RESUMO

Background and aim The majority of acne has the potential to transform into facial scars, which have a physical and psychological effect on the individual. There are plenty of treatment options to manage such scars. The aim of this study is to assess the comparative effect of the injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) alone, with that of the injection of PRP with microneedling, in the reduction of atrophic facial acne scars.  Methods A total of 30 participants were included in this study, divided into two groups (n = 15). Patients in Group I received intradermal injection of PRP only, and Group II included patients receiving intradermal injection of PRP with microneedling. The scar appearance was evaluated at baseline, after one, two, and three months using Goodman Baron's scar scale. The statistics were analysed using the Chi-square and Student's t-tests.  Results Patients in the PRP with microneedling group had lower acne scar scores on the Goodman Baron scale compared to those who received only PRP. The acne scores were statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) in the second and third months of treatment in Group II.  Conclusion The addition of microneedling to PRP has proven to be effective in the reduction of facial acne scars. However, different types of scars require different modalities of treatment, and the final decision lies in the hands of the operator and the requirements of the patients.

RESUMO

Myoepithelioma is an uncommon benign tumor of the orofacial region arising from the salivary glands. These tumors are composed of specifically myoepithelial cells lacking ductal differentiation and were initially considered as a type of pleomorphic adenoma. Though they commonly arise from the parotid gland, there are a few cases that emerge from the minor salivary glands of the palate and oral cavity. Myoepitheliomas resemble many other tumors arising from the palate including pleomorphic adenoma. This report depicts a case of myoepithelioma of the minor salivary gland of the palate in a 23-year-old patient and the successful management of the lesion.

RESUMO

Background: Increasing stroke burden in India demands a long-term stroke surveillance framework. Earlier studies in India were urban-based, short term and provided limited data on stroke incidence and its outcomes. This gap is addressed by the establishment of five population-based stroke registries (PBSRs) of the National Stroke Registry Programme, India. This paper describes stroke incidence, mortality and age, sex, and subtypes distribution in the five PBSRs with urban and rural populations. Methods: First-ever incident stroke patients in age group ≥18 years, resident for at least one year in the defined geographic area, identified from health facilities were registered. Death records with stroke as the cause of death from the Civil Registration System (CRS) were included. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) was excluded. Three PBSRs (Cuttack, Tirunelveli, Cachar) included urban and rural populations. PBSRs in Kota and Varanasi were urban areas. The crude and age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) by age, sex, and residence (urban and rural), rate ratios of ASR, case fatality proportions and rates at day 28 after onset of stroke were calculated for years 2018-2019. Findings: A total of 13,820 registered first-ever stroke cases that included 985 death certificate-only cases (DCOs) were analysed. The pooled crude incidence rate was 138.1 per 100,000 population with an age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) of 103.4 (both sexes), 125.7 (males) and 80.8 (females). The risk of stroke among rural residents was one in seven (Cuttack), one in nine (Tirunelveli), and one in 15 (Cachar). Ischemic stroke was the most common type in all PBSRs. Age-standardized case fatality rates (ASCFR) per 100,000 population for pooled PBSRs was 30.0 (males) and 18.8 (females), and the rate ratio (M/F) ranged from 1.2 (Cuttack) to 2.0 (Cachar). Interpretation: Population-based registries have provided a comprehensive stroke surveillance platform to measure stroke burden and outcomes by age, sex, residence and subtype across India. The rural-urban pattern of stroke incidence and mortality shall guide health policy and programme planning to strengthen stroke prevention and treatment measures in India. Funding: The National Stroke Registry Programme is funded through the intramural funding of the Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety and nosocomial infection are the most common reported problems in children undergoing cleft surgeries. Research shows that there is an enigma in the use of antihistamine therapy in children for the management of upper respiratory tract infection. 'Promethazine' is a first-generation H1 receptor antagonist, and antihistamine also has strong sedative effects. Our study aims at evaluating the Effectiveness of Promethazine (Phenergan) in preoperative and intra operative sequelae in cleft surgeries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a single-centre, parallel, randomized, double-blinded randomized control clinical trial, which was conducted among 128 children between 2 and 4 years of age undergoing cleft palate surgery under general anaesthesia. After randomization, the case group was subjected to promethazine syrup 1 mg/kg body weight twice a day, orally for 3 days. The primary outcomes were preoperative anxiety levels which were recorded by children fear scale. The secondary outcomes include preoperative sleep quality and cough rate of children which are recorded by using sleep and cough objective scale respectively. The intraoperative heart rate is monitored with an ECG connected to a monitor. RESULTS: Promethazine causes a reduction in the anxiety level by 70%, 64% reduction in cold and cough, improvement in sleep score by 70% and the heart rate was found to be stable throughout the surgery when compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: As the benefits of promethazine in cleft palate surgery rule over its adverse effects, promethazine is considered safe to be used as premedication for children undergoing cleft palate surgeries.

RESUMO

Alternative fuel opportunities can satisfy energy security and reduce carbon emissions. In this regard, the hydrogen fuel is derived from the source of environmental pollutants like sewage and algae wastewater through hydrothermal gasification technique using a KOH catalyst with varied gasification process parameters of duration and temperature of 6-30 min and 500-800 °C. The novelty of the work is to identify the optimum gasification process parameter for obtaining the maximum hydrogen yield using a KOH catalyst as an alternative fuel for agricultural engine applications. Influences of gasification processing time and temperature on H2 selectivity, Carbon gasification efficiency (CE), Lower heating value (LHV), Hydrogen yield potential (HYP), and gasification efficiency (GE) were studied. Its results showed that the gasifier operated at 800 °C for 30 min, offering maximum hydrogen yield (26 mol/kg) and gasification efficiency (58 %). The synthesized H2 was an alternative fuel blended with diesel fuel/TiO2 nanoparticles. It was experimentally studied using an internal combustion engine. Influences of H2 on engine performance, like brake-specific fuel consumption, brake thermal efficiency and emission performances, were measured and compared with diesel fuel. The results showed that DH20T has the least (420g/kWh) brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and superior brake thermal efficiency of about 25.2 %. The emission results revealed that the DH20T blend showed the NOX value increased by almost 10.97 % compared to diesel fuel, whereas the CO, UHC, and smoke values reduced by roughly 31.25, 28.34, and 42.35 %. The optimum fuel blend (DH20T) result is recommended for agricultural engine applications.

RESUMO

Several energy-related strategies and scenarios have been suggested to address concerns about rising global temperatures. In addition to using renewable energy, the improvement in energy efficiency of conventional systems is also in focus. Policies are already in place in many countries, including India, to address the energy needs of rural and small-scale enterprises by gasifying locally available, diverse agricultural leftovers. Although rice husk and groundnut shell are two commonly used agricultural leftovers in the southern part of India, their appropriate blending must be studied to improve their conversion efficiency in co-gasification. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to construct a statistical model utilizing response surface methodology (RSM) to analyze the thermochemical co-gasification of the aforementioned biomass materials. Since RSM can predict optimum performance with limited experimental data, this could contribute to the identification of the performance and operating parameters of an open-core gasifier. The model predicts that the mixture containing 20% rice husk and working at an ER of 0.25 and a reduction zone inlet temperature of 879.9 °C will be CO-23.53%, H2-13.97%, and CH4-3.56%. In addition, the lower heating value and gas yield can be as high as 6.17 MJ/Nm3 and 2.369 m3/kg, respectively. This outcome can contribute to the effective utilization of biomass for energy supply in rural areas. However, the economic parameters must be analyzed to implement the same in any region.

RESUMO

Background Third molar surgeries are commonly performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. Pain associated with this procedure is usually a frequent reason for patient apprehension and discomfort. Oral analgesics, though effective, do not provide sufficient pain relief in the immediate postoperative period.  Aim To assess the postoperative effect on pain levels of single-dose administration of ketoprofen and diclofenac sodium as an injection in patients undergoing third molar removal surgeries.  Methods This study was conducted among 30 patients divided into two groups (n=15). Patients in Group K received injection ketoprofen 100 mg and Group D included patients receiving injection diclofenac sodium 75 mg, both intramuscularly postoperatively. The intensity of pain was assessed at 30 minutes, two, six, and eight hours post-surgical removal of the impacted tooth using the visual analogue scale (VAS). The statistical data was analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The comparative statistical test adopted to compare pain scores between the two groups was the Independent samples t-test. A p-value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results Our study results revealed that Group K patient's VAS scores after two hours, six hours, and eight hours were 3.9 ± 2.7, 4.5 ± 3.23, 2.93 ± 2.27 respectively. In Group D patient's VAS scores after two hours, six hours, and eight hours were 4.83 ± 2.82, 5.03 ± 2.9, 3.73 ± 2.91 respectively. Patients who were administered ketoprofen had lower pain levels when compared to patients who were given diclofenac but the difference was not statistically significant at any time point (p=0.172 after eight hours). Our results depicted that the pain levels uniformly reached their maximal levels six hours after the procedure and thereafter steadily declined in both groups.  Conclusion It can be concluded from the study that both the drugs ketoprofen and diclofenac sodium analyzed in this study can be used interchangeably for the reduction of pain following lower third molar surgery.

RESUMO

Orthodontic treatment often faces challenges in achieving proper anchorage. While orthodontic mini-implants have gained popularity, no universally accepted design and insertion protocol exists for these implants. However, their relatively modest failure rate indicates their clinical reliability. To address complex geometries in the maxilla and mandible, patient-specific implants (PSIs) have emerged as a solution. PSI is currently employed in various domains of oral and maxillofacial surgery like temporomandibular joint (TMJ), total joint replacement, reconstruction of the facial skeleton, and orthognathic surgery. PSI allows for the creation of customized implant fits, leading to shorter rehabilitation times. This case report presents a multidisciplinary approach involving oral surgery and orthodontics, specifically focusing on the design of PSI, surgical placement of PSI, and use of PSI in maxillary protraction in orthodontics. The report highlights the design process of designing PSI and emphasizes its role in orthodontic treatment. By incorporating PSI as a temporary anchorage device (TAD), enhanced stability, precise control over tooth movement, and accurate repositioning of jaws can be achieved. The collaborative effort between orthodontists and oral surgeons is crucial in integrating PSI into the overall treatment plan. Despite the higher costs associated with PSI, their numerous advantages outweigh these drawbacks. PSI plays a vital role in providing enhanced stability, appropriate treatment plan, and achieving desired treatment in orthodontic and oral surgery procedures.

RESUMO

Benign fibro-osseous lesions are a group of pathological conditions characterized by the replacement of normal bone with cellular fibrous connective tissue that undergoes mineralization. The most common types of benign fibro-osseous lesions include fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and osseous dysplasia. However, diagnosing these lesions can be challenging due to their overlapping clinical, radiological, and histological features, which can cause a diagnostic dilemma for surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists. One rare type of benign fibro-osseous lesion is the cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), which is a definitive form of a benign fibro-osseous tumor that affects the craniofacial region, particularly the jaws (70%). Here, we present a case of COF in a 61-year-old female patient in the maxillary anterior region. Due to a clear distinction between the lesion and healthy bone, the lesion was treated with conservative surgical excision followed by curettage and primary closure. However, differential diagnosis of COF can be highly challenging for clinicians due to its overlapping features with other fibro-osseous lesions like Paget's disease and fibrous dysplasia. Ossifying fibroma and fibrous dysplasia often present a histopathological, clinical, and radiological overlap. The post-operative follow-up after eight months was unpredictable, with a radiological picture showing the increased thickness of the frontal bone, parietal bone, and maxilla with obliteration of marrow spaces, alteration of the trabecular pattern with a cotton wool/ground glass appearance, and reduced maxillary sinus space. Proper evaluation and diagnosis of fibro-osseous lesions are necessary before arriving at a final conclusion. Cemento-ossifying fibroma in the maxillofacial skeleton is uncommon, and after eight months, the recurrence rate is rare. This case highlights the importance of considering COF as a differential diagnosis for fibro-osseous lesions in the maxillofacial region and the necessity for proper evaluation and diagnosis to determine the appropriate treatment plan and prognosis. In summary, the diagnosis of benign fibro-osseous lesions can be challenging due to their overlapping features, but early diagnosis and proper evaluation are essential for successful treatment outcomes. COF is a rare type of benign fibro-osseous lesion where other fibro-osseous lesions in the maxillofacial region should be considered as a differential diagnosis, and the necessary steps should be taken to confirm the diagnosis before arriving at a final conclusion.

RESUMO

Nowadays, scarcity arises in almost all our basic needs, including water, fuel, and food. Recycling used and scrapped things for a valuable commodity is highly appreciable for compensating for the globally fast-growing demand. This paper aims to investigate waste tyre oil for preparing biodiesel for CI engines by enhancing their performance with hybrid nanoparticles for preparing nanofuel and hybrid nanofuel. The nanoparticles (30-40 nm) of MWCNT and TiO2 were utilized to prepare nanofuels with nanoparticle concentrations of MWCNT (300 ppm) and TiO2 (300 ppm), respectively. In the case of hybrid nanofuel, the nanoparticle concentration of MWCNT (150 ppm) and TiO2 (150 ppm) was preferred. The performance of the proposed nanofuel and hybrid nanofuel with pure diesel was evaluated. The proposed fuel performance outperforms the combustion performance, has higher engine efficiency, and has fewer emissions. The best performances were noticed in hybrid nanofuel that has 32% higher brake thermal efficiency than diesel and 24% and 4% lower BSFC and peak pressure than diesel, respectively. The emission performance is also 29%, 50%, and 13% lower in CO, HC, and CO2 emissions than that in pure diesel.

RESUMO

Background Third-molar surgeries are very commonly done by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Pain and swelling that is associated with this procedure is a frequent reason for the patient's discomfort and apprehension. There is a need to look for a drug that can substantially reduce postoperative swelling amongst the patients. Pain, swelling, and trismus are common complications that are encountered after third molar surgery. These complications have a major impact on the quality of life of patients undergoing minor surgical procedures. Aim The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of coumarin and trypsin/chymotrypsin in the reduction of postoperative sequelae for mandibular third molar surgeries. Materials and methods The research was carried out at Saveetha Dental College and Hospital in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The study consisted of 50 individuals, 25 individuals received tablets of coumarin, and 25 individuals received tablets containing a combination of trypsin/chymotrypsin postoperatively. Patients were evaluated postoperatively for pain and swelling. Postoperative pain was measured on days one, three, and seven after surgery using a visual analog scale. The postoperative swelling was measured on postoperative days three and day seven via a four-point technique. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23 (Released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. The independent samples t-test was used to compare the outcomes between the two groups. Results It was found that study participants in the trypsin/chymotrypsin group reported statistically significantly less pain postoperatively than participants receiving coumarin (p=0.001). There was more reduction in swelling postoperatively in patients who were given trypsin/chymotrypsin as compared to the participants who were given coumarin, and the results were statistically significant. Conclusion Based on the data obtained, it can be inferred that the trypsin/chymotrypsin combination was more effective in reducing postoperative sequelae like pain and swelling than coumarin in the mandibular third molar surgeries.

RESUMO

By employing first principles density functional theory calculations on thickness dependent structural and electronic properties of (0001) surface slabs of wurtzite MX compounds, our study demonstrated the possibility of the existence of 2D layered materials from II-VI group traditional semiconducting compounds that are widely used in various fields. Our calculations revealed that (0001) surface slabs of wurtzite ZnO and CdO compounds prefer to stabilize as sp2 hybridized - atomically thin graphitic layers as observed in earlier work, which are separated by van der Waals distances, when compared to the respective wurtzite slabs. On the other hand, for surface slabs of other ZnX and CdX (X = S, Se, Te) compounds, sp3 hybridized bilayers, which comprise an X-Zn(Cd)-Zn(Cd)-X structural arrangement, are energetically stable until certain thicknesses of the slabs. Both 2D layered MO and MX systems are electronically insulating in nature. When increasing the number of layers in these systems, the band gap decreases due to the widening of the energy bands. Our calculations further confirmed that all of these 2D systems possess structural, elastic, and lattice dynamical stabilities, depicting their compatibility in optoelectronics and photovoltaic applications, as confirmed by their effective mass and mobility.

RESUMO

Recently, there has been a growing interest in exploring new 2D nanostructures, due to their unique electronic and optical properties. An atomically thin SiC sheet, which has a honeycomb structure similar to BN, as well as being a direct band gap semiconductor, is one such candidate. Despite several theoretical reports predicting the structural and dynamical stability of 2D SiC nanostructures, few experimental reports have been reported so far. In the present work, we demonstrated by employing first principles density functional theory calculations that the role of self defects on the exfoliation of SiC layers can be understood by studying monolayer, bilayer and trilayer 2D SiC systems. From our work, it can be seen that the dangled C atom on the removal of a Si atom in the SiC layer prefers to interact with an adjacent layer, owing to the compensation of the charges, whereas, a dangled Si atom (in the carbon vacancy case) in the SiC layer compensates its additional charge within the layer by forming a Si-Si bond. We concluded that the exfoliation process of SiC is significantly affected by Si vacancies, rather than the presence of carbon vacancies. This work also provides an intuitive idea to synthesise 2D SiC nanostructures as it has interesting structural and electronic properties.

RESUMO

Owing to the unique electronic properties of layered materials, topological insulators have interestingly grabbed much attention in the field of photocatalytic water splitting. Nowadays, 2D layered materials were composited with semiconductor photocatalysts, encourage much as it provides enormous active sites and also significantly prevent photogenerated charge recombination. Especially, Bi2Se3 possesses exceptional properties like topologically preserved conducting surface states with bulk insulating behavior and high surface area, which provides unconventional electron dynamics, resulting in facile electron transport and effective charge separation to photocatalyst. So far, several methods have been attempted to synthesize few-layered Bi2Se3 nanosheets from its bulk crystals. Here, a unique attempt is made and succeeded to exfoliate bulk Bi2Se3 to few layered nanosheets via surfactant free supercritical fluid processing using N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as an exfoliating agent, with a short reaction time of 15 min. The exfoliation of Bi2Se3 crystal was confirmed by several characterization techniques, such as XRD, SEM, Raman, and HR-TEM. Furthermore, different weight percentages of exfoliated Bi2Se3 sheets/anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared and examined the photocatalytic activity using glycerol as a hole scavenger. Among them, 15 wt.% Bi2Se3 coupled TiO2 nanocomposite showed enormous hydrogen evolution rate of 84.9 mmol h-1g-1cat, which is 80 times higher than that of TiO2 nanoparticles. In addition, the photostability of the nanocomposite was also verified, where it retains 94% of activity even after 4 cycles of continuous experiments. The improved rate of H2 production was understood by theoretical calculations that topologically preserved conducting surface states of co-catalyst, Bi2Se3 nanosheets is supported to high mobile and scatter free electrons. It mediates the transport of electrons with TiO2 nanoparticles that helped the effective charge separation. Thus, it proves a promising candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Buccal mucosal graft (BMG) urethroplasty is considered as gold standard in the treatment of urethral stricture disease. The successful outcome after BMG urethroplasty varies between 66 and 99%. One of the possible causes for failure is BMG contracture. Primary BMG contracture rate is poorly understood and unreported. The present study aimed to evaluate the extent of contracture of buccal mucosa immediately after harvesting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study conducted in the Department of Urology at our institute between January 2016 and December 2019. All patients with urethral stricture disease undergoing BMG urethroplasty for the first time were enrolled in the study after obtaining informed consent. Demographic and patient clinical profile was noted. Based on the intraoperative urethral stricture size, the preharvest graft was marked on the buccal mucosa and the size was calculated. Postharvest unstretched size of the graft was measured immediately after graft removal from the oral cavity. Alteration in BMG size was analysed using paired t-test. RESULTS: Forty-four patients were included in the study. Mean age of the patient was 53.6 years. Mean stricture length was 7.45 cm (range 4-12 cm). Mean pre- and postharvest BMG size was 8.3 × 1.5 cm and 7.6 × 1.3 cm, respectively. There was a 8.4% decrease in length and 9.5% decrease in width of the buccal mucosal graft. CONCLUSION: Primary buccal mucosal graft contracture is around 8.4% in length and 9.5% in width. It would be better to mark wider than necessary while harvesting buccal mucosa so that tension-free anastomosis is performed.

RESUMO

In the present study, the extraction of divalent heavy metals like copper [Cu (II)] and cadmium [Cd (II)] using a Pickering Emulsion Liquid Membrane (PELM) has been investigated by using three different surfactants such as Amphiphilic silica nanowires (ASNWs), Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Alumina) and Sorbitan monooleate (SPAN 80). The influence of the process parameters such as pH, the stripping phase concentration, the agitation speed, and the carrier concentration on the extraction efficiency have been examined to find the optimum conditions at which the maximum recovery of Cu (II) and Cd (II) could take place. At optimum conditions, the extraction efficiency of 89.77% and 91.19% for Cu (II) and Cd (II) ions were achieved. Non-edible oils were used as diluent in this present study to reduce the need for toxic organic solvents in preparing PELM. The impact of each process factor on the extraction efficiency of Cu (II) and Cd (II) ions has been verified using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The higher values of F and lower values of P (less than 0.05) indicate pH is the most significant parameter on the percentage extraction of Cu (II) and Cd (II) using the Taguchi design approach.

RESUMO

A faulty prosthesis can cause damage more than relief. Poor people who cannot afford specialty treatment prefer to go to unregistered dental practitioners who are less expensive. Therefore, it is of interest to record the presence and type of old faulty prosthesis and its effect on surrounding structures. In this study 983 case sheets were reviewed from the record management system at the Saveetha Dental College, India using keyword search. Results show that 33% of faulty prosthesis leads to periodontally compromised abutments, 26% to decay of abutment tooth, 20% to gingival inflammation, 13% to denture stomatitis, 6.6% to non-vital abutment tooth. Faulty prosthesis damages abutment tooth and the surrounding structure of oral mucosa. Thus, damage to the periodontium in fixed prosthesis is common and prevalent. Hence, faulty dental prosthesis construction should be discouraged through awareness programme.

RESUMO

The production of hydrogen from ecofriendly renewable technologies like water electrolysis and fuel cells involves oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which plays a major role, but the slow kinetics of OER is a bottleneck of commercialization of such technologies. Herein, we have reported the formation of an efficient OER catalyst from SnCo(OH)6 (SCH) by leaching of Sn atoms during electrochemical OER studies. According to density functional theory calculations, adsorption of OH* species on Sn atoms is energetically more favorable than that of Co atoms, and as a result, highly active CoOOH is generated by leaching of Sn atoms from surface layers. We observed enhanced OER performance with superior mass activity by blending SCH with activated charcoal, which displays a low overpotential of 293 mV and higher mass activity than that of pristine SCH. More importantly, it outperforms Co(OH)2 and RuO2 having the same carbon composition because of the formation of thermodynamically stable and amorphous CoOOH on the surface of single-crystalline SCH and strong tethering ability of activated charcoal.

RESUMO

Background Marine brown algae are biologically diverse and their medicinal value has been explored limited. We assessed whether Padina tetrastromatica Hauck will possess the immune stimulatory and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) inhibitory activity. Materials and Methods Aqueous and methanolic extracts were tested for the Th1/Th2 cytokines using PBMC. Subsequently, leukotriene B4 (LTB4), nitric oxide (NO) and anti-oxidant effect were analyzed using RAW264.7 cells. In addition, Padina extracts were tested for the HIV-1 clade C & A by measuring the levels of viral p24 antigen in infected peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and against reverse transcriptase (RT). Results At 100 µg/mL, aqueous and methanolic extracts produced a significant amount of IL-10 and IFN-γ at 24 h and 72 h post-stimulation by PBMCs. It also produced a significant amount of LTB4, NO and had an antioxidant effect on RAW264.7 cell, suggesting the immune stimulating potential of P. tetrastromatica. Upon infection of PBMCs with 100 TCID50, aqueous and methanolic extracts of P. tetrastromatica inhibited HIV-1 C (>90%) and HIV-1 A (>50%) showed a significant reduction in HIV-1 p24 levels and HIV-1 RT inhibition (>50%). GC-MS study revealed a relative abundance of tetradecanoic and oleic acid in the methanolic extract of P. tetrastromatica, which might be responsible for immune stimulation and anti-HIV-1 activity. Conclusion At lower concentrations (100 mg/mL), the aqueous and methanolic extracts of P. tetrastromatica showed the strong immune stimulation and greatest anti-HIV-1 potential in vitro. RESUMO

We report the results of density functional theory calculations on the atomic and electronic structure of solids formed by assembling A2B2PN (A = Ge and Sn, B = Cl, Br, and I) inorganic double helices. The calculations have been performed using a generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation functional and including van der Waals interactions. Our results show that the double helices crystallize in a monoclinic lattice with van der Waals type weak interactions between the double helices. In all cases except Ge2Cl2PN, the solids are stable with a binding energy between the double helices ranging from 0.06 eV per atom to 0.09 eV per atom and inter-double helices separation of more than 3.33 Å. All the solids are semiconducting. Further calculations have been done by using meta-GGA with a modified Becke-Johnson functional to obtain better band gaps, which are found to lie in the range of 0.91 eV to 1.49 eV. In the case of Ge2Br2PN the solid is a direct band gap semiconductor although the isolated double helix has an indirect band gap and it is suggested to be interesting for photovoltaic, and other optoelectronic applications. The charge transfer between the atoms has been studied using Bader charge analysis and the DDEC6 method in the CHARGEMOL program, which suggests charge transfer from the outer helix to the inner helix.
