High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) has been increasingly used to assess the trabecular bone structure. High susceptibility at the marrow/bone interface may significantly reduce the marrow's apparent transverse relaxation time (T2*), overestimating trabecular bone thickness. Ultrashort echo time MRI (UTE-MRI) can minimize the signal loss caused by susceptibility-induced T2* shortening. However, UTE-MRI is sensitive to chemical shift artifacts, which manifest as spatial blurring and ringing artifacts partially due to non-Cartesian sampling. In this study, we proposed UTE-MRI at the resonance frequency of fat to minimize marrow-related chemical shift artifacts and the overestimation of trabecular thickness. Cubes of trabecular bone from six donors (75 ± 4 years old) were scanned using a 3 T clinical scanner at the resonance frequencies of fat and water, respectively, using 3D UTE sequences with five TEs (0.032, 1.1, 2.2, 3.3, and 4.4 ms) and a clinical 3D gradient echo (GRE) sequence at 0.2 × 0.2 × 0.4 mm3 voxel size. Trabecular bone thickness was measured in 30 regions of interest (ROIs) per sample. MRI results were compared with thicknesses obtained from micro-computed tomography (µCT) at 50 µm3 voxel size. Linear regression models were used to calculate the coefficient of determination between MRI- and µCT-based trabecular thickness. All MRI-based trabecular thicknesses showed significant correlations with µCT measurements. The correlations were higher (examined with paired Student's t-test, P < 0.01) for 3D UTE images performed at the fat frequency (R2 = 0.59-0.74, P < 0.01) than those at the water frequency (R2 = 0.18-0.52, P < 0.01) and clinical GRE images (R2 = 0.39-0.47, P < 0.01). Significantly reduced correlations were observed with longer TEs. This study highlighted the feasibility of UTE-MRI at the fat frequency for a more accurate assessment of trabecular bone thickness.

Background and Aims: Electrocardiography (ECG) is a widely accessible, noninvasive, and cost-effective diagnostic instrument used to evaluate patients with suspected heart failure (HF). The aim of this study is to investigate electrocardiographic changes in patients with different stages of HF in a random population of Yazd city. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study included 319 individuals, randomly selected, aged 40 years and more, registered in the Yazd Health Study was conducted from March 2022 to May 2023 at Afshar Hospitals. In accordance with the AHA/ACC guidelines, HF was classified into four stages (A, B, C, and D). Results: The 159 individuals were classified in the stage 0 group, 77 were in Stage A, 65 were in Stage B, and 18 were in Stage C of HF. In the Stage 0, the PR interval (PRi) was 130.5 ± 18.1 ms, while in Stage C, it was 143.3 ± 21.9 ms, with a significant difference (p = 0.047). Similarly, the QRS interval (QRSi) increased with HF staging (p = 0.001). The frequency of diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), hyperlipidemia (HLP), chronic heart disease, alcoholism, and PRi, QRSi, QT interval levels were independent predictors of HF stage in multivariate regression analysis. Conclusion: The prevalence of HF stages, as classified by the AHA/ACC guidelines, was observed, with significant correlations between ECG parameters and HF progression. abnormal rhythms, left bundle branch block, ischemia, hypertrophy, and left atrial enlargement increased with higher HF stages. Major risk factors like DM and HTN exhibited a heightened prevalence in advanced HF stages, accentuating their pivotal role in the progression of HF.

The aim of this study was the identification of luteolin in Prosopis farcta extract (PFE) and melatonin to evaluate its effect on THC withdrawal syndrome in mice. Luteolin was identified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPCL). Signs of toxicity of mice in PFE and luteolin were monitored for LD50 calculation. The behavioral symptoms of THC withdrawal (stereotypies, ambulation, and inactivity time) induced by the rimonabant challenge were illustrated in THC-dependent mice receiving PFE, luteolin, and melatonin. The expression of mature BDNF (mBDNF) was evaluated by Western blot analysis. The dopamine concentrations were measured using HPLC. PFE and luteolin LD50 were 650 and 220 mg/kg, respectively. PFE (300 mg/kg), all doses of luteolin, and melatonin increased significantly the mBDNF expression and decreased the dopamine concentration. The findings suggest that PFE, luteolin, and melatonin are mighty in reducing the signs of THC withdrawal. It seems these effects were due to a decrease in dopamine concentration level and an increase in mBDNF protein expression in mice brains.

Background: Myelin water imaging (MWI) is a myelin-specific technique, which has great potential for the assessment of demyelination and remyelination. This study develops a new MWI method, which employs a short repetition time adiabatic inversion recovery (STAIR) technique in combination with a commonly used fast spin echo (FSE) sequence and provides quantification of myelin water (MW) fractions. Method: Whole-brain MWI was performed using the short repetition time adiabatic inversion recovery prepared-fast spin echo (STAIR-FSE) technique on eight healthy volunteers (mean age: 38±14 years, four-males) and seven patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) (mean age: 53.7±8.7 years, two-males) on a 3T clinical magnetic resonance imaging scanner. To facilitate the quantification of apparent myelin water fraction (aMWF), a proton density-weighted FSE was also used during the scans to allow total water imaging. The aMWF measurements of MS lesions and normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) regions in MS patients were compared with those measured in normal white matter (NWM) regions in healthy volunteers. Both the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and paired comparison were performed for the comparison. Results: The MW in the whole-brain was selectively imaged and quantified using the STAIR-FSE technique in all participants. MS lesions showed much lower signal intensities than NAWM in the STAIR-FSE images. ANOVA analysis revealed a significant difference in the aMWF measurements between the three groups. Moreover, the aMWF measurements in MS lesions were significantly lower than those in both NWM of healthy volunteers and NAWM of MS patients. Lower aMWF measurements in NAWM were also found in comparison with those in NWM. Conclusions: The STAIR-FSE technique is capable of measuring aMWF values for the indirect detection of myelin loss in MS, thus facilitating clinical translation of whole brain MWI and quantification, which show great potential for the detection and evaluation of changes in myelin in the brain of patients with MS for future larger cohort studies.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of ultrashort echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques (T1 and magnetization transfer [MT] modeling) for imaging of the Achilles tendons and entheses in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) compared with asymptomatic volunteers. The heels of twenty-six PsA patients (age 59 ± 15 years, 41% female) and twenty-seven asymptomatic volunteers (age 33 ± 11 years, 47% female) were scanned in the sagittal plane with UTE-T1 and UTE-MT modeling sequences on a 3-T clinical scanner. UTE-T1 and macromolecular proton fraction (MMF; the main outcome of MT modeling) were calculated in the tensile portions of the Achilles tendon and at the enthesis (close to the calcaneus bone). Mann-Whitney-U tests were used to examine statistically significant differences between the two cohorts. UTE-T1 in the entheses was significantly higher for the PsA group compared with the asymptomatic group (967 ± 145 vs. 872 ± 133 ms, p < 0.01). UTE-T1 in the tendons was also significantly higher for the PsA group (950 ± 145 vs. 850 ± 138 ms, p < 0.01). MMF in the entheses was significantly lower in the PsA group compared with the asymptomatic group (15% ± 3% vs. 18% ± 3%, p < 0.01). MMF in the tendons was also significantly lower in the PsA group compared with the asymptomatic group (17% ± 4% vs. 20% ± 5%, p < 0.01). Percentage differences in MMF between the asymptomatic and PsA groups (-16.6% and -15.0% for the enthesis and tendon, respectively) were higher than the T1 differences (10.8% and 11.7% for the enthesis and tendon, respectively). The results suggest higher T1 and lower MMF in the Achilles tendons and entheses in PsA patients compared with the asymptomatic group. This study highlights the potential of UTE-T1 and UTE-MT modeling for quantitative evaluation of entheses and tendons in PsA patients.

Assisted reproductive technologies are key to solving the problems of aging and organ defects. Collagen is compatible with living tissues and has many different chemical properties; it has great potential for use in reproductive medicine and the engineering of reproductive tissues. It is a natural substance that has been used a lot in science and medicine. Collagen is a substance that can be obtained from many different animals. It can be made naturally or created using scientific methods. Using pure collagen has some drawbacks regarding its physical and chemical characteristics. Because of this, when collagen is processed in various ways, it can better meet the specific needs as a material for repairing tissues. In simpler terms, collagen can be used to help regenerate bones, cartilage, and skin. It can also be used in cardiovascular repair and other areas. There are different ways to process collagen, such as cross-linking it, making it more structured, adding minerals to it, or using it as a carrier for other substances. All of these methods help advance the field of tissue engineering. This review summarizes and discusses the current progress of collagen-based materials for reproductive medicine.

Brain oxidative damage and neurodegeneration by ethanol (ETH) are considered as important factors that triggered by oxidative stress. Recently, the abuse of diazepam (DZM) has increased by alcoholism-addicted patients. The present study evaluated the effects of combination treatment of ETH with DZM on oxidative damage induced in brain mitochondria of the mice. Only ETH (0.3, 0.6, and 2.5 g / kg) and ETH+ DZM (2.5 mg / kg) were administered intraperitoneally (ip) to the mice. Pathological changes and oxidative stress biomarkers including ROS, lipid peroxidation, carbonyl protein, mitochondrial function, and glutathione content were evaluated in brain mitochondria after 42 days. Results indicated that co-treatment of DZM and ETH significantly reduced mitochondrial toxicity, oxidative damage, pathological changes and increased level of glutathione. Subchronic ETH administration induced brain oxidative damage, mitochondrial disruption, and serious damage to the brain cells. Whereas, combination treatment improved oxidative damage, mitochondrial function, and pathological changes in brain cells after intoxication by ETH. These findings suggest antioxidant effect of DZM in combination with ETH and can be considered in reducing oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage attenuation in the brain. Combination therapy may be a better therapeutic candidate for prevention of brain oxidative damage induced by ETH.

Introduction: Numerous techniques for myelin water imaging (MWI) have been devised to specifically assess alterations in myelin. The biomarker employed to measure changes in myelin content is known as the myelin water fraction (MWF). The short TR adiabatic inversion recovery (STAIR) sequence has recently been identified as a highly effective method for calculating MWF. The purpose of this study is to develop a new clinical transitional myelin water imaging (MWI) technique that combines STAIR preparation and echo-planar imaging (EPI) (STAIR-EPI) sequence for data acquisition. Methods: Myelin water (MW) in the brain has shorter T1 and T2 relaxation times than intracellular and extracellular water. In the proposed STAIR-EPI sequence, a short TR (e.g., ≤300 ms) together with an optimized inversion time enable robust long T1 water suppression with a wide range of T1 values [i.e., (600, 2,000) ms]. The EPI allows fast data acquisition of the remaining MW signals. Seven healthy volunteers and seven patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) were recruited and scanned in this study. The apparent myelin water fraction (aMWF), defined as the signal ratio of MW to total water, was measured in the lesions and normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) in MS patients and compared with those measured in the normal white matter (NWM) in healthy volunteers. Results: As seen in the STAIR-EPI images acquired from MS patients, the MS lesions show lower signal intensities than NAWM do. The aMWF measurements for both MS lesions (3.6 ± 1.3%) and NAWM (8.6 ± 1.2%) in MS patients are significantly lower than NWM (10 ± 1.3%) in healthy volunteers (P < 0.001). Discussion: The proposed STAIR-EPI technique, which can be implemented in MRI scanners from all vendors, is able to detect myelin loss in both MS lesions and NAWM in MS patients.

Background: Horizontal ridge augmentation surgeries are common procedures in periodontics. Histological changes in soft tissues affect the success of surgery in many ways. Autologous conditioned serum (ACS) increases interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) and causes inflammation modulation. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of ACS on histological changes and gene expression of soft tissues after horizontal ridge augmentation surgeries. Methods: This double-blind split-mouth clinical trial was performed on patients needing implants with horizontal ridge augmentation (n=21). The control and intervention groups were considered split-mouth in two areas of the patients' oral soft tissues. A collagen membrane impregnated with ACS was used on the test side, and only a collagen membrane was used on the control side. After four months, histological changes in soft tissues, such as the amount of connective tissue collagen, fibroblast and inflammatory cell counts, and expression of the IL-1ß gene, were evaluated. Results: The fibroblast counts in the ACS group were significantly higher than in the control group. In addition, ACS caused a significant increase in the amount of collagen in the soft tissues compared to the control group (P<0.01). However, the number of inflammatory cells was similar in the two groups (P>0.05). IL-1ß gene expression was not significantly different between the case and control groups. Conclusion: Under the limitations of the present study and based on the results of histological examinations, ACS increased the number of fibroblasts and the amount of collagen in soft tissues without affecting inflammatory cells (P=0.562).

Since ancient times, people around the world have used natural cosmetics to improve or change the appearance of their nails, skin, and hair. Henna is a plant-based dye that has been used over the centuries for medical and cosmetic purposes. The present work was aimed to investigate the presence of lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) in various types of commonly consumed henna samples in Iran. A total of thirty-nine henna samples from both local and imported products (3 colors in 13 brands) were randomly collected from popular and herbal medicine markets. The atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) technique was used for the analysis of the samples. The amount of Pb and As in 100% samples was higher than the calculated limit of quantitation (LOQ). The concentrations of Pb and As in the samples were at the ranges of 9.56-16.94 µg/g and 0.25-1.12 µg/g, respectively. The mean level of Pb was higher in black and red products, compared with the green henna. The levels of Pb and As in 53.85% and 7.7% of the henna samples exceeded the permissible limits recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), respectively. In addition, the mean levels of Pb and As contamination in the imported samples were significantly higher, in comparison to the local henna samples. To our knowledge, this is the first study assessing Pb and As contamination in the henna samples consumed in Iran. Our study demonstrated that there is a potential risk of exposure to Pb through henna in the Iranian consumers.

Wound healing remains a significant challenge worldwide, necessitating the development of new wound dressings to aid in the healing process. This study presents a novel photothermally active hydrogel that contains platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for infected wound healing. The hydrogel was formed in a one pot synthesis approach by mixing alginate (Alg), gelatin (GT), polydopamine (PDA), and PRP, followed by the addition of CaCl2 as a cross-linker to prepare a multifunctional hydrogel (AGC-PRP-PDA). The hydrogel exhibited improved strength and good swelling properties. PDA nanoparticles (NPs) within the hydrogel endowed them with high photothermal properties and excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Moreover, the hydrogels sustained the release of growth factors due to their ability to protect PRP. The hydrogels also exhibited good hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility, as well as high hemostatic properties. In animal experiments, the injectable hydrogels effectively filled irregular wounds and promoted infected wound healing by accelerating re-epithelialization, facilitating collagen deposition, and enhancing angiogenesis. The study also indicated that near-infrared light improved the healing process. Overall, these hydrogels with antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostatic properties, as well as sustained growth factor release, show significant potential for skin regeneration in full-thickness, bacteria-infected wounds.

Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is used as one of the main protective factors against various pathological processes, as it regulates cells resistant to oxidation. Several studies have extensively explored the relationship between environmental exposure to heavy metals, particularly lead (Pb), and the development of various human diseases. These metals have been reported to be able to, directly and indirectly, induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cause oxidative stress in various organs. Since Nrf2 signaling is important in maintaining redox status, it has a dual role depending on the specific biological context. On the one hand, Nrf2 provides a protective mechanism against metal-induced toxicity; on the other hand, it can induce metal-induced carcinogenesis upon prolonged exposure and activation. Therefore, the aim of this review was to summarize the latest knowledge on the functional interrelation between toxic metals, such as Pb and Nrf2 signaling.

Acute organophosphate pesticide poisoning causes considerable worldwide mortality and morbidity. In this study, serine was attached to the polyethylene glycol-bisaldehyde (PEG) as a novel antidote for diazinon (DZ) poisoning. Serine and PEG were conjugated with a reductive amination reaction. PEG-serine NPs (PEG-NPs) were purified and their structure was analyzed by 1H NMR, 13 C NMR, IR, and particle size was determined via dynamic light scattering. In vitro studies, including hemolysis assay and cytotoxicity on SK-BR-3 and HFFF2 cell lines, were performed. In vivo studies of PEG-NPs were evaluated on DZ-exposed mice. PEG-NPs were administered (i.p.) 20 min after a single dose of DZ (LD50; 166 mg/kg). Atropine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) with pralidoxime (20 mg/kg, i.p.) was used as the standard therapy compared to PEG-NPs. NMR and IR data confirmed that the conjugation of PEG to serine occurred successfully. The average NP size was 22.1 ± 1.8 nm. The hemolysis of the PEG-NPs was calculated at 0.867%, 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was calculated 36 ± 4.5, and 41 ± 3.4 mg/mL on SK-BR-3 and HFFF2 cell lines, respectively. Percentage of surviving significantly improved by 12.5, 25, and 25% through the usage of PEG-NPs at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, respectively, when compared with the DZ group. Cholinesterase enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation, and mitochondrial function significantly improved through PEG-NPs when compared with the DZ group. PEG conjugated serine is very biocompatible with low toxicity and can reduce the acute toxicity of DZ as a new combination therapy.

Introduction: Coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including sudden cardiac death, especially in young people. A different prevalence has been reported based on the USED diagnostic modality. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and type of these anomalies using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Methods: This single-center retrospective study was performed on 3016 consecutive cases who underwent CCTA for cardiac symptoms from March 2015 to August 2020 and the prevalence and types of CAAs were evaluated. Results: 38 cases (overall prevalence of 1.26%) including 21 men (55.3%) and 17 women (44.7%) were retrospectively diagnosed with CAAs. The most common anomalies were the Anomalous origin of LCX from the right coronary sinus (11 cases, 28.9%), Anomalous origin of RCA from the left coronary sinus (11 cases, 28.9%), and Anomalous origin of LM from the right coronary sinus (6 cases, 15.8%). There was no difference in the prevalence of CAAs in terms of patient's gender (P value=0.16) and age (P value=0.61). Conclusion: The prevalence of CAAs among patients who underwent CCTA was 1.26%. The most common anomalies observed were the anomalous origin of the LCX arising from the right coronary sinus, the anomalous origin of the RCA arising from the left coronary sinus, and the anomalous origin of the LM arising from the right coronary sinus. These findings emphasize the importance of CCTA in detecting and characterizing coronary artery anomalies, which may have clinical implications for patient management and treatment decisions.

We investigate the effect of localization on the local charging of quantum batteries (QBs) modeled by disordered spin systems. Two distinct schemes based on the transverse-field random Ising model are considered, with Ising couplings defined on a Chimera graph and on a linear chain with up to next-to-nearest-neighbor interactions. By adopting a low-energy demanding charging process driven by local fields only, we obtain that the maximum extractable energy by unitary processes (ergotropy) is highly enhanced in the ergodic phase in comparison with the many-body localization (MBL) scenario. As we turn off the next-to-nearest-neighbor interactions in the Ising chain, we have the onset of the Anderson localization phase. We then show that the Anderson phase exhibits a hybrid behavior, interpolating between large and small ergotropy as the disorder strength is increased. We also consider the splitting of total ergotropy into its coherent and incoherent contributions. This incoherent part implies in a residual ergotropy that is fully robust against dephasing, which is a typical process leading to the self-discharging of the battery in a real setup. Our results are experimentally feasible in scalable systems, such as in superconducting integrated circuits.

Background. After periodontal surgery, in most cases, the surgical area is covered with a surgical pack. It has been suggested that these packs might minimize complications. This study aimed to compare the effects of Diplen LX membrane and Coe-Pak on pain, wound healing, and patient preference after a periodontal flap surgery in patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis. Methods. In this randomized clinical trial, 26 patients were evaluated. Pain scores were assessed using visual analog scale (VAS) on the 3rd and 7th days postoperatively and compared between the two dressings. On the 7th and 14th days after both flap surgeries, surgical site healing was evaluated using the wound healing index (WHI). Results. The mean age of the patients was 31. It was observed that the severity of pain in the studied patients on the 3rd and 7th days postoperatively was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group. It was also observed that the value of WHI in the studied patients on the 7th and 14th days postoperatively was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group. Conclusion. The pain was less severe in both groups using periodontal dressing and also lower in the Diplen LX membrane group. In addition, based on WHI, wound healing score in patients was also higher and more favorable in the Diplex LX membrane group. Due to the above factors, the majority of patients preferred the use of the Diplen LX membrane.

Sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) is an inorganic sodium salt, a bleaching agent that has a reducing agent role and is generally used as food additive or preservative in the production of diverse foods and beverages. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of Na2S2O4 on cardiac mitochondria damage and biochemical parameters in male mice. Na2S2O4 were administered orally at doses of 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg/kg to male mice for 45 days. Heart mitochondria were isolated for the evaluation of oxidative stress biomarkers such as mitochondrial function, reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation (LPO), protein carbonyl (PC) content, catalase activity (CAT) and glutathione content (GSH). Blood samples were collected and Creatine phosphokinase (CPK), Creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and Troponin I were quantified in the serum. Mitochondrial function was significantly (P < 0.001) decreased and oxidative stress biomarkers including, ROS, LPO and PC were significantly enhanced. Also, CAT activity and GSH content were significantly decreased by Na2S2O4-treated groups in heart mitochondria when compared to the control group. Na2S2O4 administration elevated the serum levels of CPK, CK-MB, and troponin I (especially, at high doses) compared with the control group. These findings suggest that Na2S2O4 induces mitochondria toxicity and cardiac damage especially at high doses with a dose-dependent manner.

Background: This clinical trial evaluated the effect of coenzyme Q10 supplementation along with scaling and root planing (SRP) on periodontal and gingival indices in controlled diabetic patients. Methods: Forty-two diabetic patients (controlled type), referred to the Department of Periodontics with chronic periodontitis and eligible for the study, were included in the study. Patients suffering from chronic periodontitis with a probing pocket depth of ≥5 mm in different quadrants of the oral cavity with radiographic evidence of bone loss were included in the present randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The subjects were instructed to take one capsule of coenzyme Q10 or a placebo every day for 30 days following SRP. Clinical parameters, i.e., plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment level (CAL), and probing pocket depth (PPD), were recorded at baseline and four weeks after treatment by two masked and calibrated examiners. The study results were reported as (mean ± standard deviations) and frequencies (percentages). Results: One month after the intervention, PPD, CAL, BOP, and PI indices in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group. One month after the intervention, the GI was similar in both groups. A significant decrease was observed in the GI in both groups after the intervention. Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that Q10 orally with scaling and root planing in patients with controlled diabetes with chronic periodontitis might accelerate the treatment process and significantly reduce the pocket depth.
