RESUMO

Pelvic pain is a common gynaecological complaint, sometimes without any obvious etiology. We report a case of pelvic congestion syndrome, an often overlooked cause of pelvic pain, diagnosed by helical computed tomography. This seems to be an effective and noninvasive imaging modality.

RESUMO

Immediately after Röntgen's discovery, people started trying to find uses for the new rays in gynecology and obstetrics. Although the first reports date from 1896-97, even in the 1920's there were textbooks to be found without any mention of the use of radiology in both areas of medicine. The availability of reliable contrast media led to the development of new imaging techniques and to the golden age of obstetrical and gynecological radiology in the 1930-1970 period. Nowadays ultrasound has replaced most conventional techniques while MRI is becoming more and more important. A historical overview of the different radiological techniques is provided.

RESUMO

Atherosclerotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta is a frequent finding in a general hospital patient population. Most complications such as rupture, thrombosis and superinfection are well known. We report on a patient with aortocaval fistulization. This rare complication was diagnosed on contrast enhanced computed tomography. Pathological correlation was obtained as attempted surgery was unsuccessful.

RESUMO

A self-expandable stent was used to obtain prolonged relief of stridor resulting from tracheal obstruction by extrinsic tumour compression despite prior external irradiation. The stent was inserted in an easy and comfortable procedure with fibreoptic bronchoscopy under local anaesthesia.

RESUMO

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. The main characteristics on plain X-rays are a lytic destruction in the metaphyseal region of the long bones followed by progressive sclerosis. The symmetrical pattern and the frequent involvement of the sternoclavicular joints and vertebrae are typical. An association with palmoplantar pustulosis has also been described. Laboratory findings are nonspecific. Although MRI is not necessary to make the diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis, it is useful in assessing the extent and the evolution of the lesions. CRMO of the tibial and fibular bones is described in a 14-year-old girl, who suffered from pain and soft tissue swelling in both ankles. Initial plain X-rays and laboratory findings were normal. After relapsing clinically, progressive sclerosis of both fibular bones occurred. Lytic lesions in the left tibia and both fibular bones were visible. Scintigraphic examination showed pathologic tracer accumulation in both legs. The diagnosis of CRMO was suggested based on CT and MRI findings. CRMO was confirmed after curettage and bone biopsy. Histopathological findings were consistent with active chronic osteomyelitis.

RESUMO

A variety of intracranial tumours other than metastases may present as multiple lesions. The differentiation between them can mostly be made on their clinical signs and CT-MRI appearance. Nevertheless biopsy must be performed if the space-occupying lesions remain unclassifiable.

RESUMO

A case of alkaline encrusting cystitis is presented, with unusual but characteristic calcifications on plain x-rays and computed tomography. These disappeared completely after adequate treatment.

RESUMO

The CT features of cerebellar lesions with von Hippel-Lindau's disease are analyzed. The use of CT scanning for associated spinal hemangioblastomas is discussed in the light of a case with a low cervical lesion. The role of computed tomography in the neuroradiological investigations is discussed.

RESUMO

Bilateral visual impairment, associated with amenorrhea, diabetes insipidus and mental deterioration were observed in a 28 year old woman. CT scan revealed bilateral symmetrical infiltrative processes surrounding the ventricular system, which was confirmed by postmortem examination. Histologically the lesion was a germinoma.
