INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of noninvasive respiratory monitors for patients outside of critical care settings. The Linshom respiratory monitoring device is a novel temperature-based respiratory monitor that measures the respiratory rate as accurately as capnography. OBJECTIVES: Determine whether the amplitude of the Linshom temperature profile was an accurate, surrogate and qualitative metric of the tidal volume (VT ) that tracks VT in healthy volunteers. METHODS: Forty volunteers breathed room air spontaneously through a tight-fitting continuous positive airway pressure mask with a Linshom device mounted in the mask. VT was measured contemporaneously using a standalone Maquet Servo-i ICU ventilator. The amplitudes of the Linshom temperature profiles were paired with the contemporaneous VT measurements using least squares linear regression analysis and the coefficient of variation (R2 ) was determined. RESULTS: Forty volunteers completed the study. The data from 30 of the volunteers were analysed and are presented; data from 10 volunteers were not included due to protocol violations and/or technical issues unrelated to Linshom. The fluctuations in the amplitude of the Linshom temperature profiles mapped closely with the measured VT using least squares linear regression analyses yielding a mean R2 (95% CI) value of 0.87 (0.84-0.90). CONCLUSION: These results support the notion that the Linshom temperature profile is an accurate and reliable surrogate that tracks changes in VT in healthy volunteers. Further studies are warranted in patients in clinical settings to establish the effectiveness of this monitor.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether 2.0 mm cancellous screws are superior to 2.0 mm cortical screws when inserted into cancellous and bicortical bone. STUDY DESIGN: Biomechanical study. METHODS: The 2.0 mm cancellous screws and 2.0 mm cortical screws were inserted according to the recommended guidelines in synthetic cancellous and bicortical blocks. Fifteen screw-block constructs per group were tested to failure in axial pullout. Axial pullout strength and yield strength were calculated. Data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The 2.0 mm cortical screws achieved lower axial pullout strength than 2.0 mm cancellous screws in cancellous blocks. The 2.0 mm cortical screws achieved greater pullout strength than 2.0 mm cancellous screws in bicortical blocks. CONCLUSION: The 2.0 mm cancellous screws may offer a biomechanical advantage in bone with thin cortices (<1 mm thick), whereas 2.0 mm cortical screws may be preferred in cortical bone with cortices measuring at least 1 mm in thickness.

PURPOSE: We sought to develop a temperature-based respiratory instrument to measure respiration noninvasively outside critical care settings. METHOD: Respiratory temperature profiles were recorded using a temperature-based noninvasive instrument comprised of three rapid responding medical-grade thermistors-two in close proximity to the mouth/nose (sensors) and one remote to the airway (reference). The effect of the gas flow rate on the amplitude of the tracings was determined. The temperature-based instrument, the Linshom Respiratory Monitoring Device (LRMD) was mounted to a face mask and positioned on a mannequin face. Respiratory rates of 5-40 breaths·min(-1) were then delivered to the mannequin face in random order using artificial bellows (IngMar Lung Model). Data from the sensors were collected and compared with the bellows rates using least squares linear regression and coefficient of determination. The investigators breathed at fixed rates of 0-60 breaths·min(-1) in synchrony with a metronome as their respiratory temperature profiles were recorded from sensors mounted to either a face mask or nasal prongs. The recordings were compared with a contemporaneously recorded sidestream capnogram from a CARESCAPE GEB450 Monitor. The extracted respiratory rates from the LRMD tracings and capnograms were compared using linear regression with a coefficient of determination and a Bland-Altman plot. RESULTS: The amplitude of the sensor tracings was independent of the oxygen flow rate. Respiratory rates from the new temperature-based sensor were synchronous and correlated identically with both the artificial bellows (r(2) = 0.9997) and the capnometer mounted to both the face mask and nasal prongs (r(2) = 0.99; bias = -0.17; 95% confidence interval, -2.15 to 1.8). CONCLUSIONS: Respiratory rates using the LRMD, a novel temperature-based respiratory instrument, were consistent with those using capnometry.


RéSUMé: OBJECTIF: Nous avons tenté de mettre au point un instrument respiratoire se fondant sur la température afin de mesurer la respiration de façon non invasive en dehors des unités de soins critiques. MéTHODE: Les profils de température respiratoire ont été enregistrés à l'aide d'un instrument non invasif se fondant sur la température et composé de trois thermistances de qualité médicale à réponse rapide ­ deux à proximité de la bouche et du nez (capteurs) et un troisième à l'écart des voies aériennes (référence). L'effet du débit gazeux sur l'amplitude des tracés a été déterminé. L'instrument fondé sur la température, nommément le dispositif de monitorage respiratoire Linshom (LRMD), a été fixé à un masque facial et positionné sur le visage d'un mannequin. Des fréquences respiratoires de 5-40 respirations·min−1 ont ensuite été livrées au visage du mannequin dans un ordre aléatoire à l'aide de soufflets artificiels (modèle de poumon IngMar). Mites associated with subcortical beetles feed and reproduce within habitats transformed by tree-killing herbivores. Mites lack the ability to independently disperse among these habitats, and thus have evolved characteristics that facilitate using insects as transport between resources. Studies on associations between mites and beetles have historically been beetle-centric, where an assemblage of mite species is characterized on a single beetle species. However, available evidence suggests there may be substantial overlap among mite species on various species of beetles utilizing similar host trees. We assessed the mite communities of multiple beetle species attracted to baited funnel traps in Pinus stands in southern Wisconsin, northern Arizona, and northern Georgia to better characterize mite dispersal and the formation of mite-beetle phoretic associations at multiple scales. We identified approximately 21 mite species totaling 10,575 individuals on 36 beetle species totaling 983 beetles. Of the mites collected, 97% were represented by eight species. Many species of mites were common across beetle species, likely owing to these beetles' common association with trees in the genus Pinus. Most mite species were found on at least three beetle species. Histiostoma spp., Iponemus confusus Lindquist, Histiogaster arborsignis Woodring and Trichouropoda australis Hirschmann were each found on at least seven species of beetles. While beetles had largely similar mite membership, the abundances of individual mite species were highly variable among beetle species within each sampling region. Phoretic mite communities also varied within beetle species between regions, notably for Ips pini (Say) and Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff).

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old castrated male Yorkshire Terrier was evaluated because of a 1-month history of inspiratory dyspnea that began 2.5 years after placement of extraluminal tracheal ring prostheses for tracheal collapse. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination revealed severe inspiratory dyspnea. Cervicothoracic radiography revealed a soft tissue opacity within the lumen of the cervical portion of the trachea at approximately the level of the fifth cervical vertebra. Tracheobronchoscopy revealed 2 prosthetic rings protruding into the tracheal lumen. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The dog was anesthetized, and the 2 protruding tracheal ring prostheses were removed via separate tracheotomies. Tracheoscopy was performed after surgery, and a third prosthetic ring that was found freely floating within the tracheal lumen was removed with an endoscopic grasping forceps. The dog recovered without complications. Dyspnea resolved within the first 2 weeks after surgery. Follow-up examination performed 6 months after surgery revealed that the dog was breathing normally, with no dyspnea or coughing reported by the owner. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Migration of extraluminal tracheal ring prostheses should be included in the differential diagnoses for any dog with dyspnea or persistent coughing after surgical correction of cervical tracheal collapse. Surgical removal of the protruding prosthetic rings, without provision of additional tracheal support, was a viable treatment option in this case.

Dutch elm disease (DED) is a destructive vascular wilt disease of elm (Ulmus) trees caused by the introduced Ascomycete fungus Ophiostoma novo-ulmi. In Europe, this DED pathogen is transmitted by elm bark beetles in the genus Scolytus. These insects carry phoretic mites to new, suitable habitats. The aim of this study was to record and quantify conidia and ascospores of O. novo-ulmi on phoretic mites on the three elm bark beetle species Scolytus multistriatus, Scolytus pygmaeus, and Scolytus scolytus. Spores of O. novo-ulmi were found on four of the ten mite species phoretic on Scolytus spp. These included Elattoma fraxini, Proctolaelaps scolyti, Pseudotarsonemoides eccoptogasteri, and Tarsonemus crassus. All four species had spores attached externally to their body surfaces. However, T. crassus carried most spores within its sporothecae, two paired pocket-like structures adapted for fungal transmission. Individuals of Pr. scolyti also had O. novo-ulmi conidia and ascospores frequently in their digestive system, where they may remain viable. While E. fraxini and P. eccoptogasteri rarely had spores attached to their bodies, large portions of Pr. scolyti and T. crassus carried significant numbers of conidia and/or ascospores of O. novo-ulmi. P. scolyti and T. crassus, which likely are fungivores, may thus contribute to the transmission of O. novo-ulmi, by increasing the spore loads of individual Scolytus beetles during their maturation feeding on twigs of healthy elm trees, enhancing the chance for successful infection with the pathogen. Only S. scolytus, which is the most efficient vector of O. novo-ulmi in Europe, carried high numbers of Pr. scolyti and T. crassus, in contrast to S. multistriatus and S. pygmaeus, which are known as less efficient vectors. The high efficiency of S. scolytus in spreading Dutch elm disease may be partly due to its association with these two mites and the hyperphoretic spores of O. novo-ulmi they carry.

The spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis, is an eruptive forest pest of significant economic and ecological importance. D. rufipennis has symbiotic associations with a number of microorganisms, especially the ophiostomatoid fungus Leptographium abietinum. The nature of this interaction is only partially understood. Additionally, mite and nematode associates can mediate bark beetle-fungal interactions, but this has not yet been studied for spruce beetles. In this study, we found eight mite species associated with spruce beetles: Tarsonemus ips, T. endophloeus, Histiogaster arborsignis, Dendrolaelaps quadrisetus, Proctolaelaps hytricoides, Trichouropoda alascae, T. n. sp. nr dalarenaensis, and Urobovella n. sp 767. The most prevalent species was H. arborsignis. In addition, 75% of beetles examined carried nematodes, with six species represented. These included a new species of Parasitorhabditis, Ektaphelenchus obtusus, Bursaphelenchus n. sp. 727, Aphelenchoides n. sp., Panagrolaimus sp., and Mykoletzkya ruminis. H. arborsignis showed strong feeding and oviposition preferences for L. abietinum among four fungal species tested in laboratory assays. Information on our attempts to culture the various nematode species collected from D. rufipennis is also provided. Bursaphelenchus were cultured from D. rufipennis nematangia plated on agar containing L. abietinum but not sterile agar. Thus, L. abietinum plays an important role in these gallery communities, affecting the tree-killing bark beetle, its phoretic mites, and nematodes. These data add to our understanding of bark beetle-microorganism interactions.

The Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) is the first of a new generation of normal-incidence, two-optical-element spectroscopic instruments developed for space solar extreme-ultraviolet astronomy. The instrument is currently mounted on the Solar-B satellite for a planned launch in late 2006. The instrument observes in two spectral bands, 170-210 A and 250-290 A. The spectrograph geometry and grating prescription were optimized to obtain excellent imaging while still maintaining readily achievable physical and fabrication tolerances. A refined technique using low ruling density surrogate gratings and optical metrology was developed to align the instrument with visible light. Slit rasters of the solar surface are obtained by mechanically tilting the mirror. A slit exchange mechanism allows selection among four slits at the telescope focal plane. Each slit is precisely located at the focal plane. The spectrograph imaging performance was optically characterized in the laboratory. The resolution was measured using the Mg iii and Ne iii lines in the range of 171-200 A. The He ii line at 256 A and Ne iii lines were used in the range of 251-284 A. The measurements demonstrate an equivalent resolution of ~2 arc sec? on the solar surface, in good agreement with the predicted performance. We describe the EIS optics, mechanisms, and measured performance.

High incidences of red, itching, and painful welts on people in the midwestern United States led to the discovery of a European species of mite, Pyemotes herfsi (Oudemans) (Acari: Pyemotidae), preying on gall-making midge larvae on oak leaves. The mites' great reproductive potential, small size, and high capacity for dispersal by wind make them difficult to control or avoid.

Feedback from community interactions involving mutualisms are a rarely explored mechanism for generating complex population dynamics. We examined the effects of two linked mutualisms on the population dynamics of a beetle that exhibits outbreak dynamics. One mutualism involves an obligate association between the bark beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis and two mycangial fungi. The second mutualism involves Tarsonemus mites that are phoretic on D. frontalis ("commensal"), and a blue-staining fungus, Ophiostoma minus. The presence of O. minus reduces beetle larval survival ("antagonistic") by outcompeting beetle-mutualistic fungi within trees yet supports mite populations by acting as a nutritional mutualist. These linked interactions potentially create an interaction system with the form of an endogenous negative feedback loop. We address four hypotheses: (1) Direct negative feedback: Beetles directly increase the abundance of O. minus, which reduces per capita reproduction of beetles. (2) Indirect negative feedback: Beetles indirectly increase mite abundance, which increases O. minus, which decreases beetle reproduction. (3) The effect of O. minus on beetles depends on mites, but mite abundance is independent of beetle abundance. (4) The effect of O. minus on beetles is independent of beetle and mite abundance. High Tarsonemus and O. minus abundances were strongly correlated with the decline and eventual local extinction of beetle populations. Manipulation experiments revealed strong negative effects of O. minus on beetles, but falsified the hypothesis that horizontal transmission of O. minus generates negative feedback. Surveys of beetle populations revealed that reproductive rates of Tarsonemus, O. minus, and beetles covaried in a manner consistent with strong indirect interactions between organisms. Co-occurrence of mutualisms embedded within a community may have stabilizing effects if both mutualisms limit each other. However, delays and/or non-linearities in the interaction systems may result in large population fluctuations.
