RESUMO

Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome is one of the genetic disorders involving disturbances in mucopolysaccaride metabolism, due to deficiency of aryl sulfatase-B which leads to accumulation of dermatan sulfate in tissues and their excretion in urine. The diseases has several oral and dental manifestations, is first diagnosed on the basis of clinical findings. It is characterized by coarse facial features, normal intelligence, organomegaly, enlarged head, short neck, corneal clouding, enlarged tongue, and prominent metachromatic inclusions in leukocytes. Death is usually a result of either respiratory tract infection or cardiac disease, which is caused by the deposition of mucopolysaccharides. An 18-year-old with Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome is described in this article with multiple dentigerous cysts as the first presentation.

RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of PRF in osseous regeneration after enucleation of cystic lesions. The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to evaluate osseous regeneration radiographically with the use of PRF in intrabony defects after cystic enucleation. (2) To evaluate the degree of bone density in intrabony defects with the use of PRF postoperatively after 1st, 3rd, and 6th months. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 20 cases of cystic lesions were treated using PRF after cystic enucleation. Follow-up radiographs (orthopantomogram) were taken 1st, 3rd, and 6th months postoperatively. Bone density was measured with grayscale histogram using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software. RESULTS: The subsequent follow-up examinations revealed progressive, predictable, and significant radiographic osseous regeneration. CONCLUSION: The use of PRF in management of cystic lesions seems to be a novel therapeutic approach promoting faster osseous regeneration within 6 months postoperatively; however, further study is required with larger sample size and with a control group.

RESUMO

A case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the mandible is reported. A 22-year-old man consulted us for hypoesthesia of the right lower lip. Panorama X-ray film showed a radiolucent lesion in the right mandibular body. A diagnosis of a metastatic tumor to the mandible from the right kidney was made after evaluation by computed tomography and bone scan with Tc99 methyl diphosphonate which also revealed multiple bone metastases. Histologically diagnosis was clear cell variant of RCC. Patient has been put on radiotherapy for symptomatic treatment and a molecularly targeted drug. The therapy effectively stopped the progressive growth of oral and other metastatic lesions. The quality of life is relatively well maintained with tolerable adverse effects. The patient is still on our follow-up with an improved quality of life.
