RESUMO

Twenty surface sediment samples were gathered from Chasma Lake, deciding the radionuclides 137Cs, 226Ra, 228Ra, 232Th, and 40K and their associated hazard indices. The deliberate radionuclide activities of present research have been contrasted with earlier research, and acquired outcomes in the present study are found below the results in the world. The radiation hazard indices following the presence of natural radionuclides in sediment samples were estimated, and the results assigned the values of all the determined radiological indices found inside the worldwide suggested limits. It was concluded from the current review that the sediment of Chashma Lake is safe for construction and agriculture and does not make radiation dangerous to the nearby local area of the lake.

RESUMO

This study is concentrated on the radiological risk assessment of sixteen surface sediment samples recovered from Namal Lake, District Mianwali, Punjab, Pakistan. The activity of 137Cs, 40 K, 226Ra, 228Ra, and 232Th was carried out with the help of a high purity germanium detector (HPGe) in the sediment, varied in the ranges of > 0.02-3.73 ± 1.31, 98.32 ± 21.45-341.02 ± 58.67, 18.34 ± 2.16-34.23 ± 4.34, 1.62 ± .30-2.34 ± .52, and 0.14 ± 0.10-2.34 ± 0.59 Bq kg-1 with average values 0.74 ± 0.29, 237.26 ± 37.97, 25.06 ± 4.74, 1.97 ± 0.39, and 1.73 ± 0.33 Bq kg-1, respectively. The measured concentrations in the current study have been compared with other earlier studies in the world. The data was also used for determining the other useful parameters like radium equivalent activity, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose rate, and external and internal hazards index to assess the radiological risk assessment for the environment around the study area. The ERICA Tool software was also applied for radiological risk assessment for lake fish due to the radioactivity present in the lake sediments. It was concluded from the results of ERICA tool that the risk quotient in this study is less than one indicating that no toxic effects of radioactivity for Namal Lake fish.

RESUMO

There is a growing need to introduce eco-friendly and sustainable procedures for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles that include a mild reaction conditions, simple reaction setup, use of nontoxic medium such as water and plant extract, cost effectiveness as well as greater efficiency for biomedical and catalytic applications. For this purpose, small and highly dispersed palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were prepared by eco-friendly and cost effective green method using water soluble leaf extract of Sapium sebiferum as a reducing and capping agent. The formation of PdNPs was optimized at various temperatures i.e. (30°C, 60°C and 90°C) and different leaves extract (5mL and 10mL) in order to control their size and shape. The results indicated that PdNPs synthesized at 10mL leaf extract concentration and 60°C temperature have small sized (5nm) and spherical shape. The nanoparticles formation, their dispersion, size and shape were confirmed by various characterization techniques i.e. UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Dynamic light scattering technique (DLS) analysis. The biologically synthesized PdNPs were tested for size dependent photo degradation of methylene blue and inactivation of bacteria. The PdNPs synthesized at optimized condition (10mL extract concentration and 60°C) have strong photo catalytic activity and reduced 90% methylene blue in 70min. The optimized PdNPs also showed strong bacterial inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus 29(±0.8mm), Bacillus subtilis 19(±0.6mm) and pseudomonas aeruginosa 11(±0.6mm). The results of this examination demonstrate effective applications of extremely active PdNPs.

RESUMO

Water purification is one of the worldwide problem and most of the conventional methods are associated with a number of drawbacks. Therefore it is the need of the day to develop new methods and materials to overcome the problem of water purification. In this research work we present a simple and green approach to synthesize silver decorated titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2) nanocomposite with an efficient photo catalytic activities. Phytochemicals of the Cestrum nocturnum leaf extract were used to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite. To confirm the formation, crystal structure, particle size and shape of green synthesized nanoparticles and nanocomposite, they were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The AgNPs, TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 were evaluated for photo degradation of methylene blue (MB) and photo inhibition of Bacteria. The bio-synthesized Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite was observed to have strong catalytic activities for photo reduction of MB and photo inactivation of bacteria as compared to bare AgNPs and TiO2. In the presence of Ag/TiO2, 90% of MB was degraded only in 40min of irradiation. Alternatively the bare AgNPs and TiO2 degraded less than 30% and 80% respectively of MB even in more than 100min of irradiation. Similarly the Ag/TiO2 has very strong photo inhibition efficiency towards Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The zone of inhibition of irradiated Ag/TiO2 nanocomposites against E. coli and P. aeruginosa was 19mm and 17mm respectively which was two times higher than in dark. These promising photocatalytic activities of nanocomposite may be due to the highly decorated AgNPs over the surface of TiO2.

RESUMO

This study is aimed at the determination of the activity concentrations of naturally occuring and technologically enhanced levels of radiation in 34 representative soil samples that have been collected from an inshore oil field area which was found to have, in a previous study, the highest observed value of 226Ra concentration among 129 soil samples. The activity concentrations of 238U and 226Ra have been inferred from gamma-ray transitions associated with their decay progenies and measured using a hyper-pure germanium detector. Details of the sample preparation and the gamma-ray spectroscopic analysis techniques are presented, together with the values of the activity concentrations associated with the naturally occuring radionuclide chains for all the samples collected from NW Dukhan. Discrete-line, gamma-ray energy transitions from spectral lines ranging in energy from ∼100 keV up to 2.6 MeV have been associated with characteristic decays of the various decay products within the 235.8U and 232Th radioactive decay chains. These data have been analyzed, under the assumption of secular equilibrium for the U and Th decay chains. Details of the sample preparation and the gamma-ray spectroscopic analysis techniques are presented. The weighted mean value of the activity concentrations of 226Ra in one of the samples was found to be around a factor of 2 higher than the values obtained in the previous study and approximately a factor of 10 higher than the accepted worldwide average value of 35 Bq/kg. The weighted mean values of the activity concentrations of 232Th and 40K were also deduced and found to be within the worldwide average values of 30 and 400 Bq/kg, respectively. Our previous study reported a value of 201.9±1.5Stat.±13Syst.Bq/kg for 226Ra in one sample and further investigation in the current work determined a measured value for 226Ra of 342.00±1.9Stat.±25Syst.Bq/kg in a sample taken from the same locality. This is significantly higher than all the other investigated soil samples in the current and previous works. Notably, the Th levels in the same sample are within the worldwide average expectations, implying that the increased 226Ra concentration arises from TENORM processes.
