RESUMO

Smoking is one of the sources of thallium which is considered as a toxic heavy metal. The aim of this study was to determine urinary thallium levels and related variables in smokers, compared to a control group. The study was conducted on 56 participants who had smoked continuously during the year before they were referred to Kashan Smoking Cessation Clinic. Fifty-three nonsmokers who were family members or friends of the smokers were selected as the control group. Urinary thallium was measured in both groups (n = 109) using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean value (with SD) for urinary thallium in the smokers (10.16 ± 1.82 µg/L) was significantly higher than in the control group (2.39 ± 0.63 µg/L). There was a significant relationship between smoking duration and urinary thallium levels (P = 0.003). In a subgroup of smokers who was addicted to opium and opium residues (n = 9), the mean level of thallium (37.5 ± 13.09 µg/L) was significantly higher than in the other smokers (4.93 ± 4.45; P = 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed opioid abuse, insomnia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), together were strong predictors of urinary thallium levels in smokers. There was no significant difference in thallium level in hookah smokers (P = 0.299) or in those with COPD compared to other smokers (P = 0.375). Urinary thallium levels of smokers with clinical signs of depression, sleep disorders, memory loss, and sweating were higher than those of smokers without these signs. Since thallium, as other toxic metals is accumulated in the body, and cigarette smoking also involves carcinogenic exposures and health hazards for passively exposed people, the need for cigarette control policies is emphasized.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: One of the main therapeutic limitations of cisplatin (CP) is nephrotoxicity which is time-dependent. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal timing for initiation of CP toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty male and female Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups. All the animals in groups 2-5 received single dose of CP (10 mg/kg; i.p.), and were evaluated 25, 50, 75, and 100 hours after CP administration. Group 1 as an untreated group did not receive any agent and was considered as time zero. RESULTS: The data indicated time-dependent progression of kidney and hepatic toxicity due to CP administration. Histological examination showed increase in kidney tissue damage score (KTDS) at hour 25, which peaked 75-100 hours after CP administration. Significant body weight loss and reduction of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) 50 hours after CP injection were observed. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cr), and serum nitrite increased significantly 75 hours after CP injection. Also, enhancement of kidney and testis weights, and alkaline aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level; and reduction of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level and uterus weight occurred significantly 100 hours after the injection, while kidney malondialdehyde level enhanced significantly 75 hours after CP administration. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the CP-induced nephrotoxicity started to develop almost 3 days after administration of the drug in rats. CP surprisingly reduced the serum levels ALP and ALT while AST increased 100 hours after CP injection. CP-induced nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity are time-dependent, and the related biomarkers may alter by different trends.

RESUMO

The hydrodistilled essential oils obtained from aerial flowering parts of Teucrium stocksianum ssp. stocksianum (TSS) and T. stocksianum ssp. gabrielae (TSG) from Iran were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. The oil analysis of two subspecies led to the identification of 65 compounds that accounted for 93.3 and 95.1% of the total oil compositions, respectively. Sesquiterpenoids (52.9%) constituted the main compounds in the essential oil of TSS represented mainly by cis-sesquisabinene hydrate (12.0%), followed by epi-ß-bisabolol (6.6%), guaiol (5.4%), and ß-eudesmol (4.4%), whilst monoterpenoids (61.2%) were found to be the major components of the oil of TSG, represented by α-pinene (23.0%), ß-pinene (13.0%), myrcene (6.3%), and sabinene (6.3%). The principal component in both subspecies, TSS and TSG, was α-pinene (22.0 and 23.0%, resp.) and ß-pinene (6.5 and 13.0%, resp.). epi-α-Cadinol, myrcene, and sabinene, which were detected as principal compounds of TSG, were characterized in lower amounts (<1.5%) in the oil of TSS. Seven components were identified in the oil of TSS corresponding to 25.9% of total oil, which were totally absent in the oil of TSG, of which cis-sesquisabinene hydrate (12.0%), guaiol (5.4%), and ß-eudesmol (4.4%) were in considerable amounts. Taxonomic position of the subspecies is discussed on the basis of phytochemical data.
