RESUMO

Introducing one or two alkynyl-iron moieties onto a carbo[6]helicene results in organometallic helicenes (2 a,b) that display strong chiroptical activity combined with efficient redox-triggered switching. The neutral and oxidized forms have been studied in detail by electronic and vibrational circular dichroism, as well as by Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed and spectra were assigned with the help of first-principles calculations. In particular, a recently developed method for ROA calculations under resonance conditions has been used to study the intricate resonance effects on the ROA spectrum of mono-iron ethynylhelicene 2 a.

RESUMO

The synthesis, self-assembly, and semiconducting properties of a series of disk-like truxenone derivatives, functionalized with three peripheral long alkyl chains, either directly attached or distanced by linking phenyl or ethynyl groups, are reported. The strategy of distancing the alkyl chains from the central aromatic cores induces in these discotics well-ordered columnar assemblies and has a favorable effect on their charge-carrier mobility. Electron mobility values above 1 cm2 V-1 S-1 were determined for a truxenone functionalized with three peripheral decynyl chains by means of the space charge-limited current technique. DFT calculations help to rationalize the high mobility values found for these new truxenone-based systems, indicating efficient intermolecular electronic couplings (fostered by a favorable stacking configuration) and moderate intramolecular reorganization energies for electrons in the origin of such high mobilities.

RESUMO

We have performed a multiscale approach to study the influence of peripheral substitution in the semiconducting properties of discotic liquid-crystalline triindoles. Charge carrier mobility as high as 1.4 cm2 V-1 s-1 was experimentally reported for triindoles substituted with alkynyl chains on the periphery (Gómez-Lor et al. Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2011, 50, 7399-7402). In this work, our goal is to get a deeper understanding of both the molecular electronic structure and microscopic factors affecting the charge transport properties in triindoles as a function of the spacer group connecting the central cores with the external alkyl chains (i.e., alkyne or phenyl spacers groups). To this end, we first perform Quantum Mechanical (QM) calculations to assess how the peripheral substitution affects the electronic structure and the internal reorganization energy. Secondly, boxes of stacked molecules were built and relaxed through molecular dynamics to obtain realistic structures. Conformational analysis and calculations of transfer integrals for closed neighbours were performed. Our results show that the insertion of ethynyl spacers between the central aromatic core and the flexible peripheral chains results in lower reorganization energies and enhanced intermolecular order within the stacks with a preferred cofacial 60° staggered conformation, which would result in high charge-carrier mobilities in good agreement with the experimental data. This work allows a deeper understanding of charge carrier mobility in columnar phases, linking the structural order at the molecular level to the property of interest, i.e. the charge carrier mobility. We hope that this understanding will improve the design of systems at the supramolecular level aiming at obtaining a more defined conducting channel, higher mobility and smaller fluctuations within the column.

RESUMO

Conducting polymers can be synthesized by irreversible diradical monomer polymerization. A reversible version of this reaction consisting of the formation/dissociation of σ-dimers and σ-polymers from a stable quinonoidal diradical precursor is described. The reaction reversibility is made by a quinonoidal molecule which changes its structure to an aromatic species by forming weak and long intermolecular C-C single bonds. The reaction provokes a giant chromic effect of about 2.5 eV. The two opposite but complementary quinonoidal and aromatic tautomers provide the Janus faces of the reactants and products which produces the observed chromic effect. A reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the variety of final products starting with structurally very similar reactants. These reversible reactions, covering an unusual regime of weak covalent supramolecular bonding, yield products which might be envisaged as novel molecular and polymeric soft matter phases.

RESUMO

We present a joint theoretical and experimental study of a series of cyclic indole tetramers aimed at understanding the fundamental electronic properties of this 3D platform and evaluating its potential in the construction of new semiconductors. To this end, we combined absorption and Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and spectroelectrochemistry with DFT calculations. Our results suggest that this platform can be easily and reversibly oxidized. Additionally, it has a HOMO that matches very well with the workfunction of gold, therefore charge injection from a gold electrode is expected to occur without significant barriers. Interestingly, the cyclic tetraindoles allow for good electron delocalization in spite of their saddle-shaped structures. The steric constraints introduced by N-substitution significantly inhibits ring inversion of the central cyclooctatetraene unit, whereas it only barely affects the optical and electrochemical properties (a slightly higher oxidation potential and a blueshifted absorption upon alkylation are observed).

RESUMO

Cyclic paraphenylenes, [n]CPPs, and linear paraphenylenes, [n]LPPs, formed by n benzenes, are investigated by Raman spectroscopy for n = 5 to 12 and density functional theory (DFT) for n = 4 to 20. The information on the experimental Raman frequencies and intensities, combined with DFT computations and reported X-ray diffraction structures, provides a consistent interpretation of the Raman spectra and allows establishing relevant structure-property trends. Structural and electronic effects such as benzene ring bending, inter-ring torsions, π-conjugation (aromaticity) and orbital energy gaps as a function of the linear elongation in [n]LPPs versus the macrocyclic curvature in [n]CPPs and of the molecular size (i.e., polymer limit) are systematically analyzed on the basis of the vibrational Raman properties. Changes in the BLA as an indicator of the degree of quinonoid character are analyzed and linked to the Effective Conjugation Coordinate (ECC) model. The BLA patterns involved in twisted and non-twisted conformations and in different species (bipolarons, quinonoid tautomers, and ECC active modes) are compared and their differences are discussed. This paper offers a unified interpretation of structural and electronic aspects in relation to the evolution from linear 1D π-systems to cyclic 2D structures.

RESUMO

Research on stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids recently became a hot topic because of their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties and promising applications in materials science. So far, most reported singlet diradicaloid molecules have a symmetric structure, while asymmetric diradicaloids with an additional contribution of a dipolar zwitterionic form to the ground state were rarely studied. In this Article, a series of new push-pull type oligo(N-annulated perylene)quinodimethanes were synthesized. Their chain length and solvent-dependent ground states and physical properties were systematically investigated by various experimental methods such as steady-state and transient absorption, two-photon absorption, X-ray crystallographic analysis, electron spin resonance, superconducting quantum interference device, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemistry. It was found that with extension of the chain length, the diradical character increases while the contribution of the zwitterionic form to the ground state becomes smaller. Because of the intramolecular charge transfer character, the physical properties of this push-pull system showed solvent dependence. In addition, density functional theory calculations on the diradical character and Hirshfeld charge were conducted to understand the chain length and solvent dependence of both symmetric and asymmetric systems. Our studies provided a comprehensive understanding on the fundamental structure- and environment-property relationships in the new asymmetric diradicaloid systems.

RESUMO

The high responsiveness of π-conjugated materials to external stimuli, such as electrons and photons, accounts for both their utility in optoelectronic applications and their chemical instability. Extensive studies on heteroatom-stabilized π-conjugated systems notwithstanding, it is still difficult to combine high performance and stability. We report here that carbon-bridged oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)s (COPV-n) are not only more responsive to doping and photoexcitation but also more stable than the conventional p-phenylenevinylenes and poly(3-hexylthiophene), surviving photolysis very well in air, suggesting that they could serve as building blocks for optoelectronic applications. Activation of the ground state by installation of bond angle strain toward the doped or photoexcited state and the flat, rigid, and hindered structure endows COPVs with stimuli-responsiveness and stability without recourse to heteroatoms. For example, COPV-6 can be doped with an extremely small reorganization energy and form a bipolaron delocalized over the entire π-conjugated system. Applications to bulk and molecular optoelectronic devices are foreseen.

RESUMO

A chiral bisurea-based superhydrogelator that is capable of forming supramolecular hydrogels at concentrations as low as 0.2 mM is reported. This soft material has been characterized by thermal studies, rheology, X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and by various spectroscopic techniques (electronic and vibrational circular dichroism and by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy). The expression of chirality on the molecular and supramolecular levels has been studied and a clear amplification of its chirality into the achiral analogue has been observed. Furthermore, thermal analysis showed that the hydrogelation of compound 1 has a high response to temperature, which corresponds to an enthalpy-driven self-assembly process. These particular thermal characteristics make these materials easy to handle for soft-application technologies.

RESUMO

We elucidate the supramolecular organization in the form of microsize fibrils of gels formed by a l-Valine peptidomimetic compound. Analysis was based on circular dichroism spectroscopies, vibrational (VCD) and electronic (CD), supported by microscopy (atomic force and scanning electron). We show how the VCD spectra give account of the micrometric structure of the fibrils formed by the helicoidal arrangement of simpler proto-fibrils, which are organized in a lower hierarchical level. This ability is used to monitorize a fully reversible change in the handedness of the helix by modulating different external stimuli as pH or ionic strength, thus providing the first observation by VCD of such a phenomenon in a short peptide.

RESUMO

In this paper we have prepared a new series of oligothiophenes capped with hexyl groups and a variety of strong acceptors, mainly cyanovinyl moieties. An exhaustive analysis of the absorption, photophysical, electrochemical, solid state, nonlinear optical and vibrational properties has been presented guided by theoretical calculations. The investigation is centered on the efficiency of the intramolecular charge transfer (i.e., chain length and acceptor dependence) and its impact on all the relevant electronic, structural, optical, and vibrational properties. The most significant features imparted by the acceptors through the π-conjugated oligothiophene path are (i) intense visible electronic absorptions, (ii) tuned fluorescence wavelength emissions, (iii) solid state π-stacking, (iv) ambipolar redox behavior, (v) S(1) ⇝ S(0) internal conversion as being the major route for the deactivation of the excited state, and (vi) large electronic and vibrational contributions to their nonlinear optical response (hyperpolarizability). The analysis establishes connections between the different properties of the materials and structure-function relationships useful in organic electronics.

RESUMO

A series of enantiopure, monodisperse alleno-acetylenic cyclooligomers were synthesized. The single-crystal X-ray structures of the cyclic trimer and hexamer were resolved, providing insights into the symmetry of these molecules. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD), optical rotatory dispersion (ORD), Raman spectroscopy, and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) data were analyzed with the aid of theoretical calculations. This multidimensional approach ultimately provided general guidelines that are useful for designing carbon-rich compounds with intense chiroptical properties.

RESUMO

Push-pull compounds, in which a proaromatic electron donor is conjugated to a 2-dicyanomethylenethiazole acceptor, have been prepared, and their properties compared to those of model compounds featuring an aromatic donor. A combined experimental (X-ray diffraction, (1) H NMR, IR, Raman, UV/Vis, nonlinear optical (NLO) measurements) and theoretical study reveals that structural and solvent effects determine the ground-state polarisation of these merocyanines: whereas 4H-pyran-4-ylidene- and 4-pyridylidene-containing compounds are zwitterionic and 1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene derivatives are close to the cyanine limit, anilino-derived merocyanines are essentially neutral. This very large range of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) gives rise to efficient second-order NLO chromophores with µß values ranging from strongly negative to strongly positive. In particular, pyranylidene derivatives are unusual in that they show an increase in the degree of ICT on lengthening the π-spacer, a feature that lies behind the very large negative µß values they display. The linking of the formally quinoidal 2-dicyanomethylenethiazole moiety to proaromatic donors seems a promising approach towards the optimisation of zwitterionic NLO chromophores.

RESUMO

We present a new terthiophene derivative substituted at the thienyl beta positions with a naphthalenediimide functionalization. The UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopic properties as well as the electrochemical properties have been discussed to describe its electronic structure. The vibrational Raman data are used to inspect the molecular architecture. All of the experimental data are supported by quantum chemical calculations with different approaches. A close comparison with other terthiophenes available in the literature is conducted, always stressing the effect of the relative orientation of the donor and acceptor groups either with long-axis or short-axis polarizations. The electronic structure of the molecule has been understood in terms of the HOMO-LUMO absolute energy values. A considerable reduction of the band gap from the constituting units to the studied molecule is detected, although electronic interaction is not optimal for this configuration. Fluorescence quenching is interpreted by the possibility of intersystem crossing and internal conversion. Finally, Raman spectroscopy gives additional information of the distribution of conjugation along the molecular domain, of subtle conformational effects, and of the intermolecular interaction by means of temperature-dependent Raman data. This study provides guidelines for controlling the electronic structure and for exploring new strategies pursuing improved dyes.

RESUMO

An analysis is performed on the molecular and electronic features in a series of trigonal molecules constituted by a central truxene core which is ramified with three oligofluorene moieties of different lengths. Arms and core are studied independently and upon threefold unification. Special emphasis is paid to the modulation of the conjugational properties in relation to substitution, molecular dimension, ring aromaticity, intermolecular forces, oxidation state, etc. Raman and optical absorption/emission spectroscopies in conjunction with computational theoretical results are combined for this purpose. The evolution of some key intensity ratios in the Raman spectra (i.e., I(1300)/I(1235)) is followed as an indication of electronic interaction between the core and the branches. The changes of the electronic delocalization upon solvation, with varying temperature in the solid state, with the nature of the aromatic unit (bithiophene/fluorene) or after electrochemical oxidation are interpreted. The modulation of the optical properties on the basis of the structure and energetics of the orbital around the gap is also addressed. Density functional theory was used to assign the vibrational and electronic spectra.

RESUMO

The synthesis, structure, and electronic properties of a novel cross-conjugated 10H-bisthienodithiocin-10-dicyanoethylene are reported. The X-ray single-crystal structure of the compound reveals a nonplanar conformation. The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of the compound show a great resemblance, which is a spectroscopic observation common to many push-pull systems. The UV-vis spectrum in CHCl3 displays a strong absorption at 370 nm accompanied by a shoulder at 430 nm so that the optical gap is 2.88 eV. On the other hand, the electrochemical gap amounts to 2.38 V. DFT and TDDFT quantum chemical calculations, at the B3LYP/6-31G** level, have been also performed to (i) determine the minimum-energy molecular structure, (ii) gain knowledge about the equilibrium atomic charges distribution, the topologies, and absolute energies of the frontier molecular orbitals around the gap and about the molecular vibrations which give rise to the most outstanding Raman bands experimentally evidenced, and (iii) to analyze the nature of the vertical one-electron excitations associated to the strongest UV-vis absorptions.
