RESUMO

The capitalisation on and transfer of technological, engineering and scientific knowledge associated with empirical know-how is an important issue for the sustainability and development of manufacturing. Indeed, certain sectors of industry are facing the increasing ageing of the labour force, recruitment difficulties and high staff turnover, leading to a loss of knowledge and know-how. In a context of numerical and digital transition and the migration of processes to industry 4.0, one of major challenges manufacturers face today is their capacity to build intelligent platforms for acquiring, storing and transferring their know-how and knowledge. It is crucial to create new media and tools for staff training and development capable of capturing knowledge and reusing it to create a project history through expertise and data collection. This paper presents the methodology and guidelines for implementing electronic knowledge books (eK-Books), along with their uses. The eK-Book is a semantic web-based hypertext medium (channel) allowing stakeholders to capitalise on, structure and transfer knowledge by using concept maps, process maps, influence graphs, downloadable documents, web pages and hypermedia knowledge sheets. They are intended for engineers, expert or novice technicians, manufacturers, sector coordinators and plant managers, as well as trainers and learners. They are usable and manageable in all types of environments and with different levels of accessibility. This paper highlights (1) the transfer knowledge capacity of eK-Books and (2) their usability in two agri-food sectors namely (1) the cheese sector with protected designation of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI), and (2) the butchery and cold meat sectors.

Salt (NaCl) is associated with a risk of hypertension and the development of coronary heart disease, so its consumption should be limited. However, salt plays a key role in the quality and safety of food by controlling undesirable microorganisms. Since studies have focused primarily on the effect of salts on the overall counts of the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) group, we have not yet understood how salt stress individually affects the strains and the interactions between them. In this study, we characterized the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) and potassium chloride (KCl) on the growth and acidification of 31 LAB strains. In addition, we evaluated the effect of salts on a total of 93 random pairwise strain combinations. Strains and co-cultures were tested at 3% NaCl, 5% NaCl, and 3% KCl on solid medium using an automated approach and image analysis. The results showed that the growth of LAB was significantly reduced by up to 68% at 5% NaCl (p < 0.0001). For the co-cultures, a reduction of up to 57% was observed at 5% NaCl (p < 0.0001). However, acidification was less affected by salt stress, whether for monocultures or co-cultures. Furthermore, KCl had a lesser impact on both growth and acidification compared to NaCl. Indeed, some strains showed a significant increase in growth at 3% KCl, such as Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis 74310 (23%, p = 0.01). More importantly, co-cultures appeared to be more resilient and had more varied responses to salt stress than the monocultures, as several cases of suppression of the significant effect of salts on acidification and growth were detected. Our results highlight that while salts can modulate microbial interactions, these latter can also attenuate the effect of salts on LAB.

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of studies on diagnostic imaging show superior efficiency and accuracy of computer-aided diagnostic systems compared to certified dentists. This methodological systematic review aims to evaluate the different methodological approaches used by studies focusing on machine learning and deep learning and that have used radiographic databases to classify, detect, and segment dental caries. METHODS: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO before data collection (CRD42022348097). Literature research was performed in MEDLINE, Embase, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science until December 2022, without language restrictions. Studies and surveys using a dental radiographic database for the classification, detection, or segmentation of carious lesions were sought. Records deemed eligible were retrieved and further assessed for inclusion by two reviewers who resolved any discrepancies through consensus. A third reviewer was consulted when any disagreements or discrepancies persist between the two reviewers. After data extraction, the same reviewers assessed the methodological quality using the CLAIM and QUADAS-AI checklists. RESULTS: After screening 325 articles, 35 studies were eligible and included. The bitewing was the most commonly used radiograph (n=17) at the time when detection (n=15) was the most explored computer vision task. The sample sizes used ranged from 95 to 38437, while the augmented training set ranged from 300 to 315786. Convolutional neural network (CNN) was the most commonly used model. The mean completeness of CLAIM items was 49 % (SD ± 34%). The applicability of the CLAIM checklist items revealed several weaknesses in the methodology of the selected studies: most of the studies were monocentric, and only 9% of them used an external test set when evaluating the model's performance. The QUADAS-AI tool revealed that only 43% of the studies included in this systematic review were at low risk of bias concerning the standard reference domain. CONCLUSION: This review demonstrates that the overall scientific quality of studies conducted to feed AI algorithms is low. Some improvement in the design and validation of studies can be made with the development of a standardized guideline for the reproducibility and generalizability of results and, thus, their clinical applications.

We combined a conducting polymer, polyaniline (PANI), with an organic semiconducting macrocyclic (MCs) material. The macrocycles are the phthalocyanines and porphyrins used to tune the electrical properties of the PANI, which benefits from their ability to enhance sensor response. For this, we proceeded by a simple ultrasonically assisted reaction involving the two components, i.e., the PANI matrix and the MCs, to achieve the synthesis of the composite nanostructure PANI/MCs. The composite nanostructure has been characterized and deposited on interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) to construct resistive sensor devices. The isolated nanostructured composites present good electrical properties dominated by PANI electronic conductivity, and the characterization reveals that both components are present in the nanostructure. The experimental results obtained under gas exposures show that the composite nanostructures can be used as a sensing material with enhanced sensing properties. The sensing performance under different conditions, such as ambient humidity, and the sensor's operating temperature are also investigated. Sensing behavior in deficient humidity levels and their response at different temperatures revealed unusual behaviors that help to understand the sensing mechanism. Gas sensors based on PANI/MCs demonstrate significant stability over time, but this stability is highly reduced after experiments in lower humidity conditions and at high temperatures.

RESUMO

The roughness of shallow or deep metallic diffraction gratings modifies the propagation of surface plasmon mode along the metallic-air interface. The scattering losses lead to a spectral or angular broadening of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and to a shift of the resonance wavelength and coupling angle. This mechanism is deeply analyzed both experimentally and theoretically to overcome these effects when such structures, in particular deep ones, are used as SPR-based sensors.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the main causes and risk factors of death in intensive care. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Prospective observational study in the intensive care units in Hospital Principal of Dakar from July to December 2018 including all patients who died 24 hours after admission. Demographic, clinical, severity (IGSII, APACHE II, MPM) and organ failure (SOFA, LODS) scores were collected. A multiparametric comparison was made between deceased and surviving patients. RESULTS: The overall mortality was 25.86% correlated with the probability of death (MPM): 26.4%. The mean age was 50.98 [8-94 years] with a sex ratio of 1.15. The majority of deaths (79.26%) occurred outside of duty hours and 70.7% had at least one medical history. The mean severity scores were for IGSII 40.12 +/- 17.25 and for APACHE II 18.31 +/- 8.49. The mean visceral failure scores were for SOFA 7.02 +/- 4.44 and for LODS 5.73 +/- 3.35. Complications were dominated by nosocomial infections (48.78%) and are responsible for 37.8% of deaths. The mean length of stay was 7.30 days +/- 7.46. Age, the existence of organ failure, the use of vasopressors, the occurrence of nosocomial infections and the absence of a senior doctor were correlated with mortality. CONCLUSION: The intensive care unit mortality rate is 25.86%. Advanced age, the existence of organ failures and the occurrence of a nosocomial infection are factors in the occurrence of death.


OBJECTIFS: Analyser les principales causes et les facteurs de risque de décès en réanimation. PATIENTS ET MÉTHODE: Etude prospective observationnelle dans les services de réanimation de l'hôpital Principal de Dakar de Juillet à Décembre 2018 incluant tous les patients décédés 24 heures après l'admission.Nous avonsétudiés, les données démographiques, cliniques, les scores de gravité (IGSII, APACHE II, MPM) et de défaillance d'organe (SOFA, LODS).Une comparaison multiparamétrique a été faite entre les patients décédés et survivants. RÉSULTATS: La mortalité globale était de 25,86% corrélée avec la probabilité de décès (MPM) de 26,4%. L'âge moyen était de 50,98 [8-94 ans] avec un sex-ratio H/F : 1,15. La majorité des décès (79,26%) était survenue durant la nuit, les week-end et jours fériés, l'activité étant assurée en ce moment par l'équipe de garde constituée de deux médecins en fin de spécialisation en anesthésie-réanimation et un médecin sénior d'astreinte pouvant être appelé en cas de nécessité. Des antécédents pathologiques avaient été retrouvés chez 70,7% des patients décédés.Le score de gravité IGSII était en moyenne de 40,12 +/- 17,25 et l'APACHE II de 18,31 +/- 8,49. Le score de défaillance viscérale moyen était pour le SOFA de 7,02 +/-4,44 et pour le LODS de 5,73+/-3,35. Les complications étaient dominées par les infections nosocomiales (48,78%) et sont associées à 37,8% des décès (p<0,0001 et OR [IC 95%] 22,8 [7,6-68,2]). La durée moyenne de séjour était de 7,30 jours +/-7,46. L'âge, la défaillance d'organe, l'utilisation de vasopresseurs, l'infection nosocomiale étaient corrélés à la mortalité. CONCLUSION: Le taux de mortalité en réanimation est de 25,86%. L'âge avancé, l'existence de défaillance d'organe et la survenue d'une infection nosocomiale sont des facteurs de survenue de décès.

Microorganisms are a fundamental part of virtually every ecosystem on earth. Understanding how collectively they interact, assemble, and function as communities has become a prevalent topic both in fundamental and applied research. Owing to multiple advances in technology, answering questions at the microbial system or network level is now within our grasp. To map and characterize microbial interaction networks, numerous computational approaches have been developed; however, experimentally validating microbial interactions is no trivial task. Microbial interactions are context-dependent, and their complex nature can result in an array of outcomes, not only in terms of fitness or growth, but also in other relevant functions and phenotypes. Thus, approaches to experimentally capture microbial interactions involve a combination of culture methods and phenotypic or functional characterization methods. Here, through our perspective of food microbiologists, we highlight the breadth of innovative and promising experimental strategies for their potential to capture the different dimensions of microbial interactions and their high-throughput application to answer the question; are microbial interaction patterns or network architecture similar along different contextual scales? We further discuss the experimental approaches used to build various types of networks and study their architecture in the context of cell biology and how they translate at the level of microbial ecosystem.

Oral diseases costs are among the most expensive health care benefits. In Senegal, households contribute up to 37.6% of the national health spending through direct payments. The aim of this work was to study the role of health insurance in the coverage of oral health care in Senegal. The study was based on health insurance agents and policyholders. The study reveals that oral health care coverage through health insurance still does not meet requirements for treatment of oral infections. In financial terms, oral health care costs health insurance too much. As a result, carriers cover them partially. On top of that, the majority of the population's lack of knowledge about mutual, because they have a little background on oral health care, the latter weighs heavily on health insurance leading to the use of self-medication, traditional medicine and handicraft prosthetists. The analysis reveals an unequal access to oral health care through the health insurance system. To bring under control the expenditure for oral health care, carriers and dental surgeons must work together to raise the populations' awareness on community solidarity.

RESUMO

This paper presents a focused review on the nanomaterials and associated transduction schemes that have been developed for the selective detection of hydrogen sulfide. It presents a quite comprehensive overview of the latest developments, briefly discusses the hydrogen sulfide detection mechanisms, identifying the reasons for the selectivity (or lack of) observed experimentally. It critically reviews performance, shortcomings, and identifies missing or overlooked important aspects. It identifies the most mature/promising materials and approaches for achieving inexpensive hydrogen sulfide sensors that could be employed in widespread, miniaturized, and inexpensive detectors and, suggests what research should be undertaken for ensuring that requirements are met.

Here, we report on the use of electrochemical methods for the detection of volatiles fatty acids (VFAs), namely acetic acid. We used tetra-tert-butyl phthalocyanine (PcH2-tBu) as the sensing material and investigated its electroanalytical properties by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). To realize the electrochemical sensing system, the PcH2-tBu has been dropcast-deposited on carbon (C) orgold (Au)screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) and characterized by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM analysis reveals that the PcH2-tBu forms mainly aggregates on the SPEs. The modified electrodes are used for the detection of acetic acid and present a linear current increase when the acetic acid concentration increases. The Cmodified electrode presents a limit of detection (LOD) of 25.77 mM in the range of 100 mM-400 mM, while the Aumodified electrode presents an LOD averaging 40.89 mM in the range of 50 mM-300 mM. When the experiment is realized in a buffered condition, theCmodified electrode presents a lower LOD, which averagesthe 7.76 mM. A pronounced signal decay attributed to an electrode alteration is observed in the case of the gold electrode. This electrode alteration severely affects the coating stability. This alteration is less perceptible in the case of the carbon electrode.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of urinary schistosomiasis in school children in a rural village of Northern Senegal, and to evaluate the impact of this parasitic infection on children's health, growth, and nutritional status. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 465 children resident in the village of Kassak Nord, in Senegal, in an area which is highly endemic for Schistosoma haematobium. Data on health, nutritional status and urinary schistosomiasis were collected. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in school children in Kassak was 47.4%. As for malnutrition, 29.7% of children were malnourished (BMI-for-age Z-score [BAZ] <-2) and 14.5% had a significant linear growth retardation (height-for-age Z-score [HAZ] <-2). Children with urinary schistosomiasis showed lower mean BAZ and HAZ than uninfected children (HAZ positives -0.7±1.4 vs. HAZ negatives -0.4±1.4, P=0.004; BAZ positives -1.5±1 vs. BAZ negatives -1.3±1.1, P=0.03). It was also found that infected children were at greater risk of malnutrition (BAZ<-2; OR 1.5; 95% CI 1.01-2.26). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study support the hypothesis that urinary schistosomiasis affects negatively childhood health and nutritional status and are of importance for planning intervention aimed to monitoring and control Urinary Schistosomiasis and malnutrition.

Modelling the links between the mixing process conditions of wheat flour dough and the properties of the dough is a challenge. This paper presents a systematic modelling approach based on qualitative algebra to represent human expertise in this domain. Qualitative models of wheat dough mixing have been implemented as an expert system, called Ascopain. The relations between the process conditions - flour specifications and kneading conditions - and the dough sensory properties, have been formalised by means of qualitative functions. An extensive evaluation of Ascopain is provided by comparing the simulation results, first to experts' predictions, and second, to experimental results of sensory evaluation of mixed dough properties. The good matching level proves the accuracy and the robustness of the expert-system and, overall, its ability to implement a reasoning on the influences of process conditions to predict actual dough properties, starting from ingredient characteristics.

In order to enhance the durability of chemical filters for ozone molecules, devoted to microsystem for the selective detection of NO2 in the environment, the adsorption of indigo molecules onto the surface of carbonaceous nanomaterials (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, a mixture of nanodisks/nanocones, nanofibres) was investigated. The surface of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes was coated by π-stacking with adsorbed indigo molecules. An excess of indigo has resulted in a biphasic sample where nanotubes covered with indigo coexist with free indigo particles. Although similar filtering yields toward O3 (close to 100%) and NO2 (around 0%) were obtained as compared to individual materials, the indigo/MWCNTs samples exhibit enhanced durability as chemical filter at high ozone concentration (1 ppm).

The dinuclear gold complexes [{Au(PPh 3)} 2(mu- dmid)] ( 1) ( dmid = 1,3-dithiole-2-one-4,5-dithiolate) and [{Au(PPh 3)} 2(mu- dddt)] ( 2) ( dddt = 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiine-2,3-dithiolate) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes exhibit intramolecular aurophilic interactions with Au...Au distances of 3.1984(10) A for 1 and 3.1295(11) A for 2. A self-assembly reaction between 4,5-bis(2-hydroxyethylthio)-1,3-dithiole-2-thione ( (HOCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 dmit) and [AuCl(tht)] affords the complex [AuCl{ (HOCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 dmit}] 2 ( 4), which possesses an antiparallel dimeric arrangement resulting from a short aurophilic contact of 3.078(6) A. This motif is extended into two dimensions due to intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds via the hydroxyethyl groups, giving rise to a supramolecular network. Three compounds were investigated for their rich photophysical properties at 298 and 77 K in 2-MeTHF and in the solid state; [Au 2(mu- dmid)(PPh 3) 2] ( 1), [Au 2(mu- dddt)(PPh 3) 2] ( 2), and [AuCl{( HOCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 dmit}] ( 4). 1 exhibits relatively long-lived LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) emissions at 298 K in solution (370 nm; tau e approximately 17 ns, where M is a single gold not interacting with the other gold atom; i.e., the fluxional C-SAuPPh 3 units are away from each other) and in the solid state (410 nm; tau e approximately 70 mus). At 77 K, a new emission band is observed at 685 nm (tau e = 132 mus) and assigned to a LMCT emission where M is representative for two gold atoms interacting together consistent with the presence of Au...Au contacts as found in the crystal structure. In solution at 77 K, the LMCT emission is also red-shifted to 550 nm (tau e approximately 139 mus). It is believed to be associated to a given rotamer. 2 also exhibits LMCT emissions at 380 nm at 298 K in solution and at 470 nm in the solid state. 4 exhibits X/MLCT emission (halide/metal to ligand charge transfer) where M is a dimer in the solid state with obvious Au...Au interactions, resulting in red-shifted emission band, and is a monomer in solution in the 10 (-5) M concentration (i.e., no Au...Au interactions) resulting in blue-shifted luminescence. Both fluorescence and phosphorescence are observed for 4.
