RESUMO
BACKGROUND: In a laboratory arranged according to ergonomic rules, the influence of the work with screen monitor computer on the visual function was evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Visual efficiency before and after one-hour reading of a text from monitor was compared in 60 persons. There was 50 women and 10 men, aged 22-47. The research scheme comprised 10 trials. RESULTS: After work with the monitor, the most important changes were the following: diminished power of accommodation, removal of the near point of convergence and deviation of phoria for near vision. Statistical analysis, using Wilcoxon's test revealed significant differences between the results achieved before and after work concerning accommodation and convergence (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that weakness of these important visual functions could be the cause of eye-strain in computer operators.

Computer users complain of numerous visual discomforts. The paper discusses those connected with eye fatigue and changes in visual functions associated with the work with monitor screens; these can be alleviated with an ergonomic organization of the work unit. There is a need for a determination of the requirements in visual functions for computer users.

Visual function of 33 pseudophakic eyes of 28 persons were examined and compared with control group of 27 persons without any changes in visual system. In pseudophakia there was a distinct decrease of mesopic vision and increased glare sensitivity. Color vision was not significant affected. The authors consider that only few professional drivers, engine drivers and pilots with pseudophakia would be able to get positive evaluation of visual function for further usefulness in their profession.

To ascertain the role of Candida in denture stomatitis, the practitioner must conduct a mycologic examination of the acrylic resin denture surface, because it acts as a reservoir for continuous reinfection of the palate. Twenty-two patients were examined to compare the sensitivity of the standard technique of swabbing the denture to that of a newly developed cast agar replica technique for detecting Candida albicans. The dentures were swabbed and cast replicas of the tissue-fitting surface of the dentures were made of both study populations. The majority of cultures obtained by swabbing failed to detect the presence of Candida albicans, while all cast agar replicas grew Candida albicans. The replica method for the detection of Candida albicans in edentulous patients seemed to be a more sensitive method than currently available mycologic methods.
