Introduction: This study explored the influence of the Theory of Planned Behavior constructs on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (HPVV) intentions and uptake among Hispanic parents in South Florida for their children aged 9-21. Method: A descriptive exploratory analysis was conducted using 39 surveys completed by Hispanic parents. These surveys encompassed demographic data and questions about HPVV uptake, intention, attitudes, subjective norms, knowledge, self-efficacy, and awareness. Results: Most participants were uninsured (77%), unemployed (59%), and had low Americanism acculturation (74%). A little over half were aware of the HPVV (54%), yet most had high positive HPVV attitudes (95%) and self-efficacy (85%). HPVV intentions within the year were also high (82%); however, HPVV uptake (45%) and HPVV knowledge (40%) were low at the time of the study. Most parents reported physicians (72%) and nurses/nurse practitioners (59%) as the most influential individuals in their decision-making. A statistically significant relationship between HPVV intention and HPVV attitude (X_Wald^2 (1) = 5.71, p = 0.02., OR = 5.11) and between HPVV uptake and HPVV awareness (X_Wald^2 (1) = 4.63, p = 0.03., OR = 12) were observed. Conclusion: This study recommends further research and targeted interventions to improve HPVV awareness among Hispanic communities. The participants' highly positive attitudes and self-efficacy provide a hopeful outlook for future vaccination efforts within this demographic.

Chronic diseases (CDs) are increasingly common among the aging population. Some evidence suggests that older Hispanic women ages 50 years and older (OHW) are at an increased risk for CDs and poorer outcomes than other groups. This study investigated the preliminary efficacy of ActuaYa, a culturally tailored CD prevention and health promotion intervention for OHW. A prospective, single-group, repeated measures study (n = 50) was conducted in Florida. Clinical measures and surveys were collected at baseline and post-intervention at 3- and 6-month follow-up. Descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and McNemar tests were used for analysis. At baseline, more than half of the participants had a CD. Post-intervention results showed a significant decrease in participants' MAP, BMI, and A1C, and a significant increase in self-efficacy for exercise and HIV knowledge compared to baseline measures. The results of this study support the preliminary efficacy of ActuaYa in preventing CDs and increasing health promotion among OHW.

Cancer is becoming a public health issue in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This systematic review aims to synthesise psychosocial interventions and their effects on the health outcomes of adult cancer patients and their family caregivers in SSA. We identified eligible publications in English language from PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature Plus with Full Text, Embase, APA PsycInfo, Scopus, and African Index Medicus databases. We included psychosocial interventions targeted adult cancer patients/survivors or their family caregivers in SSA. This review identified five psychosocial interventions from six studies that support adult cancer patients and their family caregivers in SSA. The interventions focused on providing informational, psycho-cognitive, and social support. Three interventions significantly improved quality of life outcomes for cancer patients and their caregivers. Significant gaps exist between the rapidly increasing cancer burdens and the limited psychosocial educational interventions supporting adult cancer patients and their families in SSA. The reviewed studies provide preliminary evidence on development and testing interventions that aim to improve patients' and caregivers' quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize and examine current literature on survivorship experiences and psychosocial oncologic care programs of individuals affected by cancer in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: This was a systematic review guided by the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We searched 6 databases for articles published from inception to 21 October 2021. Articles were appraised using the Johanna Briggs Institute's Checklist for Qualitative Research. For data synthesis, we used the World Health Organization (WHO) quality of life framework [WHOQOL] to organize experiences into 6 domains/themes. RESULTS: Twenty-five qualitative studies were included in the synthesis. Studies focused on psychosocial care of adults (>18 years) affected by cancer in SSA. The common WHOQOL domains were social relations, spirituality/religion/personal beliefs, and psychological. CONCLUSION: Findings echo need for individuals with cancer and their caregivers. Healthcare professionals are an essential resource for information and support services that can be tailored to individuals need. This synthesis highlighted caregiver stress and stressors from the community that could impact care of individuals with cancer. A holistic approach is needed that incorporates professional and social aspects of care.

BACKGROUND: Among older adults, minority older women will account for 60% of the new HIV diagnoses. The psychosocial impact of living with HIV among this vulnerable population narrated by their own voices has been understudied. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to explore the psychosocial impact of living with HIV on minority older women. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 minority older women living with HIV at an Ambulatory Care Center HIV Clinic in South Florida. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Conventional content analysis was used to identify and define the major themes that emerged from the interviews. Questions included those concerning description of life after the HIV diagnosis, most challenging aspects of life after the diagnosis, and daily activities since the diagnosis. RESULTS: The analysis of the interview data led to five main themes: (I) Social Impact of HIV, (II) Threats to Health and Well-Being, (III) HIV as a Death Sentence, (IV) Spirituality, and (V) HIV Treatment Adherence. In their narratives, women described a myriad of psychosocial issues such as depressed mood, isolation, economic challenges, stigma, anhedonia of interest, fear of death, among others. CONCLUSIONS: There is a compelling empirical need for rapid implementation of a culturally tailored, holistic, low-cost, multistrategy intervention to early screen and reduce the psychosocial impact of HIV among minority older women.

Guided by the World Health Organization quality of life (WHOQOL) framework, this systematic review aimed to examine evidence about the prevalence and severity of QOL-related health problems and their influencing factors in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We identified eligible publications in English language from PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature Plus with Full Text, Embase, APA PsycInfo, Scopus, and African Index Medicus databases. We included quantitative descriptive studies that measured overall and subdomains of QOL as the outcome in adult patients/survivors with cancer in SSA. Twenty-six descriptive cross-sectional studies (27 papers) that were conducted since 1988 in different SSA countries among patients with various types of cancer met our inclusion criteria. We found inconsistencies in how the prevalence and severity of QOL-related health problems have been researched and reported across studies, which complicated comparing findings and drawing conclusions. The most common factors that influenced the overall and subdomains of QOL included coping; internal and external locus of control; symptoms and symptom management; and religious beliefs and religious care. Demographics (e.g., age and marital status), cancer-related factors (cancer stage and type of treatment), and social determinants of health (e.g., education, access to information and resources, financial distress, and urban vs rural residency) also impacted QOL and its subdomains. Our findings indicate the significant need for recognizing and managing QOL-related problems for cancer patients and caregivers in SSA. Research needs to use culturally adapted, standardized assessment tools and analysis approaches to better understand the QOL challenges this population faces. Comprehensive supportive care is needed to address the complex QOL issues in resource-limited SSA.

RESUMO

We report an international collaborative project to develop the first Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in Japan. We described the development and implementation of the first DNP program at the St. Luke's International University in Tokyo and the collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States. Faculty perceptions in both parties gradually evolved from the traditional perspective of international collaboration to the transitional and the beginning of the holistic partnership perspectives. The collaboration resulted in an innovative DNP program that directly addressed the gap between nursing education programs and Japan's clinical needs. The collaborative project cultivated a holistic international partnership. Rather than reporting a manual for international collaboration, we present our reflections and outcomes as narratives that others could use to achieve a holistic global partnership.

PURPOSE: HPV vaccination among United States's rural Hispanic youth is suboptimal to the Healthy People 2030 goal. Rural Hispanic parents' HPV vaccine (HPVV) perceptions have influenced these low rates. Furthermore, few effective interventions for increasing HPV vaccination among rural Hispanic populations exist. This study aimed to determine rural Hispanic parent's preferred HPV and HPVV learning methods to guide future HPV prevention interventions. DESIGN AND METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used. A total of 23 rural Hispanic parents from South Florida participated in four focus groups. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze the transcripts. RESULTS: Three overcharging themes were identified: 1) Learning method preferences for parents, 2) Learning method preferences for youth, and 3) Learning method preferences for families. Sub-themes included participants' preferences on their interest for an intervention, target audiences, teaching methods, availability of community members, intervention facilitators, and content. CONCLUSIONS: Addressing HPV vaccination by developing culturally tailored programs for rural Hispanic parents is urgently needed to prevent HPV and HPV-related cancers among this disproportionately affected population. Findings highlight essential elements that should be considered when designing an intervention for increasing HPV vaccination among Hispanics in rural settings. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Pediatric nurses must offer culturally appropriate HPVV education and literature and proactively recommend the HPVV at every opportunity. Pediatric nurses can administer the HPVV at schools and community health fairs while clinics can play educational clips in waiting and examination rooms.

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of literature describing factors supporting a successful transition from a career-development fellowship to resumption of the full complement of faculty roles. PURPOSE: Because little is known about the transition back to the full faculty role, a subset of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Nurse Faculty Scholars (NFS) was interviewed to evaluate the self-identified challenges and opportunities that the scholars faced and factors contributing to their success when they reassumed the full faculty role. METHODS: A subset of scholars from cohorts beginning the RWJF NFS program between 2008 and 2012 (n = 10) was interviewed by members of the NFS National Advisory Committee. NFSs identified challenges and opportunities faced as they transitioned to their faculty roles following completion of the career development fellowship as well as the character of support received from individuals in their organizational influencing the experience of the faculty transition. Evaluation outcomes include recommendations for transition planning for home institutions, colleagues and fellows. RESULTS: NFSs identified transition challenges including managing multiple responsibilities and increased teaching demands coupled with loss of protected time and funding for scholarly work. Opportunities for career advancement were influenced by effective mentorship, institutional supports including advocacy and allocation of time and responsibilities consistent with continued research productivity. Issues contributing to a more difficult transition included non-supportive relationships among administrators and colleagues and newly assigned responsibilities that detracted from success in meeting expectations for tenure and promotion. Effective transition from fellow to faculty included plans for continued mentorship and stakeholder engagement of administration, mentors and faculty colleagues. CONCLUSIONS: Effective transition from fellow to the full complement of the faculty role benefits both the home institution and scholar. Positive outcomes may be contingent on scholar support and organizational investment during the transition period.

PURPOSE: Few studies have tried to understand the factors related to HPV vaccination among Hispanics living in rural communities in the United States (US). Nationally, HPV vaccination among Hispanics is suboptimal (26.1%) compared to the HealthyPeople 2020 goal of 80% and even more suboptimal in rural communties. This study aimed to determine the salient factors among Hispanic parents for vaccinating their children against HPV and for designing a future HPV prevention intervention for Hispanics. DESIGN AND METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used. Saturation was reached after conducting four focus groups with 23 Hispanic parents from rural communities in South Florida. Directed content analysis using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs was used to analyze the transcripts. RESULTS: All TPB constructs were identified as salient factors for HPV vaccination including background factors, attitudes towards the behavior, perceived norms, perceived behavioral control, actual control, intention, and behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Addressing HPV vaccination by developing educational programs based on the TPB and tailored to meet the needs of Hispanic parents is urgently needed to prevent HPV among Hispanics in rural US communities. This approach can also serve as a directive to target HPV vaccination among Hispanics in other rural areas in the US. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Pediatric nurses must proactively promote and recommend the HPV vaccine (HPVV), educate parents on having sex-related discussions with their children, include children in the HPVV education and decision, bundle the HPVV with other child vaccines, and utilize reminder systems to ensure completion of the vaccine series.

Latina immigrants living in farmworker communities are a population in need of HIV risk reduction interventions due to their high risk for HIV and their limited access to health care and prevention services. The present study is the first to evaluate the efficacy of SEPA intervention on a cohort of 234 pre-established Latina immigrants living in farmworker communities in South Florida. SEPA is a CDC evidenced-based and Latinx culturally tailored HIV risk reduction intervention. Data were collected through structured interviews at baseline and 6-months post intervention and were analyzed using generalized linear mixed modeling. Results showed that SEPA was effective on increasing condom use during vaginal and anal sex with male partners, self-efficacy for condom use, intentions to negotiate safe sex and HIV-related knowledge from baseline to 6-months post intervention. These findings contribute to the evidence supporting the efficacy of SEPA by confirming previous results and demonstrating the efficacy of this intervention for Latinas of diverse backgrounds.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of selected facilitators, barriers, beliefs, and knowledge suggested by the literature to be associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing among heterosexual Hispanic women. DESIGN: This study utilizes a cross-sectional design to analyze secondary data from SEPA III: The Effectiveness Trial. SEPA stands for Salud, Educacion, Prevencion y Autocuidado, which translates to Health, Education, Prevention, and Self-Care. The Social Cognitive Model (SCM) guided this study. METHODS: Three hundred twenty heterosexual Hispanic women 18 to 50 years of age participated in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression. FINDINGS: The most common facilitators for HIV testing were receiving recommendations from a healthcare provider (HCP) and the test is offered by an HCP rather than women asking for it. The most common barrier to testing was having no reason to believe they were infected. Most women believed a positive test result would encourage them to take better care of themselves. However, as much as 15% of women reported desires to kill or hurt themselves if they test positive. On the other hand, a negative result would make them assume their partners are negative and thus do not need to be tested. Significantly, explanatory variables related to HIV testing were knowledge and the HIV test is offered by an HCP instead of women asking for it. CONCLUSIONS: Strengthening HIV knowledge and offering HIV tests are significant contributions that nurses make to the health of Hispanic women. The SCM can be used to design programs to increase HIV testing among Hispanic women. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Nurses are encouraged to offer testing and provide culturally competent HIV prevention education to increase HIV testing among Hispanic women.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic women and children who become overweight or obese are at risk for developing prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Interdisciplinary interventions which target Hispanic women and their 3-5-year old children to improve nutrition and physical activity behaviors, manage adiposity and weight in mothers, and prevent excessive adiposity and weight gain trajectory in their children offer promise to break the intergenerational cycle. METHODS: Using a randomized two-group, repeated measures experimental design, the goal of the proposed study is to investigate the efficacy of a 12-week nutrition and physical activity program including education, coping skills training, and home-based intervention in Hispanic women and their 3-5-year old children. The program includes 6 months of continued monthly contact to help overweight and obese Hispanic mothers and their children improve adiposity, weight (trajectory for children), health behaviors (nutrition and physical activity), and self-efficacy We will partner with two federally qualified health departments in Durham and Chatham counties, North Carolina to enroll participants. We will partner with community centers to deliver the intervention. A total of 294 Hispanic women with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and 294 Hispanic 3-5-year old children with a ≥ 25th BMI percentile will be enrolled over 4 years and randomized to the experimental or equal attention control group. Data will be collected at Time 1 (0 months [baseline]) to Time 2 (9 months [completion of the intervention]) and Time 1 to Time 3 (15 months [after 6 months with no contact from the study staff]). Data collected will include adiposity and weight in mothers and children (primary outcomes). Secondary outcomes will include health behaviors and self-efficacy in the mothers and in the children. We will also evaluate the cost of delivering the program for public health departments. We will use general linear mixed models to test the hypotheses. DISCUSSION: Decreasing overweight and obesity in Hispanic women and slowing adiposity and weight gain trajectory in young Hispanic children is urgently needed to decrease morbidity, mortality, and future health care costs. Development of leadership capacities in the nursing workforce is essential to achieving universal health in the Region of the Americas. This evaluation considered the effectiveness of an online leadership course offered in English and Spanish to nurses throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The online course was an asynchronous eight-module leadership nursing course created and offered by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Virtual Campus. A retrospective, descriptive design was used to evaluate learner performance data from the modules. Learner performance on the course was analyzed. Electronic surveys were distributed to individuals who withdrew prior to course completion to obtain information regarding the reason for withdrawal. In all, 289 individuals from 41 countries participated in the online course. Learner performance demonstrated improvement from pre- to post-test. The most frequent reason for not completing the course was being too busy with other obligations. The Spanish-language course version received more enrollment applications than any other course in the virtual campus' 12-year history. The evaluation concluded that continuing education that develops nursing leadership is desired across Latin America and the Caribbean. Online education through the PAHO Virtual Campus may be a low-cost yet powerful means of disseminating knowledge to the nursing workforce throughout the Americas.


El desarrollo de las capacidades de liderazgo en el personal de enfermería es esencial para alcanzar la salud universal en la Región de las Américas. En esta evaluación se analizó la eficacia de un curso de liderazgo en línea en inglés y en español que se ofreció a personal de enfermería en toda América Latina y el Caribe. El curso en línea fue un curso asíncrono de liderazgo en enfermería de ocho módulos, creado y ofrecido por el Campus Virtual de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS). Se usó un diseño retrospectivo y descriptivo para evaluar los datos de desempeño de los alumnos en los módulos. Se analizó el desempeño de los alumnos en cuanto al aprendizaje el curso. Se enviaron encuestas electrónicas a las personas que abandonaron el curso antes de su finalización para obtener información sobre los motivos de deserción.En total, 289 personas de 41 países participaron en los cursos en línea. Se detectaron mejoras en el desempeño de los alumnos antes y después de la prueba. La razón más frecuente por la que no completaron el curso fue que estaban muy ocupados con otras obligaciones. La versión del curso en español tuvo más inscriptos que cualquier otro curso en los 12 años del Campus Virtual. La conclusión de la evaluación fue que en toda América Latina y el Caribe se desea recibir educación continua que fomente las capacidades de liderazgo en enfermería. La educación en línea por medio del Campus Virtual de la OPS puede ser un medio económico, pero a la vez poderoso, de difundir conocimiento al personal de enfermería en la Región de las Américas.


Desenvolver a capacidade de liderança na equipe de enfermagem é fundamental para alcançar a saúde universal na Região das Américas. Foi realizada uma avaliação da efetividade de um curso online de práticas de liderança em enfermagem ministrado em inglês e em espanhol ao pessoal de enfermagem em toda a América Latina e o Caribe. Tratou-se de um curso online assíncrono com oito módulos sobre práticas de liderança em enfermagem, elaborado e oferecido pelo Campus Virtual da Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (OPAS). Foi usado um delineamento descritivo retrospectivo para avaliar os dados do desempenho dos alunos nos módulos. Foram enviadas aos participantes que não concluíram o curso uma pesquisa eletrônica para a coleta de dados sobre os motivos do abandono.Ao todo, 289 profissionais de 41 países fizeram o curso online. Houve melhoria no desempenho dos alunos entre o pré-teste e o pós-teste. Estar muito ocupado com outros compromissos foi o motivo mais frequentemente informado para não concluir o curso. O número de inscrições de profissionais no curso na versão em espanhol foi o mais alto dentre os cursos oferecidos nos 12 anos de vida do campus virtual. Esta avaliação demonstrou que existe uma demanda por educação continuada para desenvolver liderança em enfermagem na América Latina e Caribe. A educação online por meio do Campus Virtual da OPAS é um recurso de baixo custo, porém de grande influência, para difundir o conhecimento entre o pessoal de enfermagem nas Américas.

INTRODUCTION: HIV transmission presents an ongoing risk to Hispanic women, and prevention efforts remain a priority. The use of technology to prevent HIV transmission among Hispanic women and those of lower socioeconomic status underscore the need for effective implementation of technology. The purpose of this study is to describe technology preferences and predictors of the use of the internet for HIV prevention among low-income Hispanic women. METHOD: A secondary analysis was conducted using baseline data from an intervention to prevent HIV among 320 Hispanic women. The parent study was SEPA, Salud (health), Educación (education), Promoción (promotion), y [and] Autocuidado (self-care). RESULTS: Most participants reported using personal technology, such as smartphones (90.6%), the internet (78.1%), and personal email (67.5%), every day. Most (71.3%) participants were open to learning about HIV education via the internet. In the logistic regression analysis, education and time since the last visit to the health care provider were significant predictors of the use of the internet to learn about HIV prevention, after controlling for age, living with the partner, and years living in the United States. CONCLUSION: Hispanic women demonstrated high levels of comfort with different forms of technology. These results indicated the potential to expand future HIV intervention efforts by implementing electronic dissemination of bilingual and culturally appropriate information for Hispanic women of diverse ages.

ABSTRACT Development of leadership capacities in the nursing workforce is essential to achieving universal health in the Region of the Americas. This evaluation considered the effectiveness of an online leadership course offered in English and Spanish to nurses throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The online course was an asynchronous eight-module leadership nursing course created and offered by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Virtual Campus. A retrospective, descriptive design was used to evaluate learner performance data from the modules. Learner performance on the course was analyzed. Electronic surveys were distributed to individuals who withdrew prior to course completion to obtain information regarding the reason for withdrawal. In all, 289 individuals from 41 countries participated in the online course. Learner performance demonstrated improvement from pre- to post-test. The most frequent reason for not completing the course was being too busy with other obligations. The Spanish-language course version received more enrollment applications than any other course in the virtual campus' 12-year history. The evaluation concluded that continuing education that develops nursing leadership is desired across Latin America and the Caribbean. Online education through the PAHO Virtual Campus may be a low-cost yet powerful means of disseminating knowledge to the nursing workforce throughout the Americas.


RESUMEN El desarrollo de las capacidades de liderazgo en el personal de enfermería es esencial para alcanzar la salud universal en la Región de las Américas. En esta evaluación se analizó la eficacia de un curso de liderazgo en línea en inglés y en español que se ofreció a personal de enfermería en toda América Latina y el Caribe. El curso en línea fue un curso asíncrono de liderazgo en enfermería de ocho módulos, creado y ofrecido por el Campus Virtual de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS). Se usó un diseño retrospectivo y descriptivo para evaluar los datos de desempeño de los alumnos en los módulos. Se analizó el desempeño de los alumnos en cuanto al aprendizaje el curso. Se enviaron encuestas electrónicas a las personas que abandonaron el curso antes de su finalización para obtener información sobre los motivos de deserción. En total, 289 personas de 41 países participaron en los cursos en línea. Se detectaron mejoras en el desempeño de los alumnos antes y después de la prueba. La razón más frecuente por la que no completaron el curso fue que estaban muy ocupados con otras obligaciones. La versión del curso en español tuvo más inscriptos que cualquier otro curso en los 12 años del Campus Virtual. La conclusión de la evaluación fue que en toda América Latina y el Caribe se desea recibir educación continua que fomente las capacidades de liderazgo en enfermería. La educación en línea por medio del Campus Virtual de la OPS puede ser un medio económico, pero a la vez poderoso, de difundir conocimiento al personal de enfermería en la Región de las Américas.


RESUMO Desenvolver a capacidade de liderança na equipe de enfermagem é fundamental para alcançar a saúde universal na Região das Américas. Foi realizada uma avaliação da efetividade de um curso online de práticas de liderança em enfermagem ministrado em inglês e em espanhol ao pessoal de enfermagem em toda a América Latina e o Caribe. Tratou-se de um curso online assíncrono com oito módulos sobre práticas de liderança em enfermagem, elaborado e oferecido pelo Campus Virtual da Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (OPAS). Foi usado um delineamento descritivo retrospectivo para avaliar os dados do desempenho dos alunos nos módulos. Foram enviadas aos participantes que não concluíram o curso uma pesquisa eletrônica para a coleta de dados sobre os motivos do abandono. Ao todo, 289 profissionais de 41 países fizeram o curso online. Houve melhoria no desempenho dos alunos entre o pré-teste e o pós-teste. Estar muito ocupado com outros compromissos foi o motivo mais frequentemente informado para não concluir o curso. O número de inscrições de profissionais no curso na versão em espanhol foi o mais alto dentre os cursos oferecidos nos 12 anos de vida do campus virtual. Esta avaliação demonstrou que existe uma demanda por educação continuada para desenvolver liderança em enfermagem na América Latina e Caribe. A educação online por meio do Campus Virtual da OPAS é um recurso de baixo custo, porém de grande influência, para difundir o conhecimento entre o pessoal de enfermagem nas Américas.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the validity of a single violence question compared with revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) as an initial tool which can be easily used in community-based health care settings to detect IPV in Latina women. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: The study was conducted using secondary analyses of the baseline data from a culturally tailored HIV risk prevention project SEPA. A total of 657 Mexican and Puerto-Rican women aged 18-40, who reported sexual activities were interviewed. MEASURES: We used data regarding sociodemographic factors, Latino acculturation, a single violence question of "Did your partner hit or hurt you in any way?" and the CTS2 measuring intimate partner violence. RESULTS: Using the CTS2 as a gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of a single question for screening partner physical violence was 45.9% and 94.7%, respectively. The positive likelihood ratio of a single question for physical violence was 8.59. The sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratio of a single question for screening psychological aggression were 17.9%, 98.5%, and 11.89, respectively. CONCLUSION: While a single question used in our study needs further improvement for desirable sensitivity, it may be usable as an initial question for detecting IPV.
