RESUMO

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxicity effects of Satureja hortensis (S. hortensis) essential oil (EO). The GC-MS analysis of S. hortensis EO (SEO) has identified seven compounds, representing 96.84% of the oil. The two main constituents of the oil were; carvacrol (48.51%) and γ-terpinene (36.63%). The total phenolics and flavonoids contents of SEO were 199.1 ± 0.5 µg GAE/mg (GAE-gallic acid equivalent) and 161.5 ± 0.9 µg CE/mg (CE-catechin equivalent), respectively. SEO showed superior antioxidant potential (ABTS, 1038.66 and DPPH, 12.679 mg Trolox/g), and exhibited antibacterial activity against five food born bacterial strains, exerting the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 2 to 4 mg/mL. On the other hand, using of SEO at inhibiting concentrations for pathogenic bacteria can affect the beneficial bacteria negatively. Moreover, SEO showed toxicity on normal cells (WI-38, THLE2, and phoenx-eco) and consequently, it is worthwhile for extensive toxicity studies in normal cells and animal models. As our-knowledge, this is the first study on antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxicity of Egyptian S. hortensis.

RESUMO

The study was implemented in Sharkia Governorate, to determine the magnitude of schistosomiasis in urban areas. A multistage sampling technique was the method chosen to carry out the study. According to the population size, the urban areas of Sharkia Governorate were classified into two strata: small sized cities and large sized cities. Two cities were selected randomly from each stratum. Among the 5012 individuals selected from the four cities, 3524 and 3457 individuals gave urine and stool specimens respectively. An overall prevalence of 6.8% was observed for Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) infection with a geometric mean egg count (GMEC) of 45.8 eggs per gram stool. Only three cases of Schistosoma haematobium were detected. Results of the survey suggest that small sized cities had a significantly higher level of infection than large sized cities. Age and sex related prevalence and intensities showed that the highest rates were noticed among adult males.

RESUMO

Twenty cases of thalassemia major and 20 children with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency were studied for the protein content of their red cell membrane as well as for its fractions, compared to 20 normal controls. The results showed that the total membrane proteins per red cell and the various fraction percentages in both conditions were not significantly different from normal controls. Also the acrylamide gel electrophoretic studies of the red cell membrane proteins gave band patterns identical with those of normal controls. These results are discussed.

RESUMO

beta-Glucuronidase activity is elevated in the urine of patients with bilharziasis hematobium. In the present study the enzyme level was estimated in whole urinary bladder tissue homogenates of mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni. In the infected mice the enzyme activity is significantly higher than in the controls. The effect of the schistosomicidal drug hycanthone was also evaluated. Treatment with the drug did not affect the level of the enzyme activity in the infected mice; it induced an increase in the enzyme activity of the controls.
