RESUMO

Deterministic photon sources allow long-term advancements in quantum optics. A single quantum emitter embedded in a photonic resonator or waveguide may be triggered to emit one photon at a time into a desired optical mode. By coherently controlling a single spin in the emitter, multi-photon entanglement can be realized. We demonstrate a deterministic source of three-qubit entanglement based on a single electron spin trapped in a quantum dot embedded in a planar nanophotonic waveguide. We implement nuclear spin narrowing to increase the spin dephasing time to T 2 * ≃ 33 ns, which enables high-fidelity coherent optical spin rotations, and realize a spin-echo pulse sequence for sequential generation of spin-photon and spin-photon-photon entanglement. The emitted photons are highly indistinguishable, which is a key requirement for scalability and enables subsequent photon fusions to realize larger entangled states. This work presents a scalable deterministic source of multi-photon entanglement with a clear pathway for further improvements, offering promising applications in photonic quantum computing or quantum networks.

Nucleotides that contain two nucleobases (double-headed nucleotides) have the potential to condense the information of two separate nucleotides into one. This presupposes that both bases must successfully pair with a cognate strand. Here, double-headed nucleotides that feature cytosine, guanine, thymine, adenine, hypoxanthine, and diaminopurine linked to the C2'-position of an arabinose scaffold were developed and examined in full detail. These monomeric units were efficiently prepared by convergent synthesis and incorporated into DNA oligonucleotides by means of the automated phosphoramidite method. Their pairing efficiency was assessed by UV-based melting-temperature analysis in several contexts and extensive molecular dynamics studies. Altogether, the results show that these double-headed nucleotides have a well-defined structure and invariably behave as functional dinucleotide mimics in DNA duplexes.

RESUMO

Modifications in scattering strength of and local field enhancement by retardation-based plasmonic nanoantennas when being transformed from straight nanorods to split-ring resonators are investigated experimentally. Scattering properties are characterized with linear reflection and extinction spectroscopy of nanoantenna arrays, whereas local field enhancements are evaluated for individual nanoantennas using two-photon-excited photoluminescence (TPL) microscopy. The linear and nonlinear optical characterizations reveal that the optical response of nanoantennas is determined by the interference of counter-propagating short-range surface plasmon polaritons (SR-SPP) and that the transformation of nanorods into split-rings by bending significantly influences the scattering strength. Importantly, strong suppression of scattering for the fundamental SR-SPP resonance is observed when the bend radius is decreased, a feature that is attributed to the decrease in the nanoantenna electric-dipole response when bending the nanorods. The experimental observations are corroborated with numerical simulations using the finite-element method.

RESUMO

We present the results of optical characterization of metal V-groove waveguides using scanning near-field microscopy, showing broadband transmission with subwavelength confinement and propagation lengths exceeding 100 microm. An updated fabrication method using a combination of UV and nanoimprint lithography is presented. The developed approach is mass-production compatible, adaptable to different designs, and offers wafer-scale parallel fabrication of plasmonic components based on profiled metal surfaces.

RESUMO

We report on subwavelength plasmon-polariton guiding by triangular metal wedges at telecom wavelengths. A high-quality fabrication procedure for making gold wedge waveguides, which is also mass-production compatible offering large-scale parallel fabrication of plasmonic components, is developed. Using scanning near-field optical imaging at the wavelengths in the range of 1.43-1.52 microm, we demonstrate low-loss (propagation length approximately 120 microm) and well-confined (mode width congruent with 1.3 microm) wedge plasmon-polariton guiding along triangular 6-microm-high and 70.5 degree-angle gold wedges. Experimental observations are consistent with numerical simulations performed with the multiple multipole and finite difference time domain methods.
