INTRODUCTION: Seasonal influenza is a viral transmissible infectious disease causing increased morbidity or mortality in frail subjects, especially those living in institutions. Measures to prevent the impact of infectious diseases were proposed based on the use of influenza vaccination among health-care professionals. We wanted to evaluate the acceptance of our institutional vaccination procedure initiated in 2005 and possible improvement. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent in May 2007 to all health-care professionals (n=730) to identify their current vaccine status in 2006 and their opinion concerning vaccination against influenza in 2007. RESULTS: Subsequently, 369 (50.2%) responses were obtained. Amongst those responding, 31.7% were vaccinated in 2006, 77.8% using the institutional procedure. Also, 221 (87.7%) nonvaccinated health-care professionals indicated their position concerning influenza vaccination: 37% of them would accept the vaccination in 2007 (on the condition that our current institutional procedure be improved), 63% of them would refuse influenza vaccines in spite of any improvement. CONCLUSION: Our study emphasizes that the use of an adapted procedure for influenza vaccination among health-care professionals could improve vaccine coverage. It also emphasizes that a margin of those professionals are still reluctant to vaccination.

Nanotechnology is stimulating the development of nanomanipulators, including tips to interact with individual nanosystems. Fabricating nanotips fulfilling the requirements of shape (size, aspect ratio), mechanical, magnetic, and electrical properties is a material science challenge. Here, we report the generation of reinforced carbon-carbon composite nanotools using a nanotube (CNTs) covered by an amorphous carbon matrix (shell); the CNT tip protruded and remained uncoated to preserve apex size. Unsuitable properties such as flexibility and vibration could be controlled without deteriorating the CNT size, strength, and resilience. Nanomanipulation experiments and molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study the mechanical response of these composite beams under bending efforts. AFM probes based on these C-C composite high aspect ratio tips generated excellent image resolution and showed no degradation after acquiring several hundred (400) images.

Laboratory facilities and methods are presented for the determination of ultra-low levels of mercury (Hg) in ice and snow samples originating from polar ice caps or temperate regions. Special emphasis will be given to the presentation of the clean laboratory and the cleaning procedures. The laboratory is pressurized with air filtered through high efficiency particle filters. This first filtration is not enough to get rid of contamination by Hg in air. Experiments are conducted in a clean bench, especially built for Hg analysis, equipped with both particle filter and activated charcoal filter. It allows to obtain very low levels of atmospheric Hg contamination. Ultrapure water is produced for cleaning all the plastic containers that will be used for ice and snow samples and also for the dilution of the standards. Hg content in laboratory water is about 0.08+/-0.02 pg/g. A Teflon system has been developed for the determination of Hg in ice and snow samples based on Hg(II) reduction to Hg(0) with a SnCl2/HNO3 solution followed by the measurement of gaseous Hg(0) with a Hg analyzer GARDIS 1A+ based on the Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy method. Blank determination is discussed.
