RESUMO

The electronic and structural properties of a material are strongly determined by its symmetry. Changing the symmetry via a photoinduced phase transition offers new ways to manipulate material properties on ultrafast timescales. However, to identify when and how fast these phase transitions occur, methods that can probe the symmetry change in the time domain are required. Here we show that a time-dependent change in the coherent phonon spectrum can probe a change in symmetry of the lattice potential, thus providing an all-optical probe of structural transitions. We examine the photoinduced structural phase transition in VO(2) and show that, above the phase transition threshold, photoexcitation completely changes the lattice potential on an ultrafast timescale. The loss of the equilibrium-phase phonon modes occurs promptly, indicating a non-thermal pathway for the photoinduced phase transition, where a strong perturbation to the lattice potential changes its symmetry before ionic rearrangement has occurred.

RESUMO

A regional groundwater quality survey from 20 tube wells in the Purbasthali area of the Burdwan district of West Bengal province (India) identified arsenic pollution in this area. Arsenic was detected in 19 cases at a concentration level 0.5 to 135.9 micrograms/L. Speciation studies indicate that As(III) is present in only one sample and organo-arsenic compounds have not been detected. Iron, antimony and pH of such water samples were also studied to see if there is any correlation of the presence of arsenic and these parameters. A high concentration of iron (0.3 to 10.7 mg/L) has been detected. Antimony is present in all these water samples (0.03 to 0.9 microgram/L). The pH value of the groundwater in this area shows that it is more or less neutral.

RESUMO

Fifteen cases of histiocytic medulary reticulosis are reported from Zambia, Africa. The importance of liver biopsy in the diagnosis is stressed. Forty cases have now been described from East and Central Africa suggesting a much higher incidence than in other parts of the world. It is thought that this may be due to prolonged stimulation of the reticuloendothelisl system.
