Introduction: Pyogenic liver abscess is a noteworthy health concern in North America, characterized by a mortality rate ranging from 2 to 12%. This condition is often polymicrobial, with Streptococcus species and Escherichia coli as the predominant causal pathogens in Western countries. Fusobacterium species, typically commensals of gastrointestinal, genital, and oral flora, have been implicated in the rare formation of tonsillar abscesses and Lemierre syndrome, including its gastrointestinal variant known as pylephlebitis. Case Presentation: We present the case of an immunocompetent male with a 2-week history of abdominal distention and pain. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiseptated cystic hepatic masses and portal vein thrombosis. A subsequent liver biopsy confirmed Fusobacterium nucleatum etiology. The patient was initiated on intravenous cefepime and oral metronidazole antibiotics. Unfortunately, the patient succumbed to cardiac arrest before a final diagnosis could be established. Conclusion: Fusobacterium species-associated liver abscess, coupled with the rare gastrointestinal variant of Lemierre syndrome (pylephlebitis), poses a significant mortality risk. This case underscores the rarity and clinical challenges associated with these conditions. Increased awareness among clinicians is crucial for early diagnosis and prompt intervention, potentially improving outcomes in such cases.

BACKGROUND: Predictive markers represent a solution for the proactive management of severe dengue. Despite the low mortality rate resulting from severe cases, dengue requires constant examination and round-the-clock nursing care due to the unpredictable progression of complications, posing a burden on clinical triage and material resources. Accordingly, identifying markers that allow for predicting disease prognosis from the initial diagnosis is needed. Given the improved pathogenesis understanding, myriad candidates have been proposed to be associated with severe dengue progression. Thus, we aim to review the relationship between the available biomarkers and severe dengue. METHODOLOGY: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the differences in host data collected within 72 hours of fever onset amongst the different disease severity levels. We searched nine bibliographic databases without restrictive criteria of language and publication date. We assessed risk of bias and graded robustness of evidence using NHLBI quality assessments and GRADE, respectively. This study protocol is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018104495). PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Of 4000 records found, 40 studies for qualitative synthesis, 19 for meta-analysis. We identified 108 host and viral markers collected within 72 hours of fever onset from 6160 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases, including hematopoietic parameters, biochemical substances, clinical symptoms, immune mediators, viral particles, and host genes. Overall, inconsistent case classifications explained substantial heterogeneity, and meta-analyses lacked statistical power. Still, moderate-certainty evidence indicated significantly lower platelet counts (SMD -0.65, 95% CI -0.97 to -0.32) and higher AST levels (SMD 0.87, 95% CI 0.36 to 1.38) in severe cases when compared to non-severe dengue during this time window. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that alterations of platelet count and AST level-in the first 72 hours of fever onset-are independent markers predicting the development of severe dengue.

Tailoring the surface properties of materials for biomedical applications is important to avoid clinical complications. Forming thin layers of amphiphilic molecules with apolar regions that facilitate attractive intermolecular interactions, can be a suitable and versatile approach to achieve hydrophobic surface modification and provide functional antibacterial properties. Aiming to correlate layer structure and properties starting from film formation, octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) and dimethyloctadecyl (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) ammonium chloride (DMOAP) layers were adsorbed onto smooth titania surfaces. Then the films were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and their interactions with aqueous environments were characterized by contact angle and zeta potential measurements. In addition, antibacterial assays were performed using E. coli and S. mutants to reveal the antibacterial properties effected by the surface modification. Immediately after sputter deposition, titania was hydrophilic; however, after air storage and adsorption of DMOAP or ODPA, an increase in the water contact angle was observed. XPS investigations after layer formation and after antibacterial tests revealed that the attachment of layers assembled from ODPA on titania substrates is considerably stronger and more stable than that observed for DMOAP films. Heat treatment strongly affects DMOAP layers. Furthermore, DMOAP layers are not stable under biological conditions.

Animals use adhesive secretions in a plethora of ways, either for attachment, egg anchorage, mating or as either active or passive defence. The most interesting function, however, is the use of adhesive threads to capture prey, as the bonding must be performed within milliseconds and under unsuitable conditions (movement of prey, variable environmental conditions, unfavourable attack angle, etc.) to be nonetheless successful. In the following study a detailed characterization of the prey capture system of the world-renowned glowworm group Arachnocampa from the macroscopic to the ultrastructural level is performed. The data reveal that the adhesive droplets consist mostly of water and display hygroscopic properties at varying humidity levels. The droplet core of Arachnocampa luminosa includes a certain amount of the elements sodium, sulphur and potassium (beside carbon, oxygen and nitrogen), while a different element composition is found in the two related species A. richardsae and A. tasmaniensis. Evidence for lipids, carbohydrates and proteins was negative on the histochemical level, however X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the presence of peptides within the droplet content. Different to earlier assumptions, the present study indicates that rather than oxalic acid, urea or uric acid are present in the adhesive droplets, presumably originating from the gut. Comparing the capture system in Arachnocampa with those of orb-spiders, large differences appear not only regarding the silky threads, but also, in the composition, hygroscopic properties and size of the mucous droplets.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have demonstrated the unusual ability to both stabilize nanoclusters and facilitate catalytic activity by allowing substrate access to sufficient metallic surface area. This paper presents a wet chemical synthetic method to prepare Pd, Ag, and Au metal nanoclusters stabilized by tetrabutylammonium salts of Phosphotungstates with the well-known Keggin [α-PW(12)O(40)](3-) (PW(12)), Wells-Dawson [P(2)W(18)O(62)](6-) (P(2)W(18)), and their lacunary derivatives [α-PW(11)O(39)](7-) (PW(11)) and [P(2)W(15)O(56)](12-) (P(2)W(15)) structures. The preparation of this series of nanoclusters has facilitated a comparison of the effect these anions have in nanocluster stabilization and catalysis. The nanocluster systems were found to be re-dispersible in acetonitrile and acetone. The effect of aging on stability was followed over 3 months and it was found that many systems were very stable for more than 70 days without precipitation, depending on type of polytungstate stabilizer and the presence of competing ions. The PW(12), P(2)W(18), PW(11), and P(2)W(15) stabilized Pd nanoclusters have been investigated for catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of 1-hexene and were found to be very active with the P(2)W(18) stabilized Pd nanoclusters demonstrating a best of 139,000 Total Turnovers, thus ranking this "soluble heterogeneous catalyst" among one of the longest lived reported in the literature. The nanocluster systems were characterized using instrumental techniques such as UV-Visible Spectroscopy, FTIR Spectroscopy, Powder X-ray Diffraction, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy.
