RESUMO

While metal-organic framework (MOF) photocatalysts have demonstrated a unique Cr(VI) photoreduction capability in recent decades, their performance is still insufficient for practical applications because of their low Cr(VI) uptake and poor visible light response. To cope with these drawbacks, a new OH-modified Zr-based MOF, termed HCMUE-1, was successfully prepared via a solvothermal method in this work. The complete characterization of HCMUE-1 was performed through various techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained data exhibited the excellent Cr(VI) photoreduction efficiency of HCMUE-1, reaching up to 98% after 90 min and almost 100% after 120 min under visible light illumination in a low acidic medium. Noteworthily, HCMUE-1 retained the same Cr(VI) removal rate for at least seven cycles without considerable loss. Further experimental investigations demonstrated that the structural stability and surface morphology of HCMUE-1 were retained after photoreduction. Moreover, the photocatalytic reduction mechanism of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was interpreted through a series of systematic experimental measurements. These results indicate that HCMUE-1 possesses potential as an efficient photocatalyst for reducing toxic Cr(VI) species from wastewater in real-life conditions.

INTRODUCTION: The Vietnamese Smell Identification Test (VSIT) has been validated in determining olfactory dysfunction in the Vietnamese population; however, its value in diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD) has not been established. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted at University Medical Center HCMC, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study sample included non-demented PD patients and healthy controls (HC) who were gender- and age-matched. All participants were evaluated for odor identification ability using the VSIT and the Brief Smell Identification Test (BSIT). RESULTS: A total of 218 HCs and 218 PD patients participated in the study. The median VSIT and BSIT scores were significantly different between PD and HC groups (VSIT, 5 (3) vs. 9 (2), P < 0.0001; BSIT, 6 (3) vs 8 (2), P < 0.0001). Using the cut-off of <8 for correct answers out of 12 odorants, the VSIT had higher sensitivity (84.4%) and specificity (86.2%) than those of the BSIT (sensitivity of 81.7% and specificity of 69.3%) for the diagnosis of PD. The area under the curve (AUC) value was greater for the VSIT than for the BSIT (0.909 vs 0.818). The smell identification scores were not significantly correlated with disease duration, disease severity, or LEDD (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The VSIT can be a valuable ancillary tool for supporting the diagnosis of PD in Vietnam. Olfactory dysfunction in PD was unrelated to the disease duration and severity. The VSIT can be applied to improve the accuracy of clinical PD diagnosis.

Identification of new mechanisms mediating insulin sensitivity is important to allow validation of corresponding therapeutic targets. In this study, we first used a cellular model of skeletal muscle cell iron overload and found that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and insulin resistance occurred after iron treatment. Insulin sensitivity was assessed using cells engineered to express an Akt biosensor, based on nuclear FoxO localization, as well as western blotting for insulin signaling proteins. Use of salubrinal to elevate eIF2α phosphorylation and promote the unfolded protein response (UPR) attenuated iron-induced insulin resistance. Salubrinal induced autophagy flux and its beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity were not observed in autophagy-deficient cells generated by overexpressing a dominant-negative ATG5 mutant or via knockout of ATG7. This indicated the beneficial effect of salubrinal-induced UPR activation was autophagy-dependent. We translated these observations to an animal model of systemic iron overload-induced skeletal muscle insulin resistance where administration of salubrinal as pretreatment promoted eIF2α phosphorylation, enhanced autophagic flux in skeletal muscle and improved insulin responsiveness. Together, our results show that salubrinal elicited an eIF2α-autophagy axis leading to improved skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity both in vitro and in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) has been established as a promising clinical intervention within a late time window of 6-24 h after symptom onset. Patients with slow progression, however, may still benefit from endovascular treatment beyond the 24-h time window (very late window). AIM: The aim of this study is to report insight into the potential clinical benefits of endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke beyond 24 h from symptom onset. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on consecutive patients undergoing endovascular treatment for acute anterior circulation LVO ischemic stroke beyond 24 h. Participants were recruited between July 2019 and November 2020. Patients were selected based on the DAWN/DEFUSE 3 criteria (Perfusion-RAPID, iSchemaView) and patients receiving treatment beyond 24 h were compared to a group of patients receiving endovascular treatment between 6 and 24 h after symptom onset. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with functional independence at 90 days (modified Rankin Scale score of 0-2). The secondary outcomes were shift modified Rankin Scale (mRS) analysis and successful reperfusion was defined by thrombolysis in cerebral infarction (TICI) 2b-3 on the final procedure. Safety outcomes were symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and death at the 90-day follow-up. Propensity score (PS)-matched analyses were employed to rectify the imbalanced baseline characteristics between the two groups. RESULTS: A total of 166 patients were recruited with a median age of 63.0 (56.0-69.0) and 28.9% of all patients were females. Patients in the beyond 24-h group had a longer onset-to-groin time (median = 27.2 vs 14.3 h, p < 0.001) than those in the 6- to 24-h group. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (median = 12.0 vs 15.0, p = 0.37), perfusion imaging characteristics (core: median = 11.0 vs 9.0 mL, p = 0.86; mismatch volume: median = 106.0 vs 96.0, p = 0.44; mismatch ratio = 6.46 vs 7.24, p = 0.91), and perfusion-to-groin time (median = 72.5 vs 76.0 min, p = 0.77). No significant differences were noted among patients between the two groups in the primary endpoint functional independence analysis (50.0% vs 46.6%, p = 0.77) and in the safety endpoint analysis: mortality (15.0% vs 11.0%, p = 0.71) or symptomatic hemorrhage (0% vs 3.42%, p > 0.999). In PS-matched analyses, there were no significant differences among patients between the two groups in functional independence (50.0% vs 54.8%, p = 0.74), mortality (16.7% vs 9.68%, p = 0.50), or symptomatic hemorrhage (0% vs 6.45%, p = 0.53). CONCLUSION: Endovascular treatment can be performed safely and effectively in LVO patients beyond 24 h from symptom onset when selected by target mismatch profile. The clinical outcome of these patients was comparable to those treated in the 6- to 24-h window. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Having sizes comparable with living cells and high abundance, ultrafine bubbles (UBs) are prone to inevitable interactions with different types of cells and facilitate alterations in physiological properties. The interactions of four typical cell types (e.g., bacterial, fungal, plant, and mammalian cells) with UBs have been studied over recent years. For bacterial cells, UBs have been utilized in creating the capillary force to tear down biofilms. The release of high amounts of heat, pressure, and free radicals during bubble rupture is also found to affect bacterial cell growth. Similarly, the bubble gas core identity plays an important role in the development of fungal cells. By the proposed mechanism of attachment of UBs on hydrophobin proteins in the fungal cell wall, oxygen and ozone gas-filled ultrafine bubbles can either promote or hinder the cell growth rate. On the other hand, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and mass transfer facilitation are two means of indirect interactions between UBs and plant cells. Likewise, the use of different gas cores in generating bubbles can produce different physical effects on these cells, for example, hydrogen gas for antioxidation against infections and oxygen for oxidation of toxic metal ions. For mammalian cells, the importance of investigating their interactions with UBs lies in the bubbles' action on cell viability as membrane poration for drug delivery can greatly affect cells' survival. UBs have been utilized and tested in forming the pores by different methods, ranging from bubble oscillation and microstream generation through acoustic cavitation to bubble implosion.

Carbon xerogels (CXs) provide unique opportunities for numerous applications in the areas of adsorption, separation, insulation, catalysis, and electrochemistry, but their use is hampered by time- and energy-intensive synthesis protocols. Synthesis protocols may require several days or more. Here, we report the synthesis of CXs requiring only 5 h using hydrothermal gelation and direct carbonization of the wet polymer. Drying of the polymer gel is of utmost importance for the synthesis of closely related carbon aerogels and is generally considered to be essential for the preparation of CXs. We show that skipping this step has no detrimental effect on the properties of CXs. They are identical to those obtained via conventional routes. With this "superfast" synthesis route, CXs with specific surface areas of about 700 m2 g-1 and total pore volumes up to 1.5 cm3 g-1 are obtained very time-efficiently and without loss of performance.

Introduction: The 12-item Vietnamese smell identification test (VSIT) has been developed to evaluate the olfactory function of the Vietnamese population. This study aimed to investigate the normative value of the VSIT in different age groups and sexes. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Ho Chi Minh University Medical Center, Vietnam. All participants were evaluated for odor identification ability using the VSIT. We included healthy participants aged 18 years or older with no history of olfactory disturbances. Results: A total of 391 healthy volunteers were recruited with a mean age of 45.80 years (SD: 17.62; range: 18-86; female: 63.4 %). The tenth percentile of scores on the 0-12 VSIT scale was 8.3 in participants aged 18-29 years, 9.0 in 30-39 years, 8.0 in 40-49 years, 7.8 in 50-59 years, 7.9 in 60-69 years and 6.0 in over 70 years. Young adults (18-39 years old) had better olfactory identification ability than older adults (over 50 years), p < 0.001. There was a significant main effect of sex on VSIT score (p = 0.02), suggesting that females outperformed males. Sensitivity to 8 odors were negatively correlated with age: lemon, garlic, banana, coffee, mango, guava, apple and watermelon (p < 0.05 in all cases) whereas four odors were age-independent including orange, fish sauce, soy sauce, and fish. Conclusion: Normative data provide guidance for assessing individual olfactory function. However, there were significant sex and age effects on olfactory identification scores on the VSIT. Therefore, future studies should be conducted to better adjust for those confounders mentioned above.

While inflammation is an important immune response for protection from infections, excessive or prolonged inflammation can lead to a variety of debilitating diseases including skin disease, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, autoimmune diseases and cancer. Inflammation is a graded response that is typically initiated when resident macrophages sense the presence of pathogens or damage in the tissue and produce inflammatory cytokines and chemokines to kill the pathogen, clear debris and dead tissue, and initiate tissue repair. Here we show that copper-infused fabrics can prevent inflammation by blocking the production of inflammatory cytokines from macrophages after being exposed to LPS, a component of bacterial cell wall. Mechanistically, we show that copper-infused fabrics can significantly reduce the NF-κB and IRF3 activation in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Given the importance of excessive inflammation in diabetes, we show that copper can reduce insulin resistance mediated by inflammatory cytokines in muscle cells. Our data show that copper infused fabrics may be useful to reduce excessive inflammation in macrophages and improve insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscles.

During the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, vaccination against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has proven to be an important measure to help control disease spread and improve patient outcome. There are four distinct vaccine categories: inactivated viral vaccines, messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, adenovirus vector-based vaccines, and adjuvanted protein vaccines. In 2021, increased cases of myocarditis and pericarditis were reported after mRNA and adenovirus vector-based COVID-19 vaccination. A similar reporting pattern has not been observed after receipt of inactivated virus vaccines. Here, we present a case of clinically suspected acute myocarditis in a 26-year-old female, occurring 11 days after the administration of Sinopharm Vero Cell, an inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccine. This event led to acute heart failure, with marked clinical resolution observed within 34 days.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The global market for AI systems used in lung tuberculosis (TB) detection has expanded significantly in recent years. Verifying their performance across diverse settings is crucial before medical organisations can invest in them and pursue safe, wide-scale deployment. The goal of this research was to synthesise the clinical evidence for the diagnostic accuracy of certified AI products designed for screening TB in chest X-rays (CXRs) compared to a microbiological reference standard. METHODS: Four databases were searched between June to September 2022. Data concerning study methodology, system characteristics, and diagnostic accuracy metrics was extracted and summarised. Study bias was evaluated using QUADAS-2 and by examining sources of funding. Forest plots for diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curves were constructed for the AI products individually and collectively. RESULTS: 10 out of 3642 studies satisfied the review criteria however only 8 were subject to meta-analysis following bias assessment. Three AI products were evaluated with a 95 % confidence interval producing the following pooled estimates for accuracy rankings: qXR v2 (sensitivity of 0.944 [0.887-0.973], specificity of 0.692 [0.549-0.805], DOR of 3.63 [3.17-4.09], Lunit INSIGHT CXR v3.1 (sensitivity of 0.853 [0.787-0.901], specificity of 0.646 [0.627-0.665], DOR of 2.37 [1.96-2.78]), and CAD4TB v3.07 (sensitivity of 0.917 [0.848-0.956], specificity of 0.371 [0.336-0.408], DOR of 1.91 [1.4-2.47]). Overall, the products had a sensitivity of 0.903 (0.859-0.934), specificity of 0.526 (0.409-0.641), and DOR of 2.31 (1.78-2.84). CONCLUSION: Current publicly available evidence indicates considerable variability in the diagnostic accuracy of available AI products although overall they have high sensitivity and modest specificity which is improving with time. These preliminary results are limited by the small number of studies and poor coverage for low TB burden settings. More research is needed to expand the clinical evidence base for the performance of AI products.

Background: The drug-eluting stent was a significant stride forward in the development of enhanced therapeutic therapy for coronary intervention, with three generations of increased advancement. VSTENT is a newly developed stent manufactured in Vietnam that aims to provide coronary artery patients with a safe, effective, and cost-efficient option. The purpose of this trial was to determine the efficacy and safety of a new bioresorbable polymer sirolimus-eluting stent called VSTENT. Methods: This is a prospective, cohort, multicenter research in 5 centers of Vietnam. A prespecified subgroup received intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) or optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. We determined procedure success and complications during index hospitalization. We monitored all participants for a year. Six-month and 12-month rates of major cardiovascular events were reported. All patients had coronary angiography after 6 months to detect late lumen loss (LLL). Prespecified patients also had IVUS or OCT performed. Results: The rate of device success was 100% (95% CI: 98.3-100%; P<0.001). Major cardiovascular events were 4.7% (95% CI: 1.9-9.4%; P<0.001). The LLL over quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) was 0.08±0.19 mm (95% CI: 0.05-0.10; P<0.001) in the in-stent segment and 0.07±0.31 mm (95% CI: 0.03-0.11; P=0.002) in 5 mm within the two ends of the stent segment. The LLL recorded by IVUS and OCT at 6 months was 0.12±0.35 mm (95% CI: 0.01-0.22; P=0.028) and 0.15±0.24 mm (95% CI: 0.02-0.28; P=0.024), respectively. Conclusions: This study's device success rates were perfect. IVUS and OCT findings on LLL were favorable at 6-month follow-up. One-year follow-up showed low in-stent restenosis (ISR) and target lesion revascularization (TLR) rates, reflecting few significant cardiovascular events. VSTENT's safety and efficacy make it a promising percutaneous intervention option in developing nations.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) is an excellent biomarker for the non-invasive quantification of hepatic steatosis. AIM: To examine clinical and histologic factors associated with discordance between steatosis grade determined by histology and MRI-PDFF in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) METHODS: We included 728 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD from UC San Diego (n = 414) and Yokohama City University (n = 314) who underwent MRI-PDFF and liver biopsy. Patients were stratified by steatosis, and matched with MRI-PDFF cut-points for each steatosis grade: 0 (MRI-PDFF < 6.4%), 1 (MRI-PDFF: 6.4%-17.4%), 2 (MRI-PDFF: 17.4%-22.1%), 3 (MRI-PDFF ≥ 22.1%). Primary outcome was major discordance defined as ≥2 steatosis grade difference determined by histology and MRI-PDFF. RESULTS: Mean (±SD) age and BMI were 55.3 (±13.8) years and 29.9 (±4.9) kg/m2 , respectively. The distributions of histology and MRI-PDFF-determined steatosis were 5.5% grade 0 (n = 40), 44.8% 1 (n = 326, 44.8%), 33.9% 2 (n = 247), and 15.8% 3 (n = 115) vs. 23.5% grade 0 (n = 171), 49.7% 1 (n = 362), 12.9% 2 (n = 94), and 13.9% 3 (n = 101). Major discordance rate was 6.6% (n = 48). Most cases with major discordance had greater histology-determined steatosis grade (n = 40, 88.3%), higher serum AST and liver stiffness, and greater likelihood of fibrosis ≥2, ballooning ≥1 and lobular inflammation ≥2 (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Histology overestimates steatosis grade compared to MRI-PDFF. Patients with advanced NASH are likely to be upgraded on steatosis grade by histology. These data have important implications for steatosis estimation and reporting on histology in clinical practice and trials, especially in patients with stage 2 fibrosis.

Introduction: Significant advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease over the years. New generations of scaffolds containing novel material and eluting drug have produced one of the most significant advancements in coronary intervention. The newest generation would be Magmaris with a magnesium frame and a sirolimus cover. Methods: From July 2018 to August 2020, 58 patients treated with Magmaris at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City were enrolled in this study. Results: A total of 60 lesions were stented, 60.3% of which were left anterior descending (LAD) lesions. There was no in-hospital event. Within 1 year after discharge, we noted one myocardial infarction event that required target-lesion revascularization, one stroke event, one non-target-lesion revascularization patient, two target-vessel revascularization patients, and one in-stent thrombosis. Among them, one myocardial infarction occurrence, one non-target-lesion revascularization, and one in-stent thrombosis event were recorded within the first 30 days after discharge. Conclusion: In conclusion, the Magmaris scaffold is a safe and effective option for structural procedures performed with imaging device support, particularly intravascular ultrasound.

A new species of Hedyotis L. (Rubiaceae), Hedyotiskonhanungensis B.H. Quang, T.A. Le, K.S. Nguyen & Neupane, is described and illustrated from the central highlands of Vietnam based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. The new species belongs to the morphologically diverse tribe Spermacoceae (ca. 1000 species) of the family Rubiaceae, which is represented by 70-80 species in Vietnam. The phylogenetic analysis, based on four DNA regions (ITS, ETS, petD, rps 16), confirms the new species' placement within the genus Hedyotis - one of the largest genera in the tribe, comprising ca. 180 species across Asia and the Pacific. Hedyotiskonhanungensis is morphologically distinct from all southeastern Asian Hedyotis L. in its set of traits such as leaf type (shape and thickness), growth habit, and floral parts (color of inflorescence axis and the shape of calyx lobes). The new species shows similarities with Hedyotisshenzhenensis, H.shiuyingiae, and H.yangchunensis from China in its herbaceous habit, fleshy ovate leaf blades, and dark purple floral parts, but it is phylogenetically distinct and can be distinguished from them by the following combination of morphological traits: habit with slightly smaller stature (<25 cm), broadly ovate or deltoid stipules with cuspidate apex and entire margin, and ovate or nearly ovate calyx lobes.

RESUMO

Raphiocarpustaygiangensis, a new species of Gesneriaceae family discovered in Tay Giang District, Quang Nam Province, Central Vietnam, is here described and illustrated. The new species is diagnosed by the combination of its stem up to 2 m long, sericeous hairs on young stem, leaf petiole and adaxial mid-vein, sparsely and minutely serrate leaf margin, axillary inflorescence spreading along stem, sparsely long gland-tipped hairs on peduncle, pedicel, calyx, outside corolla and pistil, calyx 5-disparted from base, purplish white flower with purple stripes inside corolla tube, and dish-shaped stigma formed by 2 semi-orbicular lobes horizontally expanding. Distinct features of the new species and its morphologically closest congener, Rhaphiocarpusaxillaris, are compared and discussed. The conservation status of the described species is estimated as Vulnerable (VU D2) according to the IUCN Red List Criteria.

A late consequence of COVID-19, organizing pneumonia is characterized by significant imaging and pathological abnormalities. The goals of this study are to better understand these abnormalities. The use of corticoid continues to be the recommended course of treatment for COVID-19. On the other hand, it is not clear whether or not corticoid has the same impact on organizing pneumonia after COVID-19. A 53-year-old male patient was identified with organized pneumonia following COVID-19 infection. He was diagnosed after experiencing severe respiratory symptoms several days with no improvement. We initiated a high dose of corticoid based on imaging and pathological findings and observed a significant response. In addition, we looked into the research that has been done concerning the diagnosis and treatment of this peculiar ailment. Patients who have been diagnosed with pneumonia after COVID 19 are required to undergo a reevaluation that includes a chest CT scan, and some of these patients may be candidates for an early lung biopsy. The most effective and convincing therapy for COVID-19-induced organizing pneumonia is corticoid treatment at a dose equivalent to 0.5 mg/kg/day of prednisone.

Virus survival on fomites may represent a vehicle for transmission to humans. This study was conducted to optimize and validate a recovery method for the porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSV), a potential SARS-CoV-2 surrogate, from stainless steel. Coupons (1.5 × 1.5 cm) inoculated with ca. 7 logs TCID50 of PRRSV were dried for 15 min at room temperature, followed by incubation at 4°C and 35% relative humidity. After 1 h and 24 h, the coupons were processed by four different methods: vortex in DMEM media, vortex in DMEM media with beads, vortex in elution buffer, and shake in elution buffer. The rinsates were processed for titration using the TCID50 method in the MARC-145 cell line. All four methods were equally effective to recover the virus from the soiled SS surfaces (> 79% recovery). The amount of infectious virus recovered after 24 h was similar (P > 0.05) to that recovered after 1 h, indicating that the virus was stable at 4°C for up to 24 h. Using an elution buffer followed by shaking was the least labor-intensive and most economical method. Therefore, this method will be used for future experiments on PRRSV survival and transfer from food-contact surfaces.

Little is known about trends in teledermatology adoption and use for managing dermatologic patients, especially changes in use influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed encounter data from the Healthjump dataset (containing electronic health record data from throughout the USA) for visits from November 2019 to July 2021 with a primary dermatology-related diagnosis. There was a striking rise in teledermatology use with the onset of the pandemic in February 2020, peaking in April 2020 with 2178 teledermatology encounters (32.8% of all encounters). Subsequently, teledermatology use waned. Most teledermatology care was delivered via synchronous means with little use of asynchronous or telephone communication. When compared to those with neoplastic skin diseases, patients with inflammatory skin diseases were more likely to be seen via teledermatology (OR 3.30, 95% CI 3.12-3.49). Certain demographic groups were less likely to receive care via teledermatology, such as men (compared with females, OR 0.76, 95% CI 0.74-0.78) and patients 65 and older (compared with those below 65, OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.57-0.62). Our work shows increased adoption of teledermatology at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic with decreasing use over time. Future efforts are needed to ensure continued and expanded use of a valuable care modality to reach vulnerable populations.

Organ transplant recipients (OTRs) are at a significantly elevated risk for developing cutaneous malignancies. In recent years, the advent of dermatology clinics dedicated to this specific patient population has aimed to provide increased access and specialized care, including important sun-protective behavior education. It has been shown that OTRs tend to have poor sun-protective practices, and care at these specialized dermatology clinics has facilitated an improvement in sun-protective behavior. Previously, sun-protective behavior of patients within these specialized clinics has been characterized longitudinally, though only for a short duration of 3 months. We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 230 OTRs seen at a single academic institution's transplant clinic between 2016-2020 and sought to characterize sun-protective behavior at baseline and longitudinally. 78 patients returned for at least one follow-up visit, and the median follow-up duration was 15.1 months (IQR 8.4-24.3 months). Sun-protective behavior was quantified using the average score of questions addressing sunscreen usage frequency, consistency, circumstance of application, reapplication, and sun avoidance. We utilized paired Wilcoxon signed-rank tests to analyze changes in sun-protective behavior between initial visits and subsequent follow-up visits. Sun-protective behavior was increased at the first follow-up visit (median change in sun-protective score - 0.04, p = 0.017) and second follow-up visit (median change in sun-protective score - 0.25, p = 0.026) compared to the initial visit. Multivariable logistic regression and mixed effects modeling were employed to quantify patient features associated with increased sun-protective behavior. Female sex [OR 3.79, 95% CI (1.83, 8.04)] and personal history of skin cancer [OR 3.06, 95% CI (1.25, 7.76)] were associated with stronger sun-protective behaviors at baseline. Female sex [OR 13.77, 95% CI (2.44, 77.52)] was the only characteristic associated with increased sun-protective behavior over time. Our findings identify patient characteristics that are associated with increased sun-protective behavior after education in a dermatology clinic dedicated to OTRs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and identify factors influencing mobility among older adults during the first 5 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: A cross-sectional telesurvey. SETTING: Community dwelling older adults, situated within the first 5 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Hamilton, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: A random sample of 2343 older adults were approached to be in the study, of which 247 completed the survey (N=247). Eligible participants were aged ≥65 years. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mobility was measured using global rating of change items and the Late Life Function Instrument (LLFI). Multivariate linear regression models were used to examine the association between mobility and related factors based on Webber's model. RESULTS: 247 older adults (29% male, mean age 78±7.3 years) completed surveys between May and August 2020. Respectively, 26%, 10%, and 9%, rated their ability to engage in physical activity, housework, and move around their home as worse compared with the start of the pandemic. The mean LLFI score was 60.9±13.4. In the model, walking volume (ß=0.03 95% confidence interval 0.013, 0.047), fall history (ß=-0.04, 95% confidence interval -0.08, -0.04), male sex (ß=0.06, 95% confidence interval 0.02, 0.09), unpleasant neighborhood (ß=-0.06, 95% confidence interval -0.11, -0.02), musculoskeletal pain (ß=-0.07, 95% confidence interval -0.11, -0.03), and self-reported health (ß=0.08, 95% confidence interval 0.03, 0.13) had the strongest associations with LLFI scores and explained 64% of the variance in the LLFI score. CONCLUSIONS: Physical and environmental factors may help explain poorer mobility during lockdowns. Future research should examine these associations longitudinally to see if factors remain consistent over time and could be targeted for rehabilitation.
