RESUMO

We measure the cross section for e+e- -->psi(3770) -->hadrons at Ec.m.=3773 MeV to be (6.38+/-0.08(+0.41)(-0.30) nb using the CLEO detector at the CESR e+e- collider. The difference between this and the e+e- -->psi(3770) -->DD cross section at the same energy is found to be (-0.01+/-0.08(+0.41)(-0.30) nb. With the observed total cross section, we extract Gamma(ee)(psi(3770))=(0.204+/-0.003(+0.041)(-0.027) keV. Uncertainties shown are statistical and systematic, respectively.

RESUMO

We report on a search for the recently reported X(3872) state using 15.1 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) data taken in the sqrt[s] = 9.46-11.30 GeV region. Separate searches for the production of the X(3872) in untagged gammagamma fusion and e(+)e(-) annihilation following initial state radiation are made by taking advantage of the unique angular correlation between the leptons from the decay J/psi --> l(+)l(-) in X(3872) decay to pi(+)pi(-)J/psi. No signals are observed in either case, and 90% confidence upper limits are established as (2J+1)Gamma(gammagamma)(X(3872))B(X --> pi(+)pi(-)J/psi) < 12.9 eV and Gamma(ee)(X(3872))B(X- -> pi(+)pi(-)J/psi) < 8.3 eV.

RESUMO

Using 20.7 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data taken at sq.rt(r) = 3.671 GeV with the CLEO-c detector, precision measurements of the electromagnetic form factors of the charged pion, charged kaon, and proton have been made for timelike momentum transfer of |Q(2)| = 13.48 GeV(2) by the reaction e(+)e(-) --> h(+)h(-). The measurements are the first ever with identified pions and kaons of |Q(2)| > 4 GeV(2), with the results F(13.48 GeV(2)) = 0.075 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.005(syst) and F(K)(13.48 GeV(2)) = 0.063 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.001(syst). The result for the proton, assuming G(p)(E) = G(p)(M), is G(p)(M)(13.48 GeV(2)) = 0.014 +/- 0.002(stat) +/- 0.001(syst), which is in agreement with earlier results.

RESUMO

Using 9.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity in e(+)e(-) collisions near the Upsilon(4S) mass collected with the CLEO II.V detector we report the first observation of the decay D0-->K(0)(S)etapi(0). We measure the ratio of branching fractions, BR(D0-->K(0)(S)etapi(0))BR / (D0-->K(0)(S)pi(0))=0.46+/-0.07+/-0.06. We perform a Dalitz analysis of 155 selected D0-->K(0)(S)etapi(0) candidates and find leading contributions from a(0)(980)K(0)(S) and K(*)(892)eta intermediate states.

RESUMO

We report on the observation of the eta(')(c)(2(1)S0), the radial excitation of the eta(c)(1(1)S0) ground state of charmonium, in the two-photon fusion reaction gammagamma-->eta(')(c)-->K(0)(S)K+/-pi(-/+) in 13.6 fb(-1) of CLEO II/II.V data and 13.1 fb(-1) of CLEO III data. We obtain M(eta(')(c))=3642.9+/-3.1(stat)+/-1.5(syst) MeV and M(eta(c))=2981.8+/-1.3(stat)+/-1.5(syst) MeV. The corresponding values of hyperfine splittings between 1S0 and 3S1 states are DeltaM(hf)(1S)=115.1+/-2.0 MeV and DeltaM(hf)(2S)=43.1+/-3.4 MeV. Assuming that the eta(c) and eta(')(c) have equal branching fractions to K(S)Kpi, we obtain Gamma(gammagamma)(eta(')(c))=1.3+/-0.6 keV.

RESUMO

We report on a search for charmless hadronic B decays to the three-body final states K(0)(S)h(+)pi(-), K(+)h(-)pi(0), K(0)(S)h(+)pi(0) (h(+/-) denotes a charged pion or kaon), and their charge conjugates, using 13.5 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced near sqrt[s]=10.6 GeV, and collected with the CLEO detector. We observe the decay B-->K0pi(+)pi(-) with a branching fraction (50(+10)(-9)(stat.)+/-7(syst.))x10(-6) and the decay B-->K(*+)(892)pi(-) with a branching fraction (16(+6)(-5)(stat.)+/-2(syst.))x10(-6).

RESUMO

In e(+)e(-) collisions using the CLEO detector, we have studied the decay of the D0 to the final state K(0)(S)pi(+)pi(-) with the initial flavor of the D0 tagged by the decay D(*+)-->D0pi(+). We use the Dalitz technique to measure the resonant substructure in this final state and clearly observe ten different contributions by fitting for their amplitudes and relative phases. We observe a K(*)(892)(+)pi(-) component which arises from doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays or D0-D0; mixing.

RESUMO

Using the combined CLEO II and CLEO II.V data sets of 9.1 fb(-1) at the Upsilon(4S), we measure properties of psi mesons produced directly from decays of the B meson, where "B" denotes an admixture of B+, B-, B0, and B;(0), and "psi" denotes either J/psi(1S) or psi(2S). We report first measurements of psi polarization in B-->psi(direct)X: alpha(psi(1S))=-0.30(+0.07)(-0.06)+/-0.04 and alpha(psi(2S))=-0.45(+0.22)(-0.19)+/-0.04. We also report improved measurements of the momentum distributions of psi produced directly from B decays, correcting for measurement smearing. Finally, we report measurements of the inclusive branching fraction for B-->psiX and B-->chi(c1)X.

RESUMO

Society's preoccupation with outward appearance and thinness has increased the incidence of both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, two potentially threatening diseases. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain accurate statistics on these eating disorders. Those with an eating disorder are often unwilling to admit they have this disorder and are reluctant to seek help. Subsequently, eating disorders have become a serious concern for medical and dental professionals. Since dental professionals see patients on a regular basis, he/she may be the person to whom the eating disorder patient confides.1 For the same reason, the oral care provider may be the first to notice oral manifestations of disease in the anoretic or bulimic person.2,3 The dental professional can serve as an important link between the person with an eating disorder and professional therapy. Knowledge of the signs and symptoms for these diseases is important because early diagnosis and treatment can result in more successful therapy.

RESUMO

We report the cases of 22 patients who were hospitalized for pine oil cleaner ingestion. The toxic manifestations most commonly observed were mucous membrane and gastrointestinal irritation. Ataxia, which did not occur in adults, was a frequent presenting sign of intoxication in children. Fifty-nine percent of patients who ingested only pine oil cleaner developed central nervous system depression, and three of these developed coma. Three of five children and three of 17 adults developed acute hydrocarbon pneumonitis. Unlike aspiration pneumonitis, which follows petroleum distillate ingestion, chemical pneumonitis from pine oil cleaner may occur from gastrointestinal absorption of pine oil and deposition in lung tissue. However, recovery from pneumonitis in our patients was typically rapid and complete. Only two adults developed secondary bacterial pneumonia; no patient died. Ingestion of pine oil cleaner was rarely life threatening; most patients needed only gastrointestinal decontamination and minimal supportive care.

RESUMO

In addition to iodized salt, the American diet is inadvertently supplemented with iodine from other foods, such as bread and cow's milk. The iodine content of breast milk has not been assessed recently in this country. Sixty-one samples of breast milk from 37 women were analyzed for iodide content using an iodide-selective electrode method. Mean breast milk iodide level on initial samples for this population was 178 micrograms/L (range 29 to 490 micrograms/L), about four times the recommended daily allowance for infants. Iodide levels in breast milk did not correlate with the age of the infant (ie, stage of lactation). There was a significant correlation between the iodide level in the breast milk and dietary iodine as estimated by a food frequency questionnaire, and iodized salt intake was significantly related to the iodide content of the breast milk.

RESUMO

In the study of mass transfer of substrate through floc particles, it is essential to have an estimate of floc size. This study presents floc size measurements made on pure culture bacterial floc and shows their applicability to mass transfer studies. A critical review of the biological literature on methods to size biological floc and determine wet floc density is also presented.
