RESUMO

AIM: The first aim of this study was to compare the VO2at lactate threshold (LT) and maximum rate of fat oxidation (Fat(max)) intensity in wrestlers. A secondary aim was to compare the different recovery trials in wrestlers for finding effective methods of lactate removal post-match. METHODS: Eight wrestlers (mean ± SD; age, 23.2 ± 1 year; VO(2max), 55.2 ± 3.4 mL.min⁻¹.kg⁻¹) completed four recovery trials in a counter-balanced order. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)), Fat(max), individual anaerobic threshold (IAT), individual ventilatory threshold (IVT), and LT were determined during a graded exercise test. Different recovery methods were performed at a similar time of the day after three 2 min wrestling match. Lactate concentration was obtained at rest, and at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 min of post-match. RESULTS: In wrestler, Fat(max) was significantly correlated with LT (r=0.47, P<0.05) and lactate concentration (mean ± SD) significantly increased during the match from (1.7 ± 0.2 mmol.L⁻¹) to (15.1 ± 1.3 mmol.L⁻¹). At 5 minute, IVT method provides greater reduce in blood lactate (79% ∆La) and in other time point (10, 15 and 20 min) Fat(max) intensity provides more reduce. CONCLUSION: Fat(max) intensity is the most effective method for removal lactate concentration in wrestlers. There may be a relationship between improve in endurance capacity and training at the Fat(max) intensity.

RESUMO

This article describes a superconducting microstrip resonator operating at 9.5 GHz (X-band) that is specially designed for pulsed ESR on thin films. A novel configuration consisting of an array of half-wave length microstrip transmission lines generates a uniform magnetic field over a 2-D region of 100×1000 µm(2) with field homogeneity better than 5×10(-2). Using the device, we demonstrate strong coupling of the resonator to an electron spin ensemble and pulsed ESR on Si:P.

RESUMO

Carbohydrate stores within muscle are considered essential as a fuel for prolonged endurance exercise, and regimes for enhancing such stores have proved successful in aiding performance. This study explored the effects of a hyperglycaemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp performed 18 h previously on subsequent prolonged endurance performance in cycling. Seven male subjects, accustomed to prolonged endurance cycling, performed 90 min of cycling at ~65% VO(2max) followed by a 16-km time trial 18 h after a 2-h hyperglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp (HCC). Hyperglycemia (10 mM) with insulin infused at 300 mU/m(2)/min over a 2-h period resulted in a total glucose uptake of 275 g (assessed by the area under the curve) of which glucose storage accounted for about 73% (i.e. 198 g). Patterns of substrate oxidation during 90-min exercise at 65% VO(2max) were not altered by HCC. Blood glucose and plasma insulin concentrations were higher during exercise after HCC compared with control (p < 0.05) while plasma NEFA was similar. Exercise performance was improved by 49 s and power output was 10-11% higher during the time trial (p < 0.05) after HCC. These data suggest that carbohydrate loading 18 h previously by means of a 2-h HCC improves cycling performance by 3.3% without any change in pattern of substrate oxidation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is a treatment strategy to relieve the symptoms of coronary artery disease (CAD). Based on determining the long term outcome of CABG using SF-36 Health Related Quality Of Life (HRQOL) questionnaire, the present study was conducted in our center to determine the CABG results one-year after the operation. METHODS: Between March 2005 and August 2009, 112 patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) who underwent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) were enrolled. Patients completed SF-36 HRQOL general health status questionnaire. Stepwise multiple linear regression models were used to detect independent variables predicting changes in each eight subscales of SF-36 questionnaire. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 61.4±0.9 years and most of them were male with three vessel diseases that were on pump CABG. The mean physical and mental component summary scores were 59.5±0.9 and 60.2±0.9, respectively. Physical functioning (PF) and role physical (RP) improved in males. Regression models showed that there were some statistical models with low R-square to predict role emotional (RE), general health (GH), PF and RP according to ejection fraction after surgery, diabetes, pump type of CABG and male gender. CONCLUSION: CABG has led to higher and more satisfactory outcomes for PF, RP and RE but lower in other scales comparing with normative data of the society and one-year post-operative scores of other studies. It could mostly be attributed to unmodified risk factors and progression of existing comorbidities.

RESUMO

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the jaws are extremely rare lesions, which are probably hamartomas of developmental malformations. In this article we present an extremely high-flow AVM of the lower jaw with exsanguinating bleeding from the socket of the exfoliated tooth. Repeated episodic bleedings were controlled with local pressure and packing. Digital subtraction angiography revealed a high-flow, high-shunt AVM. Preoperative embolization and external carotid artery ligation, dental extraction, curettage and packing with Gelfoam were done. Postoperative bleeding stopped, bruit ceased, and it had disappeared completely after 6 months follow-up. On the second follow-up visit, 3 months later, the patient was found to have no problems.

RESUMO

A series of seven osteomucosal defects of the palate were closed by split metatarsal osteocutaneous free flaps. All seven patients had successful closure of their defects with minimal facial scarring and insignificant donor site morbidity. This procedure, performed in one stage, avoids the use of previously compromised local tissues and improves the blood supply to the area, thereby enhancing the subsequent indicated reconstruction of other damaged structures.
