RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Retirement and aging are phenomena that often occur simultaneously and lead to various physical and psychological changes in older adults. Retirement syndrome consists of symptoms such as feelings of emptiness, loneliness, uselessness, lack of clear understanding of future conditions and dissatisfaction with one's performance after retirement. This phenomenon requires interventions to adapt to these changes. Considering the supportive role of nurses, the formation of support groups as an effective intervention in adapting to transitional stages is emphasized. AIMS: This study aims to investigate the effect of older adults' participation in support groups on retirement syndrome. METHODS: This Quasi-experimental study recruited a total of 80 retired older adults meeting the inclusion criteria from three Retirement Associations (Retirement centers for social security retirees are among the institutions that have been set up by the government and this organization to provide face-to-face and offline services to social security retirees, as well as providing some facilities to this segment of the society). in Iran, Research samples were randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups. The demographic questionnaire and retirement syndrome questionnaire were completed by both groups at the beginning of the study. Then, four support group sessions lasting 60 to 90 min were held twice a week for the support group, and eight weeks after the end of the intervention, the questionnaires were completed for both groups. The data were analyzed using statistical tests in SPSS version 16. The significance level was set at p < 0.05 for all tests. RESULTS: The results of the covariance analysis showed that after the intervention, the feelings of helplessness and failure (p < 0.001), feelings of older and idleness (p = 0.027), and feelings of confusion and conflict (p = 0.002) were significantly less in the support group compared to the control group. In addition, the Feeling of trying and new direction (p < 0.001) was higher after the intervention. The paired t-test results showed that in the support group, the feelings of helplessness and failure (p < 0.001), feelings of older and idleness (p = 0.004), and feelings of confusion and conflict (p < 0.001) significantly decreased after the intervention compared to before it, while the feelings of trying and new direction (p = 0.004) significantly increased. Therefore, the results showed that after the intervention, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in all components of the retirement syndrome. CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that participation of retired older adults in support groups can significantly improve all components of retirement syndrome, leading to an improvement in their quality of life and satisfaction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Employing postgraduate students as Teaching Assistants (TA) has become a common practice in many higher education institutions and is part of a growing international trend for professional practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the barriers and facilitators to fulfilling the teaching assistant role from nursing students' perspective. METHODOLOGY: This qualitative-descriptive study was conducted in 2022 on teaching assistants in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. 13 teaching assistants were selected by targeted sampling method with maximum variation. The inclusion criteria were 2nd-semester postgraduate nursing students and above, having experience as a teaching assistant, and willing to participate in the research. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews for 45 to 60 min until saturation was reached. Data analysis was done manually and using the framework analysis method with steps: Familiarization, Identifying a thematic framework, indexing, Charting, data synthesis, mapping, and interpretation. The trustworthiness of the study data was determined with the Lincoln and Guba criteria. RESULTS: Barriers to fulfilling the TAs' role were divided into three main categories with nine subcategories: (1) Not accepting the teaching assistant as a clinical instructor (2) not being prepared to accept the TA role, and (3) improper planning of the TA plan. Facilitators are divided into two main categories with five subcategories: (1) internal motivation, and (2) empowering TAs. CONCLUSION: To facilitate management processes in the field of education and to achieve educational goals, including improving the quality of education and better learning, planning and compiling instructions to create written job descriptions for teacher assistants should be done, also, with careful planning, steps should be taken to scientifically employ capable teacher assistants as young and motivated forces in education processes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Workplace Incivility is a common issue in the nursing profession. Nurses who are affected by such behaviors may experience distress. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the relationship between workplace incivility and nurses' professional quality of life. RESEARCH DESIGN: This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in 2021 in "Tehran". Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Nursing Incivility Scale (NIS), and the Professional Quality Of Life scale (ProQOL). Data analysis was performed through the Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression, using the SPSS v.16. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: Participants were 200 nurses randomly recruited from selected hospitals of "TUMS". ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The study obtained research ethics approval and all participants were informed of the voluntary and anonymous nature of their participation. FINDINGS: The mean age of participants was 32.30 ± 7.22, and 76.5% were female. There was a significant correlation between the professional quality of life and workplace incivility (r = -0.23, p = .001). Multiple regression analysis between the subscales of workplace incivility and professional quality of life demonstrated that the incivility from the supervisor (ß = -0.29, p = .001) and incivility from patients (ß = -0.27, p < .001) can predict the compassion satisfaction dimension. The incivility from the supervisor (ß = 0.24, p = .001) and incivility from patients (ß = 0.26, p < .001) can explain burnout. The incivility of the patients can explain secondary traumatic stress (ß = 0.14, p = .02). CONCLUSION: This study showed that workplace incivility is significantly related to professional quality of life. Therefore, the reduction of behaviors of incivility can lead to the improvement of the professional quality of life.

RESUMO

Healthcare workers (HCWs), as frontline soldiers in the fight against COVID-19, were more exposed to the risk of contracting this disease. In addition to facing psychological, social, and physical trauma and post-traumatic stress due to the corona pandemic, HCWs were also exposed to complications due to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The impermeable and confining nature of some PPE poses complications for HCWs that can endanger their physical health, while also affecting the quality of healthcare they provide. Among the complications of using PPE, respiratory problems are more worrisome than other complications. This article makes a suggestion of a breathing room (BR) to improve the health and performance of HCWs in caring for patients with infectious respiratory diseases. A debate on the strengths of the implementation of a BR in hospitals is described.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Providing long-term home care to older adults with chronic diseases may endanger the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of caregivers and lead to care strain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the relationship of caregiver strain with resilience and hardiness in family caregivers of older adults with chronic disease. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted in 2020-2021 in Tehran. Participants were 230 family caregivers randomly recruited from 8 urban health care centers. Data were collected using a personal characteristics questionnaire, the Modified Caregiver Strain Index, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Family Hardiness Index, and the data were analyzed by using SPSS 22 version. Pearson's correlation coefficient was applied for data analysis. P-values ≤0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 230 caregivers participated in the study. The mean age of participants was (46.65 ± 13.63) years and most of them were female (73.9%). Mean scores of caregiver strain, resilience, and hardiness in family caregivers were 16.23 ± 4.5, 39.89 ± 10.9, and 31.21 ± 7.79, respectively. Pearson correlation showed a significant and inverse correlation between caregiver strain and resilience (r = -0.310, P = 0.002), and also a significant and inverse relationship between caregiver strain and hardiness (r = -0.276, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: In this study, family caregivers had moderate caregiver strain, low resilience, and high hardness. Caregiver strain in family caregivers of older adults with chronic disease is an important health issue associated with resilience and hardiness. To promote health, effective adaptation to long-term care, and reduce caregiver strain, designing effective interventions to increase resilience and hardiness in family caregivers seems necessary.

RESUMO

The current study aimed to assess the relationship of loneliness and social isolation with self-care ability (SCA) among older adults. Participants were 170 older adults randomly recruited from seven urban health care centers in Gonbad Kavus, Iran. Data were collected using a personal characteristics questionnaire, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Lubben Social Network Scale, and Self-Care Ability Questionnaire for the Elderly. Findings showed that 72.9% of participants reported mild loneliness and 2.4% reported severe loneliness. Mean scores of participants' loneliness, social isolation, and SCA were 29.91 (SD = 11.22), 18.57 (SD = 4.97), and 146.39 (SD = 7.62), respectively. Mean SCA score had a significant inverse relationship with mean loneliness score (ß = -0.368; p < 0.0001) and a significant direct relationship with mean social isolation score (ß = 0.726; p < 0.0001). Current findings can be used to develop interventions for reducing loneliness and social isolation and improving SCA among older adults. RESUMO

The current study aimed to investigate the effects of a Namaste care program on the quality of life of 25 women with late-stage Alzheimer's disease. The program was implemented two hours daily and four days per week for six months in a nursing facility, Tehran, Iran. Women's quality of life was measured using the Persian version of the Quality of Life in Late-Stage Dementia scale before and after the program implementation. After a six-month intervention with the Namaste care program, the total score of quality of life significantly decreased (17.79 ± 1.10 at the end of trial compared with 24.67 ± 1.62 at baseline, P = 0.01), indicating improved quality of life. This effect was obtained after controlling for demographic variables and comorbidities. Hence, it seems that the Namaste care program might be an effective supportive method to improve the quality of life of women with late-stage Alzheimer's disease in Iranian culture. However, further large-sample studies are needed to investigate the generalizability of the findings.
