RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was test the hypothesis that homeopathy (H) enhances the effects of scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 50 patients with CP were randomly allocated to one of two treatment groups: SRP (C-G) or SRP + H (H-G). Assessments were made at baseline and after 3 and 12 months of treatments. The local and systemic responses to the treatments were evaluated by clinical and serologic parameters, respectively. RESULTS: Both groups displayed significant improvements, however, using clinical attachment gain and reductions in HDL, LDL and Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Glucose and Uric acid, from baseline to 1 year, as criteria for treatment success, H-G performed significantly better than C-G. CONCLUSION: The findings of this 1-year follow-up randomized clinical trial suggest that homeopathic medicines, as an adjunctive to SRP, can provide significant local and systemic improvements for CP patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Homeopathic medicine (HM) in the treatment of Chronic Periodontitis (CP) aims to restore the vital energy balance of the patient allowing the body to heal itself. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the additional benefits of HM as an adjunctive to conventional periodontal treatment (CPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: After sample size calculation, sixty individuals of both genders, and ages varying between 35 and 70 years old, 40 with chronic periodontitis (CP group - CPG) and 20 without CP (Healthy Group - HG) participated in this "Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial". The CP patients were divided into two groups: one was submitted only to CPT (CP Control Group - CPT-C) and the other group was submitted to CPT and HM, according to the similia principle (CP Test Group - CPTT). Assessments were made at baseline and after 90 days of treatments. The local and systemic responses to the treatments were evaluated by clinical and laboratory parameters, respectively. Data were analyzed by parametric and nonparametric tests. The level of significance was 5%. RESULTS: At baseline, CP patients presented higher values of LDL cholesterol and blood glucose than HG individuals. After the treatment, all the systemic parameters evaluated decreased in CP patients, except LDL and HDL Cholesterol in CPT-C, and HDL Cholesterol in CPT-T. There was a statistical gain in clinical attachment level only in CPT-T (+0.51 mm) after 90 days; however, there was a reduction in probing depth, in the level of visible plaque and in the bleeding on probing, in both CP groups (CPT-C and CPT-T) after 90 days. CONCLUSION: The findings of this 3-month follow-up study concluded that H M, as an adjunctive to CPT, can provide additional benefits in the treatment of CP.

Thin-film polycrystalline semiconductors are currently at the forefront of inexpensive large-area solar cell and integrated circuit technologies because of their reduced processing and substrate selection constraints. Understanding the extent to which structural and electronic defects influence carrier transport in these materials is critical to controlling the optoelectronic properties, yet many measurement techniques are only capable of indirectly probing their effects. Here we apply a novel photoluminescence imaging technique to directly observe the low temperature diffusion of photocarriers through and across defect states in polycrystalline CdTe thin films. Our measurements show that an inhomogeneous distribution of localized defect states mediates long-range hole transport across multiple grain boundaries to locations exceeding 10 µm from the point of photogeneration. These results provide new insight into the key role deep trap states have in low temperature carrier transport in polycrystalline CdTe by revealing their propensity to act as networks for hopping conduction.

Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy was applied to the microelectrical characterizations of junctions in solar cell devices. Surface Fermi-level pinning effects on the surface potential measurement were avoided by applying a bias voltage (V(b)) to the device and taking the V(b)-induced potential and electric field changes. Two characterizations are presented: the first is a direct measurement of Bi-induced junction shift in GaInNAs(Bi) cells; the second is a junction-uniformity measurement in a-Si:H devices. In the first characterization, using Bi as a surfactant during the molecular beam epitaxy growth of GaInNAs(Bi) makes the epitaxial layer smoother. However, the electrical potential measurement exhibits a clear Bi-induced junction shift to the back side of the absorber layer, which results in significant device degradation. In the second characterization, the potential measurement reveals highly non-uniform electric field distributions across the n-i-p junction of a-Si:H devices; the electric field concentrates much more at both n/i and i/p interfaces than in the middle of the i-layer. This non-uniform electric field is due possibly to high defect concentrations at the interfaces. The potential measurements further showed a significant improvement in the electric field uniformity by depositing buffer layers at the interfaces, and this indeed improved the device performance.

RESUMO

The classic grain-boundary (GB) model concludes that GBs in polycrystalline semiconductors create deep levels that are extremely harmful to optoelectronic applications. However, our first-principles density-functional theory calculations reveal that, surprisingly, GBs in CuInSe2 (CIS) do not follow the classic GB model: GBs in CIS do not create deep levels due to the large atomic relaxation in GB regions. Thus, unlike the classic GB model, GBs in CIS are electrically benign, which explains the long-standing puzzling fact that polycrystalline CIS solar cells with remarkable efficiency can be achieved without deliberate GB passivation. This benign electrical character of GBs in CIS is confirmed by our scanning Kelvin probe microscopy measurements on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 chalcopyrite films.
