RESUMO
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: To study hemorheological factors in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease (not secondary to embolic cardiopathy). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed 40 patients with an average age of 64.5 years; 26 had cerebral infarcts due to alterations in major blood vessels and 14 had lacunar infarcts. Forty persons with no cerebrovascular disease acted as controls. The hematological studies were done between three weeks and six months after the initial ictus. RESULTS: Blood viscosity and plasma fibrinogen concentrations were significantly higher in the patients than in the controls. However, hematocrit values were similar in all three groups studied. With regard to the hematocrit, fibrinogen levels and blood viscosity, no differences were seen between the group with damage to the great vessels and those with lacunar infarcts.

Thirty two patients admitted to the "Gral. Calixto García" Hospital for infectious pneumonopathies acquired outside and within hospital were studied. Each patient underwent 8 blood cultures in order to determine most frequent causal agents in our environment thus enabling the institution of an adequate antibiotic therapy. Grampositive germs, specifically staphylococcus, prevailed in extra hospitalary bronchopneumonopathies and gramnegative germs, specially Klebiella, prevailed in the case of intra-hospitalary infections. The negative effect of the antimicrobial therapy prior to sample obtention on the results of bacterial examinations is stressed.

A 20-year-old female patient who presented papylo-erythematous lesions with intense pruritus and arciform sinuous lesions in the back and gluteal regions during a stay at a beach is presented. A cutaneous larva migrans was diagnosed through biopsy. A brief bibliographic review of this parasitologic entity is made.
