INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare the degree of posterior malleolar exposure, the tension of the flap containing the posteromedial neurovascular bundle (NVB), and the distance between the surgical incision and the NVB using three different posteromedial ankle approaches. METHODS: Three approaches were compared: medial posteromedial (MePM) modified posteromedial (MoPM) and posteromedial (PM). We measured the minimal tension of the flap containing the NVB that allowed proper exposure. In the second stage, an axial cut was performed, and we measured the degree of posterior malleolar exposure and the distance between the incision and the NVB RESULTS: There were significant differences between the three approaches examined regarding the degree of posterior malleolar exposure and distance from the incision to the NBV,favoring the PM approach (71,00% ± 1.83 and 25.50 mm ± 4.20). The PM approach provided a significantly lower tension to the flap containing the posteromedial NVB (6.18 N ± 1.28) compared to the other two approaches CONCLUSION: The PM approach achieved the highest degree of posterior malleolar exposure, the lowest tension to the posteromedial NVB, and the greatest distance between the incision and the NBV. Thus, we believe it should be considered the approach of choicefor large fractures of the posteromedial aspect of the PM.

Host-associated microbial communities are shaped by myriad factors ranging from host conditions, environmental conditions and other microbes. Disentangling the ecological impact of each of these factors can be particularly difficult as many variables are correlated. Here, we leveraged earthquake-induced changes in host population structure to assess the influence of population crashes on marine microbial ecosystems. A large (7.8 magnitude) earthquake in New Zealand in 2016 led to widespread coastal uplift of up to ~6 m, sufficient to locally extirpate some intertidal southern bull kelp populations. These uplifted populations are slowly recovering, but remain at much lower densities than at nearby, less-uplifted sites. By comparing the microbial communities of the hosts from disturbed and relatively undisturbed populations using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we observed that disturbed host populations supported higher functional, taxonomic and phylogenetic microbial beta diversity than non-disturbed host populations. Our findings shed light on microbiome ecological assembly processes, particularly highlighting that large-scale disturbances that affect host populations can dramatically influence microbiome structure. We suggest that disturbance-induced changes in host density limit the dispersal opportunities of microbes, with host community connectivity declining with the density of host populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Contrasting patterns of host and microbiome biogeography can provide insight into the drivers of microbial community assembly. Distance-decay relationships are a classic biogeographical pattern shaped by interactions between selective and non-selective processes. Joint biogeography of microbiomes and their hosts is of increasing interest owing to the potential for microbiome-facilitated adaptation. METHODS: In this study, we examine the coupled biogeography of the model macroalga Durvillaea and its microbiome using a combination of genotyping by sequencing (host) and 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing (microbiome). Alongside these approaches, we use environmental data to characterize the relationship between the microbiome, the host, and the environment. KEY RESULTS: We show that although the host and microbiome exhibit shared biogeographical structure, these arise from different processes, with host biogeography showing classic signs of geographical distance decay, but with the microbiome showing environmental distance decay. Examination of microbial subcommunities, defined by abundance, revealed that the abundance of microbes is linked to environmental selection. As microbes become less common, the dominant ecological processes shift away from selective processes and towards neutral processes. Contrary to expectations, we found that ecological drift does not promote structuring of the microbiome. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that although host macroalgae exhibit a relatively 'typical' biogeographical pattern of declining similarity with increasing geographical distance, the microbiome is more variable and is shaped primarily by environmental conditions. Our findings suggest that the Baas Becking hypothesis of 'everything is everywhere, the environment selects' might be a useful hypothesis to understand the biogeography of macroalgal microbiomes. As environmental conditions change in response to anthropogenic influences, the processes structuring the microbiome of macroalgae might shift, whereas those governing the host biogeography are less likely to change. As a result, increasingly decoupled host-microbe biogeography might be observed in response to such human influences.

Dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) is expressed in striatopallidal neurons and decreases forskolin-stimulated cyclic adenine monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) release. Dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) mRNA is expressed in a population of striatal D2R-expressing neurons. Also, D3R protein and binding have been reported in the neuropil of globus pallidus. We explore whether D2R and D3R colocalize in striatopallidal terminals and whether D3R modulates the D2R effect on forskolin-stimulated [3H]cAMP accumulation in pallidal synaptosomes and high K+ stimulated-[3H]GABA release in pallidal slices. Previous reports in heterologous systems indicate that calmodulin (CaM) and CaMKII modulate D2R and D3R functions; thus, we study whether this system regulates its functional interaction. D2R immunoprecipitates with CaM, and pretreatment with ophiobolin A or depolarization of synaptosomes with 15 mM of K+ decreases it. Both treatments increase the D2R inhibition of forskolin-stimulated [3H]cAMP accumulation when activated with quinpirole, indicating a negative modulation of CaM on D2R function. Quinpirole also activates D3R, potentiating D2R inhibition of cAMP accumulation in the ophiobolin A-treated synaptosomes. D2R and D3R immunoprecipitate in pallidal synaptosomes and decrease after the kainic acid striatal lesion, indicating the striatal origin of the presynaptic receptors. CaM-kinase II alfa (CaMKIIα) immunoprecipitates with D3R and increases after high K+ depolarization. In the presence of KN62, a CaMKIIα blocker, D3R potentiates D2R effects on cAMP accumulation in depolarized synaptosomes and GABA release in pallidal slices, indicating D3R function regulation by CaMKIIα. Our data indicate that D3R potentiates the D2R effect on cAMP accumulation and GABA release at pallidal terminals, an interaction regulated by the CaM-CaMKIIα system.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines promote preoperative education for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. However, the evidence sustaining these recommendations comes mainly from studies for hip and knee replacement surgery. Little is known about patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery. We aimed to map and characterize all the available evidence on preoperative education for patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery. METHODS: This study complies with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We searched eight databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL. We performed cross-citations and revised the references of included studies. We included studies addressing preoperative education in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery. We did not exclude studies because of the way of delivering education, the agent that provided it, or the content of the preoperative education addressed in the study. Two independent authors screened the articles and extracted the data. The aggregated data are presented in descriptive tables. RESULTS: Of 1596 retrieved records, only 15 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Four addressed preoperative education on patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery and the remaining 11 addressed a broader population, including patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery but did not provide separate data of them. Two studies reported that preoperative education decreases the length of stay of these patients, another reported that education increased the knowledge of the participants, and the other leaflets were well received by patients. CONCLUSION: This scoping review demonstrates that evidence on preoperative education in foot and ankle surgery is scarce. The available evidence supports the implementation of preoperative education in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery for now. The best method of education and the real impact of this education remain to be determined.

Although evolutionary biologists have long theorized that variation in DNA repair efficacy might explain some of the diversity of lifespan and cancer incidence across species, we have little data on the variability of normal germline mutagenesis outside of humans. Here, we shed light on the spectrum and etiology of mutagenesis across mammals by quantifying mutational sequence context biases using polymorphism data from thirteen species of mice, apes, bears, wolves, and cetaceans. After normalizing the mutation spectrum for reference genome accessibility and k-mer content, we use the Mantel test to deduce that mutation spectrum divergence is highly correlated with genetic divergence between species, whereas life history traits like reproductive age are weaker predictors of mutation spectrum divergence. Potential bioinformatic confounders are only weakly related to a small set of mutation spectrum features. We find that clock-like mutational signatures previously inferred from human cancers cannot explain the phylogenetic signal exhibited by the mammalian mutation spectrum, despite the ability of these signatures to fit each species' 3-mer spectrum with high cosine similarity. In contrast, parental aging signatures inferred from human de novo mutation data appear to explain much of the 1-mer spectrum's phylogenetic signal in combination with a novel mutational signature. We posit that future models purporting to explain the etiology of mammalian mutagenesis need to capture the fact that more closely related species have more similar mutation spectra; a model that fits each marginal spectrum with high cosine similarity is not guaranteed to capture this hierarchy of mutation spectrum variation among species.

Twentieth century industrial whaling pushed several species to the brink of extinction, with fin whales being the most impacted. However, a small, resident population in the Gulf of California was not targeted by whaling. Here, we analyzed 50 whole-genomes from the Eastern North Pacific (ENP) and Gulf of California (GOC) fin whale populations to investigate their demographic history and the genomic effects of natural and human-induced bottlenecks. We show that the two populations diverged ~16,000 years ago, after which the ENP population expanded and then suffered a 99% reduction in effective size during the whaling period. In contrast, the GOC population remained small and isolated, receiving less than one migrant per generation. However, this low level of migration has been crucial for maintaining its viability. Our study exposes the severity of whaling, emphasizes the importance of migration, and demonstrates the use of genome-based analyses and simulations to inform conservation strategies.

This paper presents a thermal study of a cavity receiver designed for a Fresnel-type linear solar collector (LFC). The study utilizes a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model implemented in ANSYS Fluent. The thermal behavior of air inside the cavity for a Fresnel collector is extensively examined. The receiver consists of a trapezoidal cavity with a set of six parallel absorber tubes, through which a thermal fluid circulates. The cavity has aluminum reflectors on the inner walls and glass window closing the aperture facing the primary reflectors of the solar collector. The two-dimensional numerical model represents a cross-section of the receiver, and aims to provide numerical results that allow to provide algebraic correlations for predicting heat losses in the receiver from the wall temperature of each of the six individual absorber tubes that compose it. The developed model is transient, utilizing the k-ε turbulent model. In addition, the study is completed with an analysis of the behavior of the air surrounding and inside the cavity, to evaluate its thermal performance. For this purpose, the velocity and temperature contours obtained with the two-dimensional model are discussed. Correlations are obtained to know the heat flux between the tubes and the heat loss through the window for any combination of temperatures for each pair of tubes, which has not been yet studied in the literature. The study reveals that radiative losses contribute to 81% of the total heat losses, with the outer tubes temperature being the main responsible for these losses. Furthermore, a dimensionless analysis examines the relationship between the Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers in comparison to reference problems based on canonical geometries dominated by buoyancy-driven flows. The performance is found to be similar to that of a downward hot flat plate.

Propósito del estudio: Explorar las preferencias educativas de los beneficiarios adultos de las Garantías Explicitas en Salud (GES) sometidos a una cirugía de endoprótesis total de cadera. Material y método: Estudio descriptivo de carácter mixto. Se diseñó una encuesta que exploró las preferencias educativas referentes a cada etapa del proceso quirúrgico de adultos mayores sometidos electivamente a endoprótesis total de cadera en un centro hospitalario universitario. La encuesta se aplicó retrospectivamente de manera telefónica por un encuestador entrenado. El tiempo transcurrido entre la aplicación de la encuesta y la cirugía fue entre 2 y 14 meses. Resultados: Se incluyeron 63 pacientes, cuya edad promedio fue 72,5 años y el 69,8% correspondía al sexo femenino. Con respecto a su previsión de salud el 57,2% era beneficiario de FONASA y el 42,7% de ISAPRE. Las preferencias de información descritas en nuestra muestra con respecto al proceso quirúrgico desde su inicio a fin, señalan a la cirugía propiamente tal (40,4%) y los cuidados post operatorios (29,3%) como los temas de más interés. Los temas de menor interés fueron los relacionados con cuidados preoperatorios (45,2%) y al proceso de hospitalización (31,7%). Los pacientes encuestados valoraron la información entregada previa a su cirugía como adecuada, útil y fácil de entender. Conclusiones: Los adultos mayores sometidos a endoprótesis señalaron la información específica referente a la cirugía y los cuidados post operatorios como los temas educativos de mayor interés. La información estándar entregada por los médicos tratantes fue bien recibida por los pacientes.


Purpose of the study: To explore the educational preferences of adults aged 65 years and older with hip osteoarthritis undergoing total hip replacement (THA). Methods: Mixed descriptive study. A survey was designed to explore the educational preferences regarding each stage of the surgical process in elderly patients undergoing electively THA for osteoarthritis in a university-affiliated hospital. The survey was applied retrospectively and telephonically by a trained interviewer between 2 and 14 months after the surgery.Results: Sixty-three patients were surveyed, whose average age was 72.5 years, and 69.8% corresponded to females. Regarding their health coverage, 57.2% were beneficiaries of FONASA and 42.7% of ISAPRE. The educational preferences described in our sample regarding the surgical process from its beginning to the end indicate that surgery (40.4%) and post-operative care (29.3%) as the most relevant topics. The topics of least interest were preoperative care (45.2%) and information related to hospitalization (31.7%). The surveyed pa-tients rated their treating physician's education as adequate, helpful, and easy to understand before their surgery. Conclusions: Elderly patients undergoing THA indicated that specific surgery and post-operative care information are the most relevant educational topics.

INTRODUCTION: As a result of the new coronavirus pandemic, a highly complex academic hospital in Latin America implemented a telemedicine service for the care of obstetric, pediatric, and adult patients. In 2020, regional emergency services collapsed due to the increase in demand for care, generating the need to open expansion services and seek strategies to provide timely care to consulting patients. OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively describe the clinical experience of patients who consulted the emergency department via telemedicine across a videoconference tool using digital platforms. METHODS: A descriptive study with retrospective data collection was conducted to describe the implementation of the teleconsultation care model for patients. We constructed the clinical process indicators to evaluate the model. RESULTS: A total of 4652 teleconsultations were registered. Telemedicine consultation was above 50% in the country and department and above 90% in Cali city. The average waiting time for care was estimated to be 1:59:52 h. A total of 275 patients were transferred to the emergency room after consultation. The principal reasons for consultation in the institutional telemedicine program were respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. Teleconsultations related to SARS-COV 2 infections reported 3775 patients (3127 with unidentified virus and 648 with the identified virus). CONCLUSIONS: Telemedicine is a tool that provides support and guidance to patients who consult emergency departments, reducing barriers to access health care and decreasing emergency department collapse.

In animals with chronic pathologies, the detection of proteinuria via the proteinuria: creatininuria ratio (UPC) and urinary protein electrophoresis allows for the early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The objective of this work was to identify and determine the magnitude of proteinuria and its electrophoretic pattern characterization in dogs with chronic diseases pathophysiologically related to proteinuria. With the studied patients, five groups were formed. The control group (CG) contained non-proteinuric cases. The cases with proteinuria were classified into four groups according to the concurrent disease: chronic inflammatory diseases (IG), neoplasms (NG), heart diseases (HG), and endocrine diseases (EG). For the statistical analysis, descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests were used. Data from 264 dogs were obtained; in the disease groups, proteinuria was observed in more than 30% as the only finding of kidney disease, evidencing a greater risk factor for proteinuria in the HG group (OR 4.047, CI 1.894-8.644, p < 0.0001). In the HG, NG, and EG groups, a higher frequency of glomerular pattern (GEP) related to glomerular hypertension was observed; in the IG, a higher frequency of mixed pattern (MEP) was observed. These findings are secondary to the hyperfiltration process that affects the glomerulus and the renal tubule.

The deep ocean (>200 m depth) is the largest habitat on Earth. Recent evidence suggests sulfur oxidation could be a major energy source for deep ocean microbes. However, the global relevance and the identity of the major players in sulfur oxidation in the oxygenated deep-water column remain elusive. Here we combined single-cell genomics, community metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and single-cell activity measurements on samples collected beneath the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica to characterize a ubiquitous mixotrophic bacterial group (UBA868) that dominates expression of RuBisCO genes and of key sulfur oxidation genes. Further analyses of the gene libraries from the 'Tara Oceans' and 'Malaspina' expeditions confirmed the ubiquitous distribution and global relevance of this enigmatic group in the expression of sulfur oxidation and dissolved inorganic carbon fixation genes across the global mesopelagic ocean. Our study also underscores the unrecognized importance of mixotrophic microbes in the biogeochemical cycles of the deep ocean.

Finding strategies to use the swim bladder of farmed totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) is of the utmost need to reduce waste. Fish swim bladders are rich in collagen; hence, extracting collagen is a promising alternative with benefits for aquaculture of totoaba and the environment. The elemental biochemical composition of totoaba swim bladders, including their proximate and amino acid compositions, was determined. Pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) was used to extract collagen from swim bladders, and its characteristics were analyzed. Alcalase and papain were used for the preparation of collagen hydrolysates. Swim bladders contained 95% protein, 2.4% fat, and 0.8% ash (on a dry basis). The essential amino acid content was low, but the functional amino acid content was high. The PSC yield was high, at 68% (dry weight). The amino acid composition profile, electrophoretic pattern, and structural integrity analyses of the isolated collagen suggested it is a typical type-I collagen with high purity. The denaturalization temperature was 32.5 °C, probably attributable to the imino acid content (205 residues/1000 residues). Papain-hydrolysates (≤3 kDa) of this collagen exhibited higher radical scavenging activity than Alcalase-hydrolysates. The swim bladder from the farmed totoaba could be an ideal source to produce high-quality type I collagen and may be considered an alternative to conventional collagen sources or bioactive peptides.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) is an abundant and readily accessible energy source in marine systems, but it remains unknown whether marine microbial communities consume this gas. Here we use a suite of approaches to show that marine bacteria consume H2 to support growth. Genes for H2-uptake hydrogenases are prevalent in global ocean metagenomes, highly expressed in metatranscriptomes and found across eight bacterial phyla. Capacity for H2 oxidation increases with depth and decreases with oxygen concentration, suggesting that H2 is important in environments with low primary production. Biogeochemical measurements of tropical, temperate and subantarctic waters, and axenic cultures show that marine microbes consume H2 supplied at environmentally relevant concentrations, yielding enough cell-specific power to support growth in bacteria with low energy requirements. Conversely, our results indicate that oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) primarily supports survival. Altogether, H2 is a notable energy source for marine bacteria and may influence oceanic ecology and biogeochemistry.

The Southern Ocean contributes substantially to the global biological carbon pump (BCP). Salps in the Southern Ocean, in particular Salpa thompsoni, are important grazers that produce large, fast-sinking fecal pellets. Here, we quantify the salp bloom impacts on microbial dynamics and the BCP, by contrasting locations differing in salp bloom presence/absence. Salp blooms coincide with phytoplankton dominated by diatoms or prymnesiophytes, depending on water mass characteristics. Their grazing is comparable to microzooplankton during their early bloom, resulting in a decrease of ~1/3 of primary production, and negative phytoplankton rates of change are associated with all salp locations. Particle export in salp waters is always higher, ranging 2- to 8- fold (average 5-fold), compared to non-salp locations, exporting up to 46% of primary production out of the euphotic zone. BCP efficiency increases from 5 to 28% in salp areas, which is among the highest recorded in the global ocean.

BACKGROUND: Posterior malleolus fractures occur in up to 50% of all ankle fractures. Several classification systems exist for their characterization, especially under CT. However, those classifications do not report the level of agreement or do it incompletely. This study aims to independently assess three posterior malleolus fracture classifications (Haraguchi, Bartonícek/Rammelt, and Mason). METHODS: This study was designed according to the Guidelines for Reporting Reliability and Agreement Studies. Ninety-four CT scans of patients with ankle fractures that had posterior malleolus fractures were included. Posterior malleolus fractures were assessed by six evaluators (three attending foot and ankle surgeons and three orthopaedic surgery residents) according to Haraguchi, Bartonícek/Rammelt, and Mason classifications. All images were reassessed by the same evaluators in a random sequence 3 weeks later. The kappa (k) coefficient was used to determine the interobserver and intraobserver agreement. Statistical significance was established using P < 0.05 with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The interobserver agreement was moderate for Haraguchi, Bartonícek/Rammelt, and Mason classifications with a global k value of 0.52 (95% CI, 0.43 to 0.60), 0.53 (95% CI, 0.46 to 0.61), and 0.54 (95% CI, 0.47 to 0.62), respectively. The intraobserver agreement was substantial for Haraguchi, Bartonícek/Rammelt, and Mason classifications, with an overall k value of 0.70 (95% CI, 0.64 to 0.74), 0.73 (95% CI, 0.68 to 0.78), and 0.73 (95% CI, 0.69 to 0.78), respectively. Interobserver and intraobserver agreement among orthopaedic surgeons and residents had no significant difference. CONCLUSION: The current classifications for posterior malleolus fractures showed a substantial intraobserver agreement. Nevertheless, the interobserver agreement obtained was just moderate for all classifications, independent of the level of expertise of the evaluators.

The genetic consequences of species-wide declines are rarely quantified because the timing and extent of the decline varies across the species' range. The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is a unique model in this regard. Their dramatic decline from thousands to fewer than 100 individuals per population occurred range-wide and nearly simultaneously due to the 18th-19th century fur trade. Consequently, each sea otter population represents an independent natural experiment of recovery after extreme population decline. We designed sequence capture probes for 50 Mb of sea otter exonic and neutral genomic regions. We sequenced 107 sea otters from five populations that span the species range to high coverage (18-76×) and three historical Californian samples from ~1500 and ~200 years ago to low coverage (1.5-3.5×). We observe distinct population structure and find that sea otters in California are the last survivors of a divergent lineage isolated for thousands of years and therefore warrant special conservation concern. We detect signals of extreme population decline in every surviving sea otter population and use this demographic history to design forward-in-time simulations of coding sequence. Our simulations indicate that this decline could lower the fitness of recovering populations for generations. However, the simulations also demonstrate how historically low effective population sizes prior to the fur trade may have mitigated the effects of population decline on genetic health. Our comprehensive approach shows how demographic inference from genomic data, coupled with simulations, allows assessment of extinction risk and different models of recovery.

La mucormicosis es una infección fúngica rara, con alta morbilidad y mortalidad. Se presenta principalmente en pa- cientes con diabetes mellitus no controlada, inmunocompro- metidos, con tratamiento crónicos con esteroides, entre otros. Actualmente, se cree que la pandemia de COVID-19 y los tratamientos con corticosteroides podrían estar implicados en el aumento de casos de esta micosis. Este hongo invade el sistema vascular, ocluyendo el flujo sanguíneo arterial y generando una rápida trombosis e isque- mia, lo que provoca la necrosis de los tejidos duros y blandos, con invasión rápida a los tejidos circundantes. Hay varias formas clínicas. En la cavidad bucal se presenta la variante rino-orbito-cerebral, que afecta el paladar en forma de lesión eritematosa o grisácea que puede progresar hacia la formación de una masa necrótica o ulceración con muy escaso sangrado de mucosa. Se manifiesta con síntomas típicos de una rinosinusitis con fiebre y dolor en las piezas dentarias superiores. El tratamiento consta de tres pilares fundamentales: el diagnóstico, un manejo adecuado de las comorbilidades y la combinación de las terapias antifúngica y quirúrgica. Desde el año 2020, la mucormicosis asociada a COVID-19 pasó a ser un evento de notificación obligatoria inmediata al Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia de la Salud (SNVS2.0) me- diante el Sistema Integrado de Información Sanitaria Argen- tina (SISA). Es importante destacar que se han reportado casos de mu- cormicosis luego de extracciones dentales; lo que impulsa a afianzar los conocimientos sobre esta enfermedad, extremar las medidas preventivas e incentivar el diagnóstico precoz en la atención odontológica, debido a la rapidez en la evolución de la patología (AU))


Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection, with high mor- bidity and mortality. It occurs mainly in patients with uncon- trolled diabetes mellitus, immunocompromised, on chronic treatment with steroids, among others. Currently, it is believed that the COVID-19 pandemic and the corticosteroid treatments could be one of the causes of increased cases. This fungus invades the vascular system, occluding arteri- al blood flow and generating rapid thrombosis and ischemia, which causes necrosis of hard and soft tissues, with rapid in- vasion to the surrounding tissues. There are several clinical forms. In the oral cavity, the rhino-orbito-cerebral variant presents itself affecting the pal- ate in the form of an erythematous or grayish lesion that can progress towards the formation of a necrotic mass or ulcera- tion with very little mucosal bleeding. It manifests itself with typical symptoms of rhinosinusitis, with fever and pain in the upper teeth. The treatment consists of three fundamental pillars: diag- nosis, proper management of comorbidities and the combina- tion of antifungal and surgical therapies. Since 2020, COVID-19 associated mucormycosis became an event of mandatory immediate notification to the National Health Surveillance System (SNVS2.0,) through the Argentina Integrated Health Information System (SISA). It is important to emphasize that mucormycosis cases had been reported following tooth extractions, which drives to strengthen knowledge about this disease, extreme preventive measures and encourage early diagnosis in dental care, due to the speed of the evolution of the pathology (AU))
