RESUMO

This article describes the use of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) during the endodontic treatment of teeth with periapical lesion. Patients presented tooth 35 with diagnostic hypotheses of Periapical Cyst or Granuloma. The Crown-Down preparation was performed with the HyFlex CM system. In case I it was not possible to reach the working length, in case II the foraminal debridement was performed at the actual tooth length. In the final irrigation, the E1 - Irrisonic ultrasonic insert was used, promoting sequentially agitation of NaOCl 2.5%, EDTA 17% and NaOCl 2.5%. Then, PDT was applied with 0.005% methylene blue dye. Calcium Hydroxide with Parammonochlorophenol was used and after 15 days, the final irrigation protocol and PDT were performed again. After 90 days of case I and 1 year of case II, the total lesion regression was observed in both cases. It is concluded that the proposed treatment improved the microbial disinfection favoring the regression of the periapical alterations providing satisfactory clinical and radiographic results.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of age, gender, mandibular bone height, previous experience with prostheses, and methods for denture fabrication on masticatory performance of complete denture (CD) wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study, 29 individuals treated with CDs fabricated by simplified or conventional methods had their masticatory performance assessed 4 weeks after the prostheses' adjustment and control, using the sieve method and almonds as a natural food test. Experimental variables related to age, gender, and previous use of complete dentures were collected from dental records. Panoramic digital radiographs were used to determine mandibular bone height according to the criteria described by the American College of Prosthodontists. Data on masticatory performance were assessed using t-test for independent samples to make comparison between simplified and conventional methods, and a multiple linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of age, gender, previous experience with CDs, and mandibular bone height on masticatory performance using SPSS software with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: There was no significant influence regarding the method for CD fabrication (p = 0.92), age (p = 0.36), mandibular bone height (p = 0.37), and previous experience with prostheses (p = 0.15) on masticatory performance of CD wearers. Female patients presented lower masticatory performance than male (p = 0.04) patients did. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the limitations of this study, it was concluded that gender might be considered a risk factor for masticatory performance of CD wearers. Female patients demonstrated reduced masticatory performance in comparison to male patients.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper was to compare the efficacy of two different anti-inflammatory agents, Diclofenac (Deltaflogin®) and Lumiracoxib (Prexige®) in the control of postoperative pain that results from surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. Twenty adult patients from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division of the Araraquara Dentistry School, UNESP who presented bilateral impacted lower third molars were included in the study. Removal of the impacted teeth was performed in each side in different operative moments in a split mouth design for the study. The anti-inflammatory drugs evaluated were randomly administered on the first and second surgical procedures. The pain level was recorded using an analogical visual scale at 6, 24, 48 and 72 hours after surgical intervention. Both lumiracoxib 400 mg and diclofenac 100 mg are efficient for acute pain control after surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. However, lumiracoxib offered better pain control.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of digitization parameters on periapical radiographic image quality, with regard to anatomic landmarks. digitized images (n = 160) were obtained using a flatbed scanner with resolutions of 300, 600 and 2400 dpi. the radiographs of 2400 dpi were decreased to 300 and 600 dpi before storage. Digitizations were performed with and without black masking using 8-bit and 16-bit grayscale and saved in tiff format. Four anatomic landmarks were classified by two observers (very good, good, moderate, regular, poor), in two random sessions. Intraobserver and interobserver agreements were evaluated by Kappa statistics. Inter andintraobserver agreements ranged according to the anatomic landmarks and resolution used. The results obtained demonstrated that the cement enamel junction was the anatomic landmark that presented the poorest concordance. The use of black masking provided better results in the digitized image. the use of a mask to cover radiographs during digitization is necessary. therefore, the concordance ranged from regular to moderate for the intraobserver evaluation and concordance ranged from regular to poor for interobserver evaluation.

Since the laser light acts as bio-modulator and bio-stimulator of the healing process, one may expect that a specific laser therapy could also stimulate the odontoblasts to synthesizeand deposit dentinal matrix in order to prevent in vivo dentinal sensitivity. Objective: The aimof this study was to evaluate the metabolic activity of an odontoblast-cell line (MDPC-23)submitted to the low power laser therapy. Material and Methods: MDPC-23 cells were platted(3 x 104 cells/cm2) and incubated with complete medium (10% fetal bovine serum – FBS) orwith nutritional deficiency (2.5% FBS or 5% FBS) in order to simulate stress conditions for theMDPC-23 cells. The cells were suibmitted to the laser irradiation by using wave lengths of 830 nmin the infra-red ray (AsGaAl) or 685 nm in the visible light (InGaAlP), both emitting continuousand punctual radiation. Finally, the cell metabolism was evaluated by the MTT assay and thenumerical scores obtained were submitted to the statistical analysis. Results: It was demonstratedthat the standardized experimental techniques of irradiation employed in this experiment causedno significant increase in the cell metabolism. Conclusion: According to the experimental conditions, it was possible to conclude the metabolism of the MDPC-23 odontoblastic-like cellsis bio-modulated by the red laser and next infra-red ray when these cells are in stress conditioninduced by nutritional deficiency.
