Dyslipidemia is a component of metabolic syndrome, having an important role in the carcinogenesis of different tumor types, such as prostate, ovarian, or renal cancer. The number of studies on the predictive potential of the different components of the lipid profile with a predictive potential in breast cancer is quite low. The evaluation of the lipid profile was carried out for the 142 patients who benefited from neoadjuvant therapy (NAC) in order to identify a potential predictive biomarker. The serological sample collection was performed sequentially according to a standardized protocol, pre-NAC, post-NAC and 6 months post-NAC after a 6-h pre-collection fast. We also investigated in the general group the presence or absence of the p53 mutation (TP53) and of the mitotic index ki-67, respectively, in relation to the molecular subtypes. The menopausal status, tumor size, family history, grading, Ki-67, p53 and LN metastases have a predictive nature regarding overall survival (OS) (p < 0.05), while for disease free survival (DFS), only tumor size, tumor grading, Ki-67 > 14, and p53+ are of predictive nature. The genetic and molecular analysis carried out in our group indicates that 71.67% have a Ki-67 score higher than 14%, and 39% of the patients have the positive P53 mutation. The multivariate analysis in the case of patients included in the TNBC subtype showed that the increased tumor volume (p = 0.002) and increased level of HDL (p = 0.004) represent predictive factors for the tumor response rate to NAC. High HDL-C levels before NAC and increased LDL-C levels after NAC were associated with the better treatment response in ER-positive and HER2+ breast cancer patients. Increased HDL-C values and tumor volume represent predictive factors as to the response rate to NAC in the case of patients included in the TNBC subtype. Regarding the ER+ and HER2+ subtypes, increased levels of HDL-C pre-NAC and increased levels of LDL-C post-NAC were associated with a better therapeutic response rate. Tumor grading, Ki-67, p53, and LN metastases have a predictive nature for OS, while tumor size, tumor grading, and Ki-67 > 14, and p53+ are predictive for DFS.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder posing multifaceted challenges to global public health. Among its numerous complications, infected diabetic foot ulcers (IDFUs) represent a particularly debilitating consequence. Beyond cardiovascular implications, there is an emerging understanding of the interconnectedness among IDFUs, neuropathy, atherosclerosis, and dyslipidemia. IDFUs, peripheral neuropathy, and atherosclerosis share common risk factors and mechanistic pathways. The primary objective of this study was to characterize the lipid profiles in DM patients with IDFUs, comparing them with DM patients without foot ulcers, and with a control group of healthy subjects. The secondary objectives included evaluating apolipoprotein E (ApoE) levels across these study groups and comparing lipid profiles within IDFU subgroups. A total of 160 patients were assessed for this study. After applying exclusion criteria, 140 participants were included, divided into three groups: Group IDFU (80 patients with IDFUs), Group DM (32 patients with DM but no foot ulcers), and Group Controls (28 healthy controls). Compared to Group DM, Group IDFU demonstrated lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (30.9 ± 12.6 mg/dL vs. 40.8 ± 16.6 mg/dL, p = 0.002), but improved levels of ApoE (160.9 ± 68.4 mg/dL vs. 197.2 ± 69.6 mg/dL, p = 0.01), triglycerides (TG) (126.9 ± 56.2 mg/dL vs. 165.8 ± 79.0 mg/dL, p = 0.004), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (84.2 ± 32.3 mg/dL vs. 92.3 ± 39.3 mg/dL, p = 0.1), and total cholesterol (133.6 ± 43 mg/dL vs. 164.6 ± 44.4 mg/dL, p = 0.002). The IDFU patients exhibit improved lipid profiles, excepting HDL-C, which is unusual because IDFU follows complications related to dyslipidemia for DM patients. Anemia, impaired renal function, and elevated TG levels were identified as biomarkers for mortality among patients with IDFUs. The data suggest that a lower level of HDL-C and an improved lipid profile may indicate a systemic end-stage disease manifestation in DM patients with IDFUs.

Background: Colorectal cancer, 3rd in incidence and 2nd in mortality among cancers worldwide, represents the most common malignant tumor of the digestive tract. In Romania, it is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer (approximately 0.06% of the population/year). During the COVID-19 pandemic the legislation preventing the SARS-CoV-2 viral transmission impairing access to outpatient healthcare services combined with patients fear of SARS-CoV-2 infection had consequences on the diagnosis and treatment of all other pathologies. Methods: A 5-year retrospective cohort study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Arad, Romania, and included 1329 newly diagnosed colorectal cancer patients. For statistical analysis, Fisher's exact test was used for categorical data and the unpaired test with Welch's correction for continuous data. Results: The age on diagnosis decreased during the early COVID-19 pandemic to 68.50 (95% CI [67.90 69.11]) years, with the highest percentage (7.41%) of early onset colorectal cancer patients, a steady post-pandemic increase in the percentage of male (52.71% in 2019 to 62.20% in 2022) and urban (54.18% in 2018 to 70.10% in 2022) patients, admitted to the hospital due to an emergency presentation (peaking at 83.95% in 2020) and requiring a longer hospitalization period (10.03 [95% CI (8.76-11.30)] days in 2020 to 8.37 [95% CI (7.44-9.30)] days in 2022). The most common colo-rectal cancer diagnosis of patients in our reference population was malignant neoplasm of the rectum (ICD-10 code C20.0), while the most common complications were peritumoral adherence-related disorder, occlusion, and perforation, encountered in patients with comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, ischemic cardiomyopathy, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Conclusions: Regional particularities should be analyzed to better target the population at risk and to better direct the necessary healthcare resources towards the reference population, especially during crisis periods similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Strategies have been researched and implemented to reduce the number of people with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). One problem is the accurate assessment of DFU severity, which is the main factor in resource allocation and treatment choice. The primary objective of this study was to assess pentraxin-3 as a biomarker of an infected DFU (IDFU), the limb amputation level prognosis, and patient survival. The secondary objectives were to evaluate and compare other markers, including white blood cells (WBCs), C-reactive protein (CRP), the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and procalcitonin (PCT), for identifying IDFUs. Over a period of two years, 145 patients were followed; 131 of these were analyzed for this study. Pentraxin-3 was found to be a good predictor of death (p = 0.047). A comparison between IDFUs and DFUs revealed the following differences: PCT had the highest AUROC of 0.91, sensitivity of 93.7, and specificity of 83.3%. CRP had a cutoff value of 226 mg/L, an AUROC of 0.89, a sensitivity of 95.5%, and a specificity of 83.3%. Fibrinogen had an AUROC of 0.87 at a cutoff value of 5.29 g/L, with a good sensitivity and specificity of 85% and 87%, respectively. ESR had a cutoff value of 46 mm/h, an AUROC of 85%, a sensitivity of 83.7%, and a specificity of 83.3%. Pentraxin-3 showed promising results in predicting IDFUs and DFUs, and it served as a marker for the risk of death in IDFU patients during the 6 month follow-up. Other markers, including CRP, PCT, ESR, and fibrinogen, were more effective in differentiating between IDFUs and DFUs.

Tussilago farfara L., a perennial species, is a medicinal herb used in traditional medicine, mainly for the treatment of respiratory tract-related pathology. In traditional Chinese medicine, flower buds are preferred; in Europe, the leaves are used; and in some parts of India, the whole plant is utilized. This preferential usage of the plant organs might be based on differences in the chemical composition due to environmental conditions, along with preferred traditional and cultural approaches. In this article, the impact of pedoclimatic growth conditions on the morpho-anatomical development and phytochemical profile of the plant were studied on T. farfara in the vegetative state, collected from two different locations in the Romanian spontaneous flora, revealing significant variations. Furthermore, the antioxidant profile of the specific extracts from the aerial and subterranean plant parts is also in accordance with these discrepancies. The plant anatomy was assessed histologically by optical microscopy, while the analytical chemistry evaluation was based on LC/MS and spectral methods for the evaluation of the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activity. To our knowledge, this is the first comparative analysis contextually reporting on the histology, phenolic profile, antioxidant capacity, and geographical location of the vegetative form of T. farfara.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents the third type of cancer in incidence and second in mortality worldwide, with the newly diagnosed case number on the rise. Among the diagnosed patients, approximately 70% have no hereditary germ-line mutations or family history of pathology, thus being termed sporadic CRC. Diet and environmental factors are to date considered solely responsible for the development of sporadic CRC; therefore; attention should be directed towards the discovery of preventative actions to combat the CRC initiation, promotion, and progression. Quercetin is a polyphenolic flavonoid plant secondary metabolite with a well-characterized antioxidant activity. It has been extensively reported as an anti-carcinogenic agent in the scientific literature, and the modulated targets of quercetin have been also characterized in the context of CRC, mainly in original research publications. In this fairly comprehensive review, we summarize the molecular targets of quercetin reported to date in in vivo and in vitro CRC models, while also giving background information about the signal transduction pathways that it up- and downregulates. Among the most relevant modulated pathways, the Wnt/ß-catenin, PI3K/AKT, MAPK/Erk, JNK, or p38, p53, and NF-κB have been described. With this work, we hope to encourage further quests in the elucidation of quercetin anti-carcinogenic activity as single agent, as dietary component, or as pharmaconutrient delivered in the form of plant extracts.

Colorectal cancer is a major public health problem worldwide with increasing morbidity and mortality. Numerous exogenous and endogenous factors are involved in colorectal carcinogenesis: age, sex, diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, exposure to harmful environmental factors, intestinal microbiota, bacterial and viral infections, the ability of the host immune system to respond, genetic factors, etc. The present study analyzed histopathologically and immunohistochemically a number of 36 cases of colorectal adenocarcinomas. The existence of an accentuated cell pleomorphism was noted, which corresponds to different clones of tumor cells, in the same tumor coexisting aspects of tubular adenocarcinoma, mucinous areas and even signet-ring cell. The tumor stroma was mainly of the desmoplastic type, but also of the lax type, more or less infiltrated with inflammatory cells. Evaluation of immunomarkers for cancer stem cells (CSCs) showed that none of the markers used alone [cluster of differentiation (CD)133, CD44, aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A1 (ALDH1A1), CD24, CD26] show CSCs.

Sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma (SRCC) is an aggressive form of de-differentiated renal cell carcinoma. We report a case of a 79-year-old male who presented himself to the Department of Emergency complaining of macroscopic hematuria for the last two days and a back pain located in the lumbar region persisting for around a month; there were no major changes in the initial laboratory tests. Abdominal ultrasonography identified a renal mass located in the lower pole of the left kidney. The computed tomography (CT) scan with iodine-based contrast revealed the left kidney had a complete deletion of corticomedullary differentiation and a large renal mass located in the lower pole with inhomogeneous iodophilia, which measured around about 15 cm in transversal diameter and 13.6 cm in craniocaudal diameter. Nephrectomy of the left kidney was performed. Histopathological and immunochemistry tests diagnosed a SRCC with clear cells and eosinophilia. We present these findings along with a short review of the literature.

Phyllodes tumors (PTs) are rare tumors of the breast, which encompass both stromal and epithelial components. The maximum incidence is in the fourth decade of life. Most of these tumors are benign, but about one third can be malignant acting as sarcomas. Due to their rarity and atypical clinical behavior (especially for the giant ones), the management of these tumors is usually difficult. We report a case of a 24-year-old woman who presented in the Department of Oncology for rapid increase in volume of the left breast. She had no personal pathological or family history. Initial clinical exam showed a large irregular mass in the left breast of approximately 30 cm and palpable lymph nodes in the ipsilateral axilla. A core needle biopsy for the tumor was performed with histopathological (HP) result that revealed an aspect suggesting fibroadenoma/PT. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan identified lymph node enlargement in the left axilla and a peripheral nodule in the lung about 5.5/3.4 mm with no specific features. The patient was then transferred to the Department of Surgery, where left mastectomy and axillary lymph node sampling were performed. HP result of the surgical specimens confirmed the presence of both fibroadenoma and PT, with clear margins above 1 cm, but recommended immunohistochemistry (IHC) to clearly specify benign versus borderline type. Five lymph nodes out of six resected presented microscopic reactive changes. We performed a search of literature using the keywords "giant", "benign" and "phyllodes". The results were used to summarize and discuss some of the main features of this type of tumors as well as diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties.

Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) have been reported to hold a plentitude of health-promoting properties beyond basic nutrition, mainly attributed to their anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity. In this article, we built the phytochemical profile of three wild bilberry fruit extract formulations (aqueous, methanolic, and hydro-methanolic) using UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS putative analysis, identifying 88 individual phytochemicals, mainly flavonoids (total content 8.41 ± 0.11 mg QE/g dw), free amino acids, polyphenols (total content 21.68 ± 0.19 mg GAE/g dw), carboxylic acids, and vitamins. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the extract was assessed, reaching 78.03 ± 0.16% DPPH free radical scavenging activity, comparable to literature values determined for bilberry extracts of other origin. Due to the increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome and based on the reviewed benefits of bilberries, we tested the most potent formulation of our bilberry extracts in this biological context. The in vivo rescue effect of a bilberry extract supplemented diet on Drosophila melanogaster was assessed by monitoring biochemical and genomic markers. Hemolymph trehalose levels were halved upon addition of 3% hydro-methanolic bilberry extract to a high-sugar (1.5 M sucrose) diet, as compared to the non-supplemented high-sugar diet. Noteworthy, the rescue seen for flies kept on the bilberry extract supplemented high-sugar diet appeared to parallel the trehalose levels observed in the case of the control diet (50 mM sucrose) flies. Moreover, next to the trehalose-lowering type of in vivo effects, other gene expression related rescues were also detected for genes such as InR, Akh, AstA, AstC, Irk, Npc2g, and CCHa2 upon supplementation of the high-sugar diet with our hydro-methanolic bilberry fruit extract. Our findings suggest that such a bilberry fruit extract could generate physiological and genomic type of compensatory mechanisms so that further translational approaches would advance the understanding of some human specific pathological conditions.

The most frequent prostate diseases depending on age are prostatitis in young men, benign prostate hypertrophy in men over 50 years old, and prostate cancer (PCa) in elderly patients. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the role of inflammation in the progression of prostate diseases. We used clinical and paraclinical techniques for the positive diagnosis [serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) determination, we performed transrectal ultrasound to asses the prostate volume and prostate biopsy or transurethral resection of the prostate, where it was imposed]. The prostate tissue specimens were analyzed histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Our results show that PCa patients with higher inflammation rates had a higher Gleason score in both the castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) group and the castration-sensitive group. We have noticed that patients with high inflammation grade also had a much higher International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). In conclusion, we can say that in our study, inflammation played an important role in the evolution of benign and malignant prostate diseases; its presence has influenced directly the severity of symptoms, and the aggressiveness of the diseases.

We present the case of a 71-year-old right-handed male, admitted to the Department of Neurology, Emergency County Hospital of Arad, Romania, on November 2015, with a rare case of Klüver-Bucy syndrome (KBS), following an ischemic stroke of the right temporal lobe, which was previously diagnosed in December 2014 and was treated accordingly. At the moment of second hospital admission, the patient was found somnolent and confused at home, with traumatic signs of biting of the tongue and urine emission. A couple days after admission, our patient became alert and presented hypersexuality, hypermetamorphosis, increased oral tendency, behavior changes including apathy with loss of anger and fear, and a very increased appetite, transient visual agnosia and right-left disorientation. In the initial phase, the patient could not recognize any members of his family, but he had a tendency to touch everything within his reach and place it into his mouth. The KBS presented in this case, following an ischemic stroke of the right temporal lobe provides distinct and intriguing insights into the possible pathophysiology of this syndrome. Often disruption of consciousness during recovery period may hide the clinical manifestation of the syndrome.

Synchronous gastric tumors, and, especially the presence of an adenocarcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors, are less frequent. We present the case of a 75-year-old patient, with no gastrointestinal pathology in the medical history, who was admitted for marked asthenia, nausea, coffee grounds vomiting, inappetence, dizziness, weight loss and periodical epigastralgias. The clinical and imagistic examinations highlighted an ulcerative, infiltrative, bleeding tumor formation, present on the anterior side and subcardially on the small curvature. During the surgery, there was highlighted a second tumor, whitish, of about 2.5 cm, prominent under the peritoneal serous, of firm consistency and with an adherence to the stomach muscles. For removing the two tumors, there was performed total gastrectomy with esophagus-jejunal termino-lateral anastomosis, with jejunum ansa "in omega". The histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations established that the first tumor was a poorly differentiated carcinoma, and the second was a gastrointestinal stromal tumor. The patient's evolution was a good one, both clinically and biologically, the imagistic examinations performed after six and 12 months highlighting the lack of local relapses and absence of metastases.

RESUMO

Aneurysm of the cystic artery is not common, and it is a rare cause of hemobilia. Most of reported cases are pseudoaneurysms resulting from either an inflammatory process in the abdomen or abdominal trauma. We report a healthy individual who developed hemobilia associated with cystic artery aneurysm. Visceral artery aneurysms are rare and can rupture with potentially grave outcome due to excessive bleeding. The patient was managed with cholecystectomy and concomitant aneurysm repair.

Endothelial cells are highlighted using a variety of endothelial markers. One of the best known markers is CD34, a surface antigen. The most used immunohistochemical marker for identification of activated endothelial cells is CD105. We chose to compare these two markers in order to evaluate angiogenesis of the rectal cancers by determining the microvessel density (MVD). Our study included 31 patients with rectal cancer between 2010-2014, who underwent rectal resection at Arad and Timisoara Counties Hospitals, Romania. We used MVD quantification by highlighting the tumor blood vessels with two different endothelial markers using the immunohistochemical protocols. The CD34 evaluation of MVD was 37 vessels/field/×200 peritumoral (PT), compared with normal rectal mucosa with 17 vessels/field/×200. Intra-tumoral (IT) MVD for CD34 positive vessels was between 7 and 120 vessels/field/×200. Average IT MVD CD105+ was 13.7 vessels/field/×200, the PT MVD CD105+ was 10 vessels/field/×200. Usually, IT MVD CD105 is smaller than PT MVD CD105, a pattern that was not respected in our study. There was a statistical significant correlation between IT MVD CD34 and PT MVD CD34 with p=0.008, also IT MVD CD34 and IT MVD CD105 with p=0.009, PT MVD CD34 with PT MVD CD105, p=0.001. PT MVD CD34 had a statistical significant correlation with T, p=0.004. IT MVD CD105 associated with T, p=0.004, and with N, p=0.004. The evaluation of both CD34-CD105 showed the role of angiogenesis in the cancer proliferation and local spread, the angiogenesis level being maintained high even in the advanced stages of the disease. There was observed a difference between the intratumoral and peritumoral MVD, the study of this difference possibly leading to a better assessment of prognosis and adjusted therapies in the future.

Trigonella foenum-graecum (TFG) seeds exert a protective antioxidant effect and membrane protector through their rich content in polyphenolic flavonoids. The previous research focused on the hypoglycemic action of the seeds, with scarce studies on the preventive effects in the pathology of the kidney. Our work was conducted on an experimental in vivo model; the animals were given two different concentrations of TFG seeds, consequently to alcohol intoxication. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed vacuolation in cytoplasm, edemas at the apical pole of the nephrocytes, diffusion of the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial matrix and the increase in number of the lysozymes and especially peroxisomes, as well as the congestion of blood capillaries. In the case of the groups T5R and T10R, which received Trigonella powder together with ethanol, the structural and ultrastructural changes produced by the ethylic intoxication were more reduced, being somewhat improved in the T5R group. Therefore, the majority of the cells nuclei have retained their spherical shape, being at the same time predominantly euchromatic, with little heterochromatin and evenly dispersed. Our results suggest the use of Trigonella seeds as a food supplement to prevent cellular deterioration and improve renal morphology and function.

Normally present in the temporal region, the juxtaoral organ of Chievitz has considerable importance for both the surgeon and the pathologist. Although very rare, the nodular hyperplasia of the Chievitz's organ has been misinterpreted as invasive carcinoma. The pathological aspect mimics the mucoepidermoid carcinoma, squamous carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation or tumor of the skin appendages. We present the case of a 71-year-old patient admitted with temporal tumor. The initial pathological diagnosis was mixed squamous basal cell carcinoma. The subsequent evaluation of sections and immunohistochemistry allowed us to demonstrate a benign tumor of the Chievitz's organ. In this case, therapy and prognosis are strongly related to the correct diagnosis and avoid an over treatment of a benign tumor.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and most serious malignancies worldwide. Its incidence has increased by more than 200 000 in 2008, both in men and in women. Although CRC is a well-studied malignancy which has a slow progression, known risk factors and pre-neoplastic lesions that can be detected and treated, its incidence is on the rise. In our study, we clinically, histologically and immunohistochemically evaluated a group of 317 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The trial included 317 colorectal cancer patients hospitalized in the second Department of General Surgery within the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova, Romania, between January 2005 and December 2009, aged between 18 and 89 years. After undergoing clinical and laboratory work-up, all patients were submitted to surgery with curative intent. Resection specimens were collected and histological slides were produced from the biological material. Usual histological staining, Hematoxylin-Eosin and trichromic Goldner-Szekely, as well as immunohistochemistry with anti-Ki67, anti-caspase 3, anti-p53 and anti E-cadherin antibodies was also performed. RESULTS: Regarding gender distribution of cases in the study group was a slightly higher incidence in the number of women affected by neoplasia (n=166, 52.35%) than males (n=151, 47.65%). Analysis of incidence per decade of age showed highest figures between 61-70 years, but we also observed comparable values for the decade 51-60 years. Analysis of topography showed higher incidence of cancer of the rectum (119 cases, representing 37.53%) compared to individual segments of the colon. Average size determined for all locations was 5.05 cm, with a median located at 4.82 and a standard deviation of 1.99. Regarding the degree of cell differentiation, out of the total of 245 adenocarcinomas, a number of 87 (35.52%) were well-differentiated adenocarcinomas, 127 (51.83%) were moderately differentiated, and 31 (12.65%) cases were poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas. Index of cell proliferation, Ki67, had a moderate and intense reaction to all the cases studied. Very few tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for caspase 3, regardless of the degree of tumor differentiation. E-cadherin was intense in well-differentiated adenocarcinomas. In our study, of 42 colon adenocarcinomas, 29 (69%) were highly positive to anti-p53 antibody, the remaining being negative. CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal cancer was diagnosed especially in people over 50 years. Analysis of topography showed higher incidence of cancer of the rectum compared to segments of the colon. More than half were presented in stages III and IV. The histopathological study showed that about 98% of colorectal neoplasms were adenocarcinomas, frequently with moderate differentiation.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequent malignancies with an increasing incidence and prevalence. As in other malignancies, nor etiology, neither pathogenesis of colorectal cancer are well known. The link between inflammation and colorectal cancer has become a major concern in the past 20 years, since several clinical trials have shown that patients with chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases have a much higher risk of colorectal neoplasm development. In our study, we analyzed peritumoral inflammatory reaction from histological and immunohistochemical point of view, in 23 cases of stage III colon adenocarcinoma, operated during 2014. The immunohistochemical techniques were used in order to emphasize B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes, macrophages, mast cells and blood vessels. In all cases, we have noted the involvement of inflammatory cells present in peritumoral and tumoral stroma, in variable degrees, regardless the differentiation of the neoplasm or other known histological feature. In particular, the macrophages were the most numerous, especially in areas of tumoral necrosis, but also present in the lumen of tumoral glands, or even within tumoral cell islands. Mast cells appeared more abundant in the tumor stroma around blood vessels and were absent in the areas of tumor necrosis, while B-cells were almost absent. Tumor stroma showed a well-developed vascular network, consisting mainly of small vessels that do not seem to correlate with the intensity of the inflammatory reaction.

Colorectal cancer is an important public health problem worldwide, being the fourth most common cancer in men and the third most common in women. Colorectal cancer incidence is higher in developing countries due to the prevalence of obesity associated with reduced physical activity. Rectal mucinous carcinomas, especially the "signet ring cell" type, have a worse prognosis compared with other varieties of colorectal carcinomas, being diagnosed in more advanced stage and more prone to lymph node and peritoneal metastases. Our study comprised 37 cases with rectal adenocarcinoma with mucinous component operated in the Surgical Clinics of the Emergency County Hospital of Craiova, between 2006 and 2010. The aim of this study was to evaluate some molecular prognostic factors for rectal mucinous carcinomas namely B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and their correlations with the main morpho-clinical parameters of these patients. Thus, we immunohistochemically assessed the degree of apoptosis of tumor cells in mucinous rectal carcinomas using the Bcl-2 marker, and tumor aggressiveness using the EGFR responsiveness. In our study, the percentage of Bcl-2+ cases was 43.24%, with no significant statistical correlation between the Bcl-2 expression and histopathological subtype of mucinous adenocarcinoma. The evaluation of tumor aggressiveness in terms of EGFR responsiveness showed a reduced expression in carcinomas correlated with the increase in quantity of the mucinous component. In addition, EGFR reactivity was increased in the tumor invasion front.
