RESUMO

As a network of researchers we release an open-access database (EUSEDcollab) of water discharge and suspended sediment yield time series records collected in small to medium sized catchments in Europe. EUSEDcollab is compiled to overcome the scarcity of open-access data at relevant spatial scales for studies on runoff, soil loss by water erosion and sediment delivery. Multi-source measurement data from numerous researchers and institutions were harmonised into a common time series and metadata structure. Data reuse is facilitated through accompanying metadata descriptors providing background technical information for each monitoring station setup. Across ten European countries, EUSEDcollab covers over 1600 catchment years of data from 245 catchments at event (11 catchments), daily (22 catchments) and monthly (212 catchments) temporal resolution, and is unique in its focus on small to medium catchment drainage areas (median = 43 km2, min = 0.04 km2, max = 817 km2) with applicability for soil erosion research. We release this database with the aim of uniting people, knowledge and data through the European Union Soil Observatory (EUSO).

The influence of the sea and topography are vital factors in the atmospheric processes affecting any island, as they introduce peculiarities in the hydrosedimentary response of fluvial systems. In view of that, the relationship between the surface atmospheric conditions (weather types, WTs), rainfall, runoff and erosion dynamics in three small catchments located in Mallorca were analysed. The catchments are representative in terms of geomorphology and land use but also due to their location within the major rainfall areas previously identified in the island by (Sumner et al., 1993). Data of rainfall, runoff and sediment variables, coupled with calculated WTs were used for the 2013-2017 period. WTs frequency and distribution during this period were compared to the last climatic period reference (1981-2010) to test the climate validity of the study period. The results illustrated how hydrosedimentary response was mostly caused by eco-geographical patterns but also by differences in the response of each catchment to WTs, related to the intrinsic geographical position in the island and different exposures to humid winds. Anticyclonic WT was the most frequent, despite it being only involved in one flood event at the eastern catchment. Conversely, eastern and northeastern WTs generated more than 85% of the total runoff and sediment, representing only 39% of flood events. The understanding of the specific role of WTs on the island's hydrology was improved, considering that freshwater resources are scarce and eco-sociologically crucial.

Semiarid climate conditions hamper natural re-vegetation, leaving the soil vulnerable to erosion after the cessation of agriculture. Therefore, soil and landscape protective measures, especially afforestations, have been implemented in the Mediterranean region since the early 20th century. This study aims to determine the long term impact of afforestation on soil functioning, in comparison with natural re-vegetation (secondary succession) on abandoned fields and semi-natural vegetation. A comparison of secondary succession and afforestation with the present traditional rain fed cereal fields and semi-natural (open) forest, including natural resource islands, was made as well. Composite soil samples were taken to study the physical (i.e. texture, aggregate stability) and chemical (i.e. carbon content, nutrient availability) soil characteristics after 20 and 40 years of afforestation and secondary natural succession. To take into account the resource island effect, the spatial heterogeneity induced by differences in plant cover, samples were taken both below and in between the tree canopy of the semi-natural and afforested Pinus halepensis trees. Our results indicate that under secondary succession on abandoned fields, soil quality improves non-linearly and only marginally over a time of 40 years. The afforestation showed a much more pronounced linear increase for most soil quality indicators, resulting in soil conditions comparable to what can be found under the semi-natural forest vegetation. Site preparation might have been a crucial factor for the success of ecosystem restoration in the studied dry land area as it improved water availability for the afforestation.
