RESUMO

Neural interfaces have great potential to treat disease and disability by modulating the electrical signals within the nervous system. However, whilst neural stimulation is a well-established technique, current neural interfaces are limited by poor recording ability. Low signal amplitudes necessitate the use of highly invasive techniques that divide or penetrate the nerve, and as such are unsuitable for chronic implantation. In this paper, we present the first application of the velocity selective recording technique to the detection of respiration activity in the vagus nerve, which is involved with treatments for epilepsy, depression, and rheumatoid arthritis. Further, we show this using a chronically implantable interface that does not divide the nerve. We also validate our recording setup using electrical stimulation and we present an analysis of the recorded signal amplitudes. The recording interface was formed from a cuff containing ten electrodes implanted around the intact right vagus nerve of a Danish Landrace pig. Nine differential amplifiers were connected to adjacent electrodes, and the resulting signals were processed to discriminate neural activity based on conduction velocity. Despite the average single channel signal-to-noise ratio of - 5.8 dB, it was possible to observe distinct action potentials travelling in both directions along the nerve. Further, contrary to expectation given the low signal-to-noise ratio, we have shown that it was possible to identify afferent neural activity that encoded respiration. The significance of this is the demonstration of a chronically implantable method for neural recording, a result that will transform the capabilities of future neuroprostheses.

The recent developments in X-ray detectors have opened new possibilities in the area of time-resolved pump/probe X-ray experiments; this article presents the novel use of a PILATUS detector to achieve X-ray pulse duration limited time-resolution at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), USA. The capability of the gated PILATUS detector to selectively detect the signal from a given X-ray pulse in 24 bunch mode at the APS storage ring is demonstrated. A test experiment performed on polycrystalline organic thin films of alpha-perylene illustrates the possibility of reaching an X-ray pulse duration limited time-resolution of 60 ps using the gated PILATUS detector. This is the first demonstration of X-ray pulse duration limited data recorded using an area detector without the use of a mechanical chopper array at the beamline.

A compact, multichannel dispersion-compensating filter is demonstrated with D=-4200 ps/nm, a +/-5-ps group delay ripple, <3-dB loss, and a 4.5-GHz passband width out of a 12.5-GHz free spectral range. We show that multistage designs can achieve a substantial increase in passband width and peak dispersion for a given group-delay ripple compared with single-stage designs. The dispersion-compensation effectiveness was demonstrated in a 320-km, seven-channel nonlinear system simulation for OC48 signals.

RESUMO

Extrapulmonary Pneumocystis carinii infections in AIDS are still rare although the number of cases is increasing. We present 2 cases of extrapulmonary pneumocystosis detected at our institution during an 8-month period. The first was a patient treated for P. carinii pneumonia (PCP) disseminated to liver, spleen and kidneys. The second patient had widely dissemination of P. carinii diagnosed at autopsy. Both patients had received aerosolised pentamidine (AP) for PCP prophylaxis. Totally we have treated patients with AP prophylaxis for 122 patient years and found a frequency of extrapulmonary spread of 1.6% compared to none in the 116 patient years on sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.
