RESUMO

This study was undertaken in the context of a project of reclamation of a burned forest area applying municipal waste compost (MWC) and it consisted of an incubation experience carried out under laboratory conditions. The objectives of this research were to asses the effect of three doses of MWC added to burned and unburned calcareous soils on a) SOM mineralization and b) soil microbiological parameters. The laboratory incubation experience was carried out with three compost doses (1, 2 and 4% w/w) on a burned soil and another unburned one from an adjacent plot, besides the corresponding control samples. The mineralization kinetics of the organic matter was studied for 92 days. The kinetics data were adjusted to a double exponential model, showing two C pools of different degrees of resistance to mineralization and concentration, with half-life times of 1.9-4.9 and 34-76 days, respectively. In the unburned soil, the initial potential mineralization rate of the labile and stable C pools showed an opposed behavior, increased and decreased with the MWC dose, respectively. However in the burned soil no significant tendencies were observed. Although applying compost tended to increase the size of more labile pool with respect to total mineralizable C, however most of the soil or compost OM did not result mineralizable in the short and medium term. The compost amendment did not increase soil microbial activity.

RESUMO

Recently, the collisionless expansion of spherical nanoplasmas has been analyzed with a new ergodic model, clarifying the transition from hydrodynamiclike to Coulomb-explosion regimes, and providing accurate laws for the relevant features of the phenomenon. A complete derivation of the model is presented here. The important issue of the self-consistent initial conditions is addressed by analyzing the initial charging transient due to the electron expansion, in the approximation of immobile ions. A comparison among different kinetic models for the expansion is presented, showing that the ergodic model provides a simplified description, which retains the essential information on the electron distribution, in particular, the energy spectrum. Results are presented for a wide range of initial conditions (determined from a single dimensionless parameter), in excellent agreement with calculations from the exact Vlasov-Poisson theory, thus providing a complete and detailed characterization of all the stages of the expansion.

RESUMO

The collisionless expansion of spherical plasmas composed of cold ions and hot electrons is analyzed using a novel kinetic model, with special emphasis on the influence of the electron dynamics. Simple, general laws are found, relating the relevant expansion features to the initial conditions of the plasma, determined from a single dimensionless parameter. A transition is identified in the behavior of the ion energy spectrum, which is monotonic only for high electron temperatures, otherwise exhibiting a local peak far from the cutoff energy.

RESUMO

A patient with Schmidt's syndrome and atypical symptoms of Addison's disease is presented. Autoimmune thyroiditis was diagnosed at the age of 12 years and then at 15 years; a diagnosis of migraine was made following 10 days of headache, visual field defects and dysarthria. One week later the patient was admitted to hospital in critical condition. Addison's disease was diagnosed and replacement therapy was introduced which brought about a rapid clinical improvement. Positive adrenal autoantibodies confirmed the diagnosis. We suggest that patients with organ-specific autoimmune disease undergo annual screening for adrenal activity, and in the event of abnormal results, adrenal autoantibody evaluation should be carried out, to avoid a life-threatening crisis caused by Addison's disease, which is often difficult to recognize due to atypical clinical presentation, as in the patient reported here.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and risk factors related to secondary thyroid carcinoma (STC) in patients who have undergone allogeneic BMT during childhood. Data related to the primary hematological disorder and BMT procedure were obtained from the records of 113 patients (42 F; 71 M) who underwent BMT before the age of 18 (median 10.0 years; range 1.7-18.0) and survived more than 3 years after transplant with a median follow-up of 10.1 years (range 3.0-19.0). Sixteen received cranial radiation (CRT) during first-line treatment. Pre-transplant conditioning included TBI in 85 patients, TAI in two, while 26 children did not receive irradiation. The standardized incidence ratio of STC after BMT was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than that of the general population. STC was found in eight patients, 3.1 to 15.7 years after transplant. All received TBI and three also CRT. The Cox's regression analysis, although not statistically significant due to the small study population, showed an increased risk in those who had received a cumulative radiation dose higher than 10 Gy and in those who developed chronic GVHD. Careful follow-up of thyroid status including annual ultrasound examination is recommended for early detection of tumor.

RESUMO

Three female patients with a previously poorly controlled Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), without evidence of cardiovascular, hepatic or renal dysfunction, developed generalized edema after a substantial increase in their insulin dosage. Edema resolved in 2-3 weeks, without specific therapy. Our patient's findings met the criteria of diagnosis of insulin edema. Insulin edema during IDDM is an uncommon complication of insulin therapy (1/400) and its pathogenesis is not clarified so far; it is a transient and self-limiting condition. The diagnosis is based on exclusion of all other major causes of edema.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess updated incidence of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in 0- to 14-year-old children in Liguria, a northwest region of Italy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Incident cases were recorded prospectively from 1987 to 1991. Incidence rates (IRs) were directly standardized on the basis of the 1990 world population. The independent effect of age, sex, residence, and calendar year was estimated with a Poisson regression model. The degree of ascertainment was calculated in accordance with the capture/recapture method. RESULTS: During 5 full calendar years, 117 new cases of IDDM in children were diagnosed in Liguria. The standardized IR over the 5-year period was 11.72 cases.100,000(-1).year-1. The sex-specific IR among males and females was 11.45 and 12.01, respectively. The age-specific IR was higher in the 5-9 age-group. CONCLUSIONS: The IR of IDDM in Liguria is among the highest in southern Europe and approaches that of northern European countries. In particular, it is much higher than those reported in the surrounding Italian regions, except for Sardinia. Therefore, the geographical distribution of IDDM does not seem to reflect the simple north-south gradient reported in several previous studies.
