RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The presence of neoplastic melanocytes within the eccrine apparatus into the reticular dermis and/or subcutaneous tissue is extremely rare. The staging of syringotropic melanomas and their biological behavior are still controversial. We present 6 new cases of syringotropic melanoma and their main histopathologic features; review the previous literature; and discuss about the origin, staging, and prognosis of this rare variant of melanoma.

RESUMO

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant drug used in many dermatological and nondermatological pathologies. Azathioprine hypersensitivity syndrome (AHS) is a rare idiosyncratic reaction that is not related to dose or thiopurine methyltransferase activity. Up to half of cases of AHS can present with variable cutaneous manifestations besides fever, malaise and other systemic symptoms. It is important to be aware of AHS, as continuance or reintroduction of the drug can led to multiorgan failure and cardiovascular collapse.

RESUMO

In the search for new materials to fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a hybrid composite from metallic copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and a novel cationic π-conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The CuNPs were prepared by chemical reduction in the presence of CPE, which acts as a stabilizing agent. Spectroscopic analysis and electron microscopy showed the distinctive band of the metallic CuNP surface plasmon and their random distribution on the CPE laminar surface, respectively. Theoretical calculations on CuNP/CPE deposits suggest that the interaction between both materials occurs through polyelectrolyte side chains, with a small contribution of its backbone electron density. The CuNP/CPE composite showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis) bacteria, mainly attributed to the CuNPs' effect and, to a lesser extent, to the cationic CPE.

RESUMO

Toker cells (TCs) are sometimes present in the nipple epidermis as oval cells with pale cytoplasm and roundish nuclei. In most cases, TCs may be easily distinguished from cancerous cells of Paget disease of the nipple (PCs). Especially in TC hyperplasia, in which mild-to-moderate atypia may be present, it may be challenging to distinguish between TCs and PCs. The combination of chronic inflammatory changes in the nipple, in the context of Zuska disease, and TC hyperplasia, may easily lead to an erroneous diagnosis of mammary Paget disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Non-neural granular cell tumor (NNGCT) is an uncommon neoplasm of controversial histogenesis and its histopathologic differential diagnosis includes, in addition to conventional GCT, other dermal tumors that may exhibit granular cell change. METHODS: Three patients with a diagnosis of NNGCT were identified in the authors' files. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections and immunohistochemical studies were performed. RESULTS: Histopathological study of the three lesions showed dermal proliferation of granular cells arranged in thick fascicles between collagen bundles. The lesions showed positivity for Factor XIIIa, CD163, CD68, NKIC3, vimentin, ALK, fascin, and cyclin D1. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, positivity for cyclin D1 has not been reported to date in NNGCT. In borderline cases, where the diagnosis is unclear despite histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings, positivity for cyclin D1 may favor the diagnosis of NNGCT. Further investigations to assess the differentiation of this rare neoplasm are needed.

Gambusia holbrooki is the freshwater fish with the greatest distribution in Chile and the world. However, studies dealing with morphology and liver histology of fish are scarce. The liver commonly shows the sublethal effects of environmental pollutants and there should be a histomorphological description of the liver for further comparative studies. The present study aims to describe histomorphological patterns of the liver of Gambusia holbrooki. A total of 97 adult individual specimens were collected from the ecosystems in the valleys of Lluta and Azapa (Region of Arica and Parinacota), to observe patterns morphologically common in both populations. Routine histological and histochemical techniques were used for analysis. The evidence showed that the liver contains pancreatic tissue, and that tissue architecture is trabecular with greater presence of capillary sinusoids.

RESUMO

Goldenberry is a wild fruit that has been widely used for centuries, mainly in folk medicine. Most studies of goldenberry have focused on the fruit, but new research has studied its byproducts, which were considered to be waste until recently. The main objective of our study was to systematize the published information regarding the composition of goldenberry byproducts (calyces, leaves, seeds, and pomace) and their effects on biological systems. Goldenberry byproducts contain minerals, amino acids, withanolides, flavonoids, and essential fatty acids, thus representing good sources of these compounds. Some of their major biological effects include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antiproliferative effects. Information regarding their toxicity is also presented here. To determine the optimal dosage, further safety studies would be recommended to ensure the best health benefits of these compounds. The available evidence has demonstrated the nutritional value of different byproducts of goldenberry, suggesting them to be potential candidates for use in the cosmetic industry, in the preparation of functional foods, and in phytomedicine for the prevention and adjuvant treatment of some diseases. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Metric data of the claws of archaeological specimens of Pediculus humanus capitis (dating between 1500 B.C. and A.D. 1500) and modern lice specimens coming from school children were analyzed and compared. Both sets of samples come from Arica in northern Chile. The overall sample is comprised of 14 archaeological specimens (6 females and 8 males) of Pediculus humanus capitis and 22 modern specimens (13 females and 9 males). All specimens were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), uncoated, using variable pressure mode. The objective of this study was to metrically analyze the first couple of clutches of ancient and modern adult lice specimens (width and length of the tibio-tarsal claw and tarsus length) to test if morphological changes have taken place throughout time in these anatomical elements. We found that archaeological male and female specimens presented significant differences in the tibio-tarsal width (right and left). When comparing data between archaeological and modern male specimens, statistically significant differences were found in almost all the parameters studied, except for the right tarsal length. On the other hand, archaeological and modern female specimens showed no statistically significant change in the variables studied. In brief, our data suggest that modern male specimens have undergone a process of claw reduction, but females have maintained the same dimensions.

Hypobaric hypoxia (HH) is a decisive factor in human health in populations that reside at high altitude levels. Low oxygen rate affects most tissues and organs, including the testis. In humans, hypoxia stimulates angiogenesis, testicular blood flow and increases intrascrotal temperature which determines negative effects on sperm production. Our study researched the effects of HH in mice testicle. Mice were housed in a hypobaric chamber with a setting at 4,200 m above sea level during three different periods of hypoxia (8.3, 16.6 and 24.9 days). Control groups were housed at normoxic conditions (500 m above sea level). Hypoxic mice were treated with melatonin, maca plant (Lepidium meyenii) and melatonin and maca combination. The aim of present study was to determine if maca consumption protects testis against harmful effects of hypoxia and to determine a possible synergistic effect between melatonin and maca administration. In this article we have demonstrated that hypoxia produces a considerable decrease of seminiferous tubules diameter and lumen diameter. Moreover, seminogram showed a reduced sperm count, increased teratozoospermia and a reduction of DNA quality. The HH mice treatment with maca or maca-melatonin combination showed statistically significant improvement at sperm function parameters, and in the reduction of sperm morphology abnormalities and DNA compaction, in some cases attaining rates closer to those registered in normoxic mice. Our experimental data corroborates that maca consumption improves reproductive capacity of populations that inhabit high altitude regions.

RESUMO

This paper presents and discusses archaeological samples of Pediculus humanus capitis nits/eggs in Arica, northern Chile, dating between 2000 B.C. and A.D. 500. Eight samples of nits/eggs taken directly from seven mummified bodies of both the valley and the coast of Arica, were collected and studied. Samples were analysed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), uncoated, using low and variable pressure modes. The aim was to study the morphology of the nits/eggs, the different degrees of preservation and their research potential. All samples were in good external condition and due to manipulation before SEM analysis, the oldest ones were fractured allowing the observation in situ of the hatching ad portas of an embryo. This inside view of the egg allowed observation and identification of microstructures of the embryo such as abdominal and thoracic spiracles and claws. In the most recent and best preserved samples, external structures characteristic of the egg such as aeropyles and operculum were observed. SEM can contribute significantly to the study of ectoparasites that affected ancient American populations and in this particular case to illustrate the stages and morphology of Andean archaeological specimens of P. humanus capitis.
