RESUMO

The alterations in feed ingredients and the nutrient matrix to produce reduced-protein diets may affect bone morphology and mineralization in laying hens. This study was implemented to determine the effects of L-arginine (Arg), guanidinoacetic acid (GAA), and L-citrulline (Cit) supplementation to Arg-deficient reduced-protein diets on bone morphology, strength, and mineralization status of laying hens. Individually housed Hy-Line Brown laying hens were evenly distributed to five dietary treatments with 25 replicates per treatment from 20 to 40 wk of age. Treatments consisted of a standard protein diet (17% crude protein, SP), a reduced-protein diet deficient in Arg (13% crude protein, RP), and RP supplemented with Arg (0.35% Arg, RP-Arg), GAA (0.46% GAA equivalent to 0.35% Arg, RP-GAA), or Cit (0.35% Cit equivalent to 0.35% Arg, RP-Cit) to reach the Arg level of SP diets. Birds fed the SP diet had similar bone weight, ash, length, width, Seedor index, breaking strength, and serum mineral concentration, but higher toe B level (P < 0.001) compared to those fed the RP diet at wk 40. Birds fed the SP diet consumed more but also excreted more K and B compared to those fed the RP diet (P < 0.01). Birds fed the SP diet had lower Cu digestibility (P = 0.01) and higher B retention (P < 0.01) compared to those offered the RP diet. Supplementation of Arg, GAA, and Cit to the RP diet increased relative femur weight and length (P < 0.001). Citrulline supplementation also increased relative tibia and femur ash, and Zn digestibility (P < 0.05). Supplementation of GAA to the RP diet decreased serum Ca, P, and Mg levels, decreased tibia Fe and Mg levels and toe Mg level, but increased Al, Fe, Zn, and Mn digestibility (P < 0.05). The current findings demonstrated the capacity of laying hens to adapt to low mineral intake by increasing mineral utilization. Overall, bone morphology and breaking strength, and serum mineral level in laying hens were not influenced by dietary CP levels. Dietary Arg, GAA, or Cit supplementation were effective in improving bone morphology and mineralization in laying hens fed Arg-deficient RP diets.

The consequences of feeding broiler chickens with reduced protein (RP) diets for gut health and barrier function are not well understood. This study was performed to elucidate the effect of reducing dietary protein and source of protein on gut health and performance parameters. Four experimental diets included 2 control diets with standard protein levels either containing meat and bone meal (CMBM) or an all-vegetable diet (CVEG), a medium RP diet (17.5% in growers and 16.5% in finisher), and a severe RP diet (15.6% in grower and 14.6% in finisher). Off-sex Ross 308 birds were assigned to each of the 4 diets and performance measurements were taken from d 7 to 42 post-hatch. Each diet was replicated 8 times (10 birds per replicate). A challenge study was conducted on additional 96 broilers (24 birds per diet) from d 13 to 21. Half of the birds in each dietary treatment were challenged by dexamethasone (DEX) to induce a leaky gut. Feeding birds with RP diets decreased weight gain (P < 0.0001) and increased feed conversion ratio (P < 0.0001) from d 7 to 42 compared with control diets. There was no difference between CVEG and CMBM control diets for any parameter. The diet containing 15.6% protein increased (P < 0.05) intestinal permeability independent of the DEX challenge. Gene expression of claudin-3 was downregulated (P < 0.05) in birds fed 15.6% protein. There was a significant interaction between diet and DEX (P < 0.05) and both RP diets (17.5% and 15.6%) downregulated claudin-2 expression in DEX-challenged birds. The overall composition of the caecal microbiota was affected in birds fed 15.6% protein having a significantly lower richness of microbiota in both sham and DEX-injected birds. Proteobacteria was the main phylum driving the differences in birds fed 15.6% protein. At the family level, Bifidobacteriaceae, Unclassified Bifidobacteriales, Enterococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Lachnospiraceae were the main taxa in birds fed 15.6% protein. Despite supplementation of synthetic amino acids, severe reduction of dietary protein compromised performance and intestinal health parameters in broilers, evidenced by differential mRNA expression of tight junction proteins, higher permeability, and changes in caecal microbiota composition.

There is renewed interest in utilizing food waste as animal feed due to its potential benefits in reducing feed cost and environmental impact while improving global food security. This study was conducted to examine the efficacy of recycled food waste-based feed for laying hen performance, egg quality, and nutrient digestibility. Hy-Line Brown hens (n = 150) were randomly distributed to three dietary treatments with 50 replicate cages of a single bird per treatment from 24 to 43 weeks of age. The treatments were: a standard/control feed based on wheat, sorghum, and soybean meal; a recycled food waste based-feed; and a 50:50 blend of control and food waste based-feed. Hens offered the food waste-based diets had similar egg weight, hen day egg production, and egg mass, but lower feed intake and higher feed efficiency, compared to those fed the control diets (P < 0.001). Hens fed the food waste diets exhibited lower shell breaking strength and shell thickness at week 34, and higher yolk color score and higher fat digestibility compared to the control treatment at week 43 (P < 0.001). Thus, feeding the recycled food waste based-feed maintained egg production while improving feed efficiency compared to the control feed.

The present study evaluated the impacts of fibre-degrading enzymes on the profiles of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and oligosaccharides (OS) in the ileum of broiler chickens offered wheat- or maize-based diets under subclinical necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge. A 2 × 2 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments was used. Factors were the following: NE challenge, no or yes; diet type, wheat- or maize-based; and supplemental enzymes, control (no enzyme), family 10 xylanase (XYN10), family 11 xylanase (XYN11) or ß-mannanase (MAN). Birds in the challenged group were inoculated with Eimeria on d 9 and Clostridium perfringens on d 14 and 15. A 3-way interaction (P = 0.047) occurred on overall (d 0 to 16) weight gain. When NE was present, all the supplemental enzymes increased weight gain in birds fed the wheat-based diet; whereas in those fed the maize-based diet supplemental XYN10 and XYN11 decreased weight gain. When NE was absent, birds fed the wheat-based diet supplemented with XYN10 or MAN presented increased weight gain compared to non-supplemented birds, but no improvements with enzyme addition were observed in birds fed the maize-based diet. A 3-way interaction (P = 0.002) was observed on insoluble NSP level in the ileum. When NE was absent, all the supplemental enzymes reduced the ileal level of insoluble NSP, regardless of diet type. In the challenged birds, supplementing XYN10 and MAN reduced insoluble NSP level in the ileum, but only in birds fed the wheat-based diet. Ileal soluble NSP level was reduced by supplemental XYN11 and MAN, but only in birds fed the wheat-based diet, resulting in a 2-way diet type × enzyme interaction (P < 0.001). Ileal OS arabinose (P = 0.030) level was highest in birds offered the wheat-based diet supplemented with XYN11. Collectively, supplementation of NSP-degrading enzymes to the wheat-based diet enhanced bird performance regardless of NE challenge, with XYN11 significantly increasing oligosaccharide release. However, enzyme addition did not improve growth performance in birds fed maize-based diet, with supplemental XYN10 and XYN11 impeding weight gain when NE was present.

The present study investigated whether supplementing fibre-degrading enzymes can ameliorate the severity of subclinical necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens offered wheat- or maize-based diets. A total of 1,544 mixed-sex broiler chickens were assigned to 16 experimental treatments as a 2 × 2 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments. The factors were the following: NE challenge, yes or no; diet type, wheat- or maize-based; and enzyme supplementation, control (no enzyme), family 10 xylanase (XYN10), family 11 xylanase (XYN11) or ß-mannanase (MAN). Each treatment was replicated 6 times, with 16 birds per replicate pen. A three-way challenge × diet type × enzyme interaction occurred for body weight at 21 d of age (P = 0.025) and overall feed conversion ratio (P = 0.001). In the non-challenged birds fed the wheat-based diet, supplementing MAN increased d 21 body weight compared to the control. In challenged birds fed the maize-based diet, supplemental XYN11 impeded body weight and overall FCR compared to the control. Birds offered the maize-based diet presented heavier relative gizzard weights at both 16 and 21 d of age (P < 0.001) and reduced liveability (P = 0.046) compared to those fed the wheat-based diet. Enzyme supplementation reduced ileal and jejunal digesta viscosity at 16 d of age only in birds fed the wheat-based diet (P < 0.001). XYN11 increased ileal digesta viscosity in birds fed the maize-based diet, and MAN reduced it in birds fed the wheat-based diet at 21 d of age (P = 0.030). Supplementing XYN11 improved ileal soluble non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) digestibility in birds fed the wheat-based diet compared to non-supplemented birds (P < 0.001). Birds fed the wheat-based diet displayed a higher abundance of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Enterobacteriaceae and butyric acid in the caeca at 16 d of age compared to birds fed the maize-based diet (P < 0.05). In conclusion, supplemental XYN11 exacerbated the negative impact of NE on growth performance in birds fed the maize-based diet. Supplementing wheat-based diets with fibre-degrading enzymes ameliorates production losses induced by NE.

The present study characterised the types and amounts of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) remaining undigested along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of broiler chickens offered a typical wheat- or maize-based diet. One-day old Cobb 500 mixed-sex chicks were assigned to 24 pens, with 10 birds/pen and 12 pens/treatment. Birds were offered the experimental diets in 3 phases (starter, day 0 to 10; grower, day 11 to 24 and finisher, day 25 to 35). Excreta and digesta samples from the crop, gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and caeca were collected at 12 and 35 days of age, and analysed for the NSP flow. The wheat-based diet contained higher levels of soluble NSP than the maize-based diet, whereas insoluble NSP levels were similar between the 2 diets. Detailed analysis of NSP constituents revealed that arabinoxylans were the primary NSP in the wheat-based diet, mostly in insoluble form. Pectins were the predominant NSP in the maize-based diet, followed by arabinoxylans. Overall, birds offered the wheat-based diet presented higher levels of soluble NSP remaining in all gut sections compared to birds offered the maize-based diet, at both 12 and 35 days of age (P < 0.050). Accumulation of insoluble NSP in the gizzard was noted in birds fed both diets, but was more pronounced in birds offered the maize-based diet compared to the wheat-based diet, at both 12 and 35 days of age (P < 0.001). The present study highlights marked differences in the amounts and types of NSP delivered to the different gut sections when feeding wheat-compared to maize-based diets, particularly in the gizzard and the lower GIT of birds.

An experiment was conducted to explore the effects of digestible amino acid (dAA) concentrations and supplemental protease on live performance and energy partitioning in broilers. Ross 308 male broilers (n = 288) were distributed into 24 floor pens and offered 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 6 replicates from 1 to 35 d of age. Dietary treatments consisted of a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with dAA concentrations (standard and reduced [34 g/kg below standard]) and supplemental protease (without or with) as the main factors. At 1, 15, 28, and 35 d of age, feed and broilers were weighed to determine live performance. From 20 to 23 d of age, a total of 32 birds (2 birds/chamber, 4 replicates) were placed in closed-calorimeter chambers to determine respiratory exchange (heat production, HP), apparent metabolisable energy (AME), retained energy (RE), and net energy (NE). From 29 to 35 d of age, supplemental protease in the reduced-dAA diet decreased broiler feed conversion ratio (FCR) by 5.6 points, whereas protease supplementation in the standard-dAA diet increased FCR by 5.8 points. The indirect calorimetry assay revealed that supplemental protease decreased (P < 0.05) the heat increment of feed (HIF) by 0.22 MJ/kg. Also, from 20 to 23 d of age, broilers offered the reduced-dAA diet with supplemental protease had a higher daily body weight gain (BWG) (+10.4%), N intake (+7.1%), and N retention (+8.2%) than those offered the standard-dAA with supplemental protease. Broilers offered the reduced-dAA without supplemental protease exhibited a 3.6% higher AME-to-crude protein (CP) ratio than those offered other treatments. Protease supplementation in the standard- and reduced-dAA diets resulted in 2.7% and 5.6% lower AME intake-to-N retention ratios, respectively, compared with the unsupplemented controls. Reduced-dAA increased (P < 0.05) AME intake (+4.8%), RE (+9.8%), NE intake (+5.8%), NE intake-to-CP ratio (+3.0%), and RE fat-to-RE ratio (+8.6%). Protease supplementation increased (P < 0.05) respiratory quotient (+1.2%) and N retention-to-N intake ratio (+2.2%), NE-to-AME ratio (+1.9%), and reduced HP (-3.6%), heat increment (-7.4%), and NE intake-to-N retention (-2.5%). In conclusion, protease positively affected FCR and energy partitioning in broilers; responses were most apparent in diets with reduced-dAA concentrations.

Abnormally low or high levels of trace elements in poultry diets may elicit health problems associated with deficiency and toxicity, and impact poultry growth. The optimal supplement pattern of trace mineral also impacts the digestion and absorption in the body. For ducks, the limited knowledge of trace element requirements puzzled duck production. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of dietary inclusions of coated and uncoated trace minerals on duck growth performance, tissue mineral deposition, serum antioxidant status, and intestinal microbiota profile. A total of 1,080 14-day-old Cherry Valley male ducks were randomly divided into six dietary treatment groups in a 2 (uncoated or coated trace minerals) × 3 (300, 500, or 1,000 mg/kg supplementation levels) factorial design. Each treatment was replicated 12 times (15 birds per replicate). Coated trace minerals significantly improved average daily gain (p < 0.05), increased Zn, Se, and Fe content of serum, liver, and muscle, increased serum antioxidant enzyme (p < 0.05) and decreased the excreta Fe, Zn, and Cu concentrations. Inclusions of 500 mg/kg of coated trace minerals had a similar effect on serum trace minerals and tissue metal ion deposition as the 1,000 mg/kg inorganic trace minerals. Higher concentrations of Lactobacillus, Sphaerochatea, Butyricimonas, and Enterococcus were found in birds fed with coated trace minerals. In conclusion, diets supplemented with coated trace minerals could reduce the risk of environmental contamination from excreted minerals without affecting performance. Furthermore, coated trace minerals may improve the bioavailability of metal ions and the colonization of probiotic microbiota to protect microbial barriers and maintain gut health.

Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is the direct precursor of creatine and can spare arginine (Arg) for creatine synthesis in low crude protein (CP) broiler diets. This study aimed to determine the extent GAA could spare Arg in broilers offered low CP diets and if supplemental betaine provides additional benefits. Seven hundred twenty-day-old Ross 308 male broilers were assigned into 9 dietary treatments with 8 replicates of 10 birds each. The treatments were; normal CP diet, a low CP (-15 g/kg) diet deficient in Arg, a low CP diet sufficient in Arg, and low CP diets with GAA, where 0.1% added L-Arg was spared by GAA at 50, 100, and 150% with and without 0.1% betaine. The treatments were offered during grower (d 10-24) and finisher (d 25-42) phases. The birds offered a low CP Arg deficient diet had 7.8% lower weight gain, 10 points higher FCR, 8.5% lower breast meat yield, 27.2% lower breast meat creatine concentration and 30.4% more abdominal fat pad compared to those offered a normal CP diet. When Arg was added back to the Arg deficient diet, growth performance, breast meat yield and creatine concentration loss were restored. When GAA spared Arg at 150%, feed intake, weight gain, FCR, breast and abdominal fat yields, breast meat moisture, drip loss, and breast meat creatine concentration became comparable to Arg sufficient low CP and normal CP treatments. When GAA spared Arg at 100 and 50%, FCR was 3 and 5 points lower than the normal CP treatment. Breast meat creatine concentration was positively correlated to feed efficiency (r = 0.70, P < 0.001) and breast meat moisture (r = 0.33, P < 0.01), and negatively correlated to relative weight of abdominal fat (r = -0.37, P < 0.01) and breast meat pH (r = -0.49, P < 0.001). There were no benefits of adding betaine with GAA on the parameters measured but the results with GAA were consistent in the presence or absence of betaine.

Inorganic trace minerals may exacerbate lipid peroxidation, thereby impacting lipid metabolism. This study aimed to compare the effects of inorganic and coated trace minerals in diets with different fat sources, on the performance, slaughter characteristics, and antioxidant status of broiler chickens. A total of 576 21-day-old Abor Acres broiler birds were randomly divided into four dietary treatment groups in a 2 (non-coated and coated trace minerals)×2 (soybean oil and lard) factorial design. Each treatment was replicated 12 times (12 birds per replicate). The results showed that coated minerals significantly improved the average daily gain (ADG) in weight and the feed conversion ratio (P<0.01), increased serum iron, zinc, selenium, and thyroxine contents, increased the activities of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, and lipoprotein lipase (P<0.05), and decreased the serum and muscle malondialdehyde (MDA) contents (P<0.01). The use of soybean oil as the fat source resulted in a high ADG in weight, a low F/G ratio, reduced serum MDA content, and drip loss of breast and leg muscles (P<0.05). In conclusion, the supplementation of coated trace minerals improved growth performance, antioxidant status, trace mineral retention within serum, and lipid metabolism. Additionally, soybean oil also improved the growth performance, antioxidant performance, and meat quality of broilers. The combination of coated trace minerals and soybean oil generated the best growth performance, antioxidant status, and meat quality characteristics.

This study was to characterise the undigested nutrients present along the gastrointestinal tract of birds offered common wheat- or maize-based diets, with the goal of optimising utilisation of enzymes to enhance digestive efficiency. Wheat- and maize-based diets were offered to 240 mixed-sex broilers (10 birds/pen; n = 12) from 1 to 35 d post-hatch. Digestibility of dry matter, starch, crude protein and non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) were measured in the crop, gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caeca and excreta at d 12 and 35 post-hatch. Analysis of nutrient levels in the excreta presented that more than 30% of nutrients provided in the feed was wasted, irrespective of wheat or maize diet type. On average, 92 g/kg crude protein, 92 g/kg insoluble NSP and 14 g/kg oligosaccharides were not utilised by birds at d 12 post-hatch. The quantity of water-insoluble NSP in the small intestine at d 12 was lower in birds offered the wheat-based diet compared to those fed the maize-based diet (P < 0.05), with the reverse being true for water-soluble NSP (P < 0.001). On average, 84 g/kg crude protein, 79 g/kg insoluble NSP and 9 g/kg oligosaccharides remained in the excreta at 35 d of age. At this time period, accumulation of feed in the gizzard was noted for birds offered both diets, but was more pronounced in those offered the maize-based diet (P < 0.001). Birds offered the maize-based diet demonstrated improved utilisation of oligosaccharides compared to those fed the wheat-based diet at both d 12 and 35 (P = 0.087 and P = 0.047, respectively). Protein utilisation in the jejunum and ileum was greater in birds offered the wheat-based diet compared to those fed the maize-based diet (P = 0.004 and P < 0.001, respectively). Thus, while both diets supported standard growth performance of birds, the degree and flow of nutrient disappearance along the gastrointestinal tract was influenced by cereal type and bird age.

In this study the starch digestion rates in broiler chickens from 18 samples of 5 commonly used feed grains (sorghum, wheat, maize, barley, triticale) were determined. The methodology to determine starch digestion rates in poultry is detailed herein. Starch digestion rates were not significantly different (P = 0.128) across the 18 feed grains, which reflects the wide variations that were observed within a given feedstuff. Nevertheless, starch digestion rates in broiler chickens offered wheat-based diets were significantly more rapid by 56.0% (0.117 versus 0.075 min-1; P = 0.012) than their sorghum-based counterparts on the basis of a pair-wise comparison. In descending order, the following starch digestion rates were observed: wheat (0.117 min-1), barley (0.104 min-1), triticale (0.093 min-1), maize (0.086 min-1), sorghum (0.075 min-1). The implications of these findings are discussed as they almost certainly have implications for poultry nutrition and the development of reduced crude protein diets for broiler chickens.

Broiler chickens grow rapidly, and their nutrient requirements change daily. However, broilers are fed three to five diet phases, meaning nutrients are under or oversupplied throughout production. Increasing diet phases improves production efficiency as there is less time in the production cycle that nutrients are in under or over-supply. Nevertheless, the process of administering four or more diets is costly and often impractical. New technologies are now available to blend feed to match the daily nutrient requirements of broilers. Thus, the aim of this review is to evaluate previous studies measuring the impact of increasing feed phases on nutrient utilisation and growth performance, and review recent studies taking this concept to the extreme; precision nutrition - feeding a new diet for each day of the production cycle. This review will also discuss how modern precision feeding technologies have been utilised and the potential that new technologies may bring to the poultry industry. The development of a precision nutrition regime which targets daily requirements by blending dietary components on farm is anticipated to improve the efficiency of production, reduce production cost and therefore improve sustainability of the industry. There is also potential for precision feeding technology along with precision nutrition strategies to deliver a plethora of other management and economic benefits. These include increased fluidity to cope with sudden environmental or market changes, and the ability to alter diets on a farm by farm level in a large, integrated operation. Thus, the future possibilities and practical implications for such technologies to generate a paradigm shift in feed formulation within the poultry industry to meet the rising demand for animal protein is also discussed.

This study determined the variations in protein digestibilities and digestion rates in broiler chickens offered diets containing 7 different meat and bone meals (MBM). A total of 252 male Ross 308 broiler chickens were offered 7 atypical diets largely based on maize and MBM from 24 to 28 d post-hatch. Each experimental diet was offered to 6 replicates with 6 birds per replicate cage. Excreta were collected in their entirety from 25 to 27 d post-hatch and on 28 d post-hatch. Digesta samples were collected from the proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, proximal ileum and distal ileum. Apparent digestibilities of protein were determined in each segment and apparent digestibilities of amino acids were measured in the distal ileum. There were significant differences in apparent protein digestibility coefficients in the proximal jejunum (P = 0.006), where broiler chickens offered the high ash beef meal (diet 7) generated the lowest protein digestibility in the proximal jejunum (0.318). Similarly, there were significant differences in apparent digestibility coefficients in the distal jejunum (P < 0.001) and distal ileum (P < 0.001) but not in the proximal ileum. More pronounced differences were found in the disappearance rate of protein and there were significant differences in all 4 segments of the small intestine (P < 0.001). Broiler chickens offered the high ash beef meal had the lowest protein disappearance rate (P < 0.001). No difference was observed in the predicted protein digestion rate (P = 0.486) but chickens offered the high ash beef meal had the lowest potential digestible protein (0.662, P = 0.034) whereas the highest potential digestible protein (0.739) was detected in diet 5 (containing a beef meal). This study contributed to the establishment of a preliminary database to include digestion rates of starch and protein into practical diet formulation.

Twelve minerals were screened to identify key dietary minerals important for Penaeus monodon growth. The minerals selected included boron, calcium plus phosphorus (assessed in tandem at a 1:1 ratio), cobalt, copper, magnesium, manganese, potassium, selenium, sodium, strontium and zinc. Twelve purified casein/gelatin-based diets were formulated and contained minerals at two levels: below expected requirements, as attributed by the basal formulation (-) and above expected requirements by adding inorganic minerals (+). The two levels were allocated to dietary treatments in juvenile prawns in accordance with the PB design. A two-level screening analysis was employed where effect of each mineral at level - or + across twelve diets were compared to identify the minerals of importance for culture performance of juvenile prawns. Calcium plus phosphorus (at a 1:1 ratio), magnesium, boron, manganese, selenium and zinc produced the greatest positive effects on weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, biomass gain and nutrient/energy retention. Particularly, boron and manganese significantly increased retention of key macronutrients and energy including gross energy, crude protein and crude lipid. Our study demonstrates the importance of several macro and trace minerals in prawn diets and the pressing need to refine their requirements for P. monodon.

A total of 294 male, off-sex Ross 308 chickens were offered 7 dietary treatments with crude protein (CP) contents of 210, 195, 180, and 165 g/kg. One of the four 165 g/kg diet was consistent with the higher protein diets and 3 were modified to investigate the effects of increased methionine levels, pre-pellet inclusion of whole maize, and whey protein concentrate in reduced-CP broiler diets. There were 7 replicate cages, 6 birds per cage, from 14 to 35 D post-hatch. The average feed conversion ratio (FCR) of birds offered 210, 195, 180 g/kg CP diets was 1.555 which was superior (P < 0.05) to the 1.608 FCR of their 165 g/kg counterparts. The transition from 210 to 165 g/kg (diet 4) CP diets linearly increased (P < 0.001) relative fat-pad weights from 8.64 to 14.62 g/kg. The same transition linearly increased jejunal and ileal starch digestibility coefficients (P < 0.001), metabolizable to gross energy ratios (ME:GE) ratios (P < 0.001) and nitrogen (N)-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) (P = 0.001) but did not influence N retention. Starch:protein disappearance rate ratios increased linearly (P < 0.001) from 2.68 to 3.82 in the jejunum and from 1.76 to 2.94 in the ileum following dietary CP reductions. Ileal disappearance rate ratios were quadratically related to FCR (r = 0.486; P < 0.005) and linearly related to relative fat-pad weights (r = 0.663; P < 0.001) where both parameters were disadvantaged by widening ratios. The transition from 210 to 165 g/kg crude protein diets linearly increased the average digestibility coefficient of 17 amino acids from 0.459 to 0.594 in jejunum and from 0.744 to 0.790 in the ileum. The present study demonstrates that dietary CP can be reduced from 210 to 180 g/kg without negatively influencing broiler performance but the further reduction to 165 g/kg compromised FCR. However, the three modifications to the 165 g/kg CP diet failed to enhance broiler performance.

The crude protein (CP) content of 4 iso-energetic, maize-based diets containing 11.00 g/kg digestible lysine was reduced in gradations from 200 to 156 g/kg with increasing inclusions of synthetic, or unbound, essential amino acids. A constant dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) of 230 mEq/kg was maintained, but a second 156 g/kg CP diet had a DEB of 120 mEq/kg, and energy densities of the 156 g/kg CP diet were reduced in the sixth and seventh treatments. Each of the 7 dietary treatments were offered to 7 replicate cages (6 birds/cage) or a total of 294 Ross 308 off-sex male broilers from 14 to 35 D posthatch. Reductions in CP from 200 to 156 g/kg did not influence weight gain but quadratically increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) and linearly increased relative abdominal fat-pad weights and feed intakes. The reduction in DEB did not influence growth performance but did adversely influence some amino acid digestibilities. Reducing energy density by 100 kcal/kg did not influence growth performance of birds offered the 156 g/kg CP diet but numerically reduced fat-pad weights. The transition from 200 to 156 g/kg CP diets generally enhanced jejunal and ileal amino acid digestibility coefficients but had diverse effects on free amino acid concentrations in systemic plasma with a remarkable 116% increase in threonine. Starch:protein disappearance rate ratios linearly increased in the jejunum and the ileum following the same transition, and these expanding ratios were related to heavier fat-pads and compromised FCR. This study indicates that reductions in dietary CP from 200 to 172 g/kg supported by inclusions of unbound essential amino acids do not compromise growth performance, but a further reduction to 156 g/kg CP significantly increased FCR. Both heavier relative fat-pad weights and inferior FCR were related to expanding starch:protein disappearance rate ratios, which suggests condensed dietary starch:protein ratios may advantage birds offered reduced CP diets.

BACKGROUND: The reduction of crude protein levels in diets for broiler chickens may generate economic, environmental and flock welfare and health benefits; however, performance is usually compromised. Whole grain feeding and phytase may improve the utilization of reduced crude protein diets. RESULTS: The effects of pre-pellet cracked maize (0, 15% and 30%) and phytase (0, 750 and 1500 FTU/kg) in iso-energetic maize-soy diets with three levels of crude protein (22%, 19.5% and 17%) were evaluated via a Box-Behnken response surface design. Each of 13 dietary treatments were offered to 6 replicate cages (6 birds/cage) of male Ross 308 broiler chicks from 7 to 28 d post-hatch. Model prediction and response surface plots were generated from experimental data via polynomial regression in R and only significant coefficients were included and discussed in the predicted models. Weight gain, feed intake and FCR were all influenced by pre-pellet cracked maize, phytase and crude protein level, where crude protein level had the greatest influence. Consequently, the reduction from 22% to 17% dietary crude protein in non-supplemented diets reduced weight gain, feed intake, relative gizzard weight, relative gizzard content and relative pancreas weight but improved FCR. However, the inclusion of 30% cracked maize to 17% crude protein diets restored gizzard weight and 1500 FTU phytase inclusion to 17% crude protein diets increased relative gizzard contents and pancreas weights. Cracked maize and phytase inclusion in tandem to 17% crude protein diets increased weight gain, feed intake and FCR; however, this FCR was still more efficient than broilers offered the non-supplemented 22% crude protein diet. Broilers offered the pre-pellet cracked maize and phytase inclusions reduced AME in 22% crude protein diets but improved AME by 2.92 MJ (14.16 versus 11.24 MJ; P < 0.001) in diets containing 17% crude protein. Ileal N digestibility was greater in broilers offered diets with 17% crude protein than those offered the 22% crude protein diet; irrespective of phytase and pre-pellet cracked maize. CONCLUSION: Pre-pellet cracked maize and phytase inclusions will improve the performance of broilers offered reduced crude protein diets.

Off-sex, male Ross 308 chickens were offered maize-soy diets without and with 3.5 g/kg lysine monohydrochloride (HCl), which contained 10.0 or 12.8 g/kg digestible lysine, from 7 to 28 D post-hatch. Birds were permitted access to diets at intervals of 12, 16, and 20 h/day. Lysine HCl improved weight gain (1,465 vs. 1,417 g/bird; P < 0.025) and feed conversion ratios (1.351 vs. 1.382; P < 0.005). Extending feed access intervals increased weight gain (1,542 vs. 1,303 g/bird; P < 0.001) and feed intake (2,142 vs. 1,748 g/bird; P < 0.001) but compromised feed conversion ratios (1.390 vs. 1.342; P < 0.001). Extending feed access intervals increased (P < 0.001) both relative crop and gizzard weights and amounts of digesta retained in these organs. Effective lysine HCl utilization in poultry irrespective of feeding frequency, as opposed to pigs, may stem from anticipatory feeding behavior, crop and gizzard functionality, and increased episodes of reverse peristalsis. Collectively, these properties appear to modulate the relative intestinal uptakes of unbound lysine and protein-bound amino acids including lysine. Instructively, extending daily feed access intervals from 12 to 20 h increased average ileal digestibility coefficients of 16 amino acids by 12.8% (0.830 vs. 0.736; P < 0.001), which was linearly related (r = -0.834; P < 0.001) to hourly feed intake rates. Birds given 12 h feed access consumed relatively more feed on an hourly basis and this may have contributed to lesser amino acid digestibilities. As treatment interactions (P > 0.35) between lysine HCl and feed access intervals for parameters of growth performance were not observed, it was concluded that feed access intervals do not influence lysine utilization. The implications of these findings are discussed.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in carbohydrate and protein nutrition to enhance the efficiency of animal production. Reduced-crude protein diets depress environmental pollution and feeding cost, but the challenge to their adoption is maintaining digestive function and growth performance of birds. The present study was conducted to evaluate the influence of different dietary starch sources and protein levels on intestinal functionality and mucosal amino acid catabolism. METHODS: Six dietary treatments, based on maize and soybean meal, were offered to 360 AA+ male chicks from 6 to 35 d post-hatch as a 3 × 2 factorial array. Either waxy rice or amylose was added to a conventional maize-soy diet to provide three sources of starch with different digestion rates and relatively high and low dietary protein levels. Growth performance, parameters of intestinal functionality and concentrations of free amino acid in the portal circulation were determined. RESULTS: In the grower phase, starch source influenced (P < 0.02) weight gain as diets containing amylose supported significantly higher weight gains than waxy rice. Significant increase of ileal ATP concentrations and Na+/K+-ATPase activity were found in amylose treatment. Also, amylose decreased BrdU positive cell numbers and down-regulated mRNA expression for CASP-3. GOT activity in the ileum was higher (P < 0.01) in birds offered low protein diets and there was a trend (P = 0.057) for waxy rice as a starch source to increase ileal GOT activities. There was a significant influence on the concentration of seventeen amino acids in the portal circulation with tryptophan the one exception. Waxy rice as a starch source generated 13.6% and 22.4% numerically higher concentrations of non-essential amino acids than maize and amylose, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Amino acid catabolism in the gut mucosa is subject to nutritional regulation. Given that amino acids can be spared from catabolism in the gut mucosa by supplementation of amylose, it follows their post-enteral availability would be improved and intestinal energy would be derived more efficiently from glucose.
