RESUMO

Purpose: The presence of toxic heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural crops can be considered as a noteworthy threat for consumers. The aim of this study was to assess the content of HMs (Pb, As, Cr, Cd, Co, Hg, and Ag) and their potential health risk in summer crops and vegetables (watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, melon, tomato, onion, potato, raw and stewed vegetables) in Ilam province, Iran. Methods: Totally, 31 crop samples were collected from local farms during the 2019 harvest season and the elements content were evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The non-carcinogenic health risk of HMs to the adults and children was estimated by Monte Carlo simulation method and target hazard quotients (THQs). Results: In general, the results showed that the concentration of Cr in the studied agricultural crops was higher than other HMs. As well as, the carcinogenic risk (CR) obtained for adults and children were more than the acceptable range for As. Also, CR for As in raw vegetable was the most ( 8.19E-1) and violated the threshold risk limit. The total carcinogenic risk of HMs in children was higher than that in adults. Conclusion: These results suggest that the agricultural crops were not safe for human consumption with potential risks associated. Due to the possible health effects of such products consumption, proper action should be taken to avoid chronic exposure, prevention of further pollution and consequent adverse health implications.

RESUMO

Introduction: Zinc is an essential trace element involved in different physiological functions. During pregnancy, it plays a crucial role in healthy embryogenesis. Abortion is the most severe problem associated with early pregnancy complications. This study aims to compare the levels of Zn in mothers with and without abortion. Methods: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published between 1980 and 2022 in PubMed, Science Direct, Pro Quest, Wiley, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. The search was conducted using both main and Mesh keywords, specifically targeting terms related to abortion, pregnancy loss, and zinc. Heterogeneity in the studies included in the meta-analysis was evaluated using statistical tests such as the chi-square test, I2, and forest plots. Publication bias was assessed using Begg's and Egger's tests. All analyses were conducted using Stata 15, and statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. Results: In general, nine studies were included in this analysis. Based on the results of the meta-analysis, the mean difference in the Zn level between mothers with and without abortion is equal to 193.18 (95 % CI; 107.11 to 279.25, P ≤ 0.001). In other words, the level of Zn in the group of mothers without abortion is 193 units higher than the group of mothers with abortion. The investigation into the comparison of Zn levels in mothers with and without abortion did not reveal any indication of publication bias according to both Begg's test (P-value = 0.858) and Egger's test (P-value = 0.270). Conclusion: the study findings indicate a significant association between lower levels of Zn in mothers with abortion compared to mothers without abortion. This suggests that a higher level of Zn may have a preventive effect on the occurrence of abortion in pregnant women. The data also highlights the positive role of trace metals, particularly Zn, in influencing pregnancy outcomes and suggests that maintaining adequate levels of Zn may reduce the likelihood of abortion occurrence, along with other contributing factors. It is important to note that further research, including prospective cohort and experimental studies, is needed to provide more substantial evidence and strengthen these findings.

RESUMO

The need for a biological disease risk assessment method to prevent the contagion of these diseases, particularly among healthcare personnel, is crucial. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate a biological risk assessment tool for biological agents among hospital personnel under COVID-19 conditions. This cross-sectional study was performed on 301 employees in two hospitals. Firstly, we identified the items affecting the contagion of biological agents. Then, we computed the weight of the items using the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method. We used the identified items and the estimated weights in the next step to develop a predictive equation. The outcome of this tool was the risk score of biological disease contagion. After that, we used the developed method to evaluate the biological risk of the participants. The ROC curve was also used to reveal accuracy of developed method. In this study, 29 items were identified and categorized into five dimensions, including environmental items, ventilation items, job items, equipment-related items, and organizational items. The weights of these dimensions were estimated at 0.172, 0.196, 0.255, 0.233, and 0.144, respectively. The final weight of items was used to develop a predictive equation. The area under ROC curves (AUC) was also calculated as 0.762 (95% CI: 0.704, 0.820) (p<0.001). The tools developed using these items had acceptable diagnostic accuracy for predicting the risk of biological diseases in health care. Therefore, one can apply it in identifying persons exposed to dangerous conditions.

RESUMO

The relationship between heavy metals and ulcerative colitis (UC) was investigated in several studies, but their results were not consistent. Therefore, in this systematic review study, the positive and negative effects of metal(loid)s (Zn, Cu, Fe, Se, Pb, Ni, and As) on UC disease were investigated. In this systematic search, 13 original articles from 1993 to 2021 were identified in Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed, and the Web of Science databases. In included studies, the concentrations of heavy metals and essential elements were measured in the blood, serum, intestinal biopsies, and hair samples of the patients. Some studies have also examined the heavy metal concentration in UC patients' diet and their drinking water. In the serum samples, Pb (220 ± 108 mg/L) and Cu (401.5 ± 104 µg/L) had the maximum concentrations among the other elements, as well as Zn and Fe had the highest levels in hair and intestinal tissue samples, respectively. In light of the selected articles, there is a possibility of a preventive role for Se and Zn in UC development. Moreover, exposure to Fe can exacerbate the symptoms of the disease. In conclusion, this review reveals that toxic metals, as ubiquitous environmental pollutants, can contribute to the exacerbation of inflammatory intestinal symptoms, and consumption of essential elements can play a vital role in the control of UC, and it is important to pay attention to them in health decisions.

RESUMO

Spontaneous abortion is a serious threat to the mothers' physical and mental well-being. The cause of spontaneous abortion is multifactorial disease. Prenatal non-essential metal exposure, particularly heavy metals, has been suggested to be associated with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the concentration of essential and non-essential metals including Pb, As, Zn, and Se and the risk of spontaneous abortion. In this case-control study the levels of Pb, As, Zn, and Se in the whole blood of 60 women with spontaneous abortion (case group) and also 60 women without spontaneous abortion (control group) were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results revealed statistically significant reductions (P < 0.001) in whole blood levels of Zn and Se as well as the levels of As and Pb had a substantial elevation (P < 0.001) in cases compared to controls. According to the findings, repeated spontaneous abortion may be influenced by increasing whole blood levels of heavy metals such as As (OR = 17.53, P = 0.001) and Pb (OR = 15.58, P = 0.001) as well as decreasing levels of vital micronutrients Zn (OR = 0.20, P = 0.001) and Se (OR = 0.14, P = 0.001). The results of this study support the idea that limiting intake of non-essential metals during pregnancy can decrease the risk of spontaneous abortion. Overall, the information presented is expected to help plan future fundamental and applied investigations on the spontaneous abortion.

RESUMO

Monkeypox (MPX) is one of the common infections between humans and animals that caused by a virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus. The Monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak is a global crisis triggered by environmental factors (virus, wastewater, surface, air) and amplified by the decisions of government officials and communities. The aim of this systematic review is to describe the environmental perspectives of MPXV with emphasis on risk assessment to prevent and control a new pandemic. Five online databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar were searched from 1990 to October 2022. Among 120 records, after the screening, four studies were included in the systematic review. The systematic review revealed that the possibility of MPXV transmission through wastewater, air, and the contaminated surfaces is a significant concern and its detection and destroying will play a major role in controlling the spread of the virus. Poxviruses have a high environmental stability, but are sensitive to all common chemical disinfectants. In conclusion, this study revealed that the environmental surveillance can be used as a complementary tool for detecting pathogens circulation in communities. This implies that the monitoring of environmental perspectives of MPXV can provide new awareness into virus transmission routes as well as the role of stakeholders and public health policies in MPXV risk management.

RESUMO

Re-emerging of monkeypox virus (MPXV), a neglected viral zoonotic disease, is a potential global threat. In the current COVID-19 pandemic status, the increasing reporting of positive cases of human MPXV in most countries of the world is a major reason for concern. This paper aims to describe the insights and lessons from COVID-19 pandemic in preventing the impending danger MPXV. In order to prevent further outbreak of disease, identify and control of MPXV transmission routes is necessary. Public health authorities should be vigilant and applied of effective strategies to mitigate the potential spread of MPXV. To address research gaps related to MPX outbreaks, national, regional, and international collaborations are required in time. Finally, the lessons and insights put forward point to the fact that, like the COVID-19 pandemic, people's health by and large depends on the decisions of government officials and people must continue to adhere to health principles. Hence, governments and policymakers must take appropriate precautionary measures to prevent similar crises like COVID-19 in the world.

RESUMO

The existence of synthetic dyes and heavy metals in textile wastewater is a serious problem. These compounds should be removed before discharge into the environment by an appropriate method. The present study was conducted for the characterization of efficient multi-functional strain Bacillus cereus MS038EH for the simultaneous removal of Reactive Black-5 and Chromium(VI). Maximum decolorization efficiency of 94.74% was achieved at pH 7, 35 °C, and 4% inoculum size for 900 mg/L of Reactive Black-5. Also, 94.10% efficiency was observed in the presence of 8 g/L of yeast extract as an optimum nitrogen source, while carbon sources had no significant effect on decolorization. It should be pointed out that the decolorization efficiency was decreased from 94 to 64% by increasing NaCl concentrations from 0 to 50 g/L, respectively. Bacillus cereus strain MS038EH could decolorize 94.31% of Reactive Black-5 (900 mg/L) and remove 87.31% of chromium(VI) (30 mg/L) within 36 h. Results of Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy proved that Reactive Black-5 was cleaved into the lower molecular weight products without any azo bonds. However, the phyto-toxicity analysis showed that Reactive Black-5 was not toxic for Triticum aestivum and Maize, while biologically treated Reactive Black-5 was toxic for seeds. Therefore, ultraviolet-C/H2O2 was applied for the detoxification of biotransformed products. When ultraviolet-C/H2O2 was applied as post-treatment, the seeds were germinated completely. It is demonstrated that the application of ultraviolet-C/H2O2 after anaerobic treatment is effective for toxicity reduction of textile wastewater.

RESUMO

The application of halotolerant microorganisms capable of decolorizing is attractive. Decolorization mechanism, the effect of different parameters on the decolorization percentage, and toxicity analysis of Reactive Black 5 before and after decolorization were investigated in the present study. The decolorization percentage for live cells of Staphylococcus sp. strain MEH038S was more than dead cells, which demonstrated that Reactive Black 5 was decolorized through the degradation process. The results confirmed that an FMN-dependent NADH-azoreductase gene was responsible for the decolorization and then was identified as Staphylococcus sp. EFS01 azoreductase from a moderately halotolerant Staphylococcus strain for the first time. The maximal decolorization of 98.15% was observed at pH 6.5 and 35 ° C for 50 mg/L of Reactive Black 5. In addition, more than 90% decolorization was achieved with 5-40 g/L of NaCl. The results of Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that Reactive Black 5 was broken to the lower molecular weight compounds without any chromophoric azo groups. Phytotoxicity and fish toxicity proved that the biotransformed metabolites of Reactive Black 5 degradation were more toxic than the original dye. The moderate halotolerant strain exhibited a remarkable decolorization capability and can be applied for textile wastewater treatment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: An azoreductase gene from a moderately halotolerant Staphylococcus was identified. More than 90% decolorization efficiency was observed under high-salt conditions. Biotransformed metabolites of RB5 degradation were identified. Toxicity analysis of biotransformed metabolites was investigated.

RESUMO

The novel SARS-CoV-2 outbreak was declared as pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. Understanding the airborne route of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is essential for infection prevention and control. In this study, a total of 107 indoor air samples (45 SARS-CoV-2, 62 bacteria, and fungi) were collected from different wards of the Hajar Hospital in Shahrekord, Iran. Simultaneously, bacterial and fungal samples were also collected from the ambient air of hospital yard. Overall, 6 positive air samples were detected in the infectious 1 and infectious 2 wards, intensive care unit (ICU), computed tomography (CT) scan, respiratory patients' clinic, and personal protective equipment (PPE) room. Also, airborne bacteria and fungi were simultaneously detected in the various wards of the hospital with concentrations ranging from 14 to 106 CFU m-3 and 18 to 141 CFU m-3, respectively. The highest mean concentrations of bacteria and fungi were observed in respiratory patients' clinics and ICU wards, respectively. Significant correlation (p < 0.05) was found between airborne bacterial concentration and the presence of SARS-CoV-2, while no significant correlation was found between fungi concentration and the virus presence. This study provided an additional evidence about the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the indoor air of a hospital that admitted COVID-19 patients. Moreover, it was revealed that the monitoring of microbial quality of indoor air in such hospitals is very important, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, for controlling the nosocomial infections.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In medicine, ozone therapy is effectively used in a broad spectrum of diseases. Reviews have shown that ozone gas demonstrates potent antimicrobial effects against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, such as oral bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasite even in resistant strains. The present investigation was designed to assess the protoscolicidal effects of ozone gas on hydatid cysts protoscoleces in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Hydatid cyst protoscoleces were acquired from sheep livers that were slaughtered at Kerman slaughterhouse, Iran. The viability of protoscoleces was assessed by the eosin exclusion examination after exposure with ozone gas for 1 to 14 min in vitro and ex vivo. RESULTS: In this study, in vitro assay showed that ozone gas at the concentration of 20 mg/L killed 85 and 100% of hydatid cyst protoscoleces after 4 and 6 min of treatment, respectively. However, in the ex vivo analysis, a longer time was needed to confirm a potent protoscolicidal activity such that ozone gas after an exposure time of 12 min, 100% of the protoscoleces were killed within the hydatid cyst. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the findings of the present study showed that ozone gas at low concentrations (20 mg/L) and short times (4-6 min) might be used as a novel protoscolicidal drug for use in hydatid cyst surgery. However, more clinical surveys are required to discover the precise biological activity of ozone gas in animal and human subjects.

RESUMO

Date Press Cake (DPC) is an inevitable by-product of date processing industries and may pose environmental problems if not managed properly. In this study, DPC was converted into activated carbon using solid NaOH under various activation conditions. The prepared activated carbon showed high specific surface area (2025.9 m2 g-1) and microporous texture (86.01%). It was successfully applied for the adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions with maximum monolayer adsorption capacities as high as 282.8 mg g-1 (pH = 2) and 198.0 mg g-1 (pH = 5). The kinetic and isotherm experimental data of Cr(VI) adsorption onto the activated carbon were best described by Elovich and Redlich-Peterson models, respectively. It was found that the Cr(VI) adsorption onto the DPC-derived activated carbon was predominantly a chemisorption process with limited desorption rates (below 50%). Overall, Date Press Cake could be considered as an abundant and renewable agro-industrial precursor for the production of high quality activated carbon.

RESUMO

The integration of bioventing (BV) and soil vapor extraction (SVE) appears to be an effective combination method for soil decontamination. This paper serves two main purposes: it evaluates the effects of soil water content (SWC) and air flow rate on SVE and it investigates the transition regime between BV and SVE for toluene removal from sandy soils. 96 hours after air injection, more than 97% removal efficiency was achieved in all five experiments (carried out for SVE) including 5, 10, and 15% for SWC and 250 and 500 mL/min for air flow rate on SVE. The highest removal efficiency (>99.5%) of toluene was obtained by the combination of BV and SVE (AIBV: Air Injection Bioventing) after 96 h of air injection at a constant flow rate of 250 mL/min. It was found that AIBV has the highest efficiency for toluene removal from sandy soils and can remediate the vadose zone effectively to meet the soil guideline values for protection of groundwater.

RESUMO

The removal of xylene vapors was studied in a biofilter packed with a new hybrid (scoria/compost) packing material at various inlet loads (IL) and empty bed residence times (EBRT) of 90, 60, and 40s. The best performance was observed for EBRT of 90s, where a removal efficiency of 98% was obtained under steady state condition for inlet xylene concentration of 1.34 g m(-3), while a maximum elimination capacity of 97.5 g m(-3) h(-1) was observed for IL of 199.5 g m(-3) h(-1). Carbon dioxide production rates and the microbial counts for xylene-degraders followed xylene elimination capacities. Overall look to the results of this study indicates that the scoria/compost mixture could be considered as a potential biofilter carrier, with low pressure drop (here <4 mm H2O), to treat air streams containing VOCs.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to investigate the removal of toluene from gaseous solution through Glycyrrhiza glabra root (GGR) as a waste material. The batch adsorption experiments were conducted at various conditions including contact time, adsorbate concentration, humidity, and temperature. The adsorption capacity was increased by raising the sorbent humidity up to 50 percent. The adsorption of toluene was also increased over contact time by 12 h when the sorbent was saturated. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model fitted the adsorption data better than other kinetic and isotherm models, respectively. The Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm also showed that the sorption by GGR was physical in nature. The results of the thermodynamic analysis illustrated that the adsorption process is exothermic. GGR as a novel adsorbent has not previously been used for the adsorption of pollutants.
