During a survey of Mucorales from a forest located in Pernambuco state, Brazil, two new Backusella species were discovered and described based on morphological and molecular data (internal transcribed spacer and large subunit ribosomal DNA sequences). Both species were characterized as unbranched sporangiophores and sporangia with columellae of varied shapes forming. Multispored sporangiola were frequent, whereas unispored sporangiola were rare. URM 8395 forms sporangiophores that may support hyaline, slightly curved or circinate pedicels with multispored sporangiola at their apical portion, and abundant giant cells and chlamydospores. Columellae of sporangia are hyaline, conical (majority), or ellipsoidal with a truncate base, globose to subglobose or subglobose to conical, and, rarely, with slight medial constriction. URM 8427 does not form sporangiola from pedicels, giant cells are not observed, and columellae of sporangia are globose to subglobose, cylindrical with a truncate base, some with a slight constriction, applanate, obovoid, ellipsoidal, or, rarely, conical. Some columellae may have one side more swollen than the other and some are arranged obliquely on the sporangiophores. Sterile sporangia may or may not be formed on short sporophores. The detailed description and illustration of both novel species as well as an identification key for Backusella from the Americas are provided.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting as a vaginal mass in pregnancy is uncommon. CASE: A 38-year-old primigravid woman presented at 27 weeks of gestation with vaginal lesions, bleeding, and discharge. Previous vaginal biopsies had been consistent with vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia 1 and lichen planus. After admission for this enlarging vaginal mass and bleeding, she was noted to have a newly palpable breast mass. Biopsy of the breast mass and subsequent re-evaluation of original vaginal biopsies were consistent with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. She was treated with chemoimmunotherapy during pregnancy and delivered a viable neonate at term. CONCLUSION: Although benign vaginal conditions are common, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of persistent or enlarging vaginal lesions in pregnancy.

In this report, we present Raman spectroscopy investigation of the thermal stability and dynamics of graphene edges. It is found that graphene edges (both armchair and zigzag) are not stable and undergo modifications even at temperature as low as 200 °C. On the basis of polarized Raman results, we provide possible structural models on how graphene edges change during annealing. The zigzag edges rearrange and form armchair segments that are ±30° relative to the edge direction, while armchair edges are dominated by armchair segments even at annealing temperature as high as 500 °C. The modifications of edge structures by thermal annealing (zigzag segments rearrange in form of armchair segments) provide a flexible way to control the electronic properties of graphene and graphene nanostructures.

RESUMO

Laminin-5, a major adhesive ligand for epithelial cells, undergoes processing of its gamma2 and alpha3 chains. This study investigated the mechanism of laminin-5 processing by keratinocytes. BI-1 (BMP-1 isoenzyme inhibitor-1), a selective inhibitor of a small group of astacin-like metalloproteinases, which includes bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP-1), mammalian Tolloid (mTLD), mammalian Tolloid-like 1 (mTLL-1), and mammalian Tolloid-like 2 (mTLL-2), inhibited the processing of laminin-5 gamma2 and alpha3 chains in keratinocyte cultures in a dose-dependent manner. In a proteinase survey, all BMP-1 isoenzymes processed human laminin-5 gamma2 and alpha3 chains to 105- and 165-kDa fragments, respectively. In contrast, MT1-MMP and MMP-2 did not cleave the gamma2 chain of human laminin-5 but processed the rat laminin gamma2 chain to an 80-kDa fragment. An immunoblot and quantitative PCR survey of the BMP-1 isoenzymes revealed expression of mTLD in primary keratinocyte cultures but little or no expression of BMP-1, mTLL-1, or mTLL-2. mTLD was shown to cleave the gamma2 chain at the same site as the previously identified BMP-1 cleavage site. In addition, mTLD/BMP-1 null mice were shown to have deficient laminin-5 processing. Together, these data identify laminin-5 as a substrate for mTLD, suggesting a role for laminin-5 processing by mTLD in the skin.
