Food Choice Motives among the Students of a Dental Institution in Mysore City, India.

BACKGROUND: In pursuit of a more "holistic" dentistry and an increasing focus on promoting oral health, dental students are increasingly being trained to take a more active part in health promotion and education. In particular, this incorporates an emphasis on diet and educating people to eat in more healthy ways. AIM: This paper works from the premise that if dental students are to engage in oral health promotion, they will do so more effectively if they have first explored their own food choice motivations. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional questionnaire study. The food choice questionnaire (FCQ) was distributed to a comparative group of 1(st) and 5(th) year dental students in timetabled lecture slots. The FCQ is a previously validated measure designed to assess ten main factors relevant to peoples" food choices. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 18.0 (Chicago, IL, USA) using descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test. RESULTS: Nearly 77% (122/159) students responded. Findings were analyzed using independent sample t-test. Results indicated statistically significant differences in terms of food choice motivations between male and female students of 1(st) and 5(th) year. CONCLUSION: Awareness and an understanding of the differences in motivational factors affecting food choice between dental students is important as they are increasingly taught to play an active role in oral health promotion.

Bilateral parotid swelling in a child--a case report.

Numerous causes for bilateral parotid swellings have been identified. It must be assumed that systemic factors play a key role, thereby the attainment of a definitive diagnosis requires a familiarity with full range of possible etiologies for these swellings. Differential diagnostic skills must be implemented to achieve a precise diagnosis. A case of bilateral parotid swelling in a child is presented and differential diagnosis is discussed.

Oral tuberculosis : a case report.

Tuberculosis can affect any part of the body and oral cavity remains no exception. The oral lesions of tuberculosis, though not common, are seen in various forms. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis of primary tuberculosis of the mouth, which may be misdiagnosed when the oral lesions are the sole manifestation of the disease.

Mandibular canine index in establishing sex identity.

An investigation study on sex identity through mandibular canine index directed to detect sexual dimorphism using the Mesio-Distal width of mandibular permanent canines and inter canine and inter canine arch width in the mandible was conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Bapuji Dental College and Hospital, Davangere. 360 patients were subjected to the mesio-distal measurement and inter canine arch width. Males were detected correctly in 83.3% and in females 81%. They were statistically significant and the related literatures reviewed.
