SO3(2-) group is stabilized by ionic interaction/H-bonding with Arg125 of lysozyme.

RESUMO

We aim to find out the extent of stability of the excimer of 9-aminoacridine hydrochloride hydrate (9AA), a prospective PDT drug, in different confined media with varying cavity size. When confined in cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide micelles, although at low concentration of 9AA, only a single distinct peak (λ(max) at 460 nm) with a shoulder at 485 nm is observed in steady-state fluorescence spectrum, yet with increase in concentration the peak and the shoulder merge with simultaneous emergence of another peak at 535 nm, which is assigned to excimer. Similar behavior is also observed in Triton-X, crown ether, α-cyclodextrin, ß-cyclodextrin, and homogeneous aqueous medium. The formation of excimer, which reflects the extent of confinement of 9AA, is maximum in ß-cyclodextrin followed by others. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies along with TRES and TRANES analyses coupled with anisotropy data and transient absorption studies reveal the presence of monomer-dimer equilibrium of 9AA in the excited state. Molecular modeling indicates that the structure of excimer is stabilized by locking of the two monomeric species via four hydrogen bonds formed between the amino-H and imino-N of 9AA monomers, whereas the dimer in the ground state has only two such hydrogen bonds.

RESUMO

Generalized pigmentation in a child may be seen in a variety of disorders which can be clinically differentiated. Accuracy of diagnosis can be increased by classifications based on both clinical and histological findings. The authors report a case of siblings in whom hyperpigmentation started at age of about 6 mo and was progressing. Histology of skin revealed shortening and blunting of rete ridges with presence of melanocytes in stratum basal layer. This is a rare type of hypermelanosis and termed as universal acquired melanosis or carbon baby syndrome. This is a rare presentation and first case report in siblings.
