RESUMO

Solid refrigerants exhibiting a caloric effect upon applying external stimuli are receiving attention as one of the next-generation refrigeration technologies. Herein, we report a new inorganic refrigerant, rubidium cyano-bridged manganese-iron-cobalt ternary metal assembly (cyano-RbMnFeCo). Cyano-RbMnFeCo shows a reversible barocaloric effect with large reversible adiabatic temperature changes of 74 K (from 57 °C to -17 °C) at 340 MPa, and 85 K (from 88 °C to 3 °C) at 560 MPa. Such large reversible adiabatic temperature changes have yet to be reported among caloric effects in solid-solid phase transition refrigerants. The reversible refrigerant capacity is 26000 J kg-1 and the temperature window is 142 K. Additionally, cyano-RbMnFeCo shows barocaloric effects even at low pressures, e.g., reversible adiabatic temperature change is 21 K at 90 MPa. Furthermore, direct measurement of the temperature change using a thermocouple shows +44 K by applying pressure. The temperature increase and decrease upon pressure application and release are repeated over 100 cycles without any degradation of the performance. This material series also possesses a high thermal conductivity value of 20.4 W m-1 K-1. The present barocaloric material may realize a high-efficiency solid refrigerant.

Knowledge of the magnetic domain is indispensable for understanding the magnetostatic properties of magnets. However, to date, the magnetic domain has not yet been reported in the field of molecule-based magnets. Herein, we study the magnetic domains of molecule-based magnets. Two magnetic films of iron/chromium hexacyanidochromate FexCr1-x[Cr(CN)6]2/3·5H2O (x = 0; Film 1 and x = 0.2; Film 2) were prepared for investigation. The temperature evolution of surface magnetization was measured using magnetic force microscopy. Film 1 showed a magnetic domain below Curie temperature (TC) and its positive-magnetic polarization increased monotonously with decreasing temperature, while Film 2 showed positive magnetic polarization below TC and switches from positive to negative magnetization through a demagnetization state at 146 K. This study originally reports the temperature variation of the magnetization state at the magnetization reversal. The magnetic domains appeared as a maze pattern with an approximate domain size of one-to-several micrometers. This work shows that research on molecule-based magnets can be expanded from magnetochemistry to the magnetostatic engineering of bulk magnets, molecule-based magnetostatic engineering.

This study evaluated the biomechanical strength of a novel two-layer meniscal sheet scaffold (MSS) consisting of polyglycolic acid and poly-Llactic acid/caprolactone and investigated meniscal healing using wrapping treatment for meniscal defect model in a rabbit. The ultimate failure load of the MSS was determined using a tensile testing machine, in vitro. A 2-mm cylindrical defects were created at the medial meniscus of rabbit knees (n = 40). Each knee was assigned to one of two groups. The defect group was not treated and the MSS group underwent wrapping treatment with MSS. Menisci were harvested at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks post-implantation. The regenerated meniscus and defect size were evaluated using macrophotographs. Ishida scores for regenerated tissue were determined using Safranin-O/Fast Green staining. Immunohistochemical analysis of Ki-67 for cell proliferation, anti-type I and II collagen antibodies for structure of the regenerated tissue was elucidated. Medial femoral cartilage was stained with Safranin-O/Fast Green and evaluated with Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) scores. The strength of MSS was maintained over 90% from initial time point to 4 weeks after hydrolysis and over 60% of the strength remained at 8 weeks. The surface area of the meniscus was larger and the defect size smaller in the MSS group than in the defect group at 8 and 12 weeks. Ishida scores revealed that the MSS group improved significantly compared to that of the defect group at all postsurgery time points evaluated. Ki-67 positive cell ratio was significantly higher in the MSS group. OARSI score of the defect group was significantly higher and the defect group showed progressive degeneration in the articular cartilage from 8 to 12 weeks. Overall, wrapping meniscus defects with MSS was useful for accelerating meniscal healing from an early stage and beneficial for tissue regeneration and promoting extracellular matrix maturation.

The inner avascular zone of the meniscus has limited healing capacity as the area is poorly vascularized. Although peptide hydrogels have been reported to regenerate bone and cartilage, their effect on meniscus regeneration remains unknown. We tested whether the self-assembling peptide hydrogel scaffold KI24RGDS stays in the meniscal lesion and facilitates meniscal repair and regeneration in an induced rabbit meniscal defect model. Full-thickness (2.0 mm diameter) cylindrical defects were introduced into the inner avascular zones of the anterior portions of the medial menisci of rabbit knees (n = 40). Right knee defects were left empty (control group) while the left knee defects were transplanted with peptide hydrogel (KI24RGDS group). Macroscopic meniscus scores were significantly higher in the KI24RGDS group than in the control group at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery. Histological examinations including quantitative and qualitative scores indicated that compared with the control group, the reparative tissue in the meniscus was significantly enhanced in the KI24RGDS group at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the reparative tissue induced by KI24RGDS at 12 weeks postimplantation was positive for Type I and II collagen. KI24RGDS is highly biocompatible and biodegradable, with strong stiffness, and a three dimensional structure mimicking native extracellular matrix and RGDS sequences that enhance cell adhesion and proliferation. This in vivo study demonstrated that KI24RGDS remained in the meniscal lesion and facilitated the repair and regeneration in a rabbit meniscal defect model.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate meniscal regeneration and prevent cartilage degeneration using wrapping treatment for meniscal horizontal tears that have been difficult to repair in rabbits. DESIGN: Thirty knees from 15 Japanese white rabbits were divided into the horizontal (horizontal tears) or wrapping (horizontal tears with wrapping treatment) groups. Horizontal tears were created and wrapped with a sheet scaffold containing polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, and polycaprolactone. The meniscus was stained with Safranin-O/Fast Green and evaluated with modified Pauli scores at 8, 12, and 16 weeks after implantation (n = 5). Cell morphology was determined with hematoxylin and eosin staining. Mature collagen was confirmed with Picrosirius Red staining. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) for inflammation, Ki-67 for proliferation, and type II collagen for regeneration was performed. Medial femoral cartilage was stained with Safranin-O/Fast Green and evaluated with the Osteoarthritis Research Society International score at 8 and 16 weeks. RESULTS: The wrapping group had significantly better regeneration than the horizontal group, especially at 16 weeks (P < 0.05). Wrapping treatment induced fibrochondrocyte-like cells at 16 weeks. After wrapping treatment, iNOS was overexpressed at 8 weeks, Ki-67 at 8 and 12 weeks, and type II collagen at 16 weeks. Cartilage degeneration in the wrapping group did not progress significantly compared with that in the horizontal group at 16 weeks (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Wrapping treatment for meniscal horizontal tears induced meniscal regeneration as the sheet scaffold might induce intrinsic and extrinsic repair. Regaining the meniscal function by the wrapping treatment prevented cartilage degeneration.

In the era of Big Data and the Internet of Things, data archiving is a key technology. From this viewpoint, magnetic recordings are drawing attention because they guarantee long-term data storage. To archive an enormous amount of data, further increase of the recording density is necessary. Herein a new magnetic recording methodology, "focused-millimeter-wave-assisted magnetic recording (F-MIMR)," is proposed. To test this methodology, magnetic films based on epsilon iron oxide nanoparticles are prepared and a focused-millimeter-wave generator is constructed using terahertz (THz) light. Irradiating the focused millimeter wave to epsilon iron oxide instantly switches its magnetic pole direction. The spin dynamics of F-MIMR are also calculated using the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert model considering all of the spins in an epsilon iron oxide nanoparticle. In F-MIMR, the heat-up effect of the recording media is expected to be suppressed. Thus, F-MIMR can be applied to high-density magnetic recordings.

Ionic conductors serve as solid electrolytes for fuel cells and batteries, whereas polar crystals such as ferroelectrics and pyroelectrics-which are typically insulating materials-are used in electronic devices. Here we show a material that combines superionic conductivity with a polar crystal structure at room temperature. This three-dimensional anionic network is based on -Fe-N≡C-Mo- units, with Cs cations hosted in every other pore. In the resulting Cs1.1Fe0.95[Mo(CN)5(NO)]·4H2O material, the negative and positive charges of the framework and Cs+ ions, respectively, are non-symmetrically shifted in the c-axis direction of the unit cell, and spontaneous electric polarization is generated, in turn leading to second harmonic generation (SHG). Additionally, this material is a superionic conductor (with an ionic conductivity value of 4 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 318 K). Furthermore, the ionic conductivity significantly decreases under 532 nm light irradiation (from 1 × 10-3 S cm-1 to 6 × 10-5 S cm-1 at room temperature) and, when irradiation stops, returns to its original value within ~1 h.

Lanthanide(III)-based coordination complexes have been explored as a source of bifunctional molecular materials combining Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior with visible-to-near-infrared photoluminescence. In pursuit of more advanced multifunctionality, the next target is to functionalize crystalline solids based on emissive molecular nanomagnets toward high proton conductivity and an efficient luminescent thermometric effect. Here, a unique multifunctional molecule-based material, (H5O2)2(H)[YbIII(hmpa)4][CoIII(CN)6]2·0.2H2O (1, hmpa = hexamethylphosphoramide), composed of molecular {YbCo2}3- anions noncovalently bonded to acidic H5O2+ and H+ ions, is reported. The resulting YbIII complexes present a slow magnetic relaxation below 6 K and room temperature NIR 4f-centered photoluminescence sensitized by [Co(CN)6]3- ions. The microporous framework, built on these emissive magnetic molecules, exhibits a high proton conductivity of the H-hopping mechanism reaching σ of 1.7 × 10-4 S·cm-1 at 97% relative humidity, which classifies 1 as a superionic conductor. Moreover, the emission pattern is strongly temperature-dependent which was utilized in achieving a highly sensitive single-center luminescent thermometer with a relative thermal sensitivity, Sr > 1% K-1 in the 50-175 K range. This work shows an unprecedented combination of magnetic, optical, and electrical functionalities in a single phase working as a proton conductive NIR-emissive thermometer based on Single-Molecule Magnets.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the preoperative patient-related factors affecting the soft tissue balancing in cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty. This is an important clinical issue, as the acquisition of adequate soft tissue balancing is essential for successful outcomes. METHODS: The study group included 59 knees treated for medial compartment osteoarthritis. The extension gap was measured using the newly electric tensor that enables continuous quantification of a distraction force ranging from 0 to 40 lbf. We performed regression analyses to identify the relationship between preoperative factors and the extension gap. RESULTS: Patient height, weight, and percent mechanical axis showed univariate correlation with the extension gap of either 30 lbf or 40 lbf. In the multivariate regression analysis without encountering multicollinearity, percent mechanical axis was inversely associated with the extension gap (t-value = -2.31, p = 0.02 for 30 lbf; and t-value = -2.39; p = 0.02 for 40lbf) as a significant independent factor. CONCLUSIONS: We revealed the significant influence of several factors on the absolute value of the extension gap. Particularly, the severity of preoperative coronal alignment was a statistically independent explanatory variable, and the extension gap was overvalued in knees with severe varus deformity. This influence should be considered when comparing different individual cases longitudinally. Our feasible strategies could lead to a better understanding about the soft tissue balancing in total knee arthroplasty.

Vapochromic behaviour of porous crystals is beneficial for facile and rapid detection of gaseous molecules without electricity. Toward this end, tailored molecular designs have been established for metal-organic, covalent-bonded and hydrogen-bonded frameworks. Here, we explore the hydrochromic chemistry of a van der Waals (VDW) porous crystal. The VDW porous crystal VPC-1 is formed from a novel aromatic dendrimer having a dibenzophenazine core and multibranched carbazole dendrons. Although the constituent molecules are connected via VDW forces, VPC-1 maintains its structural integrity even after desolvation. VPC-1 exhibits reversible colour changes upon uptake/release of water molecules due to the charge transfer character of the constituent dendrimer. Detailed structural analyses reveal that the outermost carbazole units alone are mobile in the crystal and twist simultaneously in response to water vapour. Thermodynamic analysis suggests that the sigmoidal water sorption is induced by the affinity alternation of the pore surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic.

The accumulated heat energy of a heat-storage material is typically released over time. If a heat-storage material could preserve its accumulated heat energy for a prolonged period, the applicability of such materials would be expanded greatly. Herein we report a newly fabricated heat-storage material that can store latent heat energy for a long period and release the heat energy upon demand by applying an extremely low pressure. This material is a block-type lambda trititanium pentoxide (block-type λ-Ti3O5). The block-type λ-phase accumulates a large heat energy of 237 kJ L-1 and exhibits a pressure-induced phase transition to beta trititanium pentoxide. The pressure-induced phase transition occurs by applying only several tens of bars, and half of the fraction transforms by 7 MPa (70 bar). Such a low-pressure-responsive heat-storage ceramic is effective to reuse excessive heat in automobiles or waste heat at industrial factories.

BACKGROUND: Meniscal injury is a severe impediment to movement and results in accelerated deterioration of the knee joint. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of a novel meniscal scaffold prepared from polyglycolic acid coated with polylactic acid/caprolactone on the treatment of meniscal injury in a mini pig model. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: The model was established with a 10-mm resection at the anterior medial meniscus on both knee joints. A scaffold was implanted in the right knee joint. The meniscal scaffold was inserted and sutured next to the native meniscus. The histological analysis was performed to determine meniscal regeneration with safranin O staining, cell proliferation with PCNA, inflammation with TNF, and collagen structure and production with picrosirius red and immunofluorescence. Cartilage degeneration was evaluated with Safranin O. Meniscal regeneration and joint fluid were evaluated with magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Although compressive stress and elastic modulus were significantly lower in the scaffold than in the native porcine menisci, ultimate tensile stress was similar. Implanted scaffolds were covered with tissue beginning at 4 weeks, with increased migration of proliferating cells to the implant area at 4 and 8 weeks. Scaffolds were absorbed with freshly produced collagen at 24 weeks. Cartilage degeneration was significantly lower in the meniscus-implanted group than in the meniscectomy group. Magnetic resonance imaging results did not show severe accumulation of joint fluids, suggesting negligible inflammation. Density of the implanted menisci was comparable with that of the native menisci. CONCLUSION: Meniscal scaffold prepared from polyglycolic acid has therapeutic potential for meniscal regeneration. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This meniscal scaffold can improve biological knee reconstruction and prevent the increase of total knee arthroplasty.

PURPOSE: Treatment of meniscal injury is important for osteoarthritis (OA) prevention. Meniscus cells are divided between inner and outer cells, which have different characteristics and vascularity. We evaluated the effects of hyaluronic acid (HA) on the proliferation and migration of human inner and outer meniscus cells, and investigated the underlying healing mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral menisci from 18 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty were used. Meniscus cells were harvested from the outer and inner menisci and evaluated using migration and proliferation assays after treatment with HA or chondroitin sulfate (CS). The effects of HA on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)-induced apoptosis and gene expression were evaluated. RESULTS: Cell migration and proliferation were increased by HA in a concentration-dependent manner, in both inner and outer meniscus cells. PGE2-induced apoptosis and caspase-3/7 activity were suppressed by HA in both inner and outer meniscus cells, and these effects were blocked by an anti-CD44 antibody. COL2A1 and ACAN mRNA levels were upregulated following HA treatment of inner meniscus cells. MMP13 mRNA was downregulated following CS stimulation of both inner and outer meniscus cells. These results suggest that CS treatment suppresses the inflammatory reaction rather than providing meniscal restoration. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways were activated by HA in both types of meniscus cells; these effects were blocked by treatment with an anti-CD44 antibody. CONCLUSIONS: HA promoted human meniscus regeneration by inhibiting apoptosis, promoting cell migration, and accelerating cell proliferation, potentially through the PI3K/MAPK pathway via the CD44 receptor.

PURPOSE: To evaluate patellofemoral congruity after opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) and hybrid HTO. METHODS: Twenty-four knees with hybrid HTO and 24 with OWHTO were evaluated in this study. The Caton-Deschamps and modified Miura-Kawamura indices were used to evaluate pre- and post-operative patellar heights for both types of surgery. Tibial tuberosity-trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance, patellar tilt, and medial and lateral joint space at the patellofemoral joint were compared. Anterior knee pain was assessed using the Kujala anterior knee pain scale. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the correction angles of the hybrid HTO and OWHTO. Pre- and post-operative values for the Caton-Deschamps and modified Miura-Kawamura indices in patients who underwent hybrid HTO changed from 0.90 to 0.94 and from 0.95 to 1.03, respectively, with no significant differences noted. Following OWHTO, these values decreased significantly from 0.91 to 0.73 and from 1.06 to 0.84, respectively (p < 0.01). The post-operative patellar height after OWHTO was significantly lower than that after hybrid HTO (p < 0.01). After hybrid HTO, the TT-TG distance decreased significantly from 11.4 to 7.4 (p < 0.01), but it did not change significantly after OWHTO. Although pre- and post-operative patellar tilt were not altered significantly in either group, the medial joint space of the patellofemoral joint was significantly increased post-operatively following hybrid HTO (p = 0.035). The pre-operative Kujala scores were significantly lower in the hybrid HTO group, but post-operative scores improved in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid HTO provides a better post-operative patellofemoral joint than does OWHTO with regard to patellar position and reduction of the TT-TG distance, as well as improved clinical outcomes. Hybrid HTO, rather than OWHTO, is the preferred technique for the treatment of varus knees combined with patellofemoral osteoarthritis. PURPOSE: Medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) induces a lower patellar position, and the subsequent degree of patellar movement may not be predicted preoperatively. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between preoperative and postoperative patellar height based on the correction angle of OWHTO and to create a formula to predict the appearance of patella baja following OWHTO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five knees with varus knee osteoarthritis treated with OWHTO were included in this study. The Caton-Deschamps index was used to evaluate patellar height preoperatively and postoperatively, and the cut-off value for preoperative parameters was determined by a receiver operating characteristic curve to determine the risk ratio for postoperative patella baja. RESULTS: The Caton-Deschamps index significantly decreased from 0.93 to 0.77 after OWHTO ( p < 0.01). The OWHTO correction angle negatively correlated with the delta Caton-Deschamps index ( r = -0.44, p < 0.01), and a 1.7% decrease in the Caton-Deschamps index was shown with a 1° correction angle. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that a Caton-Deschamps index of 0.8 was the cutoff for OWHTO; knees with a preoperative Caton-Deschamps index of < 0.8 tended to develop patella baja after OWHTO, with a risk ratio of 9.5 (95% confidence interval [4.3-20.7]). CONCLUSIONS: OWHTO can induce patella baja, and a 1.7% decrease in the Caton-Deschamps index was shown with a 1°-correction angle. A preoperative Caton-Deschamps index < 0.8 should be considered a risk factor for postoperative patella baja. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Retrospective study, Level IV.

RESUMO

As an adsorbent of gaseous ammonia, cobalt hexacyanocobaltate (CoII3[CoIII(CN)6]2) was proved to have good sorption even at high temperatures, with thermal recyclability in sorption-desorption cycles. The maximum sorption capacities evaluated with a dual-site Langmuir model are 25.2, 18.6, 8.6, and 2.1 mmol g-1 at 20, 100, 150, and 250 °C, respectively.

RESUMO

Low-profile fixation devices for medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) were developed in order to avoid skin irritation and additional invasion. However, the low-profile system is associated with additional risks. We report three cases of locking pin back out with the low-profile locking plate system for medial OWHTO.

A novel three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymer with the formula (C3N2H5)4[MnCr2(ox)6]·5H2O (2), where ox = oxalate and C3N2H5 = imidazolium cation, is reported. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that this porous coordination polymer adopts a chiral three-dimensional quartz-like architecture, with the guest imidazolium cations and water molecules being hosted in its pores. This novel multifunctional material exhibits both a ferromagnetic ordering at TC = 3.0 K, related to the host MnCr2 network, and high proton conductivity [1.86 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 295 K and 88% relative humidity (RH)] due to the presence of the acidic imidazolium cations and free water molecules. The similarity of the structure of compound 2 to that of the previously reported analogous compound (NH4)4[MnCr2(ox)6]·4H2O, (1), also allows us to analyse, to a certain extent, the effect of the acidity of the proton donating guest molecules on proton conduction properties. 2 hosts, in one-dimensional (1D) channels, imidazolium cations, which are more acidic than the ammonium ones in 1 and, as a consequence, 2 shows higher proton conduction than 1, highlighting the effect of the pKa of the proton donating guest molecules on proton conductivity.

Recent developments in terahertz technologies provide new tools for analysis, inspection, and nondestructive sensing. If a heavy atom is encapsulated in a cage of a porous material, the atom should vibrate slowly and resonate with a low-frequency terahertz light. From this perspective, a cyanide-bridged metal framework is a suitable system because it contains many cages that can adsorb Cs ions. Herein we show the vibration mode of a Cs ion in a cage of a cyanide-bridged metal framework. First-principles phonon mode calculations and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) measurements indicate that the vibration mode of a Cs ion in a cyanide-bridged manganese-iron framework is at 1.5 THz, which is significantly apart from other lattice vibrations. Taking advantage of this feature, we develop a THz-light detection method for Cs ions, which is useful for non-contact sensing of Cs ions in dangerous environments or harmful circumstances.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate various types of meniscus scaffolds that mimic the meniscus structure, and to establish a novel cell-free meniscus scaffold with polyglycolic acid or poly-l-lactic acid. Four types of scaffolds were implanted into Japanese white rabbits: poly-l-lactic acid sponge poly-l-lactic acid, PGA-coated PLLA sponge, PGA lamination, and film-coated PGA lamination. Samples were harvested at 8 and 12 weeks after implantation, and a compression stress test was performed. The meniscus size and Ishida scores were evaluated for regenerated tissue. Immunohistochemistry was analyzed by anti-type I, II and X collagen antibodies to investigate the structure of the regenerated tissue, and by anti-iNOS antibody to investigate the inflammatory tissue of the meniscus. The cell nuclei of lymphocytes and foreign body multinucleated giant cells were counted in hematoxylin and eosin staining. Modified Mankin scores for cartilage degeneration were used for assessment after Safranin-O/Fast Green staining. The biomechanical test showed that l- and film-coated PGA lamination exhibited greater strength than s- and PGA-coated PLLA sponge. At 12 weeks, the size of meniscus and the Ishida score in implanted film-coated PGA lamination were improved significantly compared with the defect groups. The type II collagen staining intensity in the PGA lamination lamination is significantly higher than the defect at eight weeks. The staining intensity of iNOS and number of lymphocytes significantly increased in sponge poly-l-lactic acid at eight weeks, and increased in p-PLLA at 12 weeks. Foreign body multinucleated giant cells in implantation groups appeared, especially at eight weeks. The Mankin score for film-coated PGA lamination was significantly lower than for the defect at 12 weeks. Novel meniscal scaffolds especially PGA should possess not only biological but also biomechanical functions. In conclusions, film-coated PGA lamination was the beneficial property for meniscus scaffold from the points of better biomechanical function, good regeneration, and less inflammation with chondroprotective effects.
