RESUMO

Many mechanical applications take advantage of spiral torsion springs due to their robustness, compactness, and simplicity. Brand-new manufacturing methods allow to create spiral springs with unconventional geometries and materials that suit a wider range of uses demanding either linearity or nonlinearity. Designing a spiral torsion spring with a nonlinear desired torque curve may be a great challenge, due to their many degrees-of-freedom (length, width, thickness, arbor, and barrel diameters, etc.) and the complexity of the geometrical and mechanical requirements to ensure their manufacturability, system compatibility, operation safety and reliability; and the solution is never unique. This manuscript proposes and validates an innovative methodology for the resolution of this inverse design problem based on the application of a nonlinear restrained global optimization algorithm. This algorithm is adjusted to converge, out of the infinity of designs that match the desired torque curve and hold all the functional and manufacturing constraints, to a design solution that minimizes strip mass. The methodology is built on a formulation for the calculation of the torque curve of a generalized spiral spring, with or without coiling and with any along-the-length cross-section, already published by the authors.

RESUMO

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a concept that is gaining importance in the railway sector. Occupational disorders, such as back pain and sciatica, frequently cause sick leave and have resulted in lawsuits against employers. Railway operators require a clear procedure for specification and purchase of certified rail vehicles that evaluate the vehicle from the point of view of the effect of WBV. However, a review of current standards and studies shows no clear and simple method for defining a vibration emission value, such as that defined in EN 1032 for mobile machinery. This study proposes a systematic and robust railway driver-related vibration index and describes the methodology for its determination. The proposed index, based on current WBV standards, is robust and allows comparisons between vehicles. For index validation, we used experimental results as well as results from a neural network using the cabin floor data. Practitioner summary: A new vibration emission index is proposed for the certification of railway vehicles, using whole-body vibration, based on current standards. It could be used as a criterion when purchasing a vehicle and as a design specification for manufacturers, thereby improving the ergonomics of drivers' working environment. Abbreviations: EAV: exposure action value; RMS: root mean square; VDV: vibration dose value; VEI: vibration emission index; VTV: vibration total value; WBV: whole-body vibration.

RESUMO

Advances in additive manufacturing technologies and composite materials are starting to be combined into synergic procedures that may impact the biomedical field by helping to achieve personalized and high-performance solutions for low-resource settings. In this article, we illustrate the benefits of 3D-printed rapid molds, upon which composite fibers can be laminated in a direct and resource-efficient way, for the personalized development of articular splints. The rapid mold concept presented in this work allows for a flexible lamination and curing process, even compatible with autoclaves. We demonstrate the procedure by completely developing an autoclave-cured carbon fiber-epoxy composite ankle immobilizing, supporting, or protecting splint. These medical devices may support patients in their recovery of articular injuries and for promoting a more personalized medical care employing high-performance materials, whose mechanical response is analyzed and compared to that of commercial devices. In fact, this personalization is fundamental for enhanced ergonomics, comfort during rehabilitation, and overall aesthetics. The proposed design and manufacturing strategies may support the low-cost and user-centered development of a wide set of biomedical devices and help to delocalize the supply chain for involving local populations in the development of medical technology.

RESUMO

Although the use of personalized annuloplasty rings manufactured for each patient according to the size and morphology of their valve complex could be beneficial for the treatment of mitral insufficiency, this possibility has been limited for reasons of time-lines and costs as well as for design and manufacturing difficulties, as has been the case with other personalized implant and prosthetic developments. However, the present quality of medical image capture equipment together with the benefits to be had from computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies (CAD-CAM) and the capabilities furnished by rapid prototyping technologies, present new opportunities for a personalized response to the development of implants and prostheses, the social impact of which could turn out to be highly positive. This paper sets out a personalized development of an annuloplasty ring based on the combined use of information from medical imaging, from CAD-CAM design programs and prototype manufacture using rapid prototyping technologies.
