RESUMO

The strength of metals and alloys at elevated temperatures typically decreases due to the recovery, recrystallization, grain growth, and growth of second-phase particles. We report here a cold-worked Cu-Al2O3 composite did not recrystallize up to a temperature of 0.83Tm of Cu. The composite was manufactured through the internal oxidation process of dilute Cu-0.15 wt.% Al alloy and was characterized by transmission electron microscopy to study the nature of oxide precipitates. As a result of internal oxidation, a small volume fraction (1%) of Al2O3 particles forms. In addition, a high density of extremely fine (2-5 nm) Cu2O particles has been observed to form epitaxially within the elongated Cu grains. These finely dispersed second-phase Cu2O particles enhance the Zener drag significantly by three orders of magnitude as compared to Al2O3 particles and retain their original size and spacing at elevated temperatures. This limits the grain boundary migration and the nucleation of defect-free regions of different orientations and inhibits the recrystallization process at elevated temperatures. In addition, due to the limited grain boundary migration, a bundle of stacking faults appears instead of annealing twins. This investigation has led to a better understanding of how to prevent the recrystallization process of heavily deformed metallic material containing oxide particles.

RESUMO

Electrical switching of ferroelectric domains and subsequent domain wall motion promotes strong piezoelectric activity, however, light scatters at refractive index discontinuities such as those found at domain wall boundaries. Thus, simultaneously achieving large piezoelectric effect and high optical transmissivity is generally deemed infeasible. Here, it is demonstrated that the ferroelectric domains in perovskite Pb(In1/2 Nb1/2 )O3 -Pb(Mg1/3 Nb2/3 )O3 -PbTiO3 domain-engineered crystals can be manipulated by electrical field and mechanical stress to reversibly and repeatably, with small hysteresis, transform the opaque polydomain structure into a highly transparent monodomain state. This control of optical properties can be achieved at very low electric fields (less than 1.5 kV cm-1 ) and is accompanied by a large (>10 000 pm V-1 ) piezoelectric coefficient that is superior to linear state-of-the-art materials by a factor of three or more. The coexistence of tunable optical transmissivity and high piezoelectricity paves the way for a new class of photonic devices.

RESUMO

Sensors containing metal-carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid materials as the active sensing layer were demonstrated for ethanol vapor detection at room temperature. The metal-CNT hybrid materials were synthesized by infiltrating single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with the transition metals Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd or Pt. Each sensor was prepared by drop-casting dilute dispersions of a metal-CNT hybrid onto quartz substrate electrodes and the impedimetric responses to varying ethanol concentration were recorded. Upon exposure to ethanol vapor, the ac impedance (Z') of the sensors was found to decrease to different extents. The sensor containing pristine CNT material was virtually non-responsive at low ethanol concentrations (<50 ppm). In contrast, all metal-CNT hybrid sensors showed extremely high sensitivity to trace ethanol levels with 100-fold or more gains in sensitivity relative to the starting SWNT sensor. All hybrid sensors, with the exception of Ni filled CNT, exhibited significantly larger sensor responses to ethanol vapor up to 250 ppm compared to the starting SWNT sensor.
