Importance: Adolescent sleep problems are prevalent, particularly among racial and ethnic minority groups, and can increase morbidity. Despite the numerous strengths of their racial and ethnic group, urban American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents face significant health disparities but are rarely included in health research. Understanding how sleep problems are associated with health outcomes among American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents may elucidate novel targets for interventions to promote health equity. Objective: To assess whether baseline sleep problems are associated with changes in behavioral and cardiometabolic health outcomes among urban American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents 2 years later. Design, Setting, and Participants: American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents were recruited via flyers and community events for an observational cohort study in California. Baseline assessments were conducted among 142 adolescents from March 1, 2018, to March 31, 2020, and follow-ups were conducted among 114 adolescents from December 1, 2020, to June 30, 2022. Exposures: Baseline actigraphy-assessed sleep duration and efficiency and self-reported sleep disturbances and social jet lag (absolute value of the difference in sleep midpoint on weekends vs weekdays; indicator of circadian misalignment). Main Outcomes and Measures: Main outcome measures included self-reported depression (measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire), anxiety (measured using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale), past year alcohol and cannabis use, body mass index, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), waist circumference, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Analyses examined whether baseline sleep was associated with health outcomes at follow-up, controlling for age, sex, and baseline outcome measures. Results: The baseline sample included 142 urban American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents (mean [SD] age, 14.0 [1.4] years; 84 girls [59%]), 80% of whom (n = 114; mean [SD] age, 14.1 [1.3] years; 71 girls [62%]) completed follow-ups. Linear or logistic regressions showed significant negative associations between shorter sleep duration and depression (ß = -1.21 [95% CI, -2.19 to -0.24]), anxiety (ß = -0.89 [95% CI, -1.76 to -0.03]), DBP (ß = -2.03 [95% CI, -3.79 to -0.28]), and HbA1c level (ß = -0.15 [95% CI, -0.26 to -0.04]) and likelihood of alcohol (odds ratio [OR], 0.57 [95% CI, 0.36-0.91]) and cannabis use (full week: OR, 0.59 [95% CI, 0.35-0.99]) at follow-up. Greater social jet lag was associated with significantly higher SBP (ß = 0.06 [95% CI, 0.01-0.11]) at follow-up. Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study found significant associations between poor sleep and adverse changes in health outcomes. Findings highlight the importance of developing culturally responsive interventions that target sleep as a key modifiable risk factor to improve the health of American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents.

Alcohol use, which alters the epigenome, increases the probability that it could affect subsequent generations, even if they were never directly exposed to ethanol or even in utero. We explored the effects of parental ethanol exposure before conception on behavioral changes in the offspring. Considering the role of Monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) in dopamine turnover in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and its influence on behavior, and taking into account that ethanol exposure could alter MAO-B, we assessed the protein levels in the offspring. Male and female rats were exposed to ethanol for 30 days and then allowed ten days of abstinence. Afterward, they were mated with either control or ethanol-exposed rats. The F1 and F2 male offspring underwent tests to assess behavioral changes. Additionally, the levels of MAO-B in the PFC were evaluated. Results revealed that in the F1, anxiety increased only in the bi-parental ethanol-exposed male offspring in the elevated plus maze test (p < 0.05), while depressive-like behavior rose only in maternal and bi-parental ethanol-exposed offspring (p < 0.01). However, compulsive-like behavior increased in all ethanol-exposed offspring (p < 0.01). No significant phenotypic changes were observed in the F2. The levels of MAO-B in the PFC increased in the maternal (p < 0.05) and bi-parental ethanol-exposed offspring (p < 0.01). Our study demonstrates that parental ethanol exposure, even in the days preceding mating, adversely affects behaviors and induces molecular changes in the brain. Given these findings, it becomes imperative to monitor children exposed to parental (especially maternal) ethanol for the prevention of mental disorders.

Plant secondary metabolites (SMs) play a crucial role in shielding plants from pathogens and environmental stressors. These natural products find widespread applications across various industries, including pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, and healthcare. However, the quantity and quality of these compounds in plants can be influenced by factors such as genetics, morphology, plant age, and the seasonal and daily variations. The timing of harvest holds particular significance for medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) as their active compounds peak at a specific moment during the plant growth cycle. Determining the optimal harvest time is essential to ensure the plants meet their intended cultivation goal. In this review, we analyzed how developmental and external factors impact the qualitative and quantitative effectiveness of SMs in MAPs. We examined recent studies on the effects of environmental and developmental factors on SMs of MAPs, compiling relevant data for analysis. The results of this review demonstrate how these factors influence the quantity and quality of plant SMs, underscoring the importance of determining the optimal harvest time (known as the balsamic time) to maximize the utilization of these compounds. Our findings offer crucial insights into the factors affecting SMs, serving as a tool for quality control in MAPs production. Moreover, this review can be a valuable resource for researchers, farmers, and industrial users aiming to optimize plant growth and harvest timing for maximum yield. Overall, our review provides valuable information for devising effective strategies to produce high-quality MAPs products.

A highly efficient fluorescent sensor (S-DAC) was easily created by functionalizing the SBA-15 surface with N-(2-Aminoethyl)-3-Aminopropyltrimethoxysilane followed by the covalent attachment of 7-diethylamino 3-acetyl coumarin (DAC). This chemosensor (S-DAC) demonstrates selective and sensitive recognition of Fe3+ and Hg2+ in water-based solutions, with detection limits of 0.28 × 10-9 M and 0.2 × 10-9 M for Hg2+ and Fe3+, respectively. The sensor's fluorescence characteristics were examined in the presence of various metal ions, revealing a decrease in fluorescence intensity upon adding Fe3+ or Hg2+ ions at an emission wavelength of 400 nm. This sensor was also able to detect ferric and mercury ions in spinach and tuna fish. The quenching mechanism of S-DAC was investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy, which confirmed a static-type mechanism for fluorescence quenching. Moreovre, the decrease in fluorescence intensity caused by mercury and ferric ions can be reversed using trisodium citrate dihydrate and EDTA as masking agents, respectively. As a result, a circuit logic gate was designed using Hg2+, Fe3+, trisodium citrate dihydrate, and EDTA as inputs and the quenched fluorescence emission as the output.

Background: Concomitant inflammation may boost the cardiovascular complications in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Omega-3 fatty acids may have certain health benefits in HD patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on hematocrit (HCT), hemoglobin (HB) level and platelet (PLT) counts of HD patients. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted on HD patients at a private dialysis center in Rasht, Iran. Three omega-3 fatty acid supplement capsules (3 g/d) were administered daily for two months to patients in the intervention group (n = 55). The control group (n = 60) were given three placebo capsules containing medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, similar to the supplemental dose of the intervention group at the same period. Three parameters of HCT, HB and PLT were measured at baseline and after the intervention. Results: The PLT count decreased in the intervention group compared to the control group (173.38 ± 74.76 vs. 227.68 ± 86.58 103/mm3, F = 4.83, P = 0.03). No significant change was found on the levels of HCT and HB parameters between the two groups after the intervention. Conclusion: Omega-3 supplementation in HD patients may decrease the risk of forming blood clots in the blood vessels. Further studies are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Having competence in initiating sexual interactions is one of the challenges of sexual health in any society. Given that the social, cultural, and religious background of some societies can prevent the acquisition of sexual competence in young women, this study will be done to design, implement, and determine the effectiveness of an intervention program to improve the sexual competence of young women on the eve of marriage. METHODS: The current research is a mixed-method study in a qualitative-quantitative sequence. In the first phase, a qualitative study will be conducted to explore the needs of sexual competence in young adult women about to get married and ways to improve it. Then, after the literature review and combining it with the results of the qualitative study, a draft of the intervention program will be developed. After reviewing the content of the program and validating it in the panel of experts, the final program will be developed. In the second phase, the effect of the program to promote the sexual competence of adult women about to get married will be determined in a quantitative study with a two-group quasi-experimental method. DISCUSSION: Providing a comprehensive and practical intervention program to promote sexual competence based on cultural, social, and religious background can help to improve the quality of sexual interactions of young women about to get married, reduce harm caused by lack of sexual competence, and ensure women's sexual health.


Preparing young people to start safe and satisfactory sexual behaviors and as a result to acquire sexual competence can play an important role in ensuring their sexual health. But in some countries, talking about sexual issues is a cultural and religious taboo. Given that Lack of sexual competence is associated with negative consequences, the present study aims to design, implement, and determine the effectiveness of a program to promote sexual competence in young adult women who are about to get married. In the first phase, to identify the needs of acquiring sexual competence and to explore the strategies for improving sexual competence, a qualitative study will be conducted with a content analysis approach. Individual interviews will be conducted with women aged 18 to 25 about to get married, the teachers of pre-marriage classes, midwives, gynecologists, reproductive health specialists, psychiatrists, and psychologists who work in the field of sexual health. Based on the findings of this phase and after reviewing the literature, an intervention program to improve sexual competence in young adult women will be designed and prepared. After the experts approve the intervention program, in the second phase, a quantitative study will be conducted to determine the effect of the intervention program on improving the sexual competence of young adult women about to get married.

To increase the effectiveness of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus vaccines (MRSA), a new generation of immune system stimulating adjuvants is necessary, along with other adjuvants. In some vaccines, monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA) as a toll-like receptor 4 agonist is currently used as an adjuvant or co-adjuvant. MPLA could increase the immune response and vaccine immunogenicity. The current investigation assessed the immunogenicity and anti-MRSA efficacy of recombinant autolysin formulated in MPLA and Alum as co-adjuvant/adjuvant. r-Autolysin was expressed and purified by Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and characterized by SDS-PAGE. Then, the vaccine candidate formulation in MPLAs and Alum was prepared. To investigate the immunogenic responses, total IgG, isotype (IgG1 and IgG2a) levels, and cytokines (IL-4, IL-12, TNF-α, and IFN-γ) profiles were evaluated by ELISA. Also, the bacterial burden in internal organs, opsonophagocytosis, survival rate, and pathobiology changes was compared among the groups. Results demonstrated that mice immunized with the r-Autolysin + Alum + MPLA Synthetic and r-Autolysin + Alum + MPLA Biologic led to increased levels of opsonic antibodies, IgG1, IgG2a isotype as well as increased levels of cytokines profiles, as compared with other experimental groups. More importantly, mice immunized with MPLA and r-Autolysin exhibited a decrease in mortality and bacterial burden, as compared with the control group. The highest level of survival was seen in the r-Autolysin + Alum + MPLA Synthetic group. We concluded that both MPLA forms, synthetic and biological, are reliable candidates for immune response improvement against MRSA infection.

Several preclinical and clinical studies indicate that exposure to acute stress may decrease pain perception and increases pain tolerance. This phenomenon is called stress-induced analgesia (SIA). A variety of neurotransmitters, including dopamine, is involved in the SIA. Dopaminergic neurons in the mesolimbic circuits, originating from the ventral tegmental area (VTA), play a crucial role in various motivational, rewarding, and pain events. The present study aimed to investigate the modulatory role of VTA dopaminergic receptors in the antinociceptive responses evoked by forced swim stress (FSS) in a model of acute pain. One hundred-five adult male albino Wistar rats were subjected to stereotaxic surgery for implanting a unilateral cannula into the VTA. After one week of recovery, separate groups of animals were given different doses of SCH23390 and Sulpiride (0.25, 1, and 4 µg/0.3 µl) as D1- and D2-like receptor antagonists into the VTA, respectively. Then, the animals were exposed to FSS for a 6-min period, and the pain threshold was measured using the tail-flick test over a 60-min time set intervals. Results indicated that exposure to FSS produces a prominent antinociceptive response, diminishing by blocking both dopamine receptors in the VTA. Nonetheless, the effect of a D1-like dopamine receptor antagonist on FSS-induced analgesia was more prominent than that of a D2-like dopamine receptor antagonist. The results demonstrated that VTA dopaminergic receptors contribute to the pain process in stressful situations, and it might be provided a practical approach to designing new therapeutic agents for pain management.

Repeated use of methamphetamine (METH) causes severe effects on the central nervous system, associated with an increased relapse rate. The orexinergic system is highly implicated in the reward circuitry and may be a promising target for treating psychostimulant dependency. The present study aimed to investigate the involvement of the orexin system, mainly the orexin-2 receptors (OX2R) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the extinction and reinstatement of METH-seeking behavior using a conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. To this end, animals received METH (1 mg/kg; sc) for a 5-day conditioning period. Then, in the first set of experiments, different groups of rats were given intra-VTA TCS OX2 29 (1, 3, 10, or 30 nmol/0.3 µl DMSO) as an OX2R antagonist over a 10-day extinction period. In another experiment, after the extinction period, a different set of animals received a single dose of TCS OX2 29 (1, 3, 10, or 30 nmol) before the priming dose of METH (0.25 mg/kg; sc) on the reinstatement day. The results revealed that TCS OX2 29 (10 and 30 nmol) remarkably facilitated the extinction of rewarding properties of METH (P < 0.001 for both doses). Furthermore, TCS OX2 29 (3, 10, or 30 nmol) significantly suppressed the METH-induced reinstatement (3 nmol; P < 0.05, 10 nmol; P < 0.01, and 30 nmol; P < 0.001). In conclusion, the current study revealed that the orexinergic system, specifically the VTA OX2R, is involved in METH-seeking behaviors and that manipulation of this system can be considered a potential therapeutics in treating METH dependency.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between neighborhood social environment and sleep among urban American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adolescents as well as the moderating role of cultural factors in this association. METHOD: The analytic sample included 133 urban AI/AN adolescents (age 12-16, 57.1% female, Mage = 14.03, SDage = 1.35). Perceived neighborhood social environment included safety and cohesion. Cultural factors included AI/AN cultural identification and historical loss. Sleep duration, efficiency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO) were measured via actigraphy. Sleep disturbance was measured via a questionnaire. RESULTS: Greater neighborhood safety was significantly associated with lower sleep disturbance (b = -2.17, SE = 0.8, p = .008), higher sleep efficiency (b = 1.75, SE = 0.64, p = .006), and lower WASO (b = -8.60, SE = 3.34, p = .01). Neighborhood cohesion was not associated with any sleep outcomes. Cultural factors moderated the association between neighborhood social environment and sleep outcomes (p < .05). Specifically, both neighborhood safety and cohesion were associated with lower sleep disturbance, only among individuals reporting higher levels of AI/AN cultural identification. Further, neighborhood safety was associated with greater sleep efficiency and lower WASO (i.e., better sleep) only among adolescents with higher contemplation of historical loss. CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the importance of considering cultural factors in addressing sleep and health disparities. AI/AN cultural identification and a sense of historical loss may be important targets for identifying adolescents who might benefit the most from policies and interventions focused on improving the social environment in order to improve sleep and other health outcomes. AIM: Amnesia is a cognitive disorder that may lead to memory loss. Caffeine is a psychoactive substance which have an effect on memory and cognitive functions. This study aimed to assess the association of transient global amnesia (TGA) with dietary intake of caffeine. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the Sabzevar Persian cohort data of 258 patients with TGA and 520 healthy individuals in Sabzevar, Iran. The Nutritional data were gathered in face-to-face interviews using a valid Food Frequency Questionnaire. Different models of logistic regression were used to determine the association between TGA and dietary caffeine intake after adjusting the confounders including age, sex, education, job, marital status, physical activity, BMI, and calorie intake. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in terms of dietary calorie intake of (2279.5 ± 757.9 vs. 2365.5 ± 799.5, p = 0.19), protein (70.79 ± 25.27 vs. 72.94 ± 24.83, p = 0.31), fat (59.97 ± 23.79 vs. 60.13 ± 26.38, p = 0.93), carbohydrate (376 ± 134 vs. 393.1 ± 137.8, p = 0.14), and caffeine (196.4 ± 127.9 vs. 186.3 ± 128.5, p = 0.36) between the groups. No significant association was found between TGA and dietary intake of caffeine (OR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.99-1.01, p = 0.36). The results did not change after adjusting the confounders. CONCLUSIONS: No significant association was found between TGA and dietary intake of caffeine. Further prospective studies are required to confirm this finding.

Objectives: Several lines of research have shown that hepatic fibrosis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Trans-chalcone is a flavonoid precursor with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study was conducted to examine the antifibrotic properties of trans-chalcone on bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced liver cholestasis in rats. Materials and Methods: Following the BDL operation, trans-chalcone at doses of 12, 24, and 50 mg/kg was administered orally once a day for 45 consecutive days. Serum levels of liver indices, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total and direct bilirubin, and lipid profile in addition to blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, were measured. Additionally, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were assessed in liver homogenates. Histopathological evaluations were performed using Masson trichrome (MT) and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Results: The elevated levels of liver enzymes, total and direct bilirubin, BUN, creatinine, cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) induced by BDL were significantly reduced following trans-chalcone administration; while serum level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) increased. Besides, treatment with trans-chalcone elevated the activities of CAT and SOD in the liver tissues of the animals with BDL surgery. According to MT and H&E staining, BDL-induced histopathological changes, including infiltration of inflammatory cells, hepatocyte necrosis, ductal hyperplasia, and collagen deposition were ameliorated using trans-chalcone administration. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the present study that trans-chalcone, possibly by its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, may exert hepatoprotective and antifibrotic effects in BDL-induced liver fibrosis.

Targeting the orexin system has recently been identified as one of the promising options for treating drug addiction. It may be more feasible and achievable if we investigate the accurate function of the orexin system in brain areas implicated in reward and addiction, such as the ventral tegmental area (VTA) by animal reward models. This study investigated the contribution of the orexin system, mainly the orexin-1 receptors (OX1R) in the VTA, in the extinction and reinstatement of methamphetamine (METH) related memories in the conditioned place preference (CPP) model. Animals after the acquisition of METH place preference were subjected to two separate sets of extinction and reinstatement experiments to receive various concentrations of selective OX1R antagonist, SB334867 into the bilateral VTA before extinction sessions (1, 3, and 10 nmol/0.3 µl DMSO per side) or only on the reinstatement phase (3, 10, and 30 nmol/0.3 µl DMSO per side), respectively. Intra-VTA infusion of SB334867 throughout the extinction phase could remarkably facilitate the extinction process and decrease the maintenance of reinforcing effects of METH at the highest dosage (10 nmol; p < 0.0001). Data also indicated a single microinfusion of SB334867 into the VTA before reinstatement of the METH-seeking behavior could considerably prevent the relapse of previously formed reward-context memories (10 nmol; p < 0.01 and 30 nmol; p < 0.001). The present study provided evidence supporting the potential therapeutic effects of the orexin system modulation, specifically in the VTA, on different stages of METH-induced place preference.

Studies establish that the brain's Orexin system is involved in pain modulation. Orexin-1 and orexin-2 receptors (OX1 and OX2r, respectively) are essential in responsiveness to stressful stimuli. Some evidence indicates that the hippocampus's dentate gyrus (DG) potentially modulates pain and stress. The present study examined the involvement of OX1 and OX2 receptors within the DG in response to acute pain after exposure to forced swim stress (FSS). Five to seven days post-stereotaxic surgery, the baseline tail-flick latency (TFL) was taken from the animal, then rats unilaterally received through an implanted cannula either different doses of OX1r antagonist (SB334867; 1, 3, 10, and 30 nmol), OX2r antagonist (TCS OX2 29; 1, 3, 10 and 30 nmol), or vehicle (0.5 µl solution of 12% DMSO). After 5 min, rats were exposed to the FSS for six minutes. Subsequently, the tail-flick test was conducted, and the TFLs were measured at the 60-min time set intervals. Results indicated that FSS produces antinociceptive responses in the tail-flick test. Two-way ANOVA analysis showed that Microinjection of OX1r and OX2r antagonists into the DG region of the brain reduced FSS-induced analgesia in the tail-flick test. The decrement effects of these two antagonists were almost the same. Additionally, results showed that the role of both receptors was the same in modulating stress-induced analgesia (SIA). These findings show that the orexin system in the hippocampal DG region might be partially involved in the SIA in acute pain.

Objective: Having cosmetic breast implants increases a woman's chance of suicide, which is now a global challenge. This systematic review evaluated the possible risk of suicide among women who undergo cosmetic breast implants. Method : This meta-analysis was done based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). In the current systematic review and meta-analysis, we systematically searched for all articles written in both English or Persian that estimated the prevalence of suicidal ideation in women who had cosmetic breast implants. We systematically searched different databases, including MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane, Library ProQuest, Scopus, and Google Scholar, from inception to March 2021. There was also a search for references. Suicidal ideation, a suicide plan, or suicide attempts were the outcomes. In order to determine the total pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation, we utilized a random-effects model. To examine the risks of bias in each study, we applied the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal method. Results: We identified 218 citations in our initial search. After omitting duplicated citations and excluding irrelevant studies according to the title and abstract selection, 42 studies were chosen for the full text analysis. Finally, 11 research, examining a total of 324,332 women were incorporated into the systematic review and critical appraisal assessment. Eight of these studies were found to be eligible for meta-analysis. The frequency of suicide in women with cosmetic breast implant was 0.2% (95% CI: 0.1% to 0.4%; P < 0.001) (Q-value: 168.143, I2:95.83). Most of the included studies had moderate quality. Conclusion: There might be a correlation between cosmetic breast implants and suicide risk, which could be stronger in the presence of a history of mental illnesses. The evidence about the possible effects of breast implants on the risk of suicide is still inconclusive, and there is a need for future well-designed studies on this topic.

Background: The role of the hematologic indicators in the identification of severe or critical patients requires further investigation. In this study, we focused on predicting Covid-19 patients at risk of progression using blood parameters. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective study including 444 patients with confirmed Covid-19. Hematological parameters were evaluated. The logistic regression analysis was performed with step-wise method with dependent variables such as intensive care units admission, partial pressure of oxygen saturation, and mortality. Also, independent variables such as hematological parameters, age and sex to assess variables that are likely to predict patients at risk of progression. Results: Patients in intensive care units had significantly higher mean absolute neutrophil count than outpatients (P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference in the mean absolute lymphocyte count between dead and survived patients (P = 0.015). Multivariate analysis confirmed the positive association of the white blood cells (P < 0.001), absolute neutrophil count (P < 0.004), red cell distribution width (P < 0.001), and lactate dehydrogenase (P = 0.007) to be positively associated with the admission of Covid-19 patients in the intensive care units and the absolute monocyte count (P = 0.012, Odds ratios = 0.100, CI95% = 0.066-0.605) to be negatively associated with mortality. Conclusion: Based on the results of our study, it is recommended to use hematological data to make clinical decisions and evaluate the patient's prognosis.

Recently, the design and fabrication of bio-inspired superhydrophobic materials using natural lipid additives such as beeswax (BW) have aroused great attention in food packaging as they can minimize the transfer rate of water molecules and have effective moisture barriers. This review discusses the recent progress in the design and fabrication of BW-containing edible films/coatings (e.g., emulsion and blend films, bilayer materials, bionanocomposites, and antimicrobial materials) and their potential applications on the postharvest life and quality attributes of various fruits. Incorporation of BW into polysaccharides- and proteins-based emulsion films effectively improved their hydrophobicity, water vapor, and UV/visible light barrier properties, as well as the film tensile properties. The addition of nanoparticles to BW-based polymeric matrices often results in improved physico-mechanical properties. BW coatings have been also applied to prolong the shelf-life of various climacteric fruits, however, optimization of the wax concentration can be further investigated to develop targeted food storage systems.

BACKGROUND: Based on the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of hydrazone and phthalimide, a new series of hybrid hydrazone and phthalimide pharmacophores was prepared and evaluated as analgesic agents. METHODS: The designed ligands were synthesized by reaction of the appropriate aldehydes and 2- aminophthalimide. Analgesic, cyclooxygenase inhibitory, and cytostatic activity of prepared compounds were measured. RESULTS: All the tested ligands demonstrated significant analgesic activity. Moreover, compounds 3i and 3h were the most potent ligands in the formalin and writhing tests, respectively. Compounds 3g, 3j, and 3l were the most COX-2 selective ligands and ligand 3e was the most potent COX inhibitor with a 0.79 of COX-2 selectivity ratio. The presence of electron-withdrawing moieties with hydrogen bonding ability at the meta position was found to affect the selectivity efficiently, in which compounds 3g, 3l, and 3k showed high COX-2 selectivity, and compound 3k was the most potent one. The cytostatic activity of selected ligands demonstrated that compounds 3e, 3f, 3h, 3k, and 3m showed good analgesic and COX inhibitory activity and were less toxic than the reference drug. CONCLUSION: High therapeutic index of these ligands is one of the valuable advantages of these compounds.

BACKGROUND: Affective states are important aspects of healthy functioning; as such, monitoring and understanding affect is necessary for the assessment and treatment of mood-based disorders. Recent advancements in wearable technologies have increased the use of such tools in detecting and accurately estimating mental states (eg, affect, mood, and stress), offering comprehensive and continuous monitoring of individuals over time. OBJECTIVE: Previous attempts to model an individual's mental state relied on subjective measurements or the inclusion of only a few objective monitoring modalities (eg, smartphones). This study aims to investigate the capacity of monitoring affect using fully objective measurements. We conducted a comparatively long-term (12-month) study with a holistic sampling of participants' moods, including 20 affective states. METHODS: Longitudinal physiological data (eg, sleep and heart rate), as well as daily assessments of affect, were collected using 3 modalities (ie, smartphone, watch, and ring) from 20 college students over a year. We examined the difference between the distributions of data collected from each modality along with the differences between their rates of missingness. Out of the 20 participants, 7 provided us with 200 or more days' worth of data, and we used this for our predictive modeling setup. Distributions of positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) among the 7 selected participants were observed. For predictive modeling, we assessed the performance of different machine learning models, including random forests (RFs), support vector machines (SVMs), multilayer perceptron (MLP), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN). We also investigated the capability of each modality in predicting mood and the most important features of PA and NA RF models. RESULTS: RF was the best-performing model in our analysis and performed mood and stress (nervousness) prediction with ~81% and ~72% accuracy, respectively. PA models resulted in better performance compared to NA. The order of the most important modalities in predicting PA and NA was the smart ring, phone, and watch, respectively. SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations) analysis showed that sleep and activity-related features were the most impactful in predicting PA and NA. CONCLUSIONS: Generic machine learning-based affect prediction models, trained with population data, outperform existing methods, which use the individual's historical information. Our findings indicated that our mood prediction method outperformed the existing methods. Additionally, we found that sleep and activity level were the most important features for predicting next-day PA and NA, respectively.

It has been declared that dopamine receptors within the hippocampal formation are involved in emotion, memory, and pain processing. Remarkably, both CA1 and dentate gyrus (DG) areas of the hippocampal formation are involved in persistent peripheral nociceptive perception. A prior study showed that dopamine receptors within the hippocampal DG have a critical role in antinociception induced by forced swim stress (FSS), as a physical stressor, in the presence of formalin irritation. The present experiments were designed to assess whether dopaminergic receptors within the CA1 have any role in antinociceptive responses induced by restraint stress (RS) as a psychological stressor after applying the formalin test as an animal model of persistent inflammatory pain. The D1- and D2-like dopamine receptor antagonists, SCH23390 and Sulpiride (0.25, 1, and 4 µg/0.5 µl), were injected into the CA1 areas of ninety-six male albino Wistar rats 5 min before a 3-h period of restraint stress. Ten min after stress termination, a 50-µl formalin 2.5 % was subcutaneously injected into the plantar surface of the rat's hind paw to induce persistent inflammatory pain. Nociceptive behaviors in both phases of the formalin test were analyzed in the 5-min blocks for a 60-min period. The obtained results demonstrate that although RS could induce an antinociceptive response in both phases of the formalin test, microinjection of D1- and D2-like dopamine receptors, antagonists attenuated RS-induced analgesia. These results support the hypothesis that acute restraint stress could induce analgesia via dopaminergic projection to the CA1 region of the hippocampal formation.
