RESUMO

The Indian coastal waters are stressed due to a multitude of factors, such as the discharge of industrial effluents, urbanization (municipal sewage), agricultural runoff, and river discharge. The coastal waters along the eastern and western seaboard of India exhibit contrasting characteristics in terms of seasonality, the magnitude of river influx, circulation pattern, and degree of anthropogenic activity. Therefore, understanding these processes and forecasting their occurrence is highly necessary to secure the health of coastal waters, habitats, marine resources, and the safety of tourists. This article introduces an integrated buoy-satellite based Water Quality Nowcasting System (WQNS) to address the unique challenges of water quality monitoring in Indian coastal waters and to boost the regional blue economy. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has launched a first-of-its-kind WQNS, and positioned the buoys at two important locations along the east (Visakhapatnam) and west (Kochi) coast of India, covering a range of environmental conditions and tourist-intensive zones. These buoys are equipped with different physical-biogeochemical sensors, data telemetry systems, and integration with satellite-based observations for real-time data transmission to land. The sensors onboard these buoys continuously measure 22 water quality parameters, including surface current (speed and direction), salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, phycocyanin, phycoerythrin, Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter, chlorophyll-a, turbidity, dissolved methane, hydrocarbon (crude and refined), scattering, pCO2 (water and air), and inorganic macronutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, silicate). This real-time data is transmitted to a central processing facility at INCOIS, and after necessary quality control, the data is disseminated through the INCOIS website. Preliminary results from the WQNS show promising outcomes, including the short-term changes in the water column oxic and hypoxic regimes within a day in coastal waters off Kochi during the monsoon period, whereas effluxing of high levels of CO2 into the atmosphere associated with the mixing of water, driven by local depression in the coastal waters off Visakhapatnam. The system has demonstrated its ability to detect changes in the water column properties due to episodic events and mesoscale processes. Additionally, it offers valuable data for research, management, and policy development related to coastal water quality.

RESUMO

This study highlights the recent advancements in organic electronic materials and their potential for cost-effective optoelectronic devices. The investigation focuses on the molecular design, synthesis, and comprehensive analysis of two organic dyes, aiming to explore their suitability for optoelectronic applications. The dyes are strategically constructed with carbazole as the foundational structure, connecting two electron-withdrawing groups: barbituric acid (Cz-BA) and thiobarbituric acid (Cz-TBA). These dyes, featuring carbazole as the core and electron-withdrawing groups, demonstrate promising spectral, optical, electrochemical, thermal, and theoretical properties. They show strong potential for diverse optoelectronic applications, promising efficient light absorption and robust stability. The results endorse their suitability for practical optoelectronic systems.

RESUMO

The solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm (SPEN) of the pancreas is an uncommon tumor that accounts for approximately 1%-2% of exocrine pancreatic neoplasms. It predominantly affects female in their second and third decades of life. In this case report, we present a clinical scenario of a 21-year-old pregnant woman who incidentally discovered a solid cystic lesion in her pancreas, exhibiting features suggestive of SPEN. The patient underwent surgery during the second trimester. Management of pregnant females with SPEN poses challenges due to the absence of definitive treatment guidelines, particularly in determining the ideal timing for surgical intervention. Notably, during pregnancy, the presence of a small SPEN does not necessarily require immediate resection. However, if the tumor is of significant size, it can give rise to complications such as tumor rupture, multivisceral resection, recurrence, spontaneous abortion, intrauterine growth restriction, or premature delivery if not addressed. In the existing literature, a common finding is that approximately two-thirds of pregnant females with SPEN underwent surgery in the second trimester, often without complications for the mother or fetus. All these tumors were larger than 8 cm. The decision to operate before or after birth can be individualized based on team discussion. However, delay in surgery may lead to larger tumors and higher risks like bleeding, rupture, multivisceral resection, and recurrence. Therefore, second-trimester surgery seems safer, and lessens dangers, emergency surgery, and tumor recurrence.

RESUMO

In this paper, we have investigated the performance of underwater vertical wireless optical communication (UVWOC) links employing on-off key modulation for selection combining based receive diversity schemes in the presence of underwater turbulence, pointing errors, and attenuation losses. Due to variations in temperature and salinity along the ocean's depth, turbulence-induced fading affects the performance of the underwater vertical wireless optical link. The vertical link of the underwater medium influenced by a strong turbulence regime is modeled using cascaded gamma-gamma distribution considering multiple non-identical layers along with attenuation losses and pointing errors. We have derived closed-form expressions for the average bit error rate (BER) and outage probability (OP) for the link employing multiple detectors at the receiving end. The accuracy of all of the closed-form expressions derived in this paper has been validated using Monte Carlo simulations.

RESUMO

This study developed a method to simultaneously determine 73 multi-class pesticides in okra fruit using LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS. The sample was extracted with acetonitrile and subsequent clean-up through dispersive-SPE method. The quantification level of the technique was 0.01 µg g-1 and compliance to the MRLs fixed by the regulatory bodies like EU and FSSAI. The recovery at 10, 50, and 100 µg kg-1 spiked levels; intra and inter-day precision at 50 µg kg-1 were found within 70-120% with RSD less than 15% with LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS. Measurement uncertainty was in the range of 1.81 to 12.91 µg kg-1 estimated at 50 µg kg-1. The matrix effects were slightly higher for LC than GC-compatible pesticides. Risk assessment for pesticides detected in the field and market samples found no hazardous to the consumers except profenofos. The proposed method is highly sensitive, reproducible for the complex matrix like okra, and meets the regulatory standards.

RESUMO

In2Se3 and In2Te3 have great importance in various device fabrications. The present report is based on the annealing-induced phase formation of both In2Se3 and In2Te3 from In10Se70Te20 thin films at different annealing temperatures as found from the XRD analysis and well supported by the Raman study. The average crystallite size increased with a decrease in the dislocation density. The surface morphology changed with annealing and increased in particle size as noticed from the FESEM images. The uniform distribution and presence of constituent elements in the film were verified using EDX data. The increase in transmittance is accompanied by a decrease in extinction coefficient, optical density and increase in skin depth with annealing. The increase in optical bandgap from 0.418 eV to 0.645 eV upon annealing at 250 °C is associated with a decrease in disorder. The steepness parameter increased and the Se-p value decreased with annealing. The refractive index decreased with an increase in oscillator energy and decrease in dispersion energy. The quality factor, dielectric loss, optical conductivity and electrical susceptibility decreased. The optical electronegativity and plasma frequency increased with annealing. There is a significant change in the non-linear susceptibility and non-linear refractive index with annealing. The observed changes in the film structure and optical behaviour are due to the annealing-induced phase formation from the In10Se70Te20 host matrix upon annealing. Such materials are suitable for optoelectronic and phase change devices.

RESUMO

Brinjal and okra are being sprayed withdifferent formulations of imidacloprid which leads to significant deposition of residues on fruits. Here in this study, we validated a method that could detect the traces of imidacloprid residues in a short run time using LC-MS/MS. LOD of 0.001 and LOQ of 0.003 µg/g for brinjal and in compliance with the MRL (0.2 mg/kg). The recovery at different spiking levels recorded 89.67 to 115.55 with an RSDr range of 3.02 and 5.22%. For okra, 0.0025 and 0.008 µg/g were observed as LOD and LOQ, respectively. Recovery was obtained between 88.69 and 93.74%. Precision in terms of repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDwR) was found satisfactory in both matrices. Two applications of imidacloprid 17.8% SL in both vegetables showed faster dissipation initially and persisted up to 15-25 days. Decontamination with 2% salt solution followed by boiling for 15min. removed 96.43 and 73.66% of imidacloprid residues from brinjal and okra, respectively. Risk assessment was found to be less than one (HI < 1) for brinjal and okra matrix and can be safely consumed.

RESUMO

Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) impacts recipients' quality of life (QoL). Few mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) in HCT recipients have shown feasibility, but heterogeneous practices and outcome measures have called into question the actual benefit. We hypothesized that self-guided isha kriya, a 12-minute guided meditation based on the principles of yoga focusing on breathing, awareness, and thought, as a mobile app would improve QoL in the acute HCT setting. This single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2021 to 2022. Autologous and allogeneic HCT recipients age ≥18 years were included. The study was approved by our Institutional Ethics Committee and registered at the Clinical Trial Registry of India, and all participants provided written informed consent. HCT recipients without access to smartphones or regular practitioners of yoga, meditation, or other mind-body practices were excluded. Participants were randomized to the control arm or the isha kriya arm at a 1:1 ratio stratified by type of transplantation. Patients in the isha kriya arm were instructed to perform the kriya twice daily from pre-HCT to day +30 post-HCT. The primary endpoint was QoL summary scores as assessed by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplantation (FACT-BMT) and the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health (PROMIS-GH) questionnaires. The secondary endpoints were the differences in QoL domain scores. The validated questionnaires were self-administered before the intervention and at days +30 and +100 post-HCT. The analysis of endpoints was done on an intention-to-treat basis. Domain and summary scores were calculated for each instrument as recommended by the developers. A P value < .05 was considered to indicate statistical significance, and Cohen's d effect size was used to determine clinical significance. A total of 72 HCT recipients were randomized to the isha kriya and control arms. Patients in the 2 arms were matched for age, sex, diagnosis, and type of HCT. The 2 arms showed no differences in pre-HCT QoL domain, summary, and global scores. At day +30 post-HCT, there was no difference between the arms in the mean FACT-BMT total score (112.9 ± 16.8 for the isha kriya arm versus 101.2 ± 13.9 for the control arm; P = .2) or the mean global health score (global mental health, 45.1 ± 8.6 versus 42.5 ± 7.2 [P = .5]; global physical health, 44.1 ± 6.3 versus 44.1 ± 8.3 [P = .4]) in the 2 groups. Similarly, there were no differences in physical, social, emotional, and functional domain scores. However, the mean bone marrow transplantation (BMT) subscale scores, which addresses BMT-specific QoL concerns, were statistically and clinically significantly higher in the isha kriya arm (27.9 ± 5.1 versus 24.4 ± 9.2; P = .03; Cohen's d = .5; medium effect size). This effect was transient; mean day +100 scores showed no difference (28.3 ± 5.9 versus 26.2 ± 9.4; P = .3). Our data indicate that the isha kriya intervention did not improve the FACT-BMT total and global health scores in the acute HCT setting. However, practicing isha kriya for 1 month was associated with transient improvement in the FACT-BMT subscale scores on day +30 but not on day +100 post-HCT.

RESUMO

Chlorantraniliprole belongsto theanthranilic diamide group is widely used against broad range of lepidopteron pests in a variety of vegetable and rice pests includingyellow rice stem borer and leaf folder. Supervised field trials were conducted duringRabi (2018-2019) and Kharif (2019) to evaluate the dissipation pattern and risk assessment of chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC in paddy ecosystem following foliar application at 30 and 60 g a.i. ha-1 in two different cropping seasons.Modified QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) technique was used for the extraction of CAP residues with acetonitrile and determined by LC-MS/MS (ESI +).The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.01 µg g-1 for paddy leaf, straw, husk, and brown rice, respectively and 0.005 µg g-1 for soil. The average recoveries obtained were 84.30-88.92% from paddy leaf, 94.25-97.81% from straw, 90.21-93.38% from husk, 93.57-96.40% from brown rice and 89.93-91.14% from soil. The residues in paddy leaf dissipated within 35-40 days with a half-life of 4.33-5.07 days in Rabi and 3.92-4.86 days in Kharif at 30 and 60 g a.i. ha-1, respectively. The residues in soil dissipated within 15-21 days with a half-life of 14.44-15.75 days in Rabi and 13.33-14.44 days in Kharif at respective doses. At harvest chlorantraniliprole residues were not detected in straw, husk, and brown rice. The dietary risk of paddy leaf (green fodder) for cattle was found safe for consumption as the hazard index is less than one. Soil ecological risk assessment was found to be less than one (RQ < 0.1) for earthworms (Eisenia foetida) and arthropods (Aphidiusrhopalosiphi). The presentmethod could be useful inthe analysis ofchlorantraniliproleresidues in different cereals and vegetable crop ecosystems and application at recommended dose is safe for the final produce at harvest.

RESUMO

The impact of laser irradiation on thin films results in multiple beneficial modifications of their structural, morphological, nonlinear-linear properties for optoelectronics applications. This work deals with the thermally evaporated Ag10In15S15Se60 films and post-laser irradiation to study the variations in structural and optical properties. The current investigation was carried out for different laser irradiation time durations such as 0, 10, 20, 30, and 60 minutes by 532 nm laser (2.34 eV). According to the X-ray diffraction analysis, all thin films have polycrystalline character. The change in the surface morphology after being exposed to the laser has been checked by FESEM, whereas the presence of constitutional elements has been verified by the EDX study. The related changes with laser irradiation in the optical properties, including both linear and nonlinear, were studied using UV-Vis spectroscopy data. The irradiation caused an enhancement in the transmission, and the absorption edge moved towards a lower wavelength, increasing the bandgap energy from 1.71 eV to 1.88 eV. The refractive index reduced as a result of the film's altered structure. The behaviour of the refractive index satisfies Moss's rule (E g n 4 = const). The nonlinear refractive index, first-order and 3rd order nonlinear susceptibility, is found to be decreased with laser irradiation. The dielectric parameters are also observed to be decreased with irradiation. Considering all the alterations in its properties caused by irradiation, the Ag10In15S15Se60 sample could be a favourable material for various photonic devices.

RESUMO

This paper reports the effects of ion irradiation on the structural, linear, and nonlinear optical properties of thermally evaporated Bi5In30Se65 thin films. The prepared films were irradiated with 30 keV proton ions with different fluences, such as 5 × 1015 ions per cm2, 1 × 1016 ions per cm2, and 5 × 1016 ions per cm2. Structural analysis via X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the non-crystalline nature of the film after ion irradiation with different doses. However, after the irradiation dose, the surface morphology changed, as shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM) images and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images. The compositions of the films were obtained using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Optical analysis via UV-Visible spectroscopy showed a reduction in the transmittance and an increase in the absorption in the higher wavelength region with irradiation. The optical bandgap and Tauc parameter decreased with an increase in the irradiation fluence, which is due to an increase in the irradiation-induced defects and disorder inside the system. The increases in the third order nonlinear susceptibility and the nonlinear refractive index with ion fluence are useful for nonlinear optical applications. The linear refractive index calculated from the transmittance data increased, satisfying Moss's rule. The optical parameters, such as lattice dielectric constant, optical density, skin depth, optical conductivity, real and imaginary dielectric constants, optical conductivity, loss factor, VELF, and SELF, were calculated using several empirical relationships and showed increasing behavior with the ion irradiation dose. The changes obtained in both the linear and nonlinear parameters will be useful for nonlinear optical device applications.

RESUMO

An analytical method in pomegranate whole fruits and arils was developed in LC-MS/MS and validated as per SANTE/12682/2019. Samples were extracted following acetonitrile-based modified QuEChERS protocol. The method was linear and the coefficient of determination ranged between 0.998 and 0.999. Through this method, all the pesticides were detected and quantified at 10 µg kg-1. The accuracy test at 10, 50, and 100 µg kg-1 spiking level recorded recovery between 70 and 120% and RSD less than 15% in both matrices. No significant matrix effect was observed for most pesticides. Intra (RSDr) and inter-day (RSDwr) precision estimated at 50 µg kg-1 found acceptable RSD in both matrices. Measurement uncertainty at 50 µg kg-1 was in the range of 4.02 to 16.12 µg kg-1. Quantifying pesticides in pomegranate whole fruits, peel, and arils using the proposed method is highly suitable and reproducible for 74 pesticides in a short run time of 25.00 min.

RESUMO

Zinc incorporation and the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were investigated in a culture supplemented with three inorganic zinc salts, i.e. zinc sulphate, zinc chloride and zinc nitrate. The cultivation was performed on a yeast extract peptone dextrose (YEPD) broth medium. The growth of yeast was carried out at different concentrations of zinc, i.e. 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg 100 ml-1. It was found that the addition of different zinc sources at 30 mg 100 ml-1 concentration produced higher biomass yield ranging 1.00-1.03 g from 100 ml-1 of cultivation medium, while higher zinc concentration in the medium caused significantly lower yields of yeast biomass. The amount of zinc in yeast cells was determined by an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). The highest amount of zinc in yeast cells was achieved when added in the form of zinc sulphate at a concentration of 120 mg 100 ml-1. The increment of intracellular zinc was up to 9889.67 mg kg-1 of biomass.

RESUMO

Phytoplankton pigment composition was evaluated during the pre-cyclone phase (PRCP) and post-cyclone phase (POCP) of tropical cyclone Fani in the coastal waters of the northwestern Bay of Bengal. The chromatographic analysis revealed higher pigment diversity and an increase in individual pigment concentration during POCP. Chlorophyll-a (chl-a) was the dominant pigment during PRCP and POCP, followed by fucoxanthin. However, chl-a and fucoxanthin concentrations increased 18- and 14-folds, respectively, during the POCP, signifying Bacillariophyta bloom. Complementing microscopy confirmed the dominance of the toxic Bacillariophyta species Pseudo-nitzschia pungens (reaching 5.47 × 104 cells l-1) during the POCP. The cyclone-induced nutrient recharge of the ambient medium could have promoted phytoplankton growth, causing the reappearance of diatom bloom during the later phase of the pre-southwest monsoon. Small-sized Prymnesiophyta and Cryptophyta were not detected microscopically; however, they were identified by chromatographic analysis through pigment markers during POCP.

RESUMO

Ternary quantum processors offer significant potential computational advantages over conventional qubit technologies, leveraging the encoding and processing of quantum information in qutrits (three-level systems). To evaluate and compare the performance of such emerging quantum hardware it is essential to have robust benchmarking methods suitable for a higher-dimensional Hilbert space. We demonstrate extensions of industry standard randomized benchmarking (RB) protocols, developed and used extensively for qubits, suitable for ternary quantum logic. Using a superconducting five-qutrit processor, we find an average single-qutrit process infidelity of 3.8×10^{-3}. Through interleaved RB, we characterize a few relevant gates, and employ simultaneous RB to fully characterize crosstalk errors. Finally, we apply cycle benchmarking to a two-qutrit CSUM gate and obtain a two-qutrit process fidelity of 0.85. Our results present and demonstrate RB-based tools to characterize the performance of a qutrit processor, and a general approach to diagnose control errors in future qudit hardware.

RESUMO

A method for simultaneous determination of carbendazim and tebuconazole residues in cabbage was developed and validated in LC-MS/MS. Samples were extracted and purified following the modified QuEChERS procedure, which enabled the elution of carbendazim and tebuconazole at 0.96 and 5.31 min, respectively. LOD and LOQ were 0.0005 and 0.0015 mg kg-1, respectively. Mean recovery was in the range of 78.94 to 104.89% for carbendazim and 76.07 to 98.62% for tebuconazole. The field samples recorded residues of 0.274 and 0.481 mg kg-1; and 0.194 and 0.392 mg kg-1 at single and double dose for carbendazim and tebuconazole, respectively. Half-life values were 2.17 and 2.99 for carbendazim and 2.74 and 2.81 for tebuconazole at single and double dose, respectively. Decontamination with saltwater wash followed by cooking and lemon water wash found superior in the removal of residues more than 90%.

RESUMO

Pigeonpea grains are important sources of vegetarian proteins. It is the paramount importance to check the pesticide residues due to their frequent use during production. The LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS analytical method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of 79 pesticide residues in pigeonpea. The LOD and LOQ of the analytical method were in the range of 0.53 to 3.97 and 1.60 to 10.05 µg kg-1, respectively, with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.997. Average recoveries were in the range of 80 to 118.8%, with the RSD of less than 15%. Measurement uncertainty (Ux) for pesticides was in the range of 3.42 to 12.76 µg kg-1 evaluated at 50 µg kg-1. The method was applied to analyze the sample collected from the farmer's field. This method could be useful for routine analysis of selected pesticide residue for monitoring purposes.

RESUMO

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) interfere with the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a vital enzyme that regulates the functioning of the nervous system, resulting in acetylcholine (Ach) accumulation at the synapses and myoneural junctions. It remains unknown whether the commonly used OPs in South India also interfere with the AChE activity and their toxicokinetics in humans remains poorly understood. We collected peripheral blood samples from OP-associated suicide cases (hospitalised) and analysed the pesticide concentration and AChE activity, and the toxicokinetics of six commonly used pesticides. LC-MS/MS was used for the estimation of pesticide concentration. Based on a comparison of six pesticide kinetic profiles and toxicokinetic parameters, we concluded that chlorpyrifos ingestion resulted in the highest concentration of chlopyrifos among the identified pesticides, followed by acephate, triazophos, propanil, while dimethoate exhibited the lowest concentration. Based on a time-course analysis, we observed a faster elimination phase for monocrotophos and dimethoate. We observed that there was a significant decrease in the mean concentration of monocrotophos (64 ng/mL) (P = 0.015), while the mean value of AChE (1.08 unit/mL) increased over time. While monocrotophos and dimethoate elimination phases were remarkable in human subjects, the other pesticides did notdemonstrate similar elimination phases owing to their low rate of metabolism and high stability.
