The occurrence of two cases of metal pneumoconiosis in a metal works has been used to draw attention to this rare occupational disease. The technology for the manufacture and processing is described with special reference to dust exposure at the various stages. After an historical review, there is a detailed discussion of the clinical and radiological features of the two cases. Problems concerning the prognosis, differential diagnosis and the laws concerning compensation are discussed.

The phlebographic appearances of the post-thrombotic syndrome can be divided into four stages which are of importance with regard to diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. This division depends on the severity of the damage to the deep venous system. In addition it is necessary to define the superficial collateral circulation and to determine whether this is sufficient or not. Both before and after surgical treatment of the deep and superficial veins, it is necessary to define the situation by phlebography. The importance of serial phlebographic examinations during treatment, particularly with anticoagulants, is demonstrated by a series of cases.

The course and variations of the vena semicircularis and Giacomini veins has been studied. It appears that, despite the large variations encountered, three major types can be identified.

On the basis of more than 10,000 phlebographies we believe that the ascending phlebography with control by means of x-rays and accurate photographs, the so-called "phleboscopy", is the most appropriate of all techniques of phlebography for a routine ambulant examination of the veins. By means of phlebography we succeed in employing our therapeutical measures accurately, control of therapeutic results is possible. The phlebography informs about the morphological condition of the veinous system and the defluxion conditions. It serves for determining pathological conditions, such as the post-thrombotical syndrom in the case of acute deep thrombosis of the crural veins, and informs about the extent and defluxion conditions of the varicose veins as well as the sufficiency or insufficiency of the Vv. perforantes.
