RESUMO

In this paper, a broad combined orange-red emission from Eu²âº- and Eu³âº-doped low-silica calcium aluminosilicate (LSCAS) glass is reported. Spectroscopic results demonstrate that it is possible to tune the emission wavelength by changing the excitation wavelength in the UV-Vis region. The color coordinates for the emission spectra were calculated, and using the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage 1931 and 1976 chromatic diagrams, it is possible to note that they are dependent on the excitation wavelength. In addition, the (u', v') color coordinates for the investigated LSCAS samples are close to the Planckian spectrum in the cold region between 2000 and 2600K. Our results show that the Eu:LSCAS system can be used in a white light phosphor when mixed in aggregate with phosphors using green-yellow luminescent ions.

RESUMO

Fluorene-based systems have shown great potential as components in organic electronics and optoelectronics (organic photovoltaics, OPVs, organic light emitting diodes, OLEDs, and organic transistors, OTFTs). These systems have drawn attention primarily because they exhibit strong blue emission associated with relatively good thermal stability. It is well-known that the electronic properties of polymers are directly related to the molecular conformations and chain packing of polymers. Here, we used three oligofluorenes (trimer, pentamer, and heptamer) as model systems to theoretically investigate the conformational properties of fluorene molecules, starting with the identification of preferred conformations. The hybrid exchange-correlation functional, OPBE, and ZINDO/S-CI showed that each oligomer exhibits a tendency to adopt a specific chain arrangement, which could be distinguished by comparing their UV/vis electronic absorption and (13)C NMR spectra. This feature was used to identify the preferred conformation of the oligomer chains in chloroform-cast films by comparing experimental and theoretical UV/vis and (13)C NMR spectra. Moreover, the oligomer chain packing and dynamics in the films were studied by DSC and several solid-state NMR techniques, which indicated that the phase behavior of the films may be influenced by the tendency that each oligomeric chain has to adopt a given conformation.

RESUMO

In this paper we report the synthesis of two new complexes, [Eu(fod)(3)(phen)] and [Tb(fod)(3)(phen)] (fod = 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octadionate and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), and their complete characterization, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and TGA. The complexes were studied in detail via both theoretical and experimental approaches to the photophysical properties. The [Eu(fod)(3)(phen)] complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. The crystal structure of [Eu(fod)(3)(phen)] exhibits an offset pi-pi stacking interaction between the phenanthroline ligands of adjacent lanthanide complexes. The Eu(3+) cation is coordinated to three fod anionic ligands and to one phen. The symmetry around Eu(3+) is best described as a highly distorted square antiprism. The molar absorption coefficients of [Eu(fod)(3)(phen)] and [Tb(fod)(3)(phen)] revealed an improved ability to absorb light in comparison with the stand-alone phen and fod molecules. [Tb(fod)(3)(phen)] emits weak UV excitation, with this feature being explained by the triplet-(5)D(4) resonance, which contributes significantly to the nonradiative deactivation of Tb(3+), causing a short lifetime and low quantum yield. The intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4), and Omega(6)) of [Eu(fod)(3)(phen)] were calculated for the X-ray and Sparkle/AM1 structures and compared with values obtained for [Eu(fod)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] and [Eu(fod)(3)(phen-N-O)] (phen-N-O = 1,10-phenanthroline N-oxide) samples. Intensity parameters were used to predict the radiative decay rate. The theoretical quantum efficiencies from the X-ray and Sparkle/AM1 structures are in good agreement with the experimental values, clearly attesting to the efficacy of the theoretical models.

RESUMO

We present an investigation of the excited-state absorption and laser emission of a 1.0-at. %-Nd3+-doped YVO4 single-crystal fiber grown by the low-cost and versatile laser-heated pedestal growth technique. Efficient laser emission at 1064 nm was achieved when the fiber was pumped, in an end-pump cavity, by a Ti:sapphire laser at 808 nm. A continuous-wave threshold of 10 mW was observed with an efficiency of 42% with respect to the absorbed pump power and the maximum output power of 200 mW. These results are excellent when compared with those of a commercial bulk crystal adapted to the same cavity (48% efficiency, 250-mW maximum output power). Thus the fibers are characterized as strong candidates for the construction of compact lasers that can also be pumped by low-cost diode lasers.
