BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with limited physical activity (PA) of most of the world's population. This cross-sectional prospective study aimed to assess the levels of PA of university students in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia after COVID-19 using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF). METHODS: A total of 2635 students completed questionnaires regarding their PA levels using the IPAQ-SF between September and December 2022. RESULTS: PA measured by metabolic equivalent of task (MET) scores, varied between the three countries: Slovakia median MET-minutes/week score 4459.9; Czech Republic 3838.8 Poland 3567.1. The results of the post hoc analysis revealed there were significant differences in MET-minutes/week values between the Czech Republic and Poland (p < 0.035) as well as between the Czech Republic and Slovakia (p < 0.037). The analysis of energetic expenditure during walking revealed that students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia had higher median MET-min/weeks values (Czech 2284.1; Slovak 2467.1) compared to their Polish (1536.1) peers (p < 0.001). Polish cohort presented with significantly higher body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001) than Czech and Slovak groups (BMI Czech: 22.3; Slovak 22.8; Polish 23.8). CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences in PA levels between the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia university students were identified. Slovakia showed the highest median PA measured as a MET score, and Poland showed the lowest. Compared to available pre-COVID studies it seems the total level of PA in the observed cohorts has not returned to the pre-COVID levels and students remain less active.

Surgical implantation of an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) remains the gold-standard treatment for severe erectile dysfunction. The ideal surgical technique requires a thorough understanding of the relevant anatomy. This includes anatomic considerations related to, but not limited to, dissection and exposure of penoscrotal fasciae and tissues, corporal configuration, and abdominal structures. Insights obtained from pre-dissected anatomic specimens can obviate urethral injury, nerve damage, corporal perforation, inappropriate sizing, crossover, or implant malposition. We present penile implant-specific anatomic dissections and topographic landmarks identified over the last decade in the course of surgical training programs provided for IPP implantation.

This study aimed to assess the correlation between covariates of the vaginal microbiota and local levels of proinflammatory cytokines in women of reproductive age presenting four molecularly defined bacterial community-state types (CSTs). We enrolled 133 non-pregnant women who attended primary care health clinics for routine Pap-testing. Molecular profiling of vaginal microbiota was performed by V3-V4 16S rRNA sequencing. The covariates of vaginal microbiota included were: vaginal pH, total bacterial cell count, diversity (Shannon index), -richness and dominant taxa abundances. Levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, and tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in supernatants of cervicovaginal fluids. Nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare microbiota covariates and cytokines among different CSTs. Spearman's tests were performed to assess correlations across the measured parameters. A total of 96 (72.2%) participants had CSTs dominated by Lactobacillus spp. (Lactobacillus crispatus CST I, n=38; Lactobacillus gasseri CST II, n=20; and Lactobacillus iners CST III, n=38). A total of 37 (27.8%) presented the Lactobacillus-depleted CST IV. Total bacterial count was higher in CST II (1.29E+05, 3.40E+04-6.69E+05) compared to other Lactobacillus-dominated CSTs (p=0.0003). The highest values of microbiota diversity (1.85; 0.23-2.68) and richness (27.0; 5.0-37.0) were observed in CST IV (P<0.0001). Lower levels of IL-1ß were observed in CST I (5.4; 0.0-3,256) when compared to CST III (51.7; 0.0-2,616) and to CST IV (56.2; 0.0-3,407) (P=0.008). Levels of IL-6 were higher in CST II (4.13; 0-131.4) than in CST IV (0.0-58.27) (P=0.02). Correlation tests showed an overall distinct profile of CST II when compared to other Lactobacillusdominated CSTs, particularly regarding the correlation between total bacterial load and cytokines (r>0.39). In conclusion, this study provides evidence of a single pro-inflammatory signature of L. gasseri-dominated microbiota in response to bacterial load. Further studies evaluating a broader range of inflammation markers are warranted.

BACKGROUND: In time, we may be able to detect the early onset of symptoms of depression and even predict relapse using behavioural data gathered through mobile technologies. However, barriers to adoption exist and understanding the importance of these factors to users is vital to ensure maximum adoption. METHOD: In a discrete choice experiment, people with a history of depression (N = 171) were asked to select their preferred technology from a series of vignettes containing four characteristics: privacy, clinical support, established benefit and device accuracy (i.e., ability to detect symptoms), with different levels. Mixed logit models were used to establish what was most likely to affect adoption. Sub-group analyses explored effects of age, gender, education, technology acceptance and familiarity, and nationality. RESULTS: Higher level of privacy, greater clinical support, increased perceived benefit and better device accuracy were important. Accuracy was the most important, with only modest compromises willing to be made to increase other factors such as privacy. Established benefit was the least valued of the attributes with participants happy with technology that had possible but unknown benefits. Preferences were moderated by technology acceptance, age, nationality, and educational background. CONCLUSION: For people with a history of depression, adoption of technology may be driven by the desire for accurate detection of symptoms. However, people with lower technology acceptance and educational attainment, those who were younger, and specific nationalities may be willing to compromise on some accuracy for more privacy and clinical support. These preferences should help shape design of mHealth tools.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The authors present the outcomes of more than ten-year clinical follow-up of patients who underwent surgical treatment of deep chondral defect of the knee (medial or lateral condyle). The method of treatment was the implantation of autologous cultured chondrocytes in the form of a solid chondral graft. The aim was also to compare the mid-term and long-term outcomes and to evaluate how the knee condition affects the everyday life and sports activities more than 10 years after surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty patients of the total of 56 patients (26 patients dropped out of the long-term follow-up) operated in the period between 2001 and 2012 were available for retrospective evaluation of the clinical condition before surgery, at 1, 2, 5 years after surgery and at 10+ years after surgery. The mean follow-up period of patients was 14.5 years (10 - 20.5 years) after surgery. The clinical evaluation was performed using the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale and the Tegner Activity Scale. RESULTS The mean preoperative Lysholm score of the followed-up study population was 37.5. During the fi rst two years, improvement was achieved to the maximum value of 83.1. At 5 years and subsequently also at more than 10 years after surgery, a slight decline was reported to the mean value of 78.6. When comparing the outcomes at 5 years and at more than 10 years after surgery, the decline in the value was statistically non-signifi cant. The mean value of the Tegner Activity Scale at more than 10 years after surgery was 4.5 points out of 10 points. DISCUSSION Management of a chondral defect especially in younger patients constitutes a common challenge in everyday orthopaedic practice. There are multiple methods at hand, all of which have their pros and cons. The size of the chondral lesion appears to be the limiting and decisive factor. The greatest pitfall are large chondral lesions (>4cm2 ), where many methods fail to yield satisfactory outcomes. One of the suitable options is the autologous chondrocyte implantation method. CONCLUSIONS The clinical outcomes of patients followed-up for more than 10 years after surgery do not show a statistically signifi cant decline compared to the mid-term outcomes. Based on the data obtained, we continue to consider the autologous chondrocyte implantation as an effective method to manage deep chondral defects in the knee. The patients were mostly able to get back to normal life, including their sports activities, with a signifi cant improvement of its quality compared to that before surgery. The level of cardiorespiratory capacity, as measured by maximum VO(2)max oxygen consumption, is a significant factor related to the risk of metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease and other health disorders. A total cohort of 2901 examinations was divided into 5 groups according to the nature of physical activity: group A - endurance athletes, group B - team sports players, group C - other competitive athletes, group D - recreational leisure-time athletes, group E - people with health problems. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed according to the VO(2)max and METmax parameters found in the stress test on a bicycle ergometer. A gradually increased load until exhaustion was used. While in groups A to D cases that would be classified as NYHA 1 (METmax lower than 9) were quite rare (10 cases out of 2777, i.e. 0.3 %), in groups E it was 20 % in men (16 cases out of 82) and 52 % in women (23 cases out of 44) of those examined. Accordingly, fitness age in groups A, B and C generally corresponded to a lower age than the calendar age, in groups E of both men and women, fitness age was significantly higher compared to the calendar age. High fitness age represents a significant risk of morbidity in relation to non-communicable diseases and probably also a significant limitation of their quality of life in later age.

BACKGROUND: For highly selected patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) from colorectal cancer (CRC), an aggressive surgical approach with intraperitoneal chemotherapy may be beneficial. This management may prolong overall survival, which is well documented by the results of a number of clinical trials. In the Czech Republic, five specialized centers of surgical oncology are able to perform cytoreductive surgery (CRS) in combination with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). All of these centers provided accurate information on the number of CRS procedures in 2018 in the PM CRC indication. The estimation of the prevalence of peritoneal metastases from CRC is based on data from the Czech National Cancer Registry. PURPOSE: To determine the number of cytoreductive procedures performed in patients with peritoneal metastases from CRC in the Czech Republic in 2018, and to compare it with the number of patients who could hypothetically benefit from this procedure according to statistical data. RESULTS: Twenty-five CRS/HIPEC procedures were performed on patients with peritoneal metastases from CRC in 2018 in the Czech Republic. However, based on the prevalence of peritoneal metastases from CRC in the Czech Republic, cytoreduction with intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) could probably bring benefit to a minimum of 150 patients a year in the Czech Republic. CONCLUSION: In the Czech Republic in 2018, the cytoreduction and HIPEC procedures for peritoneal metastases from CRC were performed in significantly fewer cases than would correspond to the estimated number of potentially curable patients.To increase the awareness of this issue and improve the number of potentially curative cytoreductive procedures, there will be necessary better awareness and closer cooperation among specialized centers, general surgeons, and clinical oncologists.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Evaluation of the success rate of revision ACL reconstruction using the cadaverous BTB allogeneic graft and comparison of the outcomes achieved with the data of patients after the primary ACL reconstruction using the autologous BTB graft with filtering out the potential effect of diversity of the groups of patients as concerns sex and age. MATERIAL AND METHODS The evaluated outcomes of 34 patients operated in the period 2004-2017, i.e. with the minimum follow-up period of three years, were compared with the outcomes of 34 patients selected individually so that in pairs the age and sex are identical - 10 women and 24 men in the range of age from 20 to 44 years, with the median of 29 years at the time of surgery. The assessment and comparison of the outcomes achieved are done according to the Lysholm and Tegner scores. RESULTS The mean Lysholm score of the patients after the revision ACL reconstruction using the cadaverous BTB allograft achieved 54.7 points preoperatively, 72.3 points at the 1-year follow-up and 77.4 points at the 3-year follow-up. The Tegner score at the time of full performance before the injury was 7.7 points, whereas it was 5.8 points after the injury and 6.5 points three years after the surgery. In the group of patients after the primary ACL reconstruction using the autologous BTB graft, the Lysholm score was 64.4 points preoperatively, 85.1 points one year postoperatively and 88.2 points three years postoperatively. The results according to the Tegner score achieved by the primary control group at respective follow-up periods were 6.7 points, 5.1 points and 6.2 points respectively. DISCUSSION The increase in the number of performed ACL reconstructions leads also to an increase in the number of revision surgeries. This trend is also fuelled by the change in the lifestyle, the shift in age-related indication criteria for surgery, and other factors. The realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the revision ACL reconstruction shall take into account the effect of multiple insults that the knee must withstand. Even though subjective improvement of the knee condition is usually experienced postoperatively, the achieved outcomes tend to be less positive than in primary reconstructions. The return to the original pre-injury level of sports activities is achieved less frequently after revision surgeries. CONCLUSIONS The revision surgery of ACL rupture using the cadaverous BTB graft is a safe and reliable technique. It has a potential to improve the subjective satisfaction of the patient, nonetheless the mean postoperative Lysholm score is not so high as that achieved in patients after primary ACL reconstruction. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Damage to hyaline cartilage represents a serious problem due to its limited capacity of regeneration. Currently, there are several treatment options available. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the success rate of treatment of chondral and osteochondral defects of the knee joint using the modified AMIC (Autologous Matrix-Induced Chondrogenesis) technique, combining microfractures of the base and the implantation of the type I collagen-based cell-free implant over a two-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS The prospective study of the success rate of treatment by the modified AMIC technique included 15 patients (13 men and 2 women) with a defect confirmed by MRI and appropriate indication criteria. The mean age at the time of implantation was 33.4 years (range 19-47 years). The mean size of a treated defect was 3.66 ± 1.71 cm2 (range 2.00-7.05 cm2). The clinical outcomes were monitored through the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), the Lysholm score and the Tegner activity scale preoperatively and subsequently at 6, 12 and 24 months postoperatively. Control MRI was conducted at 6, 12 and 18 months postoperatively. The MRI finding was evaluated using the Magnetic Observation of Cartilage Repair Tissue (MOCART) score. RESULTS The total KOOS score was 44.69 ± 7.71 preoperatively, while postoperatively it gradually increased up to 80.45 ± 8.97 (p < 0.001) at 24 months. The Lysholm score significantly rise from 43.47 ± 11.87 preoperatively to the mean value of 81.60 ± 13.07 (p < 0.001) at 24 months postoperatively. The preoperative Tegner score was 3.53 ± 1.41. At 24 months, there was a statistically significant increase to 5.40 ± 1.70 (p = 0.003). The mean MOCART score at 18 months postoperatively was 74.67 ± 14.08. At the end of the monitored period, a complete filling of the defect site by tissue was achieved in 73.33% patients. A complete integration with adjacent cartilage was seen in 66.67% patients and homogenous structure of newly formed tissue was reported in 80% of patients. DISCUSSION In recent years, cell-free implants (the so-called scaffolds or carriers) have been used ever more frequently in treating localised cartilage defects. Their main effect should consist in helping the cells penetrate the defect site and support new cartilage tissue formation. In order to improve the efficacy of cell-free implants, a new therapeutic technique was developed, combining the microfractures of the base with the use of cell-free scaffold AMIC (Autologous Matrix-Induced Chondrogenesis). Our modification of the original AMIC technique consists in the use of a type I collagen-based scaffold instead of the original collagen membrane constituted by collagen type I and III. Based on the statistical processing of results, the modified AMIC technique has shown a statistically significant improvement compared to the preoperative values of the KOOS questionnaire and all its sub-groups, the Lysholm core and the Tegner activity scale. These good clinical outcomes correlate with the results obtained by other authors using both the original method and the modified AMIC technique. CONCLUSIONS The modified AMIC technique using the cell-free type I collagen-based implant appears to be a safe, accessible and onestage technique to treat localised chondral and osteochondral defects of the knee joint up to the size of 8 cm2. Interleukin-1α (IL-1α) is a dual-function proinflammatory mediator. In addition to its role in the canonical IL-1 signaling pathway, which employs membrane-bound receptors, a growing body of evidence shows that IL-1α has some additional intracellular functions. We identified the interaction of IL-1α with the tumor suppressor p53 in the nuclei and cytoplasm of both malignant and noncancerous mammalian cell lines using immunoprecipitation and the in situ proximity ligation assay (PLA). This interaction was enhanced by treatment with the antineoplastic drug etoposide, which suggests a role for the IL-1α•p53 interaction in genotoxic stress.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy with aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. We present the first retrospective analysis mapping its incidence and therapeutic outcomes in patients diagnosed and treated from 2000 to 2017 in the Czech Republic. The cohort comprised 14 patients (10 males, 4 females) with a median age at diagnosis of 39 years (range, 5-68 years). Initially, skin involvement was noted in 10 (71%) patients and bone marrow infiltration was present in 9 (64%). The first complete remission was achieved in 6/14 (43%) patients after acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma induction therapy and in 3/14 (21%) patients after acute myeloid leukemia regimen. Nine patients underwent allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, with two patients achieving the first complete remission only after allogeneic transplantation. Patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation had longer overall survival than those treated without transplantation (the median survival over the period 16.4 vs. 8.1 months). Relapse of the disease was a significant predictor of mortality (p=0.05). Over the study period, patients' survival ranged from 3.3 to 44.2 months, with a median overall survival of 13 months. Our results revealed an effectivity of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation on complete remission achievement in refractory/relapsed disease. The study aimed to present the actual data from the Czech Republic and thus contribute to a global understanding of BPDCN.

Diabetes mellitus 2 (DM2) is the seventh cause of death worldwide. One of the reasons is late diagnosis of vascular damage. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) has become an independent marker of arterial stiffness and cardiovascular risk. Moreover, the previous studies have shown the importance of beat-to-beat PWV measurement due to its variability among the heart cycle. However, variability of PWV (PWVv) of the whole body hasn't been examined yet. We have studied a group of DM II and heathy volunteers, to investigate the beat-to-beat mean PWV (PWVm) and PWVv in the different body positions. PWV of left lower and upper extremities were measured in DM2 (7 m/8 f, age 68+/-10 years, BP 158/90+/-19/9 mm Hg) and healthy controls (5 m/6 f, age 23+/-2 years, BP 117/76+/-9/5 mm Hg). Volunteers were lying in the resting position and of head-up-tilt in 45° (HUT) for 6 min. PWVv was evaluated as a mean power spectrum in the frequency bands LF and HF (0.04-0.15 Hz, 0.15-0.5 Hz). Resting PWVm of upper extremity was higher in DM2. HUT increased lower extremity PWVm only in DM2. Extremities PWVm ratio was significantly lower in DM2 during HUT compared to controls. LF and HF PWVv had the same response to HUT. Resting PWVv was higher in DM2. Lower extremity PWVv increased during HUT in both groups. PWVm and PWVv in DM2 differed between extremities and were significantly influenced by postural changes due to hydrostatic pressure. Increased resting PWVm and PWVv in DM2 is a marker of increased arterial stiffness.

PURPOSE: Capsular bag distension syndrome is to be seen as a relatively rare complication after cataract surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe our experience of late-onset capsular bag distension syndrome with one case onset 4 years after cataract surgery. Nowadays diagnostic imaging methods were used. The literature was reviewed to summarize the diagnosis, classification, use of diagnostic aids, and the current treatments for the capsular bag distension syndrome. Visual acuity was assessed using the ETDRS (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study) chart. DISCUSSION: A 72-year-old woman presented with decreased visual acuity and blurred vision 4 years after phacoemulsification with continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) and in-the-bag IOL implantation. After the slit lamp examination, patient was investigated with Scheimpflug camera (OCULUS Pentacam HR) and anterior segment spectral domain OCT (Optovue, Avanti RTVue XR), which confirmed the diagnosis of capsular block syndrome. Aspiration of the turbid fluid behind the lens and capsular bag lavage resulted in resolution of her symptoms. Aspirated fluid was examined. We have observed no CBS recurrence. CONCLUSION: CBS is the relatively rare complication of the standard cataract surgery, which can occur during surgery and in a postoperative period. CBS can be solved successfully after regular diagnosis using modern imaging methods.

Among strategies suggested to decrease agricultural soil N2O losses, the use of nitrification inhibitors such as DMPP (3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate) has been proposed. However, the efficiency of DMPP might be affected by soil amendments, such as biochar, which has been shown to reduce N2O emissions. This study evaluated the synergic effect of a woody biochar applied with DMPP on soil N2O emissions. A incubation study was conducted with a silt loam soil and a biochar obtained from Pinus taeda at 500 °C. Two biochar rates (0 and 2% (w/w)) and three different nitrogen treatments (unfertilized, fertilized and fertilized + DMPP) were assayed under two contrasting soil water content levels (40% and 80% of water filled pore space (WFPS)) over a 163 day incubation period. Results showed that DMPP reduced N2O emissions by reducing ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) populations and promoting the last step of denitrification (measured by the ratio nosZI + nosZII/nirS + nirK genes). Biochar mitigated N2O emissions only at 40% WFPS due to a reduction in AOB population. However, when DMPP was applied to the biochar amended soil, a counteracting effect was observed, since the N2O mitigation induced by DMPP was lower than in control soil, demonstrating that this biochar diminishes the efficiency of the DMPP both at low and high soil water contents.

Nutritional status, its assessment and its influence on numerous diseases is currently still being discussed. The aim of this study was to determine the current state of nutrition by various research methods in school children. Also, to verify the accuracy of body mass index (BMI) determination in school environment and to compare the nutritional status in two different types of school. We used a quantitative questionnaire method in 64 children from schools in the South Moravian Region. We have verified the weight and height measurement in the same group by sophisticated instruments. We have determined the basic parameters of the cardiovascular system (non-invasive continuously blood pressure recording; mutual spectral analysis for estimation of baroreflex sensitivity; applanation tonometry and cardiac polygraphy for arterial stiffness evaluation). The indicative questionnaire method encountered a problem with the weight of almost 40 % of the population approached - both obesity (14.3 %) and malnutrition (25.2 %). Cardiovascular parameters were in physiological range for the given age categories. We found increased values in BMI, % of body fat and heart rate in children from countryside type of school, respectively. We concluded that obesity/malnutrition are both common phenomena in the children population in the Czech Republic.

PURPOSE: To report late postoperative opacification of a hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) AcryNovaTMPC 610Y as well as the clinical consequences in patients 10 years after uncomplicated cataract surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were reviewed of 23 patients (26 eyes) with AcryNovaTMPC 610Y implantated between years 2005 and 2007. Next clinical examination was performed 10 years after surgery. We assessed best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000E) and relative opacity of IOL material, (OCULUS Pentacam HR). Results of BCDVA and Pentacam were analysed statistically. One explanted IOL was analysed using anterior segment OCT in vitro and spectroscopic method EDX (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). RESULTS: Opacification led to a statistically significant reduction in the best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) = (0,95 ± 0,10) versus (0,87 ± 0,20) and to increase of IOL opacity only in some lenses but statistically significant in the average (6,37 ± 2,16)% versus value of (14,22 ± 5,87)%. In the explanted IOL we have documented structural changes of primarily hydrophobic raw material leading to property of hydrophilic one. CONCLUSION: Some batches of AcryNovaTMPC 610Y were produced from raw material of poor quality which is the cause of its structural changes and its progressive opacification.

Intensive tillage, low-residue crops, and a warm, humid climate have contributed to soil organic carbon (SOC) loss in the southeastern Coastal Plains region. Conservation (CnT) tillage and winter cover cropping are current management practices to rebuild SOC; however, there is sparse long-term field data showing how these management practices perform under variable climate conditions. The objectives of this study were to use CQESTR, a process-based C model, to simulate SOC in the top 15 cm of a loamy sand soil (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kandiudult) under conventional (CvT) or CnT tillage to elucidate the impact of projected climate change and crop yields on SOC relative to management and recommend the best agriculture management to increase SOC. Conservation tillage was predicted to increase SOC by 0.10 to 0.64 Mg C ha for six of eight crop rotations compared with CvT by 2033. The addition of a winter crop [rye ( L.) or winter wheat ( L.)] to a corn ( L.)-cotton ( L.) or corn-soybean [ (L.) Merr.] rotation increased SOC by 1.47 to 2.55 Mg C ha. A continued increase in crop yields following historical trends could increase SOC by 0.28 Mg C ha, whereas climate change is unlikely to have a significant impact on SOC except in the corn-cotton or corn-soybean rotations where SOC decreased up to 0.15 Mg C ha by 2033. The adoption of CnT and cover crop management with high-residue-producing corn will likely increase SOC accretion in loamy sand soils. Simulation results indicate that soil C saturation may be reached in high-residue rotations, and increasing SOC deeper in the soil profile will be required for long-term SOC accretion beyond 2030.

RESUMO

The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the 7Li(p,n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

The photoisomerization of the all-trans protonated Schiff base of retinal (SBR+) in solution is highly inefficient. The present theoretical and experimental investigation aims at disclosing the mechanisms of ultrafast, non-reactive relaxation of SBR+ that lead to the drastic decrease in the isomerization yield in non-polar solvents. Our pump-probe measurements demonstrate the sensitivity of the all-trans SBR+ excited-state dynamics on the electrostatic interaction with the surrounding counterions and the crucial importance of the chromophore microenvironment. Our computational study focuses for the first time on the retinal chromophore-counterion pairs that are formed in non-polar solvents. By employing TDDFT-based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations and ADC(2) reaction paths calculations we found that internal conversion from the initially excited state to an inter-molecular charge transfer state with excitation localized on the counterion, leads to dissociation of the chromophore-counterion pair and to the abortion of isomerization. Barriers to conical intersection with the inter-molecular charge transfer state were found in the range 0.42-0.67 eV at the ADC(2) level. The existence of a barrier along the non-reactive relaxation pathways explains the observation that in solution the excitation on the blue edge of the SBR+ absorption leads to decrease in the isomerization yield with respect to the excitation at the red edge.
